Two days ago, Nicholas, Antony’s father, was buried with honors from a good man. Nicholas was the man who saved Giovanna from Irma’s evils when she was still a teenager. This was a story that Giovanna could not explain properly, because he found too much irony of fate or luck, but he knew that before his father died, he made Nicholas promise that he would take care of her and give his life to save her from the evils of her own mother. And that’s what he did in memory and respect for his best friend. He sponsored Giovanna, put her to study in one of the best colleges, and gave her peace and dignity. But the big surprise would come later. Nicholas made an unusual request to Giovanna, who, out of gratitude, could not refuse.

“Marry my son Antony,” he said.

At the time, Giovanna barely knew Antony, only by photos or stories that Nicholas himself told about him. Antony had lived in the United States for more than five years. He studied engineering at one of the best colleges in the country, but if there was one thing that Giovanna knew well about the boy, it was that he was of an incalculable coldness and an endless pride.

Nicholas had saved Giovanna, so that in the end, Giovanna would save his son. The purpose of this arranged marriage was only this, and Giovanna did not refuse the request. He married a man who also did not want to marry her.

It had everything to go wrong. Antony knew that to be the sole heir to Nicholas’s fortune, he would have to accept the deal. And there they were, two years later, ready to end it all.

“Antony will file for divorce as soon as the will is read,” Tania, the housekeeper, who was Giovanna’s closest in the mansion, warned her as soon as she stepped into the house, “Be prepared, my dear. Antony will go to great lengths to get rid of you.”

But Giovanna had been preparing for this moment for a long time. Since Nicholas had become ill, she knew that the day of divorce was approaching. This was not the first time he would talk about it with her. At least the few times they talked, he made it clear how much he despised her. There was no more reason for them to be together. The only reason that brought them together was dead: Nicholas.

“Don’t worry about me,” she said to the maid. “Maybe it’s even better that way.”

“You can lose everything and leave this marriage with absolutely nothing.”

“I did not marry Antony for money”, he looked away to the corridor that gave access to the office, “so, none of this will be missed”.

She hurried down the hall, stopping right in front of Antony’s office door. From the time she married him, she had only been there twice. Antony did not like to see her walking around the mansion, always blamed her for it. It always made her feel like she wasn’t part of her life and like none of it belonged to her. His body trembled, despite the heat that day. Giovanna took a deep breath, took courage, and entered the room.

Giovanna watched Antony’s expression in close as she crossed the door.

“Let’s get this over with,” Antony said, without looking into her eyes.

Giovanna wanted this to happen as soon as possible. As the lawyer read the will, her thoughts wandered to the hospital where Gina was, and prayed for her sister to resist until she returned.

“Do we agree, Miss Lens?” The lawyer’s high-pitched voice brought her back, but Giovanna had heard absolutely nothing that the man had said.

“Miss Lens doesn’t have to agree to anything,” took the papers from the lawyer’s hands and handed them over to Giovanna. “Just sign the divorce.”

Giovanna took a leap from the chair, getting as close to her husband as she had long since.

“You called me here to read the will?” she asked.

“What has just been done,” Antony fixed the suit, “Nicholas is gone and took with him this marriage. Have I not made it clear enough that I no longer want to be by your side?

“I knew that day would come,” his eyes fell on his, agitated.

“You don’t want to stay married to a man you hate,” Antony’s words sounded indifferent and showed no sign of concern. “Let’s get this over with, Giovanna.

But she didn’t hate him, even though she often said that. Having no idea what was going on in his mind, Giovanna considered agreeing, and even though she used to be obedient to all of Antony’s orders, though she disagreed from the bottom of her heart, that order she refused to obey.

“I need to go back to the hospital,” Antony looked into her eyes, freezing, and Giovanna may feel that something very bad was about to happen. “Can we leave the divorce for later?

She turned her back, a rare thing, and was already ready to leave when he held her by the arm hard and pulled her, making Giovanna cower in pain and fear.

“What do you want to hear? He shouted, mocked at Giovanna’s weakness, “Do you think I wouldn’t divorce you out of consideration for Nicholas?

These words hit her hard. Giovanna knew that contradicting him would make him furious, and she could see it in his dark, closed face.

“I don’t think anything, Antony, I… she shrank even more, when Antony finally let her go. “Gina’s not well, and she needs me now.”

“Giovanna, make no more excuses.” he frowned and again extended the role of divorce to her.

His tone made it clear that no negotiation was allowed.

Antony really had no idea that Gina was in critical condition at the hospital, expecting only a blood transfusion from Giovanna to be saved. He didn’t know, and he had no interest in knowing. Giovanna was aware that standing there gesturing with him would only waste more time, and Gina’s life was in danger.

As an act of desperation, Giovanna finally took the papers and signed the divorce.

All she wanted was to go back to the hospital and save her sister.

Antony watched her signature as Giovanna watched his reaction. His black eyes narrowed as if he were mocked by what he had just done.

“It wasn’t that hard,” those harsh words almost left her aimless, “Now get out of here.”

Giovanna was stunned. Before she could react, she saw Antony leave the office. Only then did she take her purse and leave soon after. He had no time to mourn or to regret what he had just done.

She hurried back to the building, where her sister was hospitalized. He looked at the clock, realizing that three hours had passed since she went to meet Antony. Was it too late?

The thoughts Gina couldn’t resist invaded her mind. As she walked back towards the room where Gina was, she realized that Irma was no longer there. The room was empty. He asked the nurse who made the bed, where the patient had been taken.

“I took Gina to the ICU,” she said.

Her heart exploded once again. Giovanna didn’t want her dead. She ran through the hospital corridors, as if looking for a way out. When she saw Irma in despair. She had her hands resting on her face and cried desperately.

“Where is Gina?” shook the woman in a reaction of despair, but Irma did not answer, just shouted.

“I’m sorry,” said the doctor who was by her side, but for some reason she hadn’t realized, “Gina just passed away.

The deafening silence was what tormented her right away. A silent nightmare.

Gina died.

It was all her fault.

Gina Died. These words seemed like the perfect remedy to drive Giovanna insane for good. She put both hands on her head and felt like it wasn’t real. A young girl, who had dreams, was gone. And it was all her fault and her inability to face her husband. If I had just been a little bit brave one more time, Gina would still be alive. The memories of two days ago, when he said goodbye to Nicholas, invaded his mind. The immeasurable pain, the loss of a man who had saved him, still destroyed his heart. Now they mingled with the pain of losing his sister. "What was so important that you couldn’t save Gina? Irma, now with the smudged makeup, held Giovanna’s blouse tightly, but the terror was in her eyes, "Why do you run away when people need you most?" It was a rainy morning. Giovanna was standing at the window of the hotel where he had stayed the day before. As bad as she might be feeling, she knew she needed to be strong and face reality. She was alone, without a husband and without the only family I had. Gina was leaving. As she dressed to go to her sister’s funeral, she imagined meeting Antony at the cemetery. Giovanna had already imagined the scene in her mind. He would surprise her in front of the coffin, pretend he didn’t care, hug Irma, and leave. He could even feel the contempt running through his veins. But deep down, she didn’t believe he would go there. Antony never cared about anything that involved her life during those three long years of marriage, certainly wouldn’t care now.The cemetery gates were open. She ran her eyes through half a dozen parked vehicles, looking for Antony’s car, and was breathless when she did not see him.Antony was not there. He thought of the years of suffering he had spent beside him, and t

Antony“Do you have any news from Giovana?” Antony directed his words to the housekeeper, always in an authoritative tone.“No, sir,” she lowered her head, “since she left, we haven’t spoken again.”“I hope you’re not lying to me, Tania,” he communicated with a sharp look and a dry tone of voice. “I won’t hesitate to fire you.”Those words made the housekeeper tremble. She even tried to swear on her own mother that she was telling the truth, but with an arrogance she had rarely seen in anyone, she was left behind, talking to herself. This made the mad panic.Antony locked himself in his office. His head ached every time he thought about the problems Giovana had been causing him since their separation. He never imagined that Nicolau could offer her fifty percent of the company’s shares and make it public only after he had already signed the divorce. It was as if Nicolau predicted Antony’s moves. As if he already knew that after his death, Antony would abandon Giovana.Antony didn’t hat

Matteo said something and Giovana smiled - the words got lost in the noise. In the background, over her shoulders, only a few people could be seen walking along the sidewalks. Matteo’s presence brought so much peace that Giovana had even forgotten she was pregnant.Damn, I’m pregnant! She remembered. This fact almost ruined everything else.“What did you say?” She really hadn’t heard his words.“If you’d like me to accompany you home.”It seemed like an irresistible offer to Giovana, but too risky.“I don’t want to seem intrusive,” he smiled, “but I really want to be kind and make sure you get home safely.”Was that real? Giovana wondered. Who would encounter such a handsome and romantic man wandering the streets? Matteo was surely married, and Giovana was running away from problems.“I appreciate your concern, Matteo,” she sighed, “but it’s not necessary.”She carefully assessed Matteo and noticed he wasn’t wearing a wedding ring.“Okay,” maybe he realized she was looking at his hand

“Schedule a meeting with Giovanna.”Antony ordered the secretary. Valeria was wearing a gray suit that made the color of her lipstick contrast. The woman furrowed her brow, confused and irritated by that request.“I didn’t understand, sir,” she pretended not to understand.“What part of ‘schedule a meeting with Giovanna’ didn’t you understand?” his dry tone embarrassed, the woman.“What I didn’t understand is how I’m supposed to find her, sir.” She cleared her throat, lowering her gaze. She could not look into Antony’s eyes for too long. “I don’t understand what your ex-wife has to do with the company.”“You’re not paid to understand my decisions; you just need to obey them.” he stood up and handed her a card. “Call Xavier and schedule the meeting with him. Xavier knows where to find Giovanna.”Valeria held the card, confused and at the same time furious. The ambiance’s aroma was still the same. The music playing in the background brought nostalgia with its musical notes, almost knocking Giovana out. Her body was tense, and her heart raced with each step she took towards the table. The blue veins on Giovana’s forehead throbbed. At that moment, she realized she still loved Antony, and worst of all, she missed him. With a bitter smile on her face, Giovana looked at Matteo, who pulled out a chair for her to sit. Soon, the restaurant manager appeared, smiling and happy to see Giovana again.“I’m very happy to see you again, ma’am,” he tried to be discreet, but failed miserably. “I thought I would never see you again after the divorce.”With that, she involuntarily glanced at Matteo’s bright eyes, knowing he could see the terror on her face. Matteo could read every subtle movement she made. Antony had a fixed idea in his head and thought about it every time he looked at Giovana. He had spent that night by her side, holding her hand while she slept. She was eager to see Nicolau, but the doctors recommended that she wait for the anesthesia to wear off before getting up. The next day, when Antony woke up, she was sitting up, which startled him and made him rush to help her.“What are you doing?” He looked at her, scared that she might do something reckless.“I want to see our son,” she said, already putting on her sandals, indicating that no one would stop her.Antony threw his head back, closing his eyes tightly and sighing in disagreement, but when he looked at her and saw a deep sadness for not having met their son yet, he relented.“All right,” he said, taking her hands and helping her to walk, “let’s go meet Nicolau, and on the way, we’ll talk about something very important.”“What do you want to talk about?” She looked at him, furrowing her brow with concern.“I need

On the other hand, Andreas fell silent, embarrassed, as if he had made significant mistakes and was convinced that Antony would never forgive him. Only after a long period of silence, in an attempt to clear up the misunderstanding, did Andreas apologize.“I should have told you that I didn’t find Giovana when I arrived at the farm,” Andreas’ regretful tone was more than enough for Antony to understand that the boy was not at all happy with what had happened. “I promised you that I would take care of Giovana, and I didn’t want to fail again.”Antony laughed with disdain, as if he had heard a very tasteless joke.“Yes, you should have told me,” he replied calmly, looking away at the nursery in front of him, “but you need to stop always trying to please me. Why is my approval so important to you?”Andreas

She laughed uncontrollably.“Do you not know that I am Giovana’s mother?” Her disoriented look frightened some. “I came to visit her. Don’t I have that right?”“She ran away when I called her,” the man accused. “She ran through the woods and fell, hitting her head. Forgive me, but Mr. Andreas asked me to watch over the farm and forbid this woman from approaching.”The police seemed confused by the situation. Antony was in a room, being watched by police officers. In front of him, Xavier kept talking only about subjects that wouldn’t raise any suspicion. The lawyer already knew about the evidence against Irma and was preparing to put his plan into action.“Ask Andreas to go to Giovana,” he said, looking at the mirrored wall, imagining the figure of the delegate looking at him behind the glass. “Keep her safe.”“Andreas has already gone to the farm,” he said, wiping the sweat from his face. “I’ll get him out of jail today, Antony. I propose we put an end to this injustice once and for all.”Xavier was in a hurry, although Antony insisted on knowing who had been responsible for discovering his location. Xavier had no idea who it had been.
