FIFTY

I stepped out of my car and drive into university campus, and I glanced through the crowds for a glimpse of Ruth. Sandra had told me she was here, and I had to see it for myself. I had to know why she'd left the pack without a word.

I walked through the hallway, I noticed a group of students gathered around a bulletin board, admiring a flyer for an art exhibition. My eyes fixed on a painting that seemed out of place among the others - a beautiful, haunting piece that seemed to capture the essence of the forest. I felt a pang of recognition, and my heart skipped a beat as I realized it was Ruth's work.

I followed the signs to her dormitory, my mind racing with questions. Why had she left? What I s she doing here? And why was she still hiding from me?

I knocked on the door, and a moment later, Ruth opened it, looking hesitant. "John," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Ruth," I replied, trying to keep my tone neutral. "Can I come in?"
