CHAPTER 73
Alicia's flat, New York.
"You should at least eat something to keep from getting sick, Alicia."
Another long sigh ended Brittany's words, which Alicia took for granted. The girl remained silent, curled up under her blanket and staring at the large window in front of her with a sad look. The blue irises no longer glowed. Only sadness and deep sorrow emanated from her dim eyes. Her eyes that were puffy from not being able to stop crying also made her state look alarming.
"It's been three days since you've been silent like this. You know, you're starting to worry me, Alicia," Brittany said again. She then placed a bowl of homemade carrot soup on the nightstand. "I told Ace and he's going back to New York today."
Alicia furrowed her brow and turned around. "You told him?"
And the blonde haired girl just shrugged her shoulders indifferently. "I can't keep seeing you like this." Brittany's brown eyes glanced briefly at the soup bowl on the nightstand before returning to Alicia. "You haven't eaten for three days, Alicia. You'll get sick if you keep torturing yourself like this."
Instead, Alicia turned around and looked out the window again. Seemingly ignorant of the news Brittany had just delivered. "I can't let her go, Britt."
"Nicholas will handle the case and we'll bring the culprit to justice soon," Brittany clarified. "You trust him, don't you?"
"But Mrs. Portman...," Alicia bit her lip, holding back the tears that were once again pushing their way out. "She's like family to me."
Brittany could only exhale heavily before crawling up the bed to Alicia. She sat there, even though Alicia seemed to have no intention of stopping to look at her. "We can't change fate, Alicia. Everyone dies in due time and when that time comes, we just have to let it go." then Alicia turned around, looking at her with a sad look. "Don't push yourself anymore, Alicia."
The clear liquid from Alicia's eyes, which she had been damming up, now flowed quickly as her body rose and her hands immediately clasped Brittany tightly. And vice versa, Brittany also embraced her best friend more deeply as Alicia's sobs sounded increasingly pained.
"It's going to be okay, Alicia," Brittany said soothingly.
Then Alicia stopped crying. Her body was still shaking, but she finally broke the embrace and looked straight into her best friend's brown eyes. "I'll find the culprit," she said determinedly.
"But that means--"
"You said Nicholas is on the case, didn't you?" interrupted Alicia excitedly. "It means it will be easier for me to get into the investigation and find the culprit."
"Alicia, but I don't think that's a good idea," Brittany argued, trying to dissuade her best friend from getting back into criminal matters that might be dangerous for her.
But Alicia was adamant and determined. "Just keep this a secret from Ace and I'll find the culprit as soon as I can." She grasped Brittany's hand afterwards. "Trust me, Britt."
Feeling unable to do much more, the blonde haired girl could only nod in agreement and return Alicia's grateful hug.
"Thank you for helping me this far, Brittany."

Avril Lavigne's melodious voice accompanied Alicia's drizzly night. She looked at the large window in her room that had been covered with dew since earlier. She could clearly see that the sky was dark and looked as sad as she was.
She let out a long sigh and sat on the edge of the bed. The blue irises were indeed highlighting the scenery behind the window, but her mind was wandering somewhere else.
Until the sound of knocking outside brought her out of her reverie.
Who was visiting last night? Alicia thought.
But she kept moving towards the main door to find her own answer. With caution, she stepped closer to the still-knocking door. And in one short breath, she dared to pull the doorknob and open it.
"Alicia!" Before she could say anything, her guest had already rushed inside and hugged her. Ace was the one. And Alicia's eyes looked incredulous. "Are you okay, dear?"
"Ace?"
"I was so worried when I heard everything from Brittany." She clung to Alicia's body tighter now. Ace clearly sounded very, very worried for Alicia. "What's going on with you exactly?"
But Alicia chose to loosen the hug from her lover. She then rolled her eyes lazily and replied, "I'm fine, Ace."
It was clear that Alicia had lost her feelings for Ace lately, plus she was in a bad mood because of Mrs. Portman's departure. Now, Ace was back with his excessive behavior? Alicia certainly felt uncomfortable.
"I heard you haven't eaten anything for three days," Ace said with concern. He reached into his pants pocket and handed Alicia a box of European chocolates. "I brought these for you. So please... eat them."
Alicia looked at the box of chocolates for a few seconds, before guilt set in and weakened her heart. She quickly accepted the chocolate box with the white ribbon on it and smiled faintly at Ace. "I'm sorry that I didn't tell you," she said trying to sound sincere. "I... couldn't, just couldn't do it."
The tall man then gently rubbed Alicia's cheek. His dark brown irises looked at the girl before him sadly. "It's okay dear. I understand the situation." Alicia smiled back. It wasn't as warm as usual, but at least it was enough to make Ace feel relieved. "I'll stay over to see how you're doing tonight," she continued.
It took a while before Alicia finally agreed to Ace's offer. "Okay." After all, it was probably a good thing that Alicia had stopped for a moment to make her heart feel a little better.
She hadn't eaten yet, her mind was becoming very muddled and unfocused. Stopping for a while might make her refreshed for the next day.
Because tomorrow, she would be preparing to investigate the murder of Mrs. Portman, her favorite lecturer. []
CHAPTER 74Town Square, New York."Mrs. Portman can't be pregnant!"Alicia's scream seems to have attracted quite a bit of attention, as several people passing by the Town Square theater turned to her with curious looks.Nicholas was no different. The handsome detective, who was wearing a denim shirt and chinos, exhaled in exasperation. "The forensic doctor has performed an autopsy and the victim was found to be two months pregnant," he informed."But... Mrs. Portman never looked like a pregnant woman," Alicia argued incredulously. "She couldn't have been pregnant, Nic."Feeling tired of explaining, Nicholas finally preferred to show Mrs. Portman's autopsy results to the dark-haired girl. "You can check it yourself."And just as quickly, Alicia grabbed the sheet of paper from the young detective. On the paper were Mrs. Portman's photograph and the forensic results stating that the victim was one hundred percent positive for pregnancy. That immediately made Alicia's head spin violently
CHAPTER 75New York City police station."I told you that I know nothing!"Nicholas was forced to hear that sentence repeatedly from Mrs. Veronica's mouth during his second investigation. The woman with the distinctive characteristic of rolling her hair back was still arguing and reluctant to admit her closeness to the first victim--Natalie Heele. Her attitude, which is considered uncooperative and seems haughty, really makes Nicholas have to hold his nerves. If there were no ethics and manners in this world, he could have immediately doused the arrogant woman sitting in front of him with the hot coffee that Noel had kept on his desk earlier."I will repeat this question for the last time and this time...," Nicholas gave the woman a sharp look. "Answer my question honestly!" Mrs. Veronica visibly snorted in annoyance at the threat, before she finally chose to turn her face away from Nicholas. Avoiding the intimidating gaze the detective was giving her. "Do you know a woman named Natal
CHAPTER 76Public cemetery, New York City."Your face looks as gloomy as the sky this afternoon."The voice came as Alicia was standing in front of someone's funeral. Marble Cemetery, a public cemetery in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York, was chosen as the final resting place for a woman named Karenina Portman. That woman, not only managed to become Alicia's favorite lecturer. But far from that, the woman who was more familiarly called Mrs. Portman by her students had made a deep impression on Alicia. Just like losing a sister, Alicia couldn't control her feelings of loss now.Alicia then exhaled heavily before crossing her arms over her chest. "If only I had realized right away that something was wrong with her, maybe she wouldn't have ended up here now," she said guiltily. But Ace immediately put his arm around her. Letting the dark-haired girl slide under his muscular arms. "You still won't change fate even if you catch up with her."Again Alicia could only sigh
CHAPTER 77Golden University, New York."Milles said that she saw someone stalking Mrs. Portman that night."Alicia gulped and crossed her arms over her chest as soon as she heard Brittany's words. "So someone's been following her all this time," Alicia said. " His movements were well-planned."Brittany took a sip of her vanilla latte, which was still steaming hot, before continuing, "But who would dare follow her on campus? You know that our campus has high security, right?"Alicia gave a short mumble. Brittany was right, she thought. "Maybe he's using someone on campus." She then looked at Brittany; asking for approval. "Someone who can get in and out without being suspected. His face and fingerprints are also recognized on the security system.""Could it be the staff and faculty?" Brittany then shook her head in despair. "If so, there are a lot of possibilities. We have dozens of faculty and staff on campus that we can't possibly check individually, Alicia."And the dark-haired gir
CHAPTER 78New York City Police Department."Alicia closed her communication with me."Nicholas was sitting in his predominantly white room. There isn't much to see there, apart from a computer on the desk and a few completed reports next to it. As for personal data, the young detective keeps it in another drawer under lock and key."I don't think we can involve him in this case," Noel said, trying to make a suggestion. "She'll only hold us back, detective. Besides... she's in close contact with these people, her feelings or closeness to victims, witnesses, could affect the course of the investigation. You should decide to remove her from the case immediately.""I'm sure she wouldn't involve her feelings in a murder case," Nicholas argued. "We all know that she's not easily provoked, don't we?"Perhaps Nicholas was right. But Noel couldn't stop himself from commenting, "This time Ace might be involved and the girl might not be able to accept the truth." Noel then rubbed his shoulders.
CHAPTER 79Golden University, New York. The wind that had been blowing through the oak trees around the university's garden seats was now beginning to break through the pores of Alicia's skin. The fair-skinned girl had been sitting there alone since her last class ended about an hour ago. Her blue, dim eyes were just staring ahead, though her mind was nowhere to be seen. She took a deep breath and exhaled slowly as she closed her eyes. It had been a week since Mrs. Portman's passing from her life, but the grief was still there. So real. Her relationship with Mrs. Portman was quick. She was a caring, nurturing lecturer who helped her with many things that Alicia couldn't figure out on her own. In just a short time, Alicia became like a sister to Mrs. Portman. And the woman's death has a bit of a psychological effect on Alicia, who has lost many times. If only she hadn't died. That's what Alicia had always regretted, until now.As soon as she opened her eyes, Alicia was surprised by the
CHAPTER 80Amore restaurant, New York."I..."The young man's dark brown eyes suddenly flashed sharply. They pierced the blue eyes of Alicia who could not move in front of him."What have you and Nicholas done, Alicia?" repeated Ace. He even raised his voice this time. "You met again, didn't you?""I--it's not what you think, Ace," Alicia denied. The only thing on her mind now was how Ace knew everything. Could Brittany have had the heart to report him? Or Ace had just hired someone to watch her while she was traveling."Tell me everything, Alicia," Ace said urgently.A sharp look came from those brown irises. Once again, Alicia was rendered helpless even by his gaze. Ace seemed even colder with the attitude he was showing now. It took Alicia's tongue just to explain everything. There was silence again. Especially after Alicia bowed her head guiltily. Without even expecting it, trembling began to spread throughout her body. Alicia felt very guilty for Ace."I always trusted you, Alici
CHAPTER 81New York City police station."You'll be very surprised at what I've found on the internet, Detective." Noel said.Nicholas was busy on the computer when Noel said that. The American turned around, looking at Noel with a curious expression. He pointed to the chair opposite and said, "You can sit there and tell me, Noel. What did you find?"Noel sat down as Nicholas requested. And the blond-haired man immediately handed Nicholas a piece of paper containing information, an article from an internet site. "The woman named Angela Vasylchenko is a British councillor who has a long career in New York, she is fifty years old now and has been living abroad since her treatment in New York was deemed a failure."Noel's explanation made Nicholas frown. He paid close attention to Noel's every word. He's looked serious."So, what about her medical records?" asked Nicholas as he scrutinized the sheets of paper on the table, examining them one by one. "Why did her treatment in New York fai
