Giovana
The squeaky sound of the horn and skid tires on the track made Giovanna drop the bag he held and close his eyes so tightly he could feel his head throbbing in pain. Still trembling, she felt the hot steam coming out of the car’s hood touching her leg. When she finally opened her eyes, she could hardly believe the vehicle was that close to killing her. It would be another terrible tragedy in less than twenty-four hours. She looked up at the driver, who was already getting out of the car in a chaotic traffic, and walked furiously towards her.
“Baffling woman!” saliva’s slipped between her gritted teeth, “If you don’t look where you’re going, next time you won’t be so lucky”.
But she didn’t have time for those threats. She barely looked into the man’s eyes and walked away again when she remembered the bag he dropped. Five steps, she was back where she almost died, and the irresponsible driver, he was still there, saying absurd things that she wouldn’t even have a chance to answer.
With his heart still uncontrolled inside his chest, Giovanna entered the hospital and stopped in front of the reception desk. She closed her eyes momentarily, praying that Gina would be well and that she could calm down immediately, to the point of helping her.
“I came to see Gina Lens,” felt the words locking in her throat.
The receptionist analyzed the woman in front of her, looked back at the computer screen with pure disdain.
“Only family members can enter,” he said without looking into Giovanna’s eyes.
“I am her sister” concluded impatiently, “and I am responsible for paying all medical expenses”.
The receptionist’s face changed drastically and without filling out any information, she authorized the entry of Giovanna, indicating where she would find Gina.
As she walked hurriedly down the hall, not knowing exactly where she was going, Giovanna remembered the call she had received from her mother hours earlier.
“Gina was taken to the hospital. I need your help.”
It was always like that. Few words, no sentimentality and many demands. Giovanna was just a way to meet the needs of his mother and sister. But she loved Gina and couldn’t bear to consider losing her one day.
She saw her mother from afar and knew that it was there she should go. Irma, realizing her presence, looked at her with contempt and did not outline any reaction.
“How is she?” she asked, but the woman wouldn’t look at her.
It was as if Giovanna didn’t exist to her.
“How will I know?” The harshness in the words showed that Irma had no patience to talk to her, “she her confidant, you should know what Gina is up to.”
“Should I know?” closed her eyes, running her fingers over her aching temples, needed to calm down, arguing with Irma would not help Gina. “You brought her to the hospital without knowing why?”
“She complained of severe abdominal pain and even fainted in the car,” she concluded coldly, “they took her to a room and since then I have no news”.
Giovanna knew that Irma’s coldness was only due to her presence. Gina was always his favorite daughter, so she was sure that even though she didn’t care, inside Irma was devastated.
“And where is your husband?” first looked her in the eye. “I don’t know how Antony put up with you for so long.”
“I’m not here to hear your opinion about my marriage. I just want to see my sister.”
A mocking smile appeared on Irma’s lips, and before she could return the provocation, the bedroom door opened and a man came out from inside. He wore a coat and had a badge attached to him. He had a tired appearance, as if bringing devastating news.
“Are you related to Gina Lens?”
“I am her mother,” she said, proudly desperate, repulsing Giovanna.
“Unfortunately, Gina will need a blood transfusion. She has severe anemia”.
“Is she at risk of life?” Giovanna widened his eyes without believing what he heard.
“Unfortunately, yes,” replied the doctor, and Giovanna did not like what he perceived in his countenance.
“Are you telling me that Gina might die?” Irma went into despair. Irma’s maternal tenderness was directed only at Gina. His whole life was like that.
On the other side, Giovanna tried to assimilate the information. How did Gina’s health reach that point? Or maybe she didn’t even know her condition was so bad, or was she too embarrassed to tell?
Still standing in the hallway, Giovanna felt her phone vibrate. She looked at the screen and saw a phone call from Antony. The air rushed into her lungs as she took a deep breath before serving him.
“Where are you now?” but he didn’t wait for her to respond, proceeded coldly as if she didn’t care for the answer, “We have a meeting with the lawyer in half an hour for reading Nicholas’s will”.
Giovanna had forgotten about this compromise. Her breathing was so heavy that she did not even notice the presence of anyone else in the hallway.
“I’m sorry, Antony. I was so worried about Gina that I completely forgot.”
“I don’t need your excuses, Giovanna.” it was harsh, as it always was, “I need you here, now.”
Giovanna’s face was contorted with bitterness, and she just obeyed her husband’s orders. She always obeyed.
“I’m in the city hospital”.
It was clear that she wanted to explain to Antony that Gina needed her at that time, but Antony would neither listen to her nor accept her apology. She knew him so well that she knew how insignificant his existence was to her husband.
“The driver is coming to get you”.
“Antony, I can’t leave here now. Gina needs me…”
“I don’t care,” he said in a surprisingly low tone. “I don’t have time for that. Just obey me”.
Giovanna felt a rush of adrenaline running through all of her limbs, each of her nerves awakening as she tried to understand her husband’s own coldness. But before she considered answering, the call was terminated. When she returned to reality, she realized that her mother was still talking to the doctor about Gina’s delicate state. Then she came closer.
“Giovanna and Gina have the same blood type, she could be the donor.”
Irma wasn’t happy to say it, but she would do whatever it took to save her favorite daughter’s life. What she didn’t know was that she was putting Giovanna in a delicate situation.
“Great!” cheered the doctor, “we can do it right now”.
“I can’t,” Giovanna felt her heart break between having to choose to follow Antony’s orders or help save her sister. “I can’t right now. I’m late for an appointment with Antony”.
“Can’t you?” Irma seemed dissatisfied. “What kind of commitment is more important than saving your sister’s life?
But Giovanna, without having time for speeches, shrugged and turned his attention to the doctor.
“Tell me, doctor,” Giovanna asked with difficulty, “Can Gina hold out for a few hours? You must promise me that you will keep her alive until I return.
“I can’t promise you that,” he said, shaking his head, “but I can try my best.”
Giovanna tried to swallow her own saliva, but her throat did not obey. She began to drift away.
“If Gina dies, know that it’s your fault, Giovanna. Yours alone.”
Halfway through her outburst, Irma had lowered her gaze and now stared at the ground. Her last words echoed throughout the hospital ward, and Irma waited for her to change her mind, but Giovanna remained silent and finally left.
Two days ago, Nicholas, Antony’s father, was buried with honors from a good man. Nicholas was the man who saved Giovanna from Irma’s evils when she was still a teenager. This was a story that Giovanna could not explain properly, because he found too much irony of fate or luck, but he knew that before his father died, he made Nicholas promise that he would take care of her and give his life to save her from the evils of her own mother. And that’s what he did in memory and respect for his best friend. He sponsored Giovanna, put her to study in one of the best colleges, and gave her peace and dignity. But the big surprise would come later. Nicholas made an unusual request to Giovanna, who, out of gratitude, could not refuse. “Marry my son Antony,” he said. At the time, Giovanna barely knew Antony, only by photos or stories that Nicholas himself told about him. Antony had lived in the United States for more than five years. He studied engineering at one of the best colleges in the cou
Gina Died. These words seemed like the perfect remedy to drive Giovanna insane for good. She put both hands on her head and felt like it wasn’t real. A young girl, who had dreams, was gone. And it was all her fault and her inability to face her husband. If I had just been a little bit brave one more time, Gina would still be alive. The memories of two days ago, when he said goodbye to Nicholas, invaded his mind. The immeasurable pain, the loss of a man who had saved him, still destroyed his heart. Now they mingled with the pain of losing his sister. "What was so important that you couldn’t save Gina? Irma, now with the smudged makeup, held Giovanna’s blouse tightly, but the terror was in her eyes, "Why do you run away when people need you most?" Like the pain kept her quiet, she couldn’t say anything else. Irma was still screaming, but she wasn’t the only one to feel that way. "Since you were born you have brought nothing but misfortunes into my life," he shouted o
It was a rainy morning. Giovanna was standing at the window of the hotel where he had stayed the day before. As bad as she might be feeling, she knew she needed to be strong and face reality. She was alone, without a husband and without the only family I had. Gina was leaving. As she dressed to go to her sister’s funeral, she imagined meeting Antony at the cemetery. Giovanna had already imagined the scene in her mind. He would surprise her in front of the coffin, pretend he didn’t care, hug Irma, and leave. He could even feel the contempt running through his veins. But deep down, she didn’t believe he would go there. Antony never cared about anything that involved her life during those three long years of marriage, certainly wouldn’t care now.The cemetery gates were open. She ran her eyes through half a dozen parked vehicles, looking for Antony’s car, and was breathless when she did not see him.Antony was not there. He thought of the years of suffering he had spent beside him, and t
Dropping her cell phone on the sofa seat and throwing her head back, Giovana could hardly believe what she will read in the newspapers. Her face was stamped on various social media profiles as the former wife of billionaire Antony. Many of them gestured a betrayal on her part. That made Giovana’s blood boil.It had been a week since the divorce that she had snuck into the house that Nicholas had given her and had not left for almost anything. He still felt the pain of losing Nicholas and Gina. It was like a knife stabbed in his chest, which hurt, but did not bleed. The cabinets were full of food. Xavier had delivered him a clean, organized, and stocked house for at least two months. Giovana certainly wouldn’t have much to worry about, but his peace had ended that morning.Your reputation was at stake. In addition to the news that she was a traitor, Irma’s own testimony was still circulating on the Internet, accusing her of murdering Gina herself. He picked up the phone again and calle
Antony“Do you have any news from Giovana?” Antony directed his words to the housekeeper, always in an authoritative tone.“No, sir,” she lowered her head, “since she left, we haven’t spoken again.”“I hope you’re not lying to me, Tania,” he communicated with a sharp look and a dry tone of voice. “I won’t hesitate to fire you.”Those words made the housekeeper tremble. She even tried to swear on her own mother that she was telling the truth, but with an arrogance she had rarely seen in anyone, she was left behind, talking to herself. This made the mad panic.Antony locked himself in his office. His head ached every time he thought about the problems Giovana had been causing him since their separation. He never imagined that Nicolau could offer her fifty percent of the company’s shares and make it public only after he had already signed the divorce. It was as if Nicolau predicted Antony’s moves. As if he already knew that after his death, Antony would abandon Giovana.Antony didn’t hat
Matteo said something and Giovana smiled - the words got lost in the noise. In the background, over her shoulders, only a few people could be seen walking along the sidewalks. Matteo’s presence brought so much peace that Giovana had even forgotten she was pregnant.Damn, I’m pregnant! She remembered. This fact almost ruined everything else.“What did you say?” She really hadn’t heard his words.“If you’d like me to accompany you home.”It seemed like an irresistible offer to Giovana, but too risky.“I don’t want to seem intrusive,” he smiled, “but I really want to be kind and make sure you get home safely.”Was that real? Giovana wondered. Who would encounter such a handsome and romantic man wandering the streets? Matteo was surely married, and Giovana was running away from problems.“I appreciate your concern, Matteo,” she sighed, “but it’s not necessary.”She carefully assessed Matteo and noticed he wasn’t wearing a wedding ring.“Okay,” maybe he realized she was looking at his hand
“Schedule a meeting with Giovanna.”Antony ordered the secretary. Valeria was wearing a gray suit that made the color of her lipstick contrast. The woman furrowed her brow, confused and irritated by that request.“I didn’t understand, sir,” she pretended not to understand.“What part of ‘schedule a meeting with Giovanna’ didn’t you understand?” his dry tone embarrassed, the woman.“What I didn’t understand is how I’m supposed to find her, sir.” She cleared her throat, lowering her gaze. She could not look into Antony’s eyes for too long. “I don’t understand what your ex-wife has to do with the company.”“You’re not paid to understand my decisions; you just need to obey them.” he stood up and handed her a card. “Call Xavier and schedule the meeting with him. Xavier knows where to find Giovanna.”Valeria held the card, confused and at the same time furious. Anyone who looked at her and analyzed her behavior in front of Antony would immediately notice that the secretary was in love with
Giovana woke up to the insistent vibration of her cellphone on the bedside table. It was already the third time the call had been ignored. When she finally decided to answer, she immediately regretted it when she heard what Xavier had to say.“Tell Antony to go to hell.”It was clear that his insults were not directed at Xavier, but when she cut off the call, she also offended him.How rude of her.She got up, feeling that her day wouldn’t be the best. She was extremely irritated by Antony’s insistence on seeing her. When they were married, Oliver rarely spoke to her. He always kept his distance and remained unattainable. Now that she was finally free from him, he relentlessly pursued her.But Giovana knew this moment would come. The reunion with Antony had to happen. She just wanted some time to prepare herself. She filled a cup with coffee when her cellphone vibrated again. Furthermore, she groaned in disappointment. She thought it would be Xavier again, with Antony’s requests, and
Nicolau got discharged a few weeks later. When Antony saw Giovana holding their son for the first time, he felt so many things that he couldn’t decipher the feeling that pulsed the strongest in his heart. As Giovana approached with a genuine smile on her face, she asked him if he wanted to hold their son for the first time. Nicolau was so small that Antony was afraid of hurting him. He looked at the baby, who was sleeping peacefully in his mother’s arms, and with an affectionate look, he replied yes.Holding his son for the first time made Antony understand the true meaning of love. Ricardo himself, took without him noticing, a photo who imagined that photograph hanging on their wall.On the other side of the room, Tania was packing things for Giovana’s departure, her eyes filled with tears.“I think I haven’t forgotten anything,” she quickly scanned the room, looking for anything that might have been left behind, but there was nothing.Tania soon realized it was time to tell Giovana
Antony got into the car next to Xavier and was driven to the company. When he found the memories of that place almost paralyzed him. He barely remembered the last time he had been there. He had aspired to own that empire even when Nicolau was alive. His eyes would sparkle at the thought of owning it all. Now, standing in front of everything he had achieved, none of it made sense anymore. In the end, the greatest wealth he had received was marrying Giovana. He entered the elevator alone. Xavier had left with the mission of buying the shares and returning them to Antony. And to think it was because of those shares that he married Giovana for the second time. Now his life revolved around her. A smile tugged at his lips as Antony came to this realization. At that moment, he found himself completely in love with his wife, despite his promise never to fall in love with another woman besides Roberta. When he stepped out of the elevator, the first face he saw was Valeria’s. The woman looked a
Antony had a fixed idea in his head and thought about it every time he looked at Giovana. He had spent that night by her side, holding her hand while she slept. She was eager to see Nicolau, but the doctors recommended that she wait for the anesthesia to wear off before getting up. The next day, when Antony woke up, she was sitting up, which startled him and made him rush to help her.“What are you doing?” He looked at her, scared that she might do something reckless.“I want to see our son,” she said, already putting on her sandals, indicating that no one would stop her.Antony threw his head back, closing his eyes tightly and sighing in disagreement, but when he looked at her and saw a deep sadness for not having met their son yet, he relented.“All right,” he said, taking her hands and helping her to walk, “let’s go meet Nicolau, and on the way, we’ll talk about something very important.”“What do you want to talk about?” She looked at him, furrowing her brow with concern.“I need
Antony stopped to think about what Andreas was saying. Things in his life were starting to calm down, and he needed to recognize that Andreas had made a considerable effort to help him. On the other hand, Andreas fell silent, embarrassed, as if he had made significant mistakes and was convinced that Antony would never forgive him. Only after a long period of silence, in an attempt to clear up the misunderstanding, did Andreas apologize.“I should have told you that I didn’t find Giovana when I arrived at the farm,” Andreas’ regretful tone was more than enough for Antony to understand that the boy was not at all happy with what had happened. “I promised you that I would take care of Giovana, and I didn’t want to fail again.”Antony laughed with disdain, as if he had heard a very tasteless joke.“Yes, you should have told me,” he replied calmly, looking away at the nursery in front of him, “but you need to stop always trying to please me. Why is my approval so important to you?”Andreas
Antony stared at Xavier with an apprehensive look. The lawyer was terrified until the call was ended. When he finally hung up the phone, he looked at Antony with a lump in his throat.“What happened?” Antony sweated, anxious to hear good news from Giovana. It was all he could think of. It was about Giovana’s safety, as if nothing else mattered. Before Xavier could think of opening his lips to tell him what was happening, his cell phone rang again. He looked confused at the phone number, realizing it was Andreas. He answered the call, hearing the boy asking to speak to Antony on the other end of the line.Xavier left, leaving Antony apprehensive behind. It took him a long time to make that decision. Would it be more appropriate to inform Antony about his freedom first than to let Andreas take up his time?He came back with the phone in his hands and handed it to Antony. He saw the man’s face slowly transform, and minutes later, he felt drawn to the most important news of his existence.
Irma slowly opened her eyes and heard voices coming from afar, as if in a dream. The trees seemed to be in constant motion, making her head spin faster. The same man she had seen in front of the farm was the one who came to her aid. Although dizzy and disoriented, Irma tried to get up and escape. Her efforts were in vain, as she was weak and injured. The man held her and called the police. When the police cars arrived, she mocked the officers. She laughed uncontrollably.“Do you not know that I am Giovana’s mother?” Her disoriented look frightened some. “I came to visit her. Don’t I have that right?”“She ran away when I called her,” the man accused. “She ran through the woods and fell, hitting her head. Forgive me, but Mr. Andreas asked me to watch over the farm and forbid this woman from approaching.”The police seemed confused by the situation. One of them approached Irma, touching her arm, which greatly irritated her.“You need to come with us.”The order did not sit well with her
Giovana could no longer stand the car shaking all the time. She closed her eyes tightly and believed that the pain in her abdomen was because of the long hours of travel. Tania remained by her side, never letting go of Giovana’s hand for a moment, and although she told the maid that she was okay, Tania could see from Giovana’s face how much she was suffering from the long delay.“We need to stop,” Tania said, noticing Giovana’s face changing color. “Giovana won’t be able to endure this much longer.”“We can’t stop now, Tania, it’s only a few more hours,” Maria declared.“You’ve been saying that for two days now,” she snapped, though she had no reason to.“Please, Tania, don’t argue with Maria because of me. I’ve already said that I’m fine.”Giovana held back from grimacing as the car went over a pothole, throwing her body forward. The pain was increasing as the minutes passed. Giovana remembered the moment when Antony was taken by the police and his words, begging Giovana to leave the
Antony was in a room, being watched by police officers. In front of him, Xavier kept talking only about subjects that wouldn’t raise any suspicion. The lawyer already knew about the evidence against Irma and was preparing to put his plan into action.“Ask Andreas to go to Giovana,” he said, looking at the mirrored wall, imagining the figure of the delegate looking at him behind the glass. “Keep her safe.”“Andreas has already gone to the farm,” he said, wiping the sweat from his face. “I’ll get him out of jail today, Antony. I propose we put an end to this injustice once and for all.”Xavier was in a hurry, although Antony insisted on knowing who had been responsible for discovering his location. Xavier had no idea who it had been. He left the interrogation room, demanding to speak to the delegate. The man was arrogant, thinking he deserved a prize for arresting a fugitive from the police, which Xavier certainly disagreed with. He placed the paid bail on his desk, which made the man j
Someone called Irma that morning and informed her that Antony had been found. The voice on the other end of the line asked her to turn on the TV as Giovana’s location would be revealed. She paced anxiously around the house, waiting for the moment to put her plan into action. Her soul would only find peace once Giovana was dead. When she entered the living room, the TV was broadcasting Antony’s arrest live. She stopped and looked at the small screen, seeing Giovana’s face. Her eyes sparkled with emotion. She had finally found her daughter Gina’s killer.A sudden sense of unease surged in her heart as she hurried to pack her bags and leave. She saw Gina pass by the hallway, sending a shiver down her spine. Gina's constant visions and appearances tormented Irma. Surely her mind’s delusions, but she believed Gina’s spirit would only find peace when Giovana finally paid with her life for the crime she had committed.“I will draw her blood and bring it to you,” she said to the empty walls,
