In the silence, they waited for Fiona's answer.
She suddenly felt an overwhelming pressure; neither choice, eating or not eating, seemed like a good one.
Her pretty face darkened, and as she recalled the scene where Calum had proposed to Megan, she steeled herself. Under the gaze of everyone, she picked up the seafood and ate it.
The taste was very good—surprisingly good.
“This doesn’t taste that bad.”
Her choice was undoubtedly a sign of her approval of Lee.
Lee smiled, and Calum’s face immediately turned extremely unpleasant. “We grew up together, and I never knew Fiona liked seafood.”
Of course, he didn’t know. To Claum, there was always only Megan, never her.
Over the years, because Calum was allergic to seafood, Fiona had gotten used to avoiding it, which made Calum mistakenly think that she didn’t like it either.
Fiona knew that Calum was angry, but she only maintained a faint smile.
The four of them had dinner, each with a hundred concerns. It seemed like a peaceful and sunny gathering, but in reality, there were undercurrents beneath the surface.
After dinner, Fiona wrapped her arms around Lee’s as they said goodbye to Sir Jones. Calum had disappeared somewhere and did not see them off.
The stars were twinkling in the sky above them.
Fiona and Lee sat in the car, enveloped in silence. As the car drove out of the villa, Fiona couldn’t help it anymore and asked., “Mr. Blaze, why did you come here?”
She had so many questions, and since she hadn’t had the chance to ask earlier, she had to get the answers now.
Fiona turned her body to look at him. Before she could get an answer, she saw him stop the car by the roadside, then mimic her posture and look at her.
“Fiona, no matter how you look at it, I am far more suitable to be your boyfriend than the man you’re renting.” Lee spoke clearly, each word heavy with intent. “Moreover, if I hadn’t stepped in today, how would you have handled it? I thought you should at least be grateful to me.”
“I never said I wasn’t grateful, it’s just…”
“Then how do you plan to thank me?”
“Huh?” Fiona’s eyes widened. How did it feel like he was leading her into something?
She saw Lee lean closer, his dark eyes fixed on her with intensity. His voice was almost a whisper. “Fiona, nothing’s free in this world. Besides, I’m the ‘energetic guy with eight-pack abs’ you’ve been talking about.”
The words should have sounded perfectly normal, but Lee emphasized the part about abs, and as she heard them, her cheeks grew warm.
He was so close that Fiona could hear his heartbeat, and his gaze, just like that night, was raw and unfiltered.
“You were quite observant that night, or were you lost in the sensation?”
Fiona’s face burned even more. After a while, she managed to squeeze out a few words, “Do you want to sleep with me?”
He did want to sleep with her, but that wasn’t all he wanted.
His breath was heavy, brushing against her delicate face. Lee’s throat unconsciously bobbed, and his hand gripping the backrest tensed with visible veins.
Just when Fiona thought he was going to lean in for a kiss, Lee straightened up.
He placed one hand on the steering wheel and spoke in a serious tone, “Ms. Shaw, you do have the looks, and that night’s experience was indeed wonderful. But I wouldn’t take advantage of the situation.”
Fiona was so embarrassed she wanted to find a hole to crawl into.
What was she even thinking?
Was it lust?
“In a few days, there’s a banquet. If Ms. Shaw wants to thank me, how about accompanying me to attend?”
“Okay.”
Fiona didn’t even hesitate, responding immediately.
Lee saw the determined look in her eyes and it completely amused him.
“Isn’t that cute?”
“Huh?” Fiona didn’t quite catch it.
Lee smiled without saying anything.
The next day, Fiona went to work as usual, and she had almost forgotten about yesterday’s events.
If it hadn’t been for Calum finding her during lunch, Fiona might have completely forgotten she even had a “real boyfriend.”
“Fiona.”
A Maybach stopped by the roadside, and Calum, dressed in a black suit, walked toward her.
Her colleagues were stunned.
“Damn, Fiona, is this your suitor? He’s too handsome!” exclaimed Emily.
“Exactly! This guy seems like he should be from heaven. How come he’s here on earth? Fiona, you’ve been hiding him well.”
“I knew a beauty like Fiona couldn’t have been without admirers. Turns out she’s been hiding it from us.”
By that time, Calum had already reached them. Fiona was afraid he might misunderstand, so she quickly explained to her colleagues., “Stop messing around. He’s my brother, not what you think.”
Her colleagues suddenly understood, their faces full of regret.
After parting with her colleagues, Calum took Fiona to a nearby restaurant.
She picked up the menu but suddenly heard Calum question her. “Brother? Fiona, when did I become your brother? If I’m not mistaken, we still haven’t gotten a divorce, right? Legally, I’m still your husband.”
Slowly, she put down the menu and looked at him silently.
The whole way, Calum’s expression had been dark. Could it be because of this?
“Calum, you know very well that our marriage is fake. Besides, we grew up together, and you’re older than me. Calling you a ‘brother’ isn’t wrong, right?”
Although she said that, when Calum heard her say “brother,” he felt very uncomfortable.
His brows remained furrowed, and Calum made his intention clear. “Fiona, Lee is not someone you can control. You two are not suited for each other. It’s better to leave him while you can.”
“Is that all?”
Fiona had never seen Calum look so upset. He continued with serious intent, “You’re still young. There’s no need to rush into marriage. Even if you never marry, the Jones family can take care of you. In short, I don’t approve of you and Lee being together.”
At that moment, Fiona felt a suffocating pressure in her chest.
Why did he get to decide when she should get married, when she should get divorced, and who she could be with?
All these years, Fiona had never lived according to her own wishes. Whatever Calum said, she had to follow.
During their marriage of three years, it was the first time Calum had appeared at the law firm, so that’s why everyone was curious about him.
She remembered that a year ago, at the firm’s annual party, she had drunk a lot, and Calum had promised to pick her up.
But as her colleagues left one by one, Calum’s phone was unreachable. On that cold winter night, she waited by the side of the road until morning.
In the end, she caught a high fever and spent three days in the hospital. Later, she found out that Calum hadn’t come because Megan had said she wanted to see him, and Calum, without thinking, bought a plane ticket to surprise Megan overseas, forgetting that someone had been waiting for him in the cold.
She was furious, maybe because she had suppressed it for too long. “Calum, this is my business.”
She sounded resolute, like a rebellious girl. It was the first time in her life that Fiona had gone against Calum’s wishes.
Calum was stunned, the shock.
Then, Fiona’s attitude softened, but her expression remained cold. “If you have time in the next few days, let’s go get the divorce certificate.”
“You’re so eager to divorce me?”
Fiona was even more confused as she listened. Wasn’t this what he was expecting?
Calum’s face darkened. “Grandpa needs my ID card to take care of something. It was not with me now. We’ll have to wait a few days.”
“Wait a few days?”
Calum’s eyes widened, and he suddenly stood up. “Fiona, do you really want to get rid of me that badly?”
