Ethan sat in the board room and stared absentmindedly out of the window while the others argued about which projects were currently a priority.

“We should focus more resources on this project because it’s expected to make us a ton of money next year,” one of his vice presidents argued passionately while pointing at the screen where several charts and graphs were displayed. “If we put a lot more effort into developing this technology now, we’ll be able to sell it later for an insane amount of profits.”

“I agree,” another VP chimed in. “It makes perfect business sense to invest our money and time into developing something that’s going to pay off big in the future. That’s exactly what investors want us to do anyway.”

“But we have to look at the bigger picture here too,” a third VP countered. “Sure, investing in something like this may bring in huge profits later but it won’t necessarily make our shareholders happy right now because most of them prefer short-term returns over long-term
