Matteo arrived at the firm late that day. Now that he was one, the partners didn’t worry about schedules, and he wasn’t in the mood for work as he should have been. He stepped out of the elevator absent-mindedly, not noticing Valeria approaching. When he looked up, a thousand-degree warmth surged through his body, startling him.

Valeria thought his behavior was strange, but didn’t say anything about it. She frowned when she saw the disapproval in Matteo’s eyes, as if he had been caught doing something wrong.

“Andreas is furious about your tardiness,” she warned, but Matteo snorted, rolling his eyes in dissatisfaction.

“I own half of this company,” he reminded her of reality, “so I’ll be there whenever I want.”

“That’s not good for business,” her words made him change his behavior. Now Matteo had a furious expression on his face, “which makes me think that owning the company is more your vanity than a desire to really help.”
