-RAINA’S POV-

"Did you get any more information?" I examined my sleep-deprived friend, noting the heavy bags under her eyes as I shut the car door of my royal blue Bentley and walked over to her white McLaren.

We just got out of our cars and immediately convened in the parking lot of our high school. Students loitered on the compound.

“Mom won’t say anything and Dad’s not here.” The corners of Venus’ mouth half-mooned downwards. Her harlequin eyes seemed slightly bloodshot from the lack of sleep.

“Where did he go?” I exhorted, tugging at my cute aesthetic yellow backpack over my left shoulder.

“Wolkrane Fortress.” Her tone was light but the color was worn-out from her complexion. She pressed the key fob and locked up the car, setting the alarm.

“And Valen, did he come back?” My heart skipped a beat as I waited for the acknowledgment. Please say yes, I supplicated inwardly.

Truly, I preferred him being here. It turned out that he left me last night to depart for Alpha Camp. Even

    - RAINA’S POV- My bitch switch flipped on and I wanted to give it to her. I abruptly ceased walking and twirled to face her. “Don’t you dare accuse me of such a thing!” Thinking that my incensed voice had elevated unflatteringly loud, I quickly glanced around at the intrigued groupies that observed our bicker and blocked them out. “I can’t stop a guy from having feelings for me.” “You knew damn well that this would happen. Vaheed has literally fanned off every guy that showed interest in you. How many guys has he strangled to stay the hell away from you?” Venus’ angry aura plunged out like a slapping wave. “Didn’t you think he would want to kill your mate too?” “Guys,” Azara tried to referee, switching her place at the end and pushing to center between us. Ignoring her, I snapped, “What did you want me to do? Cut Vaheed off and end our friendship?” “Yes!” Venus assertively declared with a strong nod of the head. Taken aback, my mouth fell open. It was utterly unfair of her to d

-RAINA'S POV- As our math teacher completed writing an equation on the whiteboard for us to attempt solving, he turned and glanced at me, then at Venus. He blew out a hard breath as he placed the erasable black marker on the desk and then gave me a second plea with his green eyes, thinning his lips. I was his only option to deal with the distraught Alpha Female. Silence. When was our class ever this ghastly quiet? Venus’ devastating mood created a depressive beating cloud within the classroom that made it hard for everyone to concentrate underneath the hot atmosphere. Robbing the sun's radiant job of its rays that provided the natural lighting through the glass window panes, to feel less brilliant in its splendor. The tension in the room was unnerving for all and morbid fear reeked. She sat at the left end, by the window, with her head lying on the desk, totally in another world. When she wasn't whimpering, it was a melancholy groan that made the others cringe. I was seated on her

-RAINA’S POV- Extremely aggrieved, a list of names sprang into my head from the anger that riled in me. Sadly, he was not here to get the lashing of my whipping tongue. What the hell! He was being a dick! Blind-sighted, I gazed down the corridor cussing. Hanging up on me for some other chick was unbecoming. How do I make him pay for that? The communication was futile. I got nowhere. What's the point in telling Venus about it? Geez, I called Valen but he wouldn't talk about Vaheed. Only his jealousy perforated the conversation and then some bitch was trying to steal him away from me. Should I tell her that? I breathed out heavily with lavaging animosity. It was stupid of me to want to hear his deep sexy voice. It was so foolish to think that he'd give me special attention, since we are mates and all. I have only been daydreaming about him since I was thirteen years old. No big deal. My thoughts and emotions were searing, both racing and overcoming my mind with images of his ster

    - -RAINA’S POV- From the mezzanine, Azara beckoned, "Your uncle's coming for Venus." After looking up at her, my eyes switched to the parking lot, and I did not see Uncle Duke's car driving up. As Beta, he ran the pack in the absence of Alpha King Vance. Faster than a bullet, I dashed up the stairs to help Azara with Venus. When I saw her at the same desk by the classroom window, she had gone limp and semi-conscious. Azara cocked her brows high, and lowly stated, “You look like shit.” Dismissing her, I fanned my hand and focused on Venus. I was well cognizant of how messy I must look in comparison to my orderly image, but I did not get the time to fix my appearance with everything happening this swiftly. Our classmates whispered and buzzed with murmurs. Werewolves do not get sick unless poisoned with components of silver and wolfsbane. High-ranked wolves had better tolerant levels than those lower. Therefore, it unnerved everyone to witness this happening to the Alpha Princess.

-RAINA'S POV- Furiously speeding through the not-so-busy town at 100 mph, I tailed the female biker, passing several skyscraper buildings through the town. The prey used the idling traffic on the stretch to her advantage, zipping in between vehicles. As challenging as she was trying to make it when she disappeared in front of a slow-moving green garbage truck, my determination soared with a satisfied look at the gas tank being half-full. You are not getting away, I thought to myself as I slowed down to 70 mph. You messed with the wrong she-wolf. Turning the steering wheel to the right, I changed lanes, then to the left and back again to overtake the garbage truck and picked up speed. Jamming my horn with the heel of my palm, I tooted for the two sluggish vehicles in front to clear the way for my crazy fast driving. Of course, they pulled over and told me derogatorily about the body parts that I had. "Up yours," I whispered, though they could not hear me because my window was up and

-VALEN’S POV- My mind’s been stuck on Raina all day today, so I went for a run despite the wax-melting sun. Through the bond, I knew that she wasn’t alright. Yet, I cannot bring myself to go near her. It was not neglect when there was good reason to stay away. Without a doubt, she’d be mad. I expected to get a full dose of her flogging tongue when I saw her next time. I’ll deal with that when the time comes. The sanity I had was dwindling because of this shitty situation. It was radically breaking me down. After the ritual, I did not mean to leave her without a word. I was going to apologize when she called me on the phone this morning but the mention of Vaheed’s name rifled my anger. It was bad enough that he was creating problems. I was going to put him on a fucking leash. Today was one of those days when I refused to think of my harebrained brother. Fuck! What the hell had he been thinking about? Careless and asinine. - - -RAINA’S POV- “You don’t get to die today.” At some point before the collision with the truck, a hand smashed the window, grabbed the collar of my green blouse, and vehemently yanked me from the car. I flipped in the air in an icy paralysis. The piercing sound of the calamitous explosion rendered my ears deaf with a sharp ringing. Glass shards like bullets sprinkling the air glittered maliciously from the glare of the sun. The resplendent sky graced my sight for a split second before the lush green tree tops and then collided with the solid brown dirty ground. Thud. As hot metal and splinters rained all about me, the smell of burning rubber and gasoline burned my nose. The tanker truck jackknifed and exploded. “Oof!” I swore I broke a rib. Blood trickled down my forehead, warm and sticky. I stared at the mangled wreck that had once been good vehicles and a dreadful lump developed in my throat. A second explosion thundered and I swiftly dropped my face on the grass with my

I did not care about what was up with these two. Raina was priority. The mate bond wrenched at me in a silent cry from her that only I could hear. Missing the softness of holding her hands and basking in her endearing presence, hugging, touching, gazing—I just can't go on without it.“I'm pissed too because the future hasn't changed and at some point, you'll give the dick away.” Devin aired bluntly. “How could you? My head pounded with hazy memories, and I missed her pleasantly cool scent so badly. With her beautiful burgundy...Oh, fuck!I bolted up from the bed, and pain exploded on my side, spasming up and down my torso. Immediately, I glanced down at the three stitches that I just accidentally ripped, blood trickling down my side and into my gray sweatpants.Angry at myself for not knowing how long I’d been asleep, I yanked the IV line from my arm.Cursing silently while gritting my teeth against the agony, I barged out of the bedroom, ignoring the trail of blood I left on the umber-weave pattern of the vinyl plank flooring.Dizzy waves swept over me as I descended the stairs, determined for someone to tell me that it was a damn nightmare. RAINA’S POV“Kókkino, I don't know,” Gustav replied with understanding in a low voice. His words lingered, heavy with an edge of doubt. “The sword should have taken his life.”I swallowed hard and confessed dejectedly, “I wanted to believe him, but he can’t be the real Valen.”Gustav hummed thoughtfully and moved to the foot of the bed to remove my shoes.Flashes of the harrowing hurt in the last Valen’s eyes made my forlorn heart sink deeper and deeper. It seemed nearly genuine, yet it was not. It was a mask to get me to lower my guard. I was glad that I didn’t let the bond derail the mission this time.My eyes trailed to my guardian, and I expressed, “The timekeepers were so cruel. This is my ninth trial, and if he's not my Valen, he'll kill me again. As an anomaly, they've cursed me to die over and over.”“Then I will protect you,” Gustav swore, putting down my shoes at the bedside while his gaze met mine. The sincerity and promise were clear in his voice.“How long do you think I

RAINA’S POV I lingered behind Gustav as we arrived by teleportation at a sprawling lakeside manor. With urgency, he stalked off down a corridor that cut straight through the house. I broke off into a little jog to keep up with his large strides. Walking by his side, I felt curious and apprehensive about where he had taken me. Warm tones guided me through the great hall. Feeling antsy, my head pirouetted in the unfamiliar environment. Gaping archways revealed sitting rooms, recreational rooms, a grand dining room, and others. Each was filled with soothing terra cotta tones from walls painted in red earth color. “Nice safe house,” I remarked as he led me up the winding stairs, overwhelmed by the sheer size of it.Layers of vintage finds, painted artwork, and houseplants created a classical, inviting effect across the spaces. Together with white and green accents, the wall's reddish tone produced a muted color scheme that brought a diverse range of furniture pieces in a harmoniously b

Do not attack him, Zuzu. Do not deliberately make me jealous. My wolf is unsettled as it is. You are mine,” I muttered into her ear, and she flinched with resistance.Swinging her sabre-rattling eyes sideways, she expostulated, “I’ll chose him a million times over you, you fake bastard!”What the hell was this? She was protecting him—choosing him?Wanting to go with

Mate!” Zeus purred, going into overdrive to touch what was ours.Thank fuck.“Ugh!” She groaned, landing face-down, and something clattered on the floor. My body jumped to life as her rich scent wrapped around the entirety of my being like thick vines.“She came back to us!” Zeus’ rear end started to twitch and wiggle in excitement to see our beautiful mate.Gladness pumped my heart wildly, and my feet moved briskly before my wolf shouted at me to go to her. Zuzu flapped her giant wings in flight towards her regular spot on a custom-designed tree branch in the corner.I rushed towards Raina, dropping to my knees and gently grabbing her shoulders to help her to stand. My heart danced with delight when the sparks erupted across my palms from the skin-to-skin contact.“She’s back,” Zeus howled in my chest with joy and enthusiasm, jumping up on his two hind legs.Raina's legs gave

VALEN’S POVEighty-four hours.Three and a half days. It’s been that long since I’ve been home and without my precious Luna. Precious time was being wasted when I should have been able to go after her. That knowledge and helplessness weighed heavy on my chest, obstructing every labored inhale.Detached from everything, I wallowed in heart-shattering misery. With a deep scowl, I ran my thumb over the inscriptions of the golden bracelet as my mind worked overtime. My brain felt like it was on a treadmill, unable to stop.At this point, my eyes were hooded and void and my brain wasn't far from becoming the same. Frazzled and throbbing.“You’re the reason she disappeared.” Zeus snarled in my head, castigating me for putting Vaheed over our mate. He rambled, “If we weren’t away, we would have been here to stop her. I told you to leave him alone, but no, you had to go and bring him back. Are you trying to make us mateless?”My throat was too parched to argue with him.The worst had happened

VALEN’S POVAll their heartbeats rose, thundering against their chests. Devin quickly scurried over to the witch’s side.My eyebrows met. My face scrunched up and I pointed at Penn. My voice was incensed, and my teeth clashed together. “You let her go?”They visibly sagged under the weight of my temper. Anger pulsed through my chest, the upcoming headache didn't help his bitch fit either.“Well, I—um, I, er,” Pennelope stuttered and Devin frowned, spinning around to cup her face before facing me again.Letting out a breath of disbelief, I felt like my whole world was caving in. My vision went spotty as I pictured Raina lost and on her own in an unfamiliar world, and this witch did nothing to help her when she had the means.“It’s not that simple. I tried to stop her…” Penn explained, shaking her head, and went into more detail, stumbling over her words. “...once she saw Snow, she decided to go AWOL.”"Slow down, Penn." Devin guided me because at this point she was mumbling, and I didn

VALEN’S POV “Beta?” I scowled in the witch's basement after descending the last step of the stairs.Thick tension greeted me. One built on apprehension and fear. They were as scared as a kitten that had just noticed the shadow of a dog’s tail lashing against a white wall. I could feel the weight of their trepidatious stares pressing against me. Their fretting, whispering thoughts practically radiated off them like static.Zeus growled low and ferociously in my chest, unsettled by the hangdog silence. The implication of guilt hung heavily in the air.My anxious eyes roamed every inch of the space, skipping through the bookshelves, futons, chairs, and stone tables seeking the one woman that my soul ached for. Seeing no trace of her, my longing hammered our bond with impatience. An outburst climbed up my throat to be lashed out, only to be hindered when Venus flew at me. I swallowed the impending words. She gripped the front of my black shirt and tugged it repeatedly. Immense anxiety fu
