Two months ago. It was the day of Gail’s party.
Lunch time, seven hours before that night, Dave finally decided to get rid of something. A medium-sized box on his huge bookshelf.
“Go to a very far place where no one can see you, and please burn this.” Dave handed the box to Yenny. “I’ve been keeping that for 3 years now, and I think it’s best to finally get rid of that box through someone I trust the most. And it’s you.”
Yenny nodded in response, but with a puzzled expression because she was sure it was Jeremy Dave trusted the most and not her. Also, it was the first time in four years that he had allowed someone to touch his personal things because after his mom passed away, he became extremely agitated about it.
“Make sure you won’t tell anyone about it.” Dave gave her an anxious look.
She couldn’t help but feel uneasy. Why would he want her to burn the box in a very far place? And why shouldn’t she tell anyone about it? However, she couldn’t ask him these questions. Dave’s condition had been getting worse, and one mistake would make him throw a fit.
“Should I do it now?” she asked a different question instead.
Dave nodded. “You better leave now. Aren’t you gonna attend Gail’s party tonight?”
Right, Yenny forgot about it. She had to be there at the party not for Gail but for Jeremy as he had requested her to come so he could finally make her and Serin meet.
“Then, I’ll get going now.” She hurried outside without looking back.
Dave, left in the room and still sitting on the edge of his bed, stared at the balcony across from him but the sight of it began to agitate him. He stood up and faced the bookshelf standing in the corner. But he felt more anxious, seeing the empty spot in that bookshelf where the box had been. His whole body trembled in an instant.
“No!! Stop thinking shit, Dave! I trust Yenny! She will burn everything!! She will!! She will not open the box! She will burn it!!” Couldn’t control his unstable state anymore, he punched his head repeatedly while going back and forth in his room. “You’re stupid, Dave!! You are so stupid!!”
He banged his head on the wall and regretted why he had written all his evil secrets in his journal for the past four years. But what could he do? He couldn’t dare tell anyone the horrendous crime he had committed back then. Unsettled and quivering a lot, he rushed to his bed and sat at the edge on it again. Tears rolled down his face, for all the demons in his head began to torment him.
Meanwhile, Yenny’s uneasiness pushed her to disobey Dave. Instead of heading to a very far place, she went to her apartment in Lewis City and opened the box. She took the journal. To her crippling shock, it had a detailed and cruel confession to a horrendous crime.
“I killed you not because I wanted to but I had to. If you only listened to me, I would not drag you to the balcony. Damn!!! You kept messing with me even though I was strangling you. Instead of leaving me alone, you sent me over the edge! You crossed the line!! How could you ask me to stop taking it???? Who are you??? You're just my mom!!! Fuck this life!!! I don't--”
She furiously threw the journal, for she could no longer continue reading it. Her hands couldn’t stop shaking. The torment wouldn’t stop shattering her heart. She was so devastated, bursting into sorrowful tears. Leona Sean, the woman who had shown her great kindness, was brutally killed by her own son. She cried harder. Though she wanted to burn everything in the box, she couldn’t because she shouldn’t destroy such important evidence.
Gathering a little strength, she stood up and got her phone. Then she pressed her speed dial.
“Why?” Jeremy answered her call right away, for he would always immediately take calls from anyone at their home in Horizon Town after losing his precious mom. “Hello?? Why aren’t you answering??”
But Yenny was still in silence, suppressing even her cries. She couldn’t tell Jeremy the truth, afraid it would put him in danger. If Dave had committed a devilish thing to his mom without anyone knowing it, he could also possibly do it to his brother.
She wiped her tears and cleared her throat. “Where are you now?”
“Still in Hopkins. Why?” Though Jeremy finally heard Yenny speak, he still had a bad feeling about her silence a while ago. He could tell that something was wrong. “Did Dave hurt you?” he asked without hesitation.
Hearing Jeremy ask if Dave had hurt her had Yenny crying devastatingly again. She covered her mouth and took seconds to reply. “No.”
“Then why are you calling me now?”
A moment of silence again, longer this time.
“I just want to tell you that I can’t come to Gail’s party tonight.”
Jeremy was sure now that something was wrong. “Why? What happened??”
“I’m sorry. Promise I will make up for it.”
“Don’t dodge my questions.” He already sounded frustrated. “Why will you not come? Didn’t Dave tell you that he’s okay with it? You will just be gone for a few hours, so what’s--”
“I’m going home tonight.”
He paused. He knew very well that Yenny dislikes going home on her rest days because she worries for Dave a lot. And because of that, Jeremy would always force her to take her days off whether she liked it or not. And just now, she had told him she would go home not even the next day but tonight? Something really didn’t feel right.
“About Serin, I promise I will make time to meet her personally.” Yenny ended the phone call.
Jeremy almost flew to the basement parking lot and drove out of Tiffany Blue with growing uneasiness. The fact that Yenny had called him out of the blue when she could have waited for him to be home to tell him she wouldn’t attend Gail’s party was unsettling.
Meanwhile at Sean’s mansion in Horizon Town, Dave couldn’t take his eyes off his watch because the night had already fallen but Yenny wasn’t returning yet. Agitated, he left his room and headed straight to the kitchen to make some juice. It’s for his dad. He should make him fall asleep earlier than his usual bedtime to avoid any problems in case Yenny arrived and didn’t do what he had asked her to do.
“Dad, drink this.” Dave handed his dad a tall glass of juice. “That’s organic, it will help you relax.”
“Thanks, my son.” Tony Sean smiled warmly at him then drank the juice with such a good mood, completely clueless about what’s going on with his son. “This one tastes lighter. I like it.”
“What a relief you like it.” Dave faked a nice smile. “Continue reading your book, dad. I will make one for Ms. Fei, too.”
The old man nodded, then Dave left the room, rushing back to the kitchen. When he finished making the juice, he poured some powder in it, like what’s in his dad’s, then went to Ms. Fei’s room. The old woman drank the juice with gladness, for it’s very rare for Dave to be doing such a thing. Now the only problem was Jeremy, his younger brother. What if he arrived home first before Yenny did? He hurried back to his room and waited anxiously.
Half an hour flew by, and Yenny returned home, without making any noise. Despite hesitation, she still ended up going back to the mansion to do what was right. She had made up her mind, and that was to reveal the truth to Jeremy. But he wasn’t home yet, so she rushed to her room.
While waiting for Jeremy, she started gathering her important stuff and put it in her bag. When she’s done, she decided to leave already, for she couldn’t be staying at the mansion anymore. She would just go to Gail’s house and wait for Jeremy there.
Quietly and very cautiously, she went downstairs, but just when she reached the last step of the stairs, Dave suddenly went out of his room to get something to drink. As he took the winding stairs, he suddenly heard the huge door by the living room close. He almost flew outside. And there, he saw Yenny walking to the gate with haste.
He raced behind her. A dangerous smirk glinted on his face. “You must be in a hurry.”
Yenny was so startled she almost screamed. But good thing she was able to control her shock and fear, for she should not make it obvious that Dave was now a monster in her eyes. She turned around, dread creeping on her.
“Gail’s party has just started.. that’s why I have to hurry.” She hoped she didn’t sound nervous nor trembling.
Dave threw her a creepy smile, then looked at the bag in her hand. “Who brings a big bag to a birthday party?”
Yenny cleared her throat, refusing to show any hint of fear. She even smiled fakely. “I will go home after the party. Chris will drive me to Lewis City. I already told Jeremy about it.”
Dave stared at her. Yenny couldn’t help but compare how Dave was before and after she found out the truth. Before, whenever he was throwing a fit, he would never cause her fear, even the slightest. But now, only his presence was already spine-chilling.
“Isn’t it unusual that you have packed a lot of things for a two-day off? Don’t you usually carry a small bag whenever you go home?” Dave was becoming more and more terrifying in her eyes.
“Well.. These are the things I don’t use anymore, so I--”
“Liar.” Suddenly, he grabbed her wrist and dragged her to the far end of the mansion, like a mad beast.
In the storage room, Dave let go of Yenny from his brutal hand and faced her with a furious expression.
But despite the fear surging in her like a disastrous storm, Yenny looked at him with courage. “Why are you doing this to me? Did I do something wrong?”
Dave laughed devilishly. “I didn’t know that you’re such a good actress.”
The darkness in the storage room couldn’t conceal the fury in his monstrous eyes. And because he could no longer unhear all the demons in his head, he pressed Yenny on the wall forcefully. Couldn’t hide her dread anymore, she quivered already. Dave was merciless, vicious and so frightening she felt helpless that she would also die in his own hands like how Leona Sean faced her tragic death.
While Yenny struggled to breathe, tears overflowed in her eyes. She was in so much pain. Her heart was being ripped to pieces. This was what Leona Sean had experienced before. It was knocking, it’s unavoidable. Yenny was facing a cruel death.
She closed her tearful eyes, for she hated to die seeing a monster. What she wanted to see at the last moment in her life was not a tormenting picture but a beautiful memory, so she recalled how she had met Leona and her good family. She was only 4 years old when her dying mom took her to Hope Orphanage. She then became Tony and Leona Sean’s sponsored child. While growing up, she had never felt she’s an orphan because the Sean family showered her with genuine love and care.
With such a precious memory, she could see Tony, Leona and Jeremy smiling at her, casting beaming rays of hope to her. And that was when she realized she should fight for her life and not just accept a merciless death. For Tony, Leona and Jeremy.
“D—Don’t.. k–kill me.. p–please..”
Dave stopped strangling her.
She opened her eyes, heavy tears wouldn’t stop rushing while she was gasping for air. She had just escaped death, but suddenly, her vision got blurry until everything faded into complete darkness. She fell to the ground.
Panicking horribly, Dave hurried outside. He was sure Jeremy would arrive soon, so he had to be in his room. Only a minute later, as he stood behind the curtains, Jeremy’s car came rushing to his sight.
Dave was right, that Jeremy wouldn’t go straight to Gail’s party because no one in their house had answered his calls. He knew him very well, and because of that, he could always deceive him so conveniently. “It’s time to act again.” Dave smirked as he walked to his bed. He would pretend he’s already sleeping.Downstairs, the deafening silence began to haunt Jeremy. It was unusually quiet. He rocketed to the third floor and reached his dad’s room. His dad was already deep in his sleep. Though he wanted to feel good about his dad sleeping soundly, he couldn’t, for it’s very suspicious. Next, he went to Ms. Fei’s room. Like his dad, the old lady was already sleeping. He felt more uneasy because after he moved to another city for college, the old woman wouldn’t go to bed yet unless she would see him park his car outside whenever he would go home. Sighing, he fixed her blanket and left quietly. Outside Yenny’s room, he knocked on the door a few times until decided to open it. As expecte
Yenny did see hope, running into Serin, but the important evidence to lock Dave in prison was not with her, for she had completely forgotten her bag in the storage room. As she failed to escape, she hurried back to the mansion and left Serin outside. Two hours later. “How are you?” It was Chris asking Serin as soon as he and Ken came inside her room. Serin faked a soft smile. “I’m okay now.” But the two guys could see a troubled expression glimpsing on her face, for she was unable to help the girl in Horizon Town. “You don’t look okay though,” Ken said. That’s when Serin plucked her courage to tell them the truth. Chris hurriedly took out his phone, showed her a group photo on it and pointed at Yenny who was all smiles standing beside Jeremy. “Is this the girl you’re talking about?” Chris asked Serin nervously. A week before Gail’s party, Chris showed Serin the same photo while he was excitedly talking about Yenny. Their close friend Serin was supposed to meet at Gail’s party.
But the two guys’ appearance out of the blue at this early hour no longer surprised Yenny, for she knew them very well. Last night, she had a strong feeling that they would do something just to confirm she’s really okay. Now that she was already cornered, she had no other choice but to reveal the horrible truth to them. But just the thought of doing it already crushed her heart. Teary-eyed, she walked to her front door and typed in the passcode on the small device attached to it. The door opened, and as they came inside her apartment, she burst into tears, revealing the truth to them. Shocked, horrified, furious and devastated, Chris and Ken could not utter a single word. They were in torment so cruel it was killing them at the moment. Leona Sean was brutally killed by her own son, but that wasn’t all. For almost 2 years before such a horrible night, Leona had to endure the emotional pain Dave had been causing her just to help him get out of his misery. But her motherly love only tur
“Today?” The apartment landlady was flustered to hear Yenny’s hasty decision. “No wonder I saw you guys busy moving out your stuff a while ago. But why are you leaving out of the blue? Did something bad happen to you here?”Yenny shook her head. “I really had a good time staying here.” “Then why.. Oh sorry, I shouldn’t be nosy like this.” The landlady smiled at her awkwardly then continued signing the lease termination agreement. After everything was settled, Yenny left the small office and hurried to the basement parking lot. 30 minutes later, they reached Mauve, a high-rise condominium in the district next to Hopkins. Bren, Ken’s cousin, owned one of the units here and let Yenny stay there as soon as he had heard from Ken that they needed a place for their friend for the time being. Though Bren was wondering why, he had just offered such great help without hesitation. Meanwhile at Sean’s residence, Jeremy had locked himself in his room since he arrived home to avoid not only Dave b
Chris and Ken refused to show a hint of uneasiness in their expressions.“That’s nice!” Chris faked a congratulatory smile for Gail. But Ken never. Instead, he displayed an annoyed face he would always show her. “Why did you suddenly move out of Tiffany Blue when you couldn’t even live without pestering Jeremy?” Gail cursed at him through her eyes. “You know what? I hope someday you will meet someone who could chop your brutal mouth.”“It’s not brutality, it’s honesty,” Ken responded with bluntness. “What’s new about you hating me anyway?” Gail did sound disappointed. But Ken displayed no guilt, for he could no longer take the girl’s frustrating attitude. “You get out first,” Chris told her as soon as the doors opened. She stepped outside the elevator and waited for them but they were not moving at all. “Why the heck are you still standing there?”“We forgot something,” Chris replied, then hastily pressed the button to close the doors but Gail was quick enough to stop them from c
Though Ken wanted to rescue Chris, he should not. It would make Jeremy more suspicious. Good thing Chris finally regained his composure. He intently made eye contact with Jeremy to avoid looking like he’s hiding something from him. “Not the trauma you might be thinking right now but the trauma Yenny has to deal with after leaving your family without a proper goodbye. As long as it’s a distressing experience, it’s called trauma, right?”“Right,” Ken backed him up, for it’s already safe to do it. “Any experience that causes us emotional pain is trauma.” There was a moment of silence. “Sorry.” Chris patted Jeremy on his back. “I shouldn’t have talked about trauma when Dave suffers from it terribly.”“It’s okay.” Jeremy looked outside the cafe through the glass wall. “So what’s your decision now?” It’s Ken.Jeremy tore his eyes off the busy campus outside and looked at Ken who was sitting across from him. “I won’t ask the agency for a new nurse anymore. Dave’s condition is at its wors
Chris began to feel more uneasy but he kept a nervous-free face. “How would I know who lives there?” “Stop fooling me.” Gail stared at him with such prying eyes. “You guys were supposed to be on this floor the last time I saw you and Ken here. I even waited for you to return because I thought you would only be gone for a few minutes as you said you forgot something. But you no longer returned when you looked so prepared to come here with all those grocery bags.” “So?” he replied, unbothered. “So what I’m trying to say is that you and Ken for sure are hiding someone in that unit.” “Oh?” He plastered an amused expression. “I didn’t know you’re such a good story writer.”Gail laughed at him like an annoying villain. “Look who’s dodging bullets here. Let me remind you that there are only two units on this floor. One is mine and the other is that unit right in front of us now where you’re supposed to visit last time.” “Fine.” Chris already felt the need to do something to stop Gail fro
“I’m so thankful we met again!” Yenny felt so happy and relieved she already forgot Serin had just experienced danger. “How have you been?”“Let’s sit first.” Serin took her to the nearest bench, as they sat, she reassured Yenny with a gentle smile. “I’ve been doing good.”It had already been more than a month since Serin left Jeremy’s place, and all she had ever done was survive on her own. At first, it was terribly hard, for she had to brave a week of roofless nights. But as she had saved up from working almost 24/7, she finally got a tiny rooftop space in one of the cheapest apartments in the area. To continuously survive, she had kept herself busy, working multiple jobs. Cleaning houses, nursing toddlers, serving at cafes, and diners, watching over neighborhood shops, running errands for her neighbors and more. However, despite having a lot of part-time jobs, she still wanted to get a stable job that would pay her decently so she could save enough to register her identity legally
“Serin spoke in her sleep twice and during those moments, I vanished in the palace and appeared here in this present time. She must be wandering in her dreams, that’s what I am thinking right now.”Whirling emotions, Jeremy was having the same thoughts. Events that involved Serin’s dreams suddenly reappeared in his clear memory. On the night of his 18th birthday, he found Serin on Desf Road. He heard her call him Heron and when he was about to carry him, she longingly touched his face and painfully uttered, “Heron, you’re alive. I’m glad you’re alive.” Those were the same exact words that came out from her in her sleep before Sodon vanished in the past and was brought here in this present time.Jeremy could also remember the day he and Serin had a heated confrontation just because she went out of his condo unit without telling him. When they clashed for the first time, while her
When Jeremy began to notice that Dave had been treating him completely different from how he used to, he already knew why. Slowly getting closer to Serin, Dave had been falling for Serin. Criminal, that torturing word. The moment Dave uttered that word, his heart agonizingly broke. His confession, in an instant, took him to that gruesome and haunting night when he was nothing but a horrible monster.Year 2009, the night of his younger brother’s 14th birthday when he thought that his mom was busy in the kitchen preparing for the surprise birthday dinner for Jeremy. While he was in his room, suddenly the door opened.Dave’s body froze when he got caught using illegal drugs. With his mom’s widened eyes, both of them got completely shocked. His extreme nervousness made him throw the drugs in a rush, hands were quivering.Total gloom darkened Leona Sean’s face. Her steps towards her son got heavier. Her beautiful world fell apart.“W..Will you.. turn me in.. to the p..police.. this time?” Dave fearfully asked with his trembling voice and bloody red eyes.Leona
That phone call, in an instant, darkened his bright day. He was sure who was on the other line. That voice, he knew it.That was him, the old man whom he ran into Campbell Park across Tiffany Blue the night when odd occurrences terribly knocked him with shocking terror and absurd affliction. That was nine years ago but Jeremy could still remember him as clear as day. But that was not the first and last time their paths crossed.Five years ago, that old man suddenly showed up on Desf Road and gave him the black silk thread bracelet. And even until now, how that old man quickly disppeared before his sight on that endless and empty road still bothered him. When that old man called him Heron from the other line, for the first time in so many years, that name began to haunt him again. Like flashes of lightning that suddenly disturbed the tranquil dark sky, strikes of overwhelming fear started to frighten him.Jeremy sped up.
Serin suddenly woke up. That scenario in her dream was filled with strange familiarity. That mountain. That sword. That guy. Those men on horses. That old man.She could not help but feel like she had already seen them before, not in her dreams but in real life.In haste, she left the bed and walked straight to the closet. As soon as she opened it, she got her black dress.Looking at the embroidered name on the back collar, she felt sudden pain. She did have a name but her identity had remained mysterious. Her memory was still completely empty.Eyes locked on her black
'I'm glad that you're finally here.. right next to me.' It was like a sweet tune to her heart. Serin flashed a warm smile. The pouring rain became a beautiful shower in her teary eyes.No more hesitation, Jeremy fearlessly faced her. The girl, who was standing before him, had given him unfeigned strength during his silent battles. He had yearned for her which felt like forever. Every day and every night, he had waited for this moment. If it's just a dream, he did not want to wake up. But Jeremy was not dreaming, it's real. He was looking into Serin's beautiful eyes."Welcome back. It's nice to see you again." He was floating in a surge of profound happiness. Words alone could not describe what he was feeling at the moment.Serin exchanged tearful smiles with him. Her heart was also exclaiming in unexplainable delight. All those shared moments with him flashed back. From the first time their longing eyes met to the saddest day they p

Five years ago."I will send you the exact address, sir." A male voice said on the other line."You have done such a great job. I will call you if I need something. Thank you." Dave ended the phone call. Nervousness began to tremble him while hurrying downstairs.Carl, the private detective that he had hired, managed to find Yenny in just four weeks. As soon as he walked past the living room, someone, who was comfortably sitting on the luxuriously-looking sofa, caught his eyes. He stopped walking. 'What is she doing here?'"Hi, Dave!" Gail greeted him. She rose up from sitting and walked to where he was standing. She was displaying her beautiful smile. "Where are you going? You must be in a rush.""What brings you here?" He asked coldly."You still have the courage to show up this house after you caused a scene here a month ago?" Jeremy showed up. He was talking about the nig
Gail simpered. "You think you can fool me??" Gail thought that Dave was just fooling around to tease her since he already knew that she had feelings for Jeremy."What if she really likes my brother, will you do something?""I won't do anything because that's not true and that will never happen." There was certainty in her voice. "Since when did you become fond of playing jokes on someone? She let out a heavy sigh. "Driving for almost three hours now must bore you. If boredom is killing you, play some music. Stop spitting non-sense.""What will I get if I play a joke on you?" He sounded so serious while his eyes were focused on driving.Gail looked at him. How his face plastered seriousness could tell that he was no longer teasing her. That's what Gail felt but the truth was, Dave was only acting. He had to fake seriousness in his voice and expression to persuade her that he was telling the truth.
