CHAPTER 52
Main Hall, 12:00 am.
"So, you guys are already dating? Really 'dating' like a couple?"
It was Luke. He was sitting next to Ace in the main hall of the dormitory since ten minutes ago. Nicholas had called them both through Noel and the two chose to chat while waiting for the young detective to come meet them.
"I don't know, I guess we just went for a walk," Ace replied lightly and then went back to the game on his phone.
Luke squinted. "That would be a lie. You guys must have... well, look, your faces are glowing today." He raised both eyebrows ignorantly. "Something must have happened, right?"
"We just made up and started being friends."
Luke shrugged his shoulders dismissively. "Being friends is a sign that you and Alicia have made peace with your complicated relationship," he said sagely. "That's good news."
"By the way, where's Nicholas?" Ace changed the subject and looked around. "What did he call us here for?"
"I don't know," Luke replied nonchalantly, as he got busy with his laptop again.
After a few minutes, Nicholas finally appeared. He was wearing a black V-neck t-shirt with denim pants. It didn't look like Nicholas;the one Ace knew. "What's up with you, man?" teased Ace, once Nicholas sat down in front of him.
Luke just blinked his eyes a few times at the change in Nicholas' appearance. "Did you do what I asked, Luke?" Nicholas ignoring Ace instantly broke the curly-haired man's reverie.
The man named Luke Hauld nodded awkwardly-because Ace didn't stop glancing suspiciously at him-while handing Nicholas his laptop. "He hasn't contacted anyone other than his father," Luke explained, adding to Ace's suspicions.
Nicholas accepted Luke's laptop and stared at the screen thoughtfully. While there was silence, Ace suddenly cleared his throat, "So now, you suspect Alicia of having to tap her cell phone because she lost to me?"
Spontaneously, Nicholas looked up. His eyes met Ace's dark brown eyes which looked back at him coldly. "I didn't lose and you didn't win." Meanwhile, Luke just shuddered in horror when Nicholas said that sentence.
"But Alicia came home with me," Ace said with a triumphant grin.
"She just didn't feel right last night," Nicholas retorted.
"Whoo!" Luke exclaimed interceding. "The look in your eyes is really bothering me. What's going on?" He looked at Ace and then at Nicholas in turn; waiting for an answer.
"I'll be neutral and rational from now on." Nicholas finally returned the laptop to its owner--Luke. "Alicia is involved in every case and is always closest to the victim. Shouldn't I investigate?"
Ace chuckled mockingly. "This makes no sense. You're acting like that just because you feel like you've been rejected by her."
"I wasn't rejected!" she quickly retorted.
"Oh, obviously," Ace retorted in a high tone. He straightened up and pointed boldly at Nicholas' face. "You. Broken. Heart. Nicholas," he continued to clarify.
"I said no!" snapped Nicholas. His face now turned red; holding back his anger. "Now it's up to you. Are you going to join the search for the real culprit and restore your father's good name or stay silent, hiding from all this trouble?" from his tone, it could be heard that Nicholas was trying to push him gently.
Ace chuckled again, getting fed up with those who didn't believe in Alicia. "You're getting influenced by Noel and Amanda apparently."
"This has nothing to do with them," Nicholas exclaimed indignantly. "We just need to prove everything. Why are you talking all over the place?" and the young detective got up from his chair.
"Okay, fine, guys." Luke also got up and caught Ace's attention as well as Nicholas'. "We need to find out and catch the culprit as soon as possible." He closed his laptop and clutched it to his chest. "If you're on the side of that 'crazy' girl, then you need to come prove it, Ace. And you, detective, are we really going to Alicia's house now?"
***
"I'm a little nervous about meeting my future in-laws."
"Don't be!" said Nicholas, after he knocked on Alicia's door.
Luke just rolled his eyes lazily while the two men in front of him continued to argue-about Alicia. They had just arrived after traveling for about four hours due to traffic jams.
"Good afternoon, sir," greeted Nicholas as he showed his identity to the old man who had just opened the door.
After explaining the purpose of their visit to Alicia's house, the old man, Frank Preth, invited them to come in and sit in the living room. Frank also immediately served them some hot tea, which did nothing to break the tense atmosphere between them.
"I didn't expect any of this to actually happen," Frank sighed, as Nicholas finished explaining everything.
Nicholas straightened up and looked straight at Alicia's adoptive father. "Can you tell me everything you know, everything about your daughter?" Nicholas glanced at Ace and Luke briefly before turning back to Frank. "Perhaps right now, your daughter's life is in danger."
Frank nodded. "In the past, both of Alicia's parents died in a single accident in the San Antonia area." He began in an anxious tone, his eyes wandering somewhere. "Then she was adopted by the Pennie family who turned out to be worse than I thought."
"What do you mean, sir?" this time Ace spoke up.
"The man turned out to be a big mobster in Brooklyn. Something went wrong and they were both found murdered and their house was burnt down," Frank continued sadly. "Very sad."
Ace and Nicholas exchanged glances. Luke, meanwhile, was still quietly watching. "What about Alicia?" asked Ace in a worried tone.
Frank got up from the sofa and reached for the family photo hanging on the wall. Those sad eyes looked at the faces of the people in the photo with a sad look. "No one survived except Alicia, the girl was taking extra lessons at school and when she returned--" Frank hung his words in the air and then gave the old figurine to Nicholas. "Alicia was severely traumatized, they call it partial amnesia. She's forgotten all those horrible events and only remembers the memories she wants to remember, before all those terrible things happened."
Ace shook his head in concern. "It must be really hard being Alicia," he sympathized.
Nicholas silently looked at the photo in his hand intently. "Excuse me, Mr. Frank, who is this girl?" he pointed to the face of a girl sitting next to Alicia - in a blue dress with a red bow on her head.
"Rosie Pennie, she's Alicia's missing sister. The biggest possibility is that the mafia group killed her somewhere else." Frank exhaled heavily. "She is the biological daughter of Hans Pennington and Julia Greenie."
Nicholas and Ace suddenly turned to each other and rounded their eyes. Whether it was a coincidence or not, they both caught their breath and there was a moment of silence.
"Are your thoughts the same as mine, Ace?"
Ace nodded, without removing the look of horror from his face. With difficulty, he continued,

"Alicia is really in danger now."
CHAPTER 53Main hallway - 9:00 pm"I had no idea that Nicholas would be that annoying. Really."Brittany pursed her lips and chuckled as she walked with Alicia down the main hallway. The two of them had just spent their evening hours in the library and were about to head back to their rooms for the night."What did you expect? Nicholas is a perfectionist, you know," Alicia said simply. "And me... a rambunctious girl like me would suit him?" She ended her sentence with a bitter smile; it sounded pessimistic.Brittany just rolled her eyes lazily and scowled. "Not Nicholas, not with Ace." She shuddered lazily. "I think you should date Manu Rios or Justin Bieber instead," she said sarcastically. "You seem very picky too, Alicia."Alicia chuckled amusedly, unable to contain herself from Brittany's ridiculous joke.Until suddenly, Amanda and Selena appeared from opposite directions and blocked their way. No one made a sound, until Selena decided to clear her throat;breaking the atmosphere.
CHAPTER 54"They died in horrible ways. Hans was killed with silver metal in his chest and Julia died of poisoning.""What now? Can't you go any faster, Nic?!" said Ace anxiously.Meanwhile, Luke sat in the back seat holding on tightly to his seatbelt as Nicholas drove the car at high speed. Several times the detective ran red lights and overtook vehicles that were bigger than the car. Luke seemed to be frightened by it. "I could die if he does that, Ace," Luke said nervously."Alicia is in danger. We have to find her soon!" said Ace impatiently. Before Nicholas could respond, Luke's cell phone broke the silence."Pick it up, Luke!" ordered Ace, still in a high-pitched voice.Luke sighed rudely and pulled his harness tight, before reaching into his pants pocket to retrieve his cell phone. "Who's calling me at this crucial time, anyway? Just watch out if it's not important." That complaint suddenly vanished when Brittany's name appeared on the screen. She hurriedly picked up the call.
CHAPTER 55Golden Hospital, New York. 3 years later. The sound of the hemodynamic monitor in the hospital's VVIP room seemed to be a humming of hope for the young man. The graph on the monitor screen showing the changes in the waves rising and falling was the only sign that - at least - his father was still alive. His father being declared alive was enough for Ace Blake. For the past week, Mr. Wilson Blake (Ace's father) had been hospitalized in a coma due to a sudden heart attack. This is said to have happened because his business had declined drastically. The old body lay weakly on a white-clothed bed. At the same time, his nose was protected by a breathing apparatus to supply oxygen. As far as the eye could see, Ace could see that the old body was surrounded by several other medical devices - such as a yring pump, a heart rate recorder and even a suction machine - to keep his condition stable."How is he now?"Ace Blake, was finally asked to replace his father as CEO of several lar
CHAPTER 56Golden University, New York. The hurried footsteps of someone who seemed to be in a hurry sounded faint to Alicia's ears. But her hunch was never wrong. Alicia finally decided to pause as soon as she reached the campus gate to remove the earphones that had been clogging her ears. She turned around and found Brittany (her best friend) there.Brittany Scoots, the blonde-haired girl who was wearing a white jumpsuit and black ankle boots that afternoon, looked out of breath when she reached Alicia. Her temples were covered in sweat and her mouth was open, seemingly trying to suck in the oxygen around her."Britt?"Brittany and Alicia had been friends for the past two years and they had both chosen the same college to continue their education. Although both of them were not in the same major concentration. Alicia chose criminology and Brittany returned to her passion for design."Oh my, Alicia!" Brittany's breathing was still labored, making it sound strange now. "I called you e
CHAPTER 57Golden University, New York"So today, we're going to get to know the four basic human traits."Alicia sat pensively in her chair in the corner of the classroom. Her eyes were facing straight ahead, but her mind was wandering all over the place. She had been losing her focus lately."A theory says, humans have four basic characters. They are the leader choleric, the peace-loving plegmatic, the sociable saguinis and the always-planned melancholic."Since talking to Nicholas yesterday, her feelings had become uncomfortable. The girl was forced to refuse detective Nicholas' request just because she felt bad for her boyfriend, Ace. Her relationship with Ace was like something tied up. She always felt like she was cheating on him just by talking to the opposite sex.Alicia knew very well that Ace wouldn't like it if he found out that Alicia was helping Nicholas in another murder case even though her feelings continued to be plagued by curiosity and guilt. All those deaths always
CHAPTER 58Golden Hospital, New York."The victim was pronounced dead due to suffocation and heart failure."Nicholas was now staring at the body, which was almost completely covered by the white cloth in front of him, in distress. The forensic doctor had performed the autopsy and explained all the results to Noel before he arrived."Could she have suffocated to death?"And Noel nodded. "The doctor suspects that the perpetrator may have strangled the victim using something elastic with great force," he added. "The ligature marks on her neck also suggest that she was strangled repeatedly until all her organs stopped functioning and she eventually suffered heart failure."Noel's statement made Nicholas shake his head. "The criminal didn't just want to see the victim die, he wanted more." His bright brown eyes looked at Noel straight on. "He wants to see his victims suffer before they die."Suddenly, Noel shuddered in horror. "Those words sound even more horrifying when you say them, det
CHAPTER 59New York City police station.Nicholas took a deep breath and exhaled heavily. He did not get much information from his four witnesses. Now, there was only one witness left in front of him. Nicholas really expected a lot from that girl. But this time, he would not be interrogating her alone. Alicia had arrived and was now sitting with him in the white dominated room."So, how do you know Natalie?" Nicholas began."I don't really know her," said Christina, the last witness Nicholas had. "I asked her out because I thought she was friendly enough with the other participants.""Was there anything suspicious about her while you were talking?"Then Christina shook her head. "But...," she frowned; appearing to be thinking. "Our conversation was interrupted when I told her that I had a serious illness and had been admitted to Golden Hospital for a long time." Christina looked at Nicholas and then Alicia in turn. "She suddenly raised her tone and left me. She really disliked that ho
CHAPTER 60For two days Alicia couldn't stop thinking about the cases Nicholas was handling. The way the perpetrators killed their victims reminded her of memories from her past. Couldn't what was happening now be related to those bad times?Alicia is currently sitting on a bench in the campus park alone, contemplating everything. The absence of the lecturer in her last class gives her more time to think about it all in peace. But the series of murders in the past, Alicia can no longer avoid. The first victim, Natalie Heele, manages to remind her of a male student named James Portman who was killed on the first day of her move. The second victim, Rich Greek, was treated the same way as Elena Sanders who died from cyanide poisoning. The names of the victims in her past and how they died before Alicia's eyes, made her almost lose her mind now.Was it Amanda again?"No way," she thought. The girl named Amanda who was determined to be the mastermind of all the murders in her past was now
CHAPTER 275 Nicholas drove the car as fast as he could. He cut through the streets knowing that Alicia was in danger and needed to be rescued immediately. At this moment, Nicholas deliberately did not turn on the siren in his car to avoid things that threatened Alicia. Arriving at Alicia's house, Nicholas could see a suspicious car near Rick and his mother's house. Nicholas' eyebrows furrowed and he slowed down the car. While looking around, Nicholas tried to think of a plan. Until finally, Nicholas stopped his car right behind the suspicious car. Nicholas got out of the car, but his gaze remained wary. He took out his gun and pointed it downwards as he walked into Alicia's yard. He realized that Alicia's door was unlocked even though the lights were off. Just as Nicholas entered Alicia's house, a punch landed from behind. But Nicholas was strong enough to withstand it, so the man immediately turned around and pointed the gun at Ace. But Ace was also ready to shoot Nicholas in the
CHAPTER 274Nicholas observed the change in Selena's expression from a different room. She stood up and hugged herself while frowning."She keeps bringing up Glen. It's starting to worry me," Nicholas muttered. While on the other side, Noel began to open the folder given by Nicholas. There were several sheets of paper inside. They were reports done by Peter and that surprised Noel. He peered into the folder."I didn't know Nicholas would give me this much work." Noel's complaint was heard by Nicholas in a different room, but Nicholas ignored it and chose to focus on Selena. Noel looked at Selena then smiled and put the papers on the table. "I don't want to read all the writing on this paper. So, what can you give me to get me to get you out of prison?""I... I didn't kill anyone."Noel waved her hands in the air, she seemed to look down on the opponent. "That's a very standard thing. Do you have any evidence? Everyone in that base camp is dead, none of them can give you testimony. So
CHAPTER 273Glen looked up, he hadn't finished his fries yet. "Are you leaving now, Uncle? Are you going to see my mom?"Nicholas mumbled for a while, before finally nodding his head. "I'm going to take care of some work and meet with your mother. Is there anything you want to say to her?"Glen's face grew more enthusiastic as he finished the fries in his mouth and looked thoughtful. He looked around before finally seeing Nicholas again. Raising his index finger in the air, Glen said, "I want you to tell my mom that I miss her a lot. I want some chocolate candy from Uncle Chuck's shop! They have the best chocolate in town and I want to try it."Now, it was Nicholas' turn to raise his eyebrows enthusiastically. "Do you know Uncle Chuck's?""My friends in class talk about it, but I don't know. I just heard about it and wanted to try the chocolate candies they have."Nicholas nodded his head. He smiled widely and rubbed the top of Glen's head in relief. At least, the boy still had some e
CHAPTER 272Nicholas dropped Alicia off in front of Alpha Company's office, while he continued on his way to the daycare. He got out of his car, with a bag of fries from Mcd. Nicholas walked in and was met by Lim Sara.Lim Sara, who was working, greeted Nicholas politely. "Good morning, Detective. Have you come to pick up Glen?"A small mumble was heard from Nicholas. He finally explained the situation to Sara. "Um, well, the police still have to check a few things from Mrs. Selena. It may take some time, can Glen stay here a little longer?"Lim Sara looked worried. The woman with her beautiful hair coils mumbled, before nodding and replying, "Of course, Detective. But it seems like Glen is worried about his mother, he's asked about her several times and I can only say that she's at work." Sara turned around, then showed Glen who was sitting alone in the corner of the study room. "Because he stays here alone, without the other children, he thinks that his mother is angry.""Has Glen e
CHAPTER 271Alicia leaned on Nicholas' shoulder, she let the blanket cover their bodies on the sofa. After a night of sleeping together, Alicia woke up first. She took a deep breath and woke Nicholas up."Nick?"While shaking Nicholas' hand, Alicia tried to get her lover to wake up. And after a while, Nicholas did wake up."Um, good morning, Alicia." Nicholas adjusted his sitting position, he then blinked his eyes and began to speak. "How did you sleep last night?"Alicia mumbled. Letting go of the blanket covering her body, she hugged herself. "I got a good sleep because of you. But can't you just relax like this? You said you were going to check on Selena again today?""Yes, there will be a cross-examination. Noel will try to provoke her with psychological techniques," Nicholas said. He looked ahead, then moistened his dry lips. "I wonder to what extent Selena knows information about Ace. If Selena can tell the police about the steps Ace is taking, it would be great for all of us."
CHAPTER 270Nicholas put on an apron, before grabbing a cutting board and knife. He took out the onions, garlic and chili peppers. Skillfully, Nicholas began to chop the ingredients into small pieces, and then he heated the oil in the wok. He prepared to put in all the ingredients, and after the smell of onions was there, Nicholas put in the minced meat that he took from the refrigerator. His big hands started moving here and there quickly. He was like a professional chef. Sautéing, putting in spices and making everything better.Besides cooking the meat, Nicholas also prepared two loaves of bread on a plate. He placed the meat onto the bread, then garnished it with lettuce, tomato and some sauce on top.Nicholas patted his palms when he was done. He took off the apron, put it back on the table and started to prepare the two plates of food for the dining table. It was raining outside, and Alicia was still covering herself with a blanket on the sofa.It looked like Alicia was completel
CHAPTER 269Knock! Knock! Knock!Alicia opened her eyes after hearing a knock on the door. She tried to blink her eyes, then got up from her bed. She walked with her weak body to the door. The transparent door showed Nicholas outside, so Alicia didn't have to worry about opening the door. The girl opened the door and Nicholas greeted her enthusiastically. "Hey, Alicia. Why... what's wrong with you? Your face looks pale."Nicholas pressed the back of his hand to his forehead, checking Alicia's body temperature manually. He felt an unusual heat. There was something strange and Nicholas looked at Alicia worriedly."You have a fever, Alicia." Nicholas put his arm around Alicia and carried her into the house. Nicholas closed the door behind him and gently pushed Alicia into the living room. Nicholas helped Alicia to sit down. "Have you had a fever since morning?"Alicia nodded her head. "I... went to see Anna at her house.""Did you manage to meet Anna?""She... was close to my mother, Nic
CHAPTER 268"I may be ignorant of thethe law, I've run afoul of the constitution and statutes, but I know you'll remain a fugitive as long as you live in this world.a fugitive as long as you live in this world."Ace furrowed his browdeeply. "I'll have to think about it."The Fixer picked up the bagwith the money and held it in his lap like the baby he loved. While picking upseveral stacks of money and smelling the odor, The Fixer continued, "If you'dagree to my game, you can come the day before you're due to leave forEngland. Oh, and take Alicia with you. She has to 'die' with you too, right?"They exchanged glances fora few moments, before Ace finally turned around and left The Fixer's hiddenThe Fixer's hidden warehouse. He handed over the one million dollars he gotfrom stealing Amanda, Jill and Jason's money in order to escape farther than New York.than New York. But faking death? Ace hasn't thought of thatbefore.Meanwhile, insidehis base camp, The Fixer was feeling go
CHAPTER 267CHAPTER 267Ace put on his black gloves before he got into the car. His brown eyes looked ahead, while both hands held the steering wheel. The engine hadn't been turned on yet, so the road ahead was very dark. Ace managed to hide the car in a narrow alley that only fit Ace's car. Even then, Ace had to work hard to get it out carefully. After the chase that almost got him caught by Nicholas, Ace felt even more threatened. The streets of New York City were lined with his face. He was the most wanted fugitive in New York City. Even billboards that used to display commercial advertisements or important notices were now replaced with his face. Everyone was looking for Ace Blake."Damn. Where am I going to go now? I can't go without Alicia, but taking her without a plan won't do me any favors either."After thinking for a while, Ace finally started the engine of his car. He positioned the car so that it could exit the narrow alley. The car blended into the crowded street, but Ac
