CHAPTER 68
Sunshine Cafe, New York.
"Nice to see you again, Alicia."
Nicholas was now walking with Alicia towards one of the tables in the corner of the cafe. They had made a prior appointment to meet again and discuss the case further.
And after they sat down, their eyes began to glance around.
Sunshine Cafe itself looked very cozy and relaxed with its light blue walls. The building itself has two floors, the first floor is for indoor enjoyment while the next floor is quite distinctive with its outdoor feel. It's perfect for visitors who want to experience the air and the view of the busy streets in the Town Square area itself.
But this time, Alicia and Nicholas chose to relax on the ground floor. A room filled with air-conditioning and several colorful paintings on each wall. Each table consisted of four chairs, which meant that the ground floor was reserved for guests who came with a lot of friends, or family.
"How was the case?" Alicia asked straight to the point.
Honestly, meeting Nicholas alone in a cafe like that reminded her of their failed first date earlier. And that suddenly made the Brooklyn girl feel very awkward.
"I was planning to go check Natalie Heele's personal data at a hospital, but suddenly, the wife of our second victim came and agreed to do an interview yesterday," Nicholas replied. "So, I asked Noel to replace me there."
"And the results?"
"Just like the articles that appeared on the internet, the nurse who had worked at the hospital was not Natalie Heele, but Rosie Heele," Nicholas said. He then spluttered. "But unfortunately, the hospital did not clearly disclose Rosie Heele's personal data. Noel can't see her photo or where she lives."
Alicia nodded in understanding. "That's a pity."
"But you see, there was something strange about Rich Greek's wife when we spoke yesterday," Nicholas said. The young detective's gaze was full of seriousness now. "She seemed to be hiding something that--"
"Excuse me." Suddenly, a waitress in a distinctive white and black uniform stood up to them. With a smile, she handed Nicholas and Alicia two menu books. "This is our menu for today. Are you going to order now?"
Alicia and Nicholas exchanged confused glances. But Nicholas hurriedly interrupted, "Ah, yes. I'll have a cappuccino and chocolate pudding instead." He then turned to the girl in front of him. "What about you, Alicia?"
"But we're not here to relax, Nic."
"Come on, order up. Don't let your stomach empty while you're on a case," Nicholas ordered. Then he turned back to the waitress who was still patiently standing near them. "I'd also like to order a steak."
"Well, how about you, miss?" the waitress explained, throwing the question to Alicia.
And feeling forced, Alicia had to agree to Nicholas' offer. "Well, I'd also like to order a steak and caramel ice."
Then the tall waitress with the thin mustache smiled warmly after taking down her guest's order. Taking the menu book politely, he asked Nicholas and Alicia to wait before he himself waltzed away.
"Aren't you bored of those caramels?" said Nicholas with an amused chuckle.
"I've loved caramels for a long time. So, you should stop worrying."
Nicholas smiled before continuing, "So, this woman named Veronica--"
"Veronica?" interrupted Alicia curiously.
"Yes. Rich Greek's wife Veronica Smith came to the office with a sad face. Even just by looking at her face, we could tell that she was very lost after the death of her husband," Nicholas explained. He then frowned afterwards. "But when I asked her if she knew Natalie Heele, her behavior and expression suddenly changed. It was like she was scared, upset, or something I can't quite put my finger on."
"So you think they know each other?"
Nicholas immediately nodded his head and crossed his arms over his chest. "The plan is that I will visit their residence to check some things today. Can you come with me?"
That made Alicia feel bad again. Her decision to help Nicholas with this case certainly led to more interaction with the handsome young detective. And Alicia was getting worried now.
The further she went with Nicholas, the more her feelings for Ace seemed to be tossed about on the high seas.
"Alicia?"
"Ah, yes, yes. How was it?" The girl had just woken up from her reverie.
But Nicholas laughed when he saw Alicia's behavior. "What's wrong with you, Alicia? Is there something on your mind?"
And hurriedly the blue-eyed girl brushed it off. "Oh, no. I'm fine. Just a little hungry," she excused herself.
"Well, we'll have a bite to eat before we go deeper into the case." Nicholas then smiled mischievously. "I don't want to bring a partner who will be a bother to me."
Alicia naturally rolled her eyes lazily. But suddenly, she remembered one thing. She looked around and realized something. "Nic, there are a lot of surveillance cameras here," Alicia said.
Which made Nicholas immediately turn around and join her in looking at the ceiling of the room. There were four cameras in every corner. "Want to check the surveillance cameras now?"
Then the waitress who had taken their order returned with a tray of food. She smiled as she placed each item on the table. "Please," she said politely.
"Ah, sorry." Nicholas then showed his police identity to the man. "Can we check the surveillance camera data from a few days ago?"
"I see." The waiter seemed a little surprised to learn that his two visitors were part of the police force. "But I think I need to ask my manager for permission first."
"Go ahead," Nicholas said in agreement. "Tell him I'll check the surveillance camera data when the massacre at the Town Square center took place."
"Yes, detective."
The waitress then left, leaving Nicholas and Alicia.
"Please eat, Alicia," Nicholas said gently. "Just relax when you're with me."
"I know he's here," Alicia said suddenly.
Hearing an answer that was not synchronized with Nicholas' words just now, suddenly made the twenty-five-year-old detective frown deeply. "What?"
"I know Rich Greek is sitting in the same place as us," Alicia said in a mysterious tone. "This is the perfect position for the perfectionist Rich."
"I don't understand. But... yes, maybe you're right." Nicholas scratched the nape of his neck, which was not itchy at all. "I heard that Rich likes to sit in a strategic place and look in all directions. But I didn't know that you were so concerned about that, Alicia." She shrugged her shoulders quickly. "So, how did you know that?"
Alicia looked up, giving Nicholas a serious look. "We'll find out everything soon after looking at the data from the surveillance camera in the air corner of this room." []
CHAPTER 69Sunshine Cafe, New York.Nicholas' forehead couldn't stop wrinkling in surprise as his eyes clearly saw scene after scene appearing on the monitor in the Sunshine Cafe manager's room right now.The cafe manager, Mrs. Donn, had finally agreed to the detective's request to view the CCTV footage in order to be considered as a cooperative citizen in assisting the investigation into the death of one of her patrons on the day of the Town Square massacre a few days back.Mr. Donn also explained to Nicholas that the man named Rich Greek came alone before his five colleagues followed and sat with him. He also added that all the food and drinks they ordered were checked for quality before being served on the table."Do you still remember what food or drinks they ordered that day?" asked Nicholas.Mr. Donn quickly nodded his head. "Mr. Greek's secretary ordered the same food for them. Salmon pasta and americanos.""They had a pasta with a cup of coffee?" Nicholas stared at Mr. Donn in
CHAPTER 70Greek's House, New York."Why are you two only here by the way?"Nicholas and Alicia were immediately invited to sit with the owner of the house in her living room with a cup of hot tea and gingerbread cookies as a treat. They didn't do much for a few minutes, other than watching Veronica sip her tea which was still occasionally puffing hot steam from its surface repeatedly. Both of their eyes were also presented with an incredibly luxurious view once they entered and sat there. The polished white walls seemed to match the expensive furniture around them. There's no denying that the spacious living room is one of the most luxurious with expensive electronics and other displays of high artistic value. One of them, an original painting of Les Femmes D'Alger by Pablo Picasso, was sold at Christie's New York auction house for five hundred million dollars last year. Veronica can even own it easily. Not to mention, the gilded urns that are neatly lined up with several award certi
CHAPTER 71Greek's house, New York."I did hate him, but that doesn't mean I killed him."Veronica clearly did not accept it when a secretary accused her of being the mastermind of her own husband's death. It made no sense to her.But Rose also repeatedly said that she received threatening messages sent by Veronica. She could even prove her point with successive messages asking her to poison Mr. Rich Greek or else her life would suffer."But these messages were sent through your cell phone, Madam," Nicholas snapped."I've told you several times, I never sent him such messages," Veronica screeched. She was now sitting on the sofa with her two bodyguards at the back, while Nicholas interrogated her.The broad-shouldered detective had also contacted Noel and asked him to come immediately with a police officer from his team to arrest the two women."Didn't all the property and inheritance rights go to you after your husband's death?" Nicholas asked suspiciously. His eyes also scrutinized
CHAPTER 72Golden University, New York.Alicia was waiting for Brittany in the main corridor of the campus in her knee-length floral dress. The dark-haired girl had been standing behind the bulletin board for the past five minutes because she was going to the movies with Brittany today."Holaaa, Alicia," Brittany greeted happily. The chubby-cheeked girl was wearing a red off-shoulder blouse and a black knee-length skirt paired with dark ankle boots. She also immediately embraced Alicia, who was now on the same level as her because Alicia was not wearing her usual high-heeled shoes. "I look better when you wear those flat shoes, Alicia," he said.Which made Alicia smile slightly. "Are we leaving now?""Oh, sure," she replied quickly. Brittany also handed Alicia a gold-colored ticket. "A special ticket for my best friend."Alicia just snorted in amusement and nodded her head. "Thank you, Brittany."Afterwards, Alicia and Brittany headed to the theater in Town Square, New York. Brittany
CHAPTER 73Alicia's flat, New York."You should at least eat something to keep from getting sick, Alicia."Another long sigh ended Brittany's words, which Alicia took for granted. The girl remained silent, curled up under her blanket and staring at the large window in front of her with a sad look. The blue irises no longer glowed. Only sadness and deep sorrow emanated from her dim eyes. Her eyes that were puffy from not being able to stop crying also made her state look alarming."It's been three days since you've been silent like this. You know, you're starting to worry me, Alicia," Brittany said again. She then placed a bowl of homemade carrot soup on the nightstand. "I told Ace and he's going back to New York today."Alicia furrowed her brow and turned around. "You told him?"And the blonde haired girl just shrugged her shoulders indifferently. "I can't keep seeing you like this." Brittany's brown eyes glanced briefly at the soup bowl on the nightstand before returning to Alicia. "
CHAPTER 74Town Square, New York."Mrs. Portman can't be pregnant!"Alicia's scream seems to have attracted quite a bit of attention, as several people passing by the Town Square theater turned to her with curious looks.Nicholas was no different. The handsome detective, who was wearing a denim shirt and chinos, exhaled in exasperation. "The forensic doctor has performed an autopsy and the victim was found to be two months pregnant," he informed."But... Mrs. Portman never looked like a pregnant woman," Alicia argued incredulously. "She couldn't have been pregnant, Nic."Feeling tired of explaining, Nicholas finally preferred to show Mrs. Portman's autopsy results to the dark-haired girl. "You can check it yourself."And just as quickly, Alicia grabbed the sheet of paper from the young detective. On the paper were Mrs. Portman's photograph and the forensic results stating that the victim was one hundred percent positive for pregnancy. That immediately made Alicia's head spin violently
CHAPTER 75New York City police station."I told you that I know nothing!"Nicholas was forced to hear that sentence repeatedly from Mrs. Veronica's mouth during his second investigation. The woman with the distinctive characteristic of rolling her hair back was still arguing and reluctant to admit her closeness to the first victim--Natalie Heele. Her attitude, which is considered uncooperative and seems haughty, really makes Nicholas have to hold his nerves. If there were no ethics and manners in this world, he could have immediately doused the arrogant woman sitting in front of him with the hot coffee that Noel had kept on his desk earlier."I will repeat this question for the last time and this time...," Nicholas gave the woman a sharp look. "Answer my question honestly!" Mrs. Veronica visibly snorted in annoyance at the threat, before she finally chose to turn her face away from Nicholas. Avoiding the intimidating gaze the detective was giving her. "Do you know a woman named Natal
CHAPTER 76Public cemetery, New York City."Your face looks as gloomy as the sky this afternoon."The voice came as Alicia was standing in front of someone's funeral. Marble Cemetery, a public cemetery in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York, was chosen as the final resting place for a woman named Karenina Portman. That woman, not only managed to become Alicia's favorite lecturer. But far from that, the woman who was more familiarly called Mrs. Portman by her students had made a deep impression on Alicia. Just like losing a sister, Alicia couldn't control her feelings of loss now.Alicia then exhaled heavily before crossing her arms over her chest. "If only I had realized right away that something was wrong with her, maybe she wouldn't have ended up here now," she said guiltily. But Ace immediately put his arm around her. Letting the dark-haired girl slide under his muscular arms. "You still won't change fate even if you catch up with her."Again Alicia could only sigh
CHAPTER 275 Nicholas drove the car as fast as he could. He cut through the streets knowing that Alicia was in danger and needed to be rescued immediately. At this moment, Nicholas deliberately did not turn on the siren in his car to avoid things that threatened Alicia. Arriving at Alicia's house, Nicholas could see a suspicious car near Rick and his mother's house. Nicholas' eyebrows furrowed and he slowed down the car. While looking around, Nicholas tried to think of a plan. Until finally, Nicholas stopped his car right behind the suspicious car. Nicholas got out of the car, but his gaze remained wary. He took out his gun and pointed it downwards as he walked into Alicia's yard. He realized that Alicia's door was unlocked even though the lights were off. Just as Nicholas entered Alicia's house, a punch landed from behind. But Nicholas was strong enough to withstand it, so the man immediately turned around and pointed the gun at Ace. But Ace was also ready to shoot Nicholas in the
CHAPTER 274Nicholas observed the change in Selena's expression from a different room. She stood up and hugged herself while frowning."She keeps bringing up Glen. It's starting to worry me," Nicholas muttered. While on the other side, Noel began to open the folder given by Nicholas. There were several sheets of paper inside. They were reports done by Peter and that surprised Noel. He peered into the folder."I didn't know Nicholas would give me this much work." Noel's complaint was heard by Nicholas in a different room, but Nicholas ignored it and chose to focus on Selena. Noel looked at Selena then smiled and put the papers on the table. "I don't want to read all the writing on this paper. So, what can you give me to get me to get you out of prison?""I... I didn't kill anyone."Noel waved her hands in the air, she seemed to look down on the opponent. "That's a very standard thing. Do you have any evidence? Everyone in that base camp is dead, none of them can give you testimony. So
CHAPTER 273Glen looked up, he hadn't finished his fries yet. "Are you leaving now, Uncle? Are you going to see my mom?"Nicholas mumbled for a while, before finally nodding his head. "I'm going to take care of some work and meet with your mother. Is there anything you want to say to her?"Glen's face grew more enthusiastic as he finished the fries in his mouth and looked thoughtful. He looked around before finally seeing Nicholas again. Raising his index finger in the air, Glen said, "I want you to tell my mom that I miss her a lot. I want some chocolate candy from Uncle Chuck's shop! They have the best chocolate in town and I want to try it."Now, it was Nicholas' turn to raise his eyebrows enthusiastically. "Do you know Uncle Chuck's?""My friends in class talk about it, but I don't know. I just heard about it and wanted to try the chocolate candies they have."Nicholas nodded his head. He smiled widely and rubbed the top of Glen's head in relief. At least, the boy still had some e
CHAPTER 272Nicholas dropped Alicia off in front of Alpha Company's office, while he continued on his way to the daycare. He got out of his car, with a bag of fries from Mcd. Nicholas walked in and was met by Lim Sara.Lim Sara, who was working, greeted Nicholas politely. "Good morning, Detective. Have you come to pick up Glen?"A small mumble was heard from Nicholas. He finally explained the situation to Sara. "Um, well, the police still have to check a few things from Mrs. Selena. It may take some time, can Glen stay here a little longer?"Lim Sara looked worried. The woman with her beautiful hair coils mumbled, before nodding and replying, "Of course, Detective. But it seems like Glen is worried about his mother, he's asked about her several times and I can only say that she's at work." Sara turned around, then showed Glen who was sitting alone in the corner of the study room. "Because he stays here alone, without the other children, he thinks that his mother is angry.""Has Glen e
CHAPTER 271Alicia leaned on Nicholas' shoulder, she let the blanket cover their bodies on the sofa. After a night of sleeping together, Alicia woke up first. She took a deep breath and woke Nicholas up."Nick?"While shaking Nicholas' hand, Alicia tried to get her lover to wake up. And after a while, Nicholas did wake up."Um, good morning, Alicia." Nicholas adjusted his sitting position, he then blinked his eyes and began to speak. "How did you sleep last night?"Alicia mumbled. Letting go of the blanket covering her body, she hugged herself. "I got a good sleep because of you. But can't you just relax like this? You said you were going to check on Selena again today?""Yes, there will be a cross-examination. Noel will try to provoke her with psychological techniques," Nicholas said. He looked ahead, then moistened his dry lips. "I wonder to what extent Selena knows information about Ace. If Selena can tell the police about the steps Ace is taking, it would be great for all of us."
CHAPTER 270Nicholas put on an apron, before grabbing a cutting board and knife. He took out the onions, garlic and chili peppers. Skillfully, Nicholas began to chop the ingredients into small pieces, and then he heated the oil in the wok. He prepared to put in all the ingredients, and after the smell of onions was there, Nicholas put in the minced meat that he took from the refrigerator. His big hands started moving here and there quickly. He was like a professional chef. Sautéing, putting in spices and making everything better.Besides cooking the meat, Nicholas also prepared two loaves of bread on a plate. He placed the meat onto the bread, then garnished it with lettuce, tomato and some sauce on top.Nicholas patted his palms when he was done. He took off the apron, put it back on the table and started to prepare the two plates of food for the dining table. It was raining outside, and Alicia was still covering herself with a blanket on the sofa.It looked like Alicia was completel
CHAPTER 269Knock! Knock! Knock!Alicia opened her eyes after hearing a knock on the door. She tried to blink her eyes, then got up from her bed. She walked with her weak body to the door. The transparent door showed Nicholas outside, so Alicia didn't have to worry about opening the door. The girl opened the door and Nicholas greeted her enthusiastically. "Hey, Alicia. Why... what's wrong with you? Your face looks pale."Nicholas pressed the back of his hand to his forehead, checking Alicia's body temperature manually. He felt an unusual heat. There was something strange and Nicholas looked at Alicia worriedly."You have a fever, Alicia." Nicholas put his arm around Alicia and carried her into the house. Nicholas closed the door behind him and gently pushed Alicia into the living room. Nicholas helped Alicia to sit down. "Have you had a fever since morning?"Alicia nodded her head. "I... went to see Anna at her house.""Did you manage to meet Anna?""She... was close to my mother, Nic
CHAPTER 268"I may be ignorant of thethe law, I've run afoul of the constitution and statutes, but I know you'll remain a fugitive as long as you live in this world.a fugitive as long as you live in this world."Ace furrowed his browdeeply. "I'll have to think about it."The Fixer picked up the bagwith the money and held it in his lap like the baby he loved. While picking upseveral stacks of money and smelling the odor, The Fixer continued, "If you'dagree to my game, you can come the day before you're due to leave forEngland. Oh, and take Alicia with you. She has to 'die' with you too, right?"They exchanged glances fora few moments, before Ace finally turned around and left The Fixer's hiddenThe Fixer's hidden warehouse. He handed over the one million dollars he gotfrom stealing Amanda, Jill and Jason's money in order to escape farther than New York.than New York. But faking death? Ace hasn't thought of thatbefore.Meanwhile, insidehis base camp, The Fixer was feeling go
CHAPTER 267CHAPTER 267Ace put on his black gloves before he got into the car. His brown eyes looked ahead, while both hands held the steering wheel. The engine hadn't been turned on yet, so the road ahead was very dark. Ace managed to hide the car in a narrow alley that only fit Ace's car. Even then, Ace had to work hard to get it out carefully. After the chase that almost got him caught by Nicholas, Ace felt even more threatened. The streets of New York City were lined with his face. He was the most wanted fugitive in New York City. Even billboards that used to display commercial advertisements or important notices were now replaced with his face. Everyone was looking for Ace Blake."Damn. Where am I going to go now? I can't go without Alicia, but taking her without a plan won't do me any favors either."After thinking for a while, Ace finally started the engine of his car. He positioned the car so that it could exit the narrow alley. The car blended into the crowded street, but Ac
