"You are welcome to the team." Leo said to me as we stepped into the elegant elevator.
"Thank you." I replied gently. "We are heading to the fortieth floor now, the training will be held there. But our main office is on the forty-two floor." He explained and I nodded, trying to be as polite as I could. We got to the fortieth floor and stepped out of the ride, then I saw some other people littering around. The ladies were in the same uniform as me and the guys too wore uniforms in the same colour shade. They all were in twos and it seemed like they were waiting for the training to start.
"Attention everyone!" I was surprised when Leo stepped forward to do that. We got their attention and then placed his hands against the other to his back, maintaining a stoic and professional stance. He acted quite differently from the person I had met earlier in the elevator.
"Good morning, ladies and gents. I am Leo, one of your instructors for today's training. The training starts in seven minutes, at the board room 001 and you all are required to be seated quietly there till other instructors arrive." He said and then they all complied, walking towards a certain direction.
I guessed I was to follow them so I did without been told. He no longer said anything to me as I followed the crowd to the supposed 'Board room 001'.
I was more worried about how I would cope among these strange people. Friends? I did not know how to put them. I did not even have the willpower to hold a conversation with strangers for long. The board room was a spacious one with neatly arranged corporate chairs and a moderate podium where the instructors would be seated I guess.
I could see people fighting for the front spaces and the immediate ones after them but I just remained standing at the door and let them do their thing. Then there was just one seat left, at the very last row. I had no choice but I did not mind it so I went there to sit.
We were about thirty people in the room, there were enough chairs but I still could not understand why they would struggle for certain seats.Immediately after we were all seated, some people dressed corporately also walked in, with straight faces. They all slipped into the seats at the podium. I looked at their faces clearly for Leo but he was not among them. I thought he said he was one of the instructors.
One of them who was a lady started speaking into the table mic in front of her. "Good morning, everyone." She said and we responded.
"Just a reminder, you are here for training to be a lobby agent in this resort. There are stages to this training but mind you, not everyone seated here will make it past the final stage. Out of thirty people seated here, we only need ten, so your performance will determine if you get Greenville's badge as a worker here." She announced then I realized it. No wonder they were all fighting for front seats, they probably thought we would be picked randomly so they had to secure good spaces.Silent murmurs arose amidst us the moment she finished speaking. I mean, it was crazy, was it not? Ten people out of thirty desperate people? Okay...
I was not shaken, I kept my cool and had my back straightened up as my focus and attention were just on the instructors.Soon the noise died and then she continued speaking. "You all will be given some items you will be needing throughout this training in a few minutes. Also, for today, all we will be doing is lecturing you on who a lobby agent is, what they do, what they don't do, the ethics, regulations and some other things you need to know. Some of us will be coming up to narrate our experience as lobby agents so you can learn from them also. On that note, please remain in your seats quietly as the items are being passed around." She instructed and turned off the mic.
In the meantime, some ladies and guys who wore different uniforms from us came into the room and started giving around a moderate box.
As soon as they were done, they left and the female speaker from earlier continued. We were instructed to open the boxes which contained a black cover jotter, a customizer pen and a number badge."You are to use those writing materials during this training, and then the number badge is for your recognition." She explained.
I was number 2 even though I was at the very last row.Soon, the full training started as we sat under different lectures for hours. It was funny how I maintained my stance and posture throughout while some other people yawned consciously and subconsciously, stretched their hands and the likes. Some even dozed off. If there was any bit of change in my posture, it was crossing of legs. I did nothing apart from that.
I kept reminded myself that I was on a mission and I could not back down now even though I was tired and was not prepared for this.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the training for day one has come to an end. You may all return to your apartments and rest ahead of tomorrow's training. Any additional information will be passed across to you." The female speaker rounded up finally and they walked out of the room, leaving a set of devastated, exhausted and hungry people in the room.Noise rose as people stretched endlessly. My body has become numb so I had to remain on the chair for a while. People started leaving one after the other, chatting, laughing, grumbling so I just decided to remain in the room till they all left.
In the meantime, I did some meditation, trying to imagine what the next day would be like.
"Miss Mira." I heard someone call my name and turned to see Leo at the entrance of the room. "What are you still doing, sitting there?" He inquired as he approached me. I could not find the right words to reply him as he came closer."Everyone's down already and I was worried after discovering you were not amongst them." He expressed his worry and without thinking, I attempted to stand up.
"I am sorry, I was just--" my statement got cut off as I lost balance in my legs and fell. My legs were so numb.He moved closer quickly to help me up. "Are you alright?"
"I am okay, it's just...I have been sitting for too long." I said to him and he smiled. It was not funny Duhh. The lectures lasted for about seven hours."I passed out on my first day." He replied and I could not help but laugh. Passed out? That cracked me up.
"Really?" He nodded as he pulled me up from the floor. I was getting balanced again so I could stand. "I thought..you were going to be one of the instructors." I pointed out, no feelings attached by the way. "Yeah, my assignment got switched." He responded then I picked up my materials and we started walking out together."That aside. Karima says I should bring you."
Leo led me to Karima's office and left after he had a short talk with her. Her office was not something I had imagined; It was quite moderate but properly furnished and fit for her profession and rank. She had me sit and then started engaging me. "How was the training today?""It went quite well, Ms. Karima." I replied to her and she smiled. "Call me, Karima, everyone does. By the way, most people complained so much about the lengthy lecture hours so I expected that from you too."I clasped my hands together behind my back and sucked in my lips, not sure of how to reply to her. Then she smiled, as if she understood my plight. "It's alright by the way. I told Leo to bring you so you could have lunch here before you return to your apartment. I was wondering if you would not mind a brief tour in the resort too." A tour? A high ranking lobby agent like her was offering me a tour? I could not help but question her niceness within me, she definitely had other things to do, but she wanted
Training day two was soon here and like they said, it was not easy. It was more of a field training than a sit-listen lecture. We were firstly instructed to change into a fit gym wear instead of our uniforms, then we all hand weight scale. Most people were over the average and it took this new set of instructors nothing to make them lose proper weight within a few hours. Leo was one of them too and he had me specifically weighed by him. It turned out to be that I was about 3kg close to average. He raised his hand with his arms folded against his chest, looking confused."You don't eat beef? Chicken?" He raised his brows. For someone who spent over four months in prison, eating just vegetables, beans and water, how else could I have grown past the average weight?I only smiled gently at his question, I did not think I was meant to answer that. While others exercised under the hot sun, I remained sitting, drinking water from a Stanley cup. At some point, I was instructed to join th
For a while there, I thought I was dreaming, but I was not. How possible could it be? I clearly saw the man in the pool filled with bloody earlier so why was it looking like nothing had happened there?I had never been so confused in my entire life. Really?Karima turned around swiftly to face me and immediately, I started panicking. "I swear Karima, I am sure of what I saw." "Where is it now..Mira?" She asked but I had no reply to give her, no reasonable response."I am just as surprised. There was a man...here... literally...floating at the centre of this pool right here." I tried explaining even though I sounded crazy to myself, how would I convince her when I was also too confusion myself? She sighed and then brought out her phone. "Leo, don't bother. There's nothing." I heard her say then she dropped the call. I felt so bad that she probably felt I had alarmed them falsely."I am not lying, please. I am sure of what I saw." I persisted and then she released a soft, slight smile
Karima engaged me throughout the walk quite so well and by the time we returned to the huge apartment complex, we stopped at the point where we were going to part ways."I will be making something delicious for dinner, you want some?" She offered, smiling broadly. "Ugh... it's fine, you don't need to--""Mira, it's okay. I'll bring the food box to you later." She insisted and then I stepped out of the elevator, while she went up to her own floor. As I approached my door, I started feeling sore pains all over. "What's happening to me?" I muttered to myself as I tried dragging my feet into the apartment. The moment I got in, the pain became unbearable and I lost my balance. I had never felt like this in my entire life. I groaned loudly as I crawled into the living room in pains. "Ughh!!!" It was so loud and I was no longer sounding like myself. "What the fuck is going on?" I groaned loudly again and this time I felt my bones enlarging and poking out of my skin. My nails grew into
The leather coat Karima got for me turned out to be so nice on me. I stepped out of the room and had breakfast with her, then we started heading to the resort in her car.I felt the strong urge to ask her who she really was, I believed that would answer every other question that I had for her. After raising what turned out to be a false alarm about a dying person, she did not flinch or scold me at all, as if she knew and understood what i was talking about. My head was filled with these thoughts that I did not realize she was talking to me."What did you say?" I asked her, after getting to realize that she was speaking to me."You look lost, Mira. What's the problem?" She inquired, looking at me and also tried to focus on the wheel at the same time."Oh, it's just...a few things bothering my mind." I let out, hoping to lead something but I decided to back down."Care to share them?" She asked nicely and alluringly. "No, I would not want to bother you. I will get it sorted out." I re
I was officially a lobby agent at Greenvile, and a part of me felt excited. Leo brought me a tray that had a chest badge with my name engraved on it, a journal that had my name also engraved on it and a pen, meant to be tucked in my chest pocket.I fixed it all on and I was good to go. I followed him down to where-heavens-know because he had instructed me to follow, claiming that the whole of team 2 were waiting for me. We finally got there, and it turned out to be Karima's office. The meeting started as soon as we got there, with Leo going to where Karima was."Good morning everyone." Karima started. "For our new team members, I am Karima and here is my co-team lead, Leo." She paused and gave Leo room to make any further statements of introduction. He made some corporate gestures. I guess some people eventually made it past that training, and I felt bad that I did not get to experience the last phase of the training."So, you new members will get a manual from me, on how things h
I left the dressing room with Leo and headed to the first floor. "We are sorry for just arriving, Mira was stuck with preparing for her assignment." Leo said to Karima before I could even say anything. He defended me quite well there. The rest of the team were already around and so we had to be on two straight lines and then walked out the moment a convoy arrived at the entrance of the resort.I swallowed so hard, to totally suppress my anxiety and it was working. "I can do this." I muttered quietly to myself as the climax moment was here. One of the guys stationed at the entrance of the resort opened the door so the VVIP guest could step out and I stepped closer to the door, ready to welcome him. Leo had mentioned to me earlier that we all used to get a profiling on our guests to know the kind of person they were but Karima did not do this time around. The reason, he too could not explain.Either way, I trusted my long period of rehearsals to not fail me. I was meant to bow at nin
I later got his profile and I diligently went through it on the computer in my allocated space. It was a general office for the team but her spaces were demarcated well. Only the team leads, Karima and Leo, had their own special offices. My space wasn't bad actually. It was well furnished and we had a kitchen room where we could eat lunch, make instant coffee and tea, too. Leo forwarded the VVIP guest's profile to me and I was quick to go through it.Jordan Reign, 30, he barely talks-prefers to listen and observe, that was very obvious at our first meeting. He prefers a perfectly quiet environment, loves nature...and I guessed that was why his suite was openly facing the ocean, with green trees around, it was also stated that he was cranky and short-tempered.He loved absolute order and efficiency, cigars, and classical music. His dislikes stated noise and disorder, unnecessary attention, I guessed he preferred staying in the shadows. He hated it when people talked too much, we had t
