Ophelia
“Chin up, girl! Oh, and tuck that stomach of yours in. Honestly, try not to look so pathetic, Ophelia. You’re being mated to an Alpha.” Mother muttered quietly, “Goddess only knows how that one happened.”
I bit my tongue when she yanked the front of my simple cotton dress down, exposing a fair amount of cleavage. Speaking up would only make things worse. She might not be able to strike my face, but she knew how to punish without leaving marks.
“Yes, Lucille.”
She didn’t care for when I called her mother. Apparently, it made her feel old. That didn’t stop Astrid and Kimberly from calling her it, but they’d always been her favorites.
Mother snared a lock of my strawberry-blonde hair and tugged hard. Her flat, dark eyes scoured my face in search of a flinch or wince. “You should have let me dye this mess for you. Alas, it’s too late. Not that it matters in the slightest.” She said with the wave of her hand, “Soon enough, you’ll be someone else’s problem.”
A problem, that’s what I was.
I swallowed down my retort and focused on tonight’s ceremony. A flutter of excitement curled in my belly. It happened so suddenly, without rhyme or reason. One moment I’d been walking the halls of Aberdeen High, ready to empty out my locker after graduating, and the next there he was.
My mate.
Alpha Hunter West, the golden-eyed football player that every she-wolf within a hundred-mile radius wanted to be seen with.
The fact that the bond snapped into place on both sides was rare, and a good sign according to Hunter’s father. We’d been in school with one another for four years, passing in the halls without ever speaking a word.
It was like a fairytale. Even more so if you considered the hefty sum Hunter’s father was paying Lucille for my hand in marriage.
Were our customs a bit archaic? Yes. Were things moving a bit fast? Also yes, but this was my chance to escape Lucille and my sisters. The only other option I had was to wait three years until my twenty-first birthday. The inheritance my father had left for me would finally reach my hands, but I knew I wouldn’t last that long.
The sharp sting of nails digging into the back of my neck pulled me from my daydream. I made the mistake of hissing, the sound escaping without warning.
Mother’s lips curled. Her eyes, which could go from innocent to pits of writhing darkness within seconds, flashed dangerously. “Listen here, girl. You will not embarrass me tonight, understand? You’ll smile, keep that mouth of yours shut, and do as your told.”
Ignoring the angry snarl of my wolf, I averted my eyes and dropped my head in submission. It was becoming harder and harder to control her as of late.
“Yes, Lucille.”
With her hand still clasped over the back of my neck, she dragged me down the front steps of the manor and to the car parked out front. I quickened my pace to keep from toppling over. The driver, one of Alpha Hunter’s men, smiled politely and bobbed his head at the two of us.
We were driven into the forest surrounding the Sun Pack, also known as the “golden lands” due to the fields of swaying grass that looked like spun gold beneath the blistering summer sun.
There was still a slight breeze going, which kept me from becoming too sweaty during the walk down the trail. Up ahead, illuminated by a string of torches, was the hill of the Goddess. The small swell of land was perched directly beneath the moon itself.
A large crowd had already formed around the base, the majority made up of people my age. Standing at the top, his broad shoulders pulled back and head held high, was my mate. The sun kissed strands of his hair were pale beneath the moonlight, curling around his chiseled jaw.
The dark polo he wore was stretched taut across his muscular chest. It hugged the hard ridges of his toned stomach, right down to the jeans that sat low on his waist. Hunter West had the body of an athlete, and the instincts of an Alpha.
The moment I stepped into view, dragged up the hill by Lucille, his eyes widened. He drank me in, his gaze lingering on my flaming cheeks before running down my hair and over the little cotton dress I wore. His lips tipped up smugly.
I wasn’t surprised by his stunned reaction. I’d become an expert at making myself invisible. Blending into the background was one of my favorite hobbies after all.
Too bad the crowd didn’t feel the same way. The other she-wolves in the pack hadn’t taken the news well. As if they needed another reason to hate my guts.
Hunter’s father stepped forward and addressed the crowd of people. “Thank you everyone for gathering here to celebrate the mating of my son, your Alpha, and the pack’s future Luna! On this beautiful night, she will release her wolf and pledge her mind, body, and soul to Hunter. Without further ado, lets begin!”
The crowd cheered, and with the smile of a snake, Lucille pushed me forward.
Tripping over my own two feet, I careened towards the ground. Hunter’s hands shot out to catch me, grabbing my arms before I could hit the grass. Sparks raced up my shoulders and coaxed a gasp from between my lips.
Eyes of pure gold twinkled in the low torch light. “Woah, easy there. You look beautiful tonight, Opal.”
The smile melted from my face. Did he really not know my name? I stepped back as he released me, my cheeks once again burning, though this time with shame.
Was wanting him to know who I was too much to ask? No, I could handle this. Anything was better than being stuck with Lucille, Kimberly, and Astrid.
His father motioned to the crowd, “Ms. Hawkins, you may disrobe and shift into your wolf now.”
This was the part I was dreading.
It wasn’t that my body was ugly, or undesirable. Apart from the fact that my breasts were much larger than the rest of me, there was nothing wrong with it. What I hated was the softness of my curves. The distinct lack of muscle on my thighs, stomach, and rear. She-wolves were almost always physically fit. It was just another point of contention between Lucille and me.
I made quick work of slipping the straps over my shoulders, flinching when the cool breeze caressed my chest and raced between my legs. The pale fabric fell to the ground at my feet. A sea of murmurs kicked up. I gave into the roaring in my ears, allowing it to blot out the individual voices.
As Hunter’s eyes dipped below my collar bones, he snarled approvingly.
Goddess, could this get any more embarrassing? The urge to fold my arms over my chest was so strong that the shame alone coaxed my wolf to the surface.
Pain surged up my limbs, wrapping around my bones as my body began to change. Fur the same odd shade as my hair sprouted from my arms and legs. Seconds later, I fell to the ground. My four large paws sinking into the chilled grass.
The faces surrounding the base of the hill were now visible thanks to my enhanced vision, which only elevated the tension I could now taste in the air. It was stifling, clogging my lungs with notes of disdain, jealousy, and outright hatred.
These people didn’t want me here.
They didn’t want me to be their Luna.
A low growl rumbled in my chest. It was a clear warning to those watching that they needed to leave. Hunter’s father stepped towards us with furrowed brows and a stiff jaw.
“Control your wolf, girl. Submit to my son.”
Hearing his ultimatum, she craned her head his way and unleashed a menacing growl. Several gasps rang out amongst the crowd, Lucille’s included. Goddess, she was going to skin my hide for this.
‘Stop snarling. You’re making us look bad. This isn’t what we’re supposed to do, and you know it.’ I pleaded with my wolf.
Her refusal washed over me, resolute in its intensity, prompting me to freeze in horror.
She wasn’t going to submit.
Hunter’s father released a snarl of his own, which my wolf ignored. He turned to his son, “Use your Alpha command. Force her to submit to you.”
He wouldn’t, would he? My beast refused to believe our mate would do such a thing—refused to believe he’d break our trust before it was even built.
Hunter’s golden eyes seemed troubled, full of conflict that reached its peak when he puffed out his chest and growled, “Submit, Opal.”
Pain streaked up my chest as he once again called me by the wrong name. It’s Ophelia, I wanted to shriek. The force of his command rattled our bones, calling to the very essence of who we were.
As if things couldn’t get any worse, my wolf turned on him and pulled back her muzzle, revealing our pearly teeth in an act of pure dominance.
Not only did my wolf ignore his Alpha command, but she had just challenged him for his position.
“Submit! Do as I say, Opal.” Hunter’s voice hardened. Eyes that had once resembled two pools of liquid gold now reminded me of burnt bronze.
Again and again his command washed over me, sinking deep into my body. The tug to do his bidding was there, but it wasn’t this impenetrable force others had described it as. It didn’t steal away my free will.
Such a thing wasn’t possible, and yet my wolf refused to submit.
Hunter’s father began to redden with anger. Two meaty fists were clenched at his side, practically trembling. Without a word, he yanked a small canister out of his pocket and ripped off the cap.
A whine slid from my muzzle as my wolf realized what the object was. Just as we took a step back, his father sprayed the silver shavings into our face. My bare bottom hit the cold grass and I yelped.
Yanking my dress off the ground, I quickly slid it over my body and stumbled to my feet. The stares of our people pelted me at every angle, their whispers digging into my skin. Never in my life had I been so embarrassed, so ashamed of myself and my unruly wolf.
“You understand what you need to do, right? She issued a clear challenge and disrespected your authority as Alpha. There is no forgiveness for that.”
I closed my eyes and prayed that when I opened them I’d be somewhere else—anywhere else.
“Look at me, Opal.” Hunter’s stern voice coaxed them open.
“It’s Ophelia.”
The words slid from my mouth, so quiet that he craned his head and replied, “What?”
“My name is Ophelia.”
He flinched, a flurry of emotion warming those golden eyes. The only reason I wasn’t ashamed to admit I derived the smallest amount of pleasure from his reaction was because I knew what was coming next. Nothing could’ve prepared me for the agony that was hearing those words fall from his lips.
“I, Alpha Hunter West, reject you, Ophelia Hawkins, as my mate and Luna. I decline your challenge and banish you from this pack from now until the end of your days. Do you accept?”
A hollow ache took root in my chest, one I knew would haunt me for the rest of my life.
“I, Ophelia Hawkins, accept your rejection.”
With a whisper carried by the Goddess’s winds, the mate-bond snapped in two.
OpheliaPain raced up the side of my face as Lucille’s hand made contact with my cheek.“You petulant girl, are you even listening to me?”I wasn’t.“Yes, Lucille.”Two of the movers entered in through the front door, sparing me from hearing her retort. A slimy smile wormed its way across her nude painted lips. She clasped her hands together and cooed at the men tasked with carrying the furniture out to the truck. The dirty look she shot me over her shoulder was a warning that this conversation wouldn’t be forgotten. It was hard to care when the shredded bond in my chest writhed in agony, leaving me in near-constant pain.Astrid flounced down the stairs, turning her slender nose up at me as she passed. The wheels of her designer suitcase whirled softly against the hardwood floor. Inside was all the clothes, shoes, and make-up she’d need for the week it would take the movers to transport all their stuff. With my lonesome duffle bag tucked neatly in the trunk of the Bentley, there was n
Ophelia Sun block, and ocean mist. Those were the scents of my childhood, the ones that clung to the bits and pieces of the half-formed memories rattling around in my skull. I breathed each one in through the tiny bedroom window at the tippy top of Lucille’s modernistic nightmare of a beach villa. She’d stuffed me in the attic like a frail Victorian child she was afraid of the neighbors seeing. Little did she know, she was doing me a favor. Kimberly, my older sister, was moving out of her dorm at Eclipse University and back home to be closer to our darling mother. Why she felt the need to come back when she only lived thirty minutes away, I’d never know. That made the attic my safe haven. “Ophelia!” Or so I’d thought. I rolled out of bed, sneezing when a plume of dust hit my nose. It was like she purposefully kept the attic in shambles. Whatever, at least it would give me a project to focus on. The door creaked as I opened it, “Yes, Lucille?” “Make yourself presentable and

I know Kim-Kim’s done a thing or two in her past.” Diana smacked her glossed lips as we sped down the blackened highway into Eclipse City.Chloe, the bubbly blonde in the back seat, laughed loudly.“We won’t tell a soul!”The surly, narrow-eyed Gemma mimed zipping her lips and throwing away the key. I knew what I told them would make the rounds throughout the entirety of Lunar Isle.I rummaged around, sorting through memories that bubbled in my gut like acid. Without warning, they began to spew from my mouth. Word after word, I told Diana and her friends all about the kind of person Kimberly was. Each transgression lingered in the air, and for the life of me I couldn’t stop talking.First grade she’d pelted me with rocks and clumps of mud on the walk to school. Third grade she’d chopped my hair off and laughed as I cried. Fifth she shredded every article of clothing I owned, leaving them in tatters. Seventh and she’d already rallied the entire school agai
OpheliaI brought it to my lips and inhaled, immediately chucking the thing at Denver when my lungs seized. A cough tore at my chest, so strong that my eyes watered. No matter how hard I tried to breathe in, all I could do was hack and cough. It tasted awful. Like burnt grass and chewed lavender. The four of them chuckled, descending into laughter that rang heavily in my ears. Heat warmed my cheeks, carrying embarrassment that quickly faded when Sarah herself erupted in a fit of wet coughing. When I finally managed to stop, I realized I felt different. There was this odd sensation dancing along my skin, like little bursts of electricity. As they burrowed deep, they melted into a blissful numbness that had my shoulders drooping and eyelids growing heavy.Goddess, what was this stuff?Coop rolled his head my way, “Nice, isn’t it? It’s official name is Dark Matter. Think of it as the magical version of weed. It’s blessed by a witch with an earth affinity, so it’s extra potent.”I blinked
JudeRevving the engine of my bike, I peeled out of the garage and into the blanket of night enshrouding the idyllic neighborhood of Crescent Hills.Normally I’d tap into my nature magic and shift, either taking to the skies or forest, but I wanted to conserve my strength. Not that it mattered in the slightest. The opponents at La Stella were abysmal at best.Ryker was going to be pissed, but when wasn’t he pissed? After enduring that group spell with his preening girlfriend, I needed to blow off some steam. It was either that or I slit her throat and be done with it.Now, that would piss him off.It had taken us long enough to get our coven together and in line, and the last thing my noble half-brother wanted to do was hunt down his girlfriend’s younger sister to fill the empty spot.I didn’t particularly care what he wanted, but I also didn’t feel like dealing with his wrath. The guy was a thorn in my damn side, but he was probably the only soul on earth I gave a fuck about.Plus, w
OpheliaOnly once I was far away from Jude’s intoxicating scent did I finally allow myself to breathe. One blink and I was no longer standing within the graffiti painted walls of La Stella. Instead, I was curled up in the passenger seat of an expensive car. It was the drug messing with my head. There was no reason Jude would’ve done such a terrible thing unprompted. The oxygen in the car thinned even further as I fought for breath. The blocker was still suppressing my scent, so the bond hadn’t snapped into place for him. That meant it had to be my imagination, or a trick of the eyes.Denver snapped his fingers in front of my face. When had he become so pale?“For fucks sake, pay attent
OpheliaAlpha Ryker pinched the bridge of his nose. The look he tossed Jude’s way was nothing short of furious. Instead of scolding the guy or telling him to knock off whatever it was he was doing, he turned to Nova and snarled, “Explain things to her, will you? I do not have the patience for this.”Clearly, Jude had some sort of death wish because he threw his head back and laughed. Well, it was his version of a laugh. All ice and razor-sharp steel.“What exactly do you have the patience for?” He asked, folding his tatted arms over his chest.Nova, the only one who wasn’t sneering down at me or looking at me as though I were an unwanted piece of trash washed up on a pristine shore, lowered herself onto the bench at my side. Her pale-blonde hair floated around her shoulders, rustled by a gentle breeze.“We’re not a cult,” She said gently, as though she were talking to a wild animal. “We’re a coven. A coven of witches. You do know what witches are, don’t you?”I nodded slowly. Of cours
OpheliaRecognizing Kimberly’s voice, I shuffled closer to the door. Careful not to nudge it open, I flattened myself against the wall and listened.“She’s a backstabbing, conniving bitch. She’ll tear us apart and play with the scraps.” Kimberly sucked in a sharp breath as though she were on the verge of crying. “You have no idea what she’s done. She’s the reason I moved back here last year.”I bit my tongue hard enough to draw blood. She was lying, blatantly lying to Alpha Ryker’s face. Kimberly had moved back to Lunar Isle after receiving a scholarship to their university. Her decision had nothing to do with me. Not a damned thing.“Tell me what happened, mí amor.” [my love]Ryker’s voice was neither angry nor patient. It was flat, brimming with silent command that had my stomach twisting into knots.“She—She,” Kimberly took a steadying breath, “She ruined my marriage to Alpha Hunter. My mother set it up when I was sixteen, and the moment Ophelia found out about it she made it her l
OpheliaRyker blinked once, then threw his head back and roared with such veracious laughter that the entire pizza shop went silent. He cleared his throat, his eyes darting around. I watched in awe as the Alpha of the island blushed.I pointed at him, the smile on my face for once genuine. “That’s exactly what you get for laughing at me.”“Tell me what happened next,” He said, his eyes sparkling. “What did your teachers do? What about the other students?”“They were all horrified, obviously! It was dead silent too, and when I made it to the door I tried to pull myself up, but my damn foot was still asleep.” Laughter was bubbling out of me now too, trickling like a leaky faucet. “I had to nudge the door open and crawl out into the hallway. Goddess, it was mortifying.”“That is pretty bad, but it’s got nothing on my story.” Ryker said with such assurance that my laughter faded, and I instead raised my brows at him.“Really? Pray tell, Alpha. You don’t seem like the type to embarrass.”H
Ophelia“You’ve been suspiciously absent from our family dinners,” I pointed out, chomping into a bite of pizza for emphasis. My eyes rolled back, and I practically moaned. Pizza should not be that good.A smug smile flashed across his face, and I decided it looked absurdly good on him.“I’ve been busy.”Busy was an understatement. He missed the last four, which was unusual. I had only started attending them to keep Jude from playing his twisted pranks. He thought it was hilarious when he moved every single piece of furniture from the dining room to my bedroom.Truthfully, I wasn’t all that angry about it anymore.Eating dinner with Jude wasn’t the worst thing in the world. We talked about everything but the glaring issues between us, which is exactly how I wanted it. I never would have thought, but Jude enjoyed all things art. We spent one evening going over every book we’d ever read. My list was limited since I hadn’t read for enjoyment since we moved from Alpha Hunter’s pack, but J
OpheliaMy head throbbed and my mouth tasted faintly of alcohol as I stumbled out of bed that morning. The room spun slightly as I made my way to the bathroom, my bladder screaming with each wobbly step. I gripped the doorframe for support and physically recoiled when I flicked on the lights.Magic surged out of me like a whip and the bulbs lining the mirror exploded, sending sparks raining down. I let out an inhuman groan and flicked my hand at the mess, sending the glass skittering into a neat pile. My head throbbed again.Cold water trickled down my face as I hunched over the sink. Little pinpricks of cold radiated across the apples of my cheeks. They were almost as red as my blood-shot eyes. Staring at my reflection, a sudden clarity pierced through the fog of my killer hangover.I couldn’t keep going on like this, relying on alcohol to chase the nightmares away. Quite frankly, I hated the stuff. Why did it have to taste so awful? No, I couldn’t do this anymore. I needed that poti

I needed something to drink that wasn’t straight liquor. So, I made myself a martini, extra dirty.I was putting the vodka and vermouth back when the temperature in the room began to rise. Warmth like molten honey began to drip down my spine in a rhythm my body had memorized. Panic seized me and my throat closed, causing me to choke. As I coughed into my fist, my eyes watering, I could feel that warmth grow and spread. That was how the ghost—or whatever the fuck it was—made itself known. I didn’t know how long it had been here. It only started acting up recently. I immediately went to Sterling since he was practically an expert on the dead, but even he couldn’t help.“I can’t get a read on it. NovaI was no stranger to guilt.I had seen it appear like a shadow on the wall the day we found out our mother died. Since then I could feel it looming over my shoulder those moments where I failed to protect Coop—failed to help guide and raise him the way I promised her. There were bad moments, like seeing my brother strapped to a bed at the same asylum Alpha Ryker’s father stayed at, where it felt like the shadow wasn’t just leaning over my shoulder, but whispering in my ear.Five more hairs, only five. I reached up and tugged them at the root, chewing on my lower lip as I felt each one pop free. They lay in my hand like strands of pale ribbon.Mom always loved my hair.Things hadn’t always been this way, but I no longer could remember a time where the guilt didn’t gnaw at me. Over the years it had grown into a bigger beast than even my wolf could tame.“You do know that we’ll have to find some way to disguise me, right?” Ophelia said as I walked back into the room. OpheliaAfter that night at Edwards I realized that alcohol helped chase the nightmares away. It wasn’t sustainable, and I knew that, but it at least bought me a few nights’ sleep while I tried to figure something else out.Sneaking out to the library again was becoming an impossibility, so I had no way to look for my own alternative. I had no clue how Ryker managed to run an entire island, when I could barely manage a hundred. There was always someone who needed something from me, and even with Aisha’s help I felt like a child playing at being an adult.I quickly became tempted to accept the potion Jude offered instead, which he left outside of my door every single night, but why should I?He agreed to give me that potion, not some replacement. He could deny it and twist my words however he wanted, but I wasn’t going to give in. He couldn’t walk all over me just because we shared some bond. When Nova’s ‘friend date’ rolled around later that week I was almost relieved. That was until

Anything was better than thinking. The forest gave way to soft dunes as I neared the coastline. My paws sank into the sand, slowing my pace. I walked, my chest still heaving from exertion. He was the one that introduced her to that potion instead of getting her the help she needed. I wasn’t exactly the biggest spokesperson for mental health, but I made a promise the night I lost Ophelia and that was to never ignore the signs. Our girl was struggling, and if we could see it then surely her own flesh and blood could.I read Morningstar’s body language the few times we saw him and either he was a damned good actor—as good as myself—or he genuinely felt something for Ophelia. OpheliaAfter one last game we returned to our table for another round of drinks and for some crappy bar food.“Cheese fries.” I moaned, not caring that the waitress had given Jude the food whilst completely ignoring me. My stomach let out a snarl, the vicious kind that came when you had a few too many drinks. “At least there’s one good thing left in this world.”Jude took a drink of his whiskey. “Is that what you think? That there’s nothing good left in the world.”I licked some cheese off the tip of my thumb. “It’s what I know.”“If you’re here that means there’s good left in the world. That’s what I know.” He said, simply put. This wasn’t him trying to be charming, it was just Jude. The laugh I let out was one I didn’t recognize. “I’m not good anymore.”“That’s a load of shit. Since when?”“Doesn’t matter.”“No, you said it, now follow through. You’re not good anymore, fine. When did it happen? What made you go full dark side? I’m going to assume it wasn’t Ryker and I, because you
