After yet another restless night, I drag myself out of bed. It's been two weeks since I've seen Liam but every night when I close my eyes I dream of him.
It's the mate bond. Ember explains in her bossy way. It's trying to get you to jump his bones so you can either accept that or reject him. I tell my roommates to go ahead to training and I'll catch up, wanting a moment to myself to compose myself. I enter the small bathroom, splashing ice cold water on my face to force myself to wake up. A quick glance in the mirror makes me cringe. My skin is pale, my green eyes slightly bloodshot and my auburn hair looks more brown than auburn, hanging limply down my back. Try as I might, I only make myself look faintly better - plating my hair and pinching my cheeks to try instil some colour into them. "That's as good as its going to get." I say to myself before I brush my teeth, throw on my training kit and run down to the training grounds where the others are waiting. I yawn behind my hand, barely registering the bitchy comment Lana throws my way as I move to stand by Megan. Jaydon sends us off on our usual run as he sets up what promises to be one hectic obstacle course. He's even roped in Beta Harris for this one. Coming in second to last, I glimpse at the course with some dread. It looks like the leadership team have watched Indiana Jones a few too many times. Complete with see-saw balancing beams and swinging logs, I'm glad when I get pulled to do it last. Maybe I'd learn a few tricks from the others first. We take turns manning the different parts of the course and I physically have to stop myself from falling asleep on my feet. Before long I find myself on the starting block awaiting Jaydon's signal. His raised hand drops as he presses the stopwatch and I leap towards the first obstacle - a gigantic climbing wall that had been dragged in. Clambering quickly to the top and dropping to the ground, I tackle the next few obstacles. My foot gets tangled in the cargo net and I waste a few precious moments getting loose before continuing. Just the swinging logs and the tyres left! I hear Ember silently rejoicing.I feel Liam watching me before I smell him, his presence distracting me from the task at hand.WHACK! The breath is knocked out of me as one of the flying logs smash into my ribs. Out of the corner of my eye I see Liam start to react before he forces himself to step back. "Shit! Sorry Nats." Ricky apologizes sheepishly as I grip my ribs and force myself to complete the course. "That's it for today runts. Juan, you got the slowest time so you're doing dishes." Jaydon announces before walking away with Beta Harris."Awww damn!" Juan groans as the rest tease him good-naturedly about his fear of heights. "Wolves aren't meant to climb!" He exclaims as he starts pulling off his shirt. "But we definitely can swim! Last one to the lake has to help me with dishes!" He sprints off into the distance, the rest of the recruits racing after him. I shake my head at them, trying to control my breathing to avoid the shooting pain across my chest. No way in hell was I going running after them! "Ok, let's see the damage." Ricky sighs next to me as he guides me to a log and lifts my shirt to reveal the bruise slowly beginning to form. He prods it slightly before he's distracted by an ominous growling."Hands off my mate, scamp." Liam breathes, flinging Ricky away from me. I try to stand up to intervene but a sharp pain forces me back down and steals my breath away. Liam quickly settles beside me and holds his hand against my ribs."Hands off my sister, creep!" Ricky starts before halting in his tracks. "Hold on… mate? Is this true Nats?"He turns to me and I merely nod, in too much pain to vocalize. "Shit. I have a hundred questions which you're going to answer as soon as you can, sis." Ricky emphasizes the sis part while looking at Liam. My breathing is shallow with pain and I feel myself losing grip on the last threads of composure. Liam lifts me in his arms and warmth floods over me, some of the pain abating slightly."We need to get you to the pack doctor to get checked out." He says, walking towards a building on the far edge of the settlement. Ricky follows closely behind like a puppy. I can sense that he's frustrated by the turn of events and the fact that I never told him about Liam. It's not my fault though… we've both been so busy with training that we haven't really had a chance to chat. The doctor obviously sees us coming as he's waiting with the door open as we approach. "Well, well, well… what do we have here?" The elderly man asks as Liam lays me on the examination bed in the relatively cramped treatment room. "Ribs." I manage to breathe out.One brief examination and an xray later, Doc diagnoses me with broken ribs and orders Liam to put me in the ward next door to his treatment room. "I'm going to give you something for the pain and something to help you sleep for a few hours. Your body is clearly run-down else you'd be well on your way to healing by now." Doc says, patting my hand. "She's not sleeping and barely eating Doc. I honestly don't know what's happening!" Ricky tells the doctor. My eyes shoot to Liam who bows his head immediately. "I'm going to leave your patient to you, Doc. I have some work to catch up on. " Liam says as he walks towards the door, glancing at me one more time before he exits.Jaydon paid me a visit before dinner, telling me to rest and recover. The incident had reached the Alpha's ears and he had ordered a respite for the recruits. Two days off of training and we were allowed to visit the nearby village. I'm sure Megs, Ash and Amy are ecstatic about that, the topic of shopping having come up numerous times in our cabin. "Thanks for visiting me, Jaydon." I say, feeling my body being pulled towards sleep once again. I've got no clue what drugs Doc had given me but they sure did work a charm. I woke up with a start as the sun was starting to rise. I could smell the lingering scent of Liam and knew that he had been in the room. I managed to pull myself out of bed and made my way to the bathroom, the pain being more of an irritation now than actual pain. Megan had dropped off some clothes and toiletries so I gratefully took a much needed shower and brushed my teeth before dressing in the tank top and shorts Megan had provided.
After days of little to no sleep, my body launched itself into full blown hibernation and I spent the two days we were given off between sleeping and snacking on the mountain of food Megan kept me supplied with. By the end of the second day I was more than ready to face the world and get back to training. After our obligatory run around the lake, Jaydon and another man who introduces himself as Beta Suarez announce that we'll be having a special guest to our training today. Alpha Fletcher himself! "The Alpha is so hot. He trained the same time as my brother and we ended up hanging out all the time." Lana giggles, tying her shirt into a knot at the front so that it tightens suggestively against her breasts. Juan and Matt overhear the discussion and roll their eyes in unison. "You planning on being the Alpha's new bedmate there Lana?" Juan asks her with a suggestive thrust of his hips. "Although I'm sure once with you would be enough."
Liam is sitting in one of the armchairs, his face resting in his hands and looking rather defeated. His hair is also wet having washed it in some other bathroom somewhere in the house and he is clothed in a pair of jeans, leaving his broad chest bare. He looks up as I move a bit closer and a strange light flashes in his eyes before he stands up and comes to me. "You saved my sister, Natalia. I cannot think how I can ever repay you." His voice os hard but I can read the suppressed emotions in his face. "I just did what any lycan would have done." I take hold of his hand, offering my support. "How is she doing?" He pulls me closer to him and I feel warmth spread throughout my body as he wraps his strong arms around me and rests his head on top of mine. "She'll be fine. Vicky is stronger than she seems, she was just caught off guard. I think the emotional wounds may take some time to heal though." I wrap my arms around his waist and lean into him. "I take it the two other pe
Slow and secret definitely upped the intrigue factor, however getting away from the other recruits without being noticed proved to become increasingly difficult. I secretly found myself bumming out on training exercises just so that I'd get saddled with dish duty. Every time without fail Liam would appear and help me out then we'd either chat for ages afterwards or end up in a heated make out session. I have to admit that every time I looked at Liam I felt the need to thank the fates that we were mated. If I had to spend my life linked with another person I was glad it was him. He is the whole package: intelligent, funny, sexy as heck! It's hard to keep my hands off of him when he's nearby… but maybe that's just the whole mate-bond thing. Jaydon had set us to sparring every day since Vicky's attack, nervous that the assailants would return since they didn't accomplish whatever their goal was. We could all tell that the man was living on edge. "You're throwing this round on purpose.
Liam takes a step back and places his hands on my hips."What's wrong?" He asks, worry etched onto his face. I sigh and break away from his hold on me. It's too hard to form words with him being so close to me. "This whole mate bond thing is getting in the way of my training." I rush out, feeling as if the walls are closing in around me. "What do you mean? We've been discreet and no one else has discovered anything about us. What's really going on?""It's a distraction, ok?" I basically shout at him. "I need to focus on improving my skills and you're a bloody distraction!" He looks slightly smug at that admission and I realise I'm using the wrong tactic. "I don't want a mate, you know that. I've never wanted a mate and I never will want a mate." His expression changes suddenly and he looks as if I've just slapped him, staggering back slightly as the verbal blow. "I thought you may eventually feel something for me and that you'd change your mind…" He walks to the bay window and
Three weeks flew by pretty quickly. I learned that Kane was a pretty good hunter using the crude spear he had made by attaching the knife we'd been given onto a long, straight sapling. We feasted daily on pheasants that seemed to be abundant in the woods as well as berries and other fruits we forraged for. Kane even threatened to shift and take down one of the deer which we know are living in the woods. Kane and I had explored the area around our camp, hoping to find another team to raid in order to ease some of the monotony of our daily lives, but we found out that we were very much alone in our little corner of the Dark Moon land. Our relationship had turned to easy comradery, able to read each other as if we have known each other for years instead of the brief three weeks."You'd better be keeping your eyes closed! " I call out to Kane as I quickly wash myself in the stream. He chuckles from where he rests in the shade but doesn't respond further so I quickly finish and throw on
I'd be lying if I said that Kane wasn't a darn good kisser. Even with my extremely limited experience in that department, I could tell that much was true. His lips are soft and consuming, warmth spreads through my body and takes my breath away, leaving me a little dazed. "What was that for?" I ask when he eventually pulls back. He smiles and it almost looks seductive, like he was daring me to ask for more. "I felt like it." He responds before getting up and heading to the stream, pulling off his pants as he walks away to reveal his muscular backside. I quickly avert my gaze and busy myself cleaning up the already spotless camp, although I'd be lying if I didn't imagine grabbing his bare backside with my hands. When he returns he acts as if nothing has happened and continues to engage with me with the relaxed banter I had become accustomed to. It almost made me wonder if what had happened had been in my imagination - almost. "Good," Ember mutters, almost to herself. "We don't need
I take the bag from Kane's hand and inspect it, sniffing it lightly. My nose picks up the musky scent belonging to Beta Harris, the citrus scent of Jaydon and the woody scent of Liam. I swallow hard, knowing Liam had probably been around and had probably even seen me sleeping close to Kane. They had taken everything except for the tarpaulin, rope, and the machete. The change of clothes where I had left them to dry were gone but I did spy the pot of water that was still next to the fire. Everything else is gone."Dammit! It was Jaydon and a few of the Dark Moon leadership." I say, throwing the bag onto the floor. "I guess they thought to up the difficulty level now that we've made it more than halfway through the challenge."Kane laughs, his eyes crinkling in amusement. "What's so funny?" I ask, stomping my foot in frustration like an overgrown toddler. "You realise what the next part of the challenge is?" He grins like a vill
"You look fine! Now can we go?" Liam grumbles as he leans against the door frame. He catches the reflection of my smile in the mirror as I'm hit with the deja vu of it all, just this time it's my mate nagging me instead of my brother. "I just want to look perfect for Ricky's ceremony." I admit, watching in the floor-length mirror as Liam comes to stand behind me, his hand resting on my rounding stomach. "You already do." He says, his lips moving to kiss his mark on my neck and sending tingles down my spine. Four years since we first mated, and I still react this way to his touch. Although I think his pup is helping him a little bit considering the urge I get to jump him every time he takes his shirt off. Apparently it's quite common in pregnancy though. I look at my reflection in the floor length mirror in my parents' house… Ricky's house. It's going to take me a while to think of it as that. The emerald green silk dress leaves very
The sun set far too quickly. One moment it was high up in the sky and the next, it was kissing the horizon as it bid us farewell, making way for the moon to take its place. "Are you ready?" Liam asks as he wraps his arms around me and kisses my temple. "Do I have a choice?" I reply with a laugh, trying to seem braver than I felt. We stand in silence for a moment, staring out across the lake as the sunset reflects its orange and pink masterpiece on the clear water's surface. I'm faintly aware of my friends coming to join us - Kane, Daniel, Matt, Silas, Megan, Ash and Amber. Even Lana joined at the end of the line. Ricky takes his place beside me and clasps my hand in his, squeezing it gently. I can feel his emotions as if they're my own. Hell, they mirror my own. "It is time." Silas breaks the silence and I turn to face my friends. "I wouldn't have been able to get here without you… all of you." I feel a tear roll down my cheek but I
The morning of the challenge arrived too quickly for my liking, and while I was as ready as I was ever going to be, I wasn't confident that I was going to win. Jaydon and Silas had taken personal responsibility to ensure I was "battle ready" as Silas termed it. Basically, they challenged me and tried to correct my weaknesses over and over and over again until I felt like I was going to break. I can't say how much it helped though. I caught a glimpse of Lorenzo fighting with Beta Wyk and he isn't as awful as I was hoping. What did help strangely, was being able to fall asleep in Liam's arms each night. We ended up moving back into my old cabin with the girls and, even though it was a tight squeeze, cuddled together each night in my bunk. Megan initially complained, believing that the top bunk would fall on her along with us while we slept. Her theory was quickly disproved when we managed to squeeze Liam, Amy, Ash, Kane, and myself on the bed without any sign of it
To say that you could hear a pin drop might have been putting it lightly. My words - the challenge issued - results in such complete silence that I can hear my own heart beat. All eyes flit between myself and Lorenzo as we await his response. He swallows loudly, turning to Suarez for guidance… only Suarez seems to have disappeared into the darkness and suddenly, Lorenzo is all alone. He swallows again, the sweat on his palms glistening in the firelight as he fidgets. He knows that he has no choice but to accept. To reject the challenge would mean he would be forced to step down as Alpha anyway. "Alright, I accept," Lorenzo mumbles, his voice strained. Silas smiles knowingly, hooking his thumbs into the belt loops of his jeans. "Considering that neither opponents are from Dark Moon, the challenge will have to be carried out in two days during the full moon so that the Moon goddess can grant her blessing." "If the girl wants to challen
It didn't take long for the recruits to discover that something secretive was happening in the training hall. Although with the guys, Megs and Doc coming and going, it can't exactly be termed secretive anymore. We decided that if I was ever going to ensure that my challenge was both well received by the pack and fair, we would need the recruits' help. They know me better than any of the pack members so will need to vouch for me when it comes to the legitimacy of my claim to the alpha title. "Hey, isn't that my shirt?" Ashley eyes my attire with obvious suspicion. I strike a pose like some fancy runway model and stick my tongue out at her before returning to my task of cutting and buttering bread rolls for the hungry wolves who were passing through for lunch before they resumed their duties. "You shouldn't leave your clothes lying around." I retort with a grin. "You try working eighteen hour shifts and have the energy to tidy up your living quarters. You're just lucky that shirt wa
My body feels as if it's taken flight, all the emotions I'd pushed down since we escaped coming to the surface. I run to the spot that holds the most meaning to me in this pack, stripping my clothes off moments before I dive into the clear water. Hiding behind the waterfall on the ledge that Liam showed me, I curl into a tight ball and let the sobs wrack my body, tears streaming down my face. I don't care. I need this right now. Minutes go by before I'm able to pull myself together and head back to the water's edge. I dress slowly, my mind slowly piecing together information I had gathered over the last few days as well as my stay in Dark Moon. By the time I enter the training hall, I've got a few things well ironed out in my head. I can feel all eyes on me as I take a seat next to Liam and let him draw me into his arms. "What happened?" He asks softly, his hand gently rubbing my back, his heat permeating my frozen skin from my damp hair.
It may not have been how I had always pictured my mind, but our marking had brought Liam back to me. I stare down into his eyes and feel every single emotion that rolls through him as he tries to make sense of what has happened. "What the fukk, Natalia!" Ricky fumes as he paces toward us. "What would have happened if that aconite in his system affected you? Huh? You would have lost Ember again. Did you think about that?" I glance briefly over to my raging brother, ignoring his tirade as I look back down at my mate. "I missed you." I whisper, kissing his lips briefly before I climb off of him and sit down beside him instead. It won't do to be in such an arousing position when the room is full of people. As much as I'd love to make out with my man… and go much further… I don't think our witnesses would appreciate the show. "Nats, babe… what happened?" Liam croaks, clutching my hand in his. I fill him in as quickly and efficie
Sneaking into the pack house in the middle of the day was a lot easier than I had imagined it to be - either Lorenzo had refocused warriors to the border leaving too few to maintain the security within the pack, or Lorenzo believed no one would be foolhardy enough to attack his residence since he had made examples of Harris and Gail. Probably both. Janet had agreed to visit some pack members and was going to try to convince Vicky to go with her, leaving one less resident present in the house. However, judging by the guttural sounds coming from Vicky's bedroom, Janet had not been successful in getting her daughter away. This change of plans actually works in my favour though, leaving Lorenzo otherwise occupied. I sneak in through the kitchen door which leads out into the garden, moving as stealthily as I can muster through the lower floor. No one is there. Liam's study is an utter mess, polar opposites to its state from when I had last visited. Papers li
Kane, Ricky and I watch the sun set from our vantage point at the top of the hill which overlooks the Dark Moon pack homestead. From up here it seems like a picturesque village, all the inhabitants going about their day as if they don't have a care in the world. Only we know the ugly side, the side plagued with intimidation and corruption. We watch in silence as the guards change over, night shift taking the place of the day shift with a shared joke and a slap on the back. They are all young men, all unknown and almost definitely from Lorenzo’s old pack. He would never trust a Dark Moon member to guard their own Beta. Ricky looks over at Kane and myself, a sadness in his eyes which seems misplaced in the man who has always been so happy-go-lucky. The way he has changed since he left the training program is hard to comprehend. It almost feels as if I no longer know my own brother anymore - although I'm sure that once his wolf returns to him we will regain some of
