“Felix, you idiot.”

When I woke up, my face was already streaked with tears. I had been holding onto Eugene’s hand so tightly that my nails had dug into his skin.

“Sorry, I got drunk,” I muttered.

Eugene was quiet for a while before he finally asked, “Who’s Felix?”

I couldn’t remember the last time I had heard someone say his name.

It was as if the world had chosen to forget him.

“He was my love,” I replied softly.

The next morning, Hendrick’s mother called.

After I left, Hendrick dropped everything and went after me.

He was driving so fast that he lost control on a downhill turn.

Now, only his parents stood outside the emergency room.

People who had always seemed so put together now looked like they had aged decades overnight.

Mrs. Sam’s eyes were swollen from crying. The moment she saw me, she broke down again.

“Chloe, the doctor said Hendrick isn’t going to make it. He’s been calling your name. Please, go in and talk to him.”
