37. Alex Explained

“Why are you doing this to me?” Leonardo looked at Alex very sharply. From the look in his eyes, there was a lot of disappointment. There was no telling how much he was disappointed in Alex. Truly, he couldn't believe that the one man he trusted the most betrayed him. His chest ached, as if he was being betrayed by the woman he loved. The pain was the same as when Caterina left him.

Alex didn't answer the question. He just stayed silent. Leaning against the wall of the room with his knees supporting his chin. He drummed his fingers on the floor. He acted as if he hadn't heard any questions. He didn't dare look up at all, because he wasn't sure he could hold himself together if he looked at the disappointed look Leonardo was giving him.

“Do you know how disappointed I am in you?” Leonardo's tone sounded burdened. He sighed very roughly, as if there was a lot of weight on his chest.

“Alex!” Leonardo called out with an unknown feeling. “Look at me!”

Alex raised his head. He knew his mistake was unforgivable. Leonardo was still kind enough not to kill him or punish him with severe torture. He was only punished by being locked up in a room without furniture. He could only sit and sleep on the floor without any bedding. For Leonardo, that was cruel enough. Alex was used to being given luxuries, a spacious and luxurious room with a king-size bed; he was also given a maid. By punishing him like this, it was enough for him.

“You know how I feel, don't you? I already think of you as my brother, but this is how you treat me? I trust you so much, but you helped Kate escape. Do you know what danger is waiting for her out there?” Leonardo suppressed every sentence that came out of his mouth.

Alex let out a deep breath. This time he looked at Leonardo with a different look.

“For Kate, there is no place more dangerous than here. For her this place is hell. She loves you so much, but all you give her is pain and hatred. I just want to help her to feel freedom and peace. I don't want her hatred for you to force her to kill you. I think you love her, but maybe my judgment is wrong. You just want to win your ego, because Kate has always shown her love for you. She was always after you, and you felt strange when she stopped loving you.” Alex spoke at length. He looked at Leonardo with friendship.

Leonardo was silent. Perhaps Alex's words just now really hit his heart.

“Kate is a good woman; she can even maintain her chastity at her age. But you took her away by force. You took her away out of anger, not love. You know what you did to her is the same as killing her soul.” Alex continued.

Leonardo looked down. He really felt slapped by all the sentences Alex gave. He felt so stupid because he just followed his ego without thinking about Caterina's feelings at all.

'Shit!'

'You suck!

'Bastard!'

Leonardo cursed himself silently. His hands were clenched tightly into fists, his face red with anger. He was really angry with himself. What Alex did was actually the right thing to do. Alex's intentions were good; he just wanted to save Caterina and Leonardo from a toxic relationship. He shouldn't punish someone with good intentions.

“You love her, don't you?” Alex asked seriously.

Leonardo didn't answer. The look on his face seemed to change after he heard that sentence. Even if he confessed his feelings now, there was no point. Caterina already hated him. There were no more feelings for him other than the hatred that continued to grow.

“It's not too late to fix everything.” Alex tried to convince his boss.

Leonardo sighed harshly. He looked deeply at Alex, who knows what he was thinking now.

“You can be free now.” Leonardo finally made a decision. Because Alex didn't really betray him, the man's goal was only to save both of them.

“I said everything not to seek defense and ask to be released.” Alex tried to explain.

“I know. You can stay in this cage if you feel like it.” Leonardo said indifferently, he turned around and was about to step out of the room.

“No! Don't be so cruel to me!” Alex rose to his feet with a beaming face. He ran over to Leonardo with a bright smile. “Are you still mad at me?”

“A little.” Leonardo replied nonchalantly. They walked side by side out of the room and down every hallway.

“Have you gotten any information on Kate's whereabouts?”

“Not yet. They had bought flight tickets to Australia, but they never made it to the airport. Your car was left at a restaurant not far from here. The waiter said they took a bus to the airport. We've checked the street CCTV; the bus Kate was on was hijacked, and all the passengers were dropped off in the middle of the road except Kate and her father. We don't know who the hijacker is yet.” Leonardo explained everything.

“Did you check Marco?” Alex asked seriously. He thought Caterina and her father could live peacefully out there, but instead they got into trouble before they could escape to safety.

“I've gone to his headquarters and made threats, but he doesn't seem to have anything to do with Kate's problem this time.” Leonardo seemed to be completely outwitted by Marco.

Alex sighed harshly. He was really upset because Caterina was in big trouble.

“I'll look for her now. Give me your search data.” Alex said firmly.

“Ask Ben. He took care of everything while you were locked up.”

“Okay.” Alex said excitedly, then ran to find Ben's whereabouts.
