THIRTY-EIGHT

THE CHIMING of Brad's ringtone echoed in the dead quietness of his room. He groaned as he blindly reached for his phone in the darkness. With drowsy eyes, he checked the caller ID and it was Doris.

He wiped his eyes. Probably he was seeing things due to the haziness of his sight. He checked his phone again and it was still her name boldly written on his screen.

Then he checked the time and it was 1:56 am.

WHAT DOES THAT CRAZY HUMAN WANT BY THIS TIME?

He'd just managed to fall asleep after all the pile of work he'd had to go through. And now she wasn't even going to let him take a rest? Calling him in this ungodly hour?

He wanted nothing but to just hang up, switch off his phone, and flung it under his bed, but then again for her to be called by this time she must really need him. What if she was hurt or something?

Brad received the call. "Doris, what is it that you want by this time?" He spoke barely awake, his baritone going two notches deeper than usual.
