One Hundred and Thirty Seven

CHAPTER 137

"Stop this, Hailey!"

Louis hugged Hailey from behind to stop her from hurting herself. Hailey had been screaming like crazy since this morning, thrashing around in her house. Hailey started throwing things, screeching like a person losing their mind.

"What do you want?!"

Hailey cried as she screamed, calling out for her beloved son who was now in prison. She fell to her knees while pulling at her wavy blonde hair. Hailey had been acting strange since this morning and it made all her makeup disappear, her hair a mess, her lips pale.

"I want Kevin home, Louis!" Her voice was soft and sounded painful. She looked up, staring at her husband who stood with a tired face. "He shouldn't be treated like that. It was just an accident! Why does he have to go to jail?!"

"It's just a few months, Hailey, you have to be nice to make it easier for your son."

Hailey clucked. She seemed fed up with her husband's soothing words. She grabbed her husband's trousers and knelt down. "Please, use your money to free him! He needs us in there so badly!"

Louis snorted. "Enough, Hailey!"

"No, I'll stay at your feet until you do what I want. If you really love me, then... get Kevin out of jail."

Louis' body lowered, and he squatted in front of his wife. Hailey's face was already disheveled from crying all day. She lost the light of her face from acting like that. Her eyeballs were glaring like they were going to pop out of their place if Louis didn't tame them immediately.

"Please, Lou...,"

Louis looked into Hailey's eyes once again. Their gazes met, but this was the first time he found his wife acting 'crazy' just because she wanted to defend their son. It was their only son and Hailey relied on Kevin for everything. Kevin's intelligence and achievements in school, even in college... had made Hailey big-headed. Kevin managed to fulfill her ego and expectations as a parent.

"Where would I put my face if people knew Kevin was in trouble like this?!" Hailey's lips were trembling, she was holding back her tears from coming out hysterically. "I'm so embarrassed, Lou."

"Alright, alright." Louis finally gave up.

His original intention to teach Kevin a lesson had finally crumbled. His defenses were not that strong when he was dealing with his wife. Louis loved his family very much. But he forgot, to teach good and bad to his wife and children.

Both of Louis' hands held Hailey's cheeks. They stared at each other. There was a look of sadness and despair in Louis' eyes as he looked at his desperate wife. "I'm going to call someone who might be able to help us get Kevin out of jail. Besides, we're going to pay a lot for the fine. We just need to double it, in exchange for getting Kevin out.

Kevin's sentence was only a few months, but Hailey couldn't help herself. She couldn't bear the embarrassment if her socialite friends found out about Kevin's problems. All the goodwill she had built up over Kevin's achievements... could be ruined in one night.

To this day, Hailey has not dared to meet her friends. Even though they had an agenda to meet on the weekend, Hailey chose to avoid it. It was better than Hailey meeting them and receiving scathing criticism from those women's ignorant mouths.

"Thank you, Husband. But... who are you going to call?"

Louis looked the other way, he seemed to be remembering. "I have a distant relative from my father's family. His name is Hendrick. He must be interested in money, right?"

Louis wasted no time and dialed Hendrick's number. The phone rang twice before a deep, gravelly voice answered. "Louis, what brings you to call after all this time?"

"Hendrick, I need your help," Louis said, the urgency clear in his voice.

There was a pause on the other end. "You know I don't involve myself in family affairs. What's changed?"

"Kevin. He's in trouble, and Hailey's a mess. I need to get her out of jail."

"Hmm, family matters, you say?" Hendrik's voice sounded brooding. "Meet me at my house in an hour. We'll talk about it in person."

Louis hung up the phone, relief mixed with uncertainty. Hendrik was known for his connections and his ability to solve problems, but dealing with him often meant owing him a favor. He glanced at Hailey, who was sitting on the couch, her eyes red-rimmed and exhausted.

"I've contacted Hendrick. He wants to meet," Louis told her. Hailey's face brightened for a moment, hope shining in her eyes. "Do you think he can help, Lou?"

"I hope so, but we need to be prepared. Hendrick doesn't do things for free," Louis reminded.

An hour later, Louis and Hailey stood outside Hendrik's magnificent home. The house's grandeur was intimidating, a stark contrast to their simple lifestyle. They were ushered into a luxurious study where Hendrik sat, exuding an aura of authority. "Louis, Hailey, what brings you here?" Hendrik asked, his sharp gaze fixed on them.

"It's Kevin, Hendrick," Hailey called out, her voice shaking. "He's in jail, and we need your help to get him out."

Hendrick leaned back in his chair, cupping his fingers. "I only heard about it because I've been busy with an escaped convict lately. Anyway... I can help, but it won't come without a fee."

"We'll do whatever it takes," Louis said firmly, his resolve unwavering.

Hendrik nodded, a faint smile on his lips. "Alright. I think you guys should start determining the right price for Kevin. I need to get him some leniency, he needs to behave and... I'll help him out after talking to my people. But it's a risk, my boss can't know. And you can set the price for the risk I'm about to take. "Louis and Hailey exchanged glances, silently agreeing to this unexpected deal. "You can write the amount yourself," Louis said, placing a blank check on Hendrick's desk. "And we'll help you get the money."
