Mum’s voice pierced the house like a fire alarm. Honestly, I think she missed her calling as a town crier. Our neighbors three doors down probably jolted awake. I quickly threw on my flannel shirt, slung my bag over my shoulder, and gave the mirror one last check to make sure my hair was decent. My hair—pinkish-blonde, neat, cute, very me—was tied back into a loose ponytail. Satisfied, I darted out of my room and sprinted down the stairs two at a time. “Morning, Mum. Where’s Dad?” I asked, landing on the kitchen stool. She was zipping around the kitchen like a whirlwind, flipping toast, packing lunch, and somehow still glaring at me. “Back in my day, we didn’t have school buses. We’d finish getting ready early and wait at the junction just to catch a ride from classmates whose parents had cars. Now you’ve got the luxury of a bus, and yet, you’re always late.” I sighed. “God knows how many times you’ve told that story. Plus you can just always drop me off.” Dad appeared at the foot of the stairs, briefcase in hand, already chuckling. “Exactly what I was thinking.” “Gosh, I know, right?” I said, grinning at him. Mum folded her arms. “So you’re both ganging up on me now?” “Of course,” Dad said, ruffling my hair. “She’s my only princess.” I fanned myself like a diva. “Jealous much?” Mum squinted at the clock. “You do realize your bus leaves in ten minutes, right?” “Oh no—gotta run!” I lunged across the counter, grabbed the paper bag with my breakfast—sandwich and chocolate milk—and flew out the door like the house was on fire. But halfway down the street, I glanced at my watch—and froze. Twenty. Whole. Minutes. Mum tricked me. Again. I groaned, slowed to a walk, and opened the bag. The sandwich was still warm. I munched slowly, savoring the taste, and sipped my Choco milk as I made my way to the stop. By the time I reached the bench, I’d eaten everything and tossed the paper bag into the nearest bin. I settled onto the bench, casually sipping the milk, when I noticed it. Stares. Lots of them. The kids at the stop were gawking at me like I’d grown a second head. “What?” I snapped. “Never seen a pretty girl drink Choco milk before?” They turned away, pretending they weren’t caught. Whatever. When the bus finally arrived, I climbed on and found a seat near the back. But the stares didn’t stop. They intensified. Even the driver glanced at me twice. I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand. Was something on my face? Crumbs? Milk moustache? I checked my reflection in the window—nothing. I brushed my shirt down and sat upright, trying to act normal. By the time we reached school, I was so done. I was the first one off that bus. But things only got weirder. The hallways were worse. People turned their heads, whispered, stared like I had neon signs stapled to my forehead. I tried to keep my cool, walking with my usual ‘don’t-mess-with-me’ strut. Then came Sabrina. She practically glided up to me, surrounded by her usual swarm of followers, with an emphasis on dramatic. “Oh. My. Gosh, Jasmine!” she squealed, grabbing my arm. “Your hair is so pretty today! Where did you get it done?” I blinked. “Umm… what?” She touched my hair like it was spun gold. “We should totally go to your stylist this Saturday. My treat, obviously.” Her voice was syrupy fake. What was she talking about? My hair was the same. Or at least, I thought it was. “Uh… sure. Gotta run!” I said, ducking out of her grip and speeding down the hallway. I caught a group of juniors staring at me near the lockers. “Quit looking at me, will ya?!” I barked. I needed answers, and I needed Ariana. She was by her locker, flipping through a textbook. “Sup, Ria?” She looked up—and froze. Mouth open. Eyes wide. “Earth to Ria.” I waved a hand in front of her face. She blinked hard. “Girl… what did you do to your hair?” “What are you talking about?” I asked, seriously confused. Without a word, she shut her locker, grabbed my wrist, and yanked me down the hall. “Where are we—” “The bathroom,” she snapped. We burst into the restroom and she spun me to face the mirror. I gasped. My reflection stared back, but something was off. Way off. “My… my hair. My hair!” Strands of it—no, streaks—were blue. Not bright blue, but electric enough to be impossible to miss. And not the even kind you get from a salon. These streaks looked like they had grown out of me overnight. “I… I didn’t do this!” I stammered, touching the strands. “You’re telling me this just happened?” Ria folded her arms. “You didn’t dye it? No prank?” “Why would I prank myself?” I said, panicked. Ria studied me. “You eat anything weird?” “Just the usual sandwich from Mum. That’s not going to dye my hair blue, right?” “You’ve had her sandwiches for years. So unless she’s hiding secret potion mayo, I doubt it.” “I swear it was normal this morning! I even looked in the mirror!” Just then—something happened. The blue strands glowed. Bright, pulsing light. It lasted five seconds, maybe less, but I felt it—like a spark buzzing against my scalp. “Ow!” I flinched, almost yanking my hair. “You saw that, right?” I asked, eyes wide. Ria looked like she’d seen a ghost. “That wasn’t normal. Jasmine… this isn’t ordinary.” I stared at the glowing-then-not-glowing strands. For the first time all day, I felt something deep in my chest—something is happening to me. And it’s bigger than sandwiches and school buses. Something strange had begun. And it started with blue."So Raven said all of that? Wow, this information is a huge lump that's hard to swallow." Ria awed as we walked on our way home."Tell me about it." I said sighing. "Aren't you like, scared or something? The whole deity thingy??" I added.Ria shrugged. "I'm surprised not scared. Besides it's really cool. Zelan is also a deity, our kids will be deities too." She grinned and I shook my head."Is marrying Zelan all you ever think about? Plus, I don't think your children can be deities. You're human." I said."Tch! you don't always have to be a joy killer." She rolled her eyes."I was just being honest." I shrugged."But seriously tho, what's with you dying? Who's coming to get you?" Ria probed."I dunno....the grim reaper?" I muttered and sighed.Ria smacked my arm."Ow!" I hissed."Be serious! So I can know when I'll come and pick up some of your good stuffs before you die.""Wow, what are great and supportive friend you are Ria." I said with sarcasm dripping in my voice as I hung my ar
Chapter 7."It all started when....uhm please don't interrupt and just listen to everything I'm going say." He said and I nodded."Okay so this happened when I was 11, my friends and I were curious about the Human World we've only read about in books. We wanted to eat their food and breathe the air they breathe. We finally got a chance when we found out a messenger was leaving for a mission in the Human World so we sneaked after him through the portal. We arrived at the human world, ate a lot of things, played games until we were so carried away and didn't realize that time had gone. We all jumped through time in a rush and in the process, my marble which I'd always carried around fell from my body. I didn't realize I'd lost it until we got back to our world." He looked at me briefly to make sure I was listening."Now for the second part of the story. Who am I? I'm a Deity. We Deities look over humans. That's our job. There are two types of Deities. There's the Lesser Deities and Th
I shook my head, shaking myself out of the trance and stood straight. He was Still looking at me with an amused look until he stood up and moved his face closer again."I told you last night, you have something that belongs to me." He whispered in my ear, his hot breath fanning my ear.I gulped."As far as I know, we've never met before, well, not until two days ago at the cafe where you saved me from falling. And I swear, I didn't steal anything from you so what stuff of yours do I have with me because I'm confused!" I said flailing my hands in the air.He smiled. "My orb." He said simply."Your what now?" I said and this time around, my voice went up. It was then I'd realized the whole class was watching our little drama. My cheeks turned red.I sighed. "Follow me." I said and dragged him out of class into the empty hallways."You said I have your....uhm what was it again..?" I cracked my brain trying to remember what he called it earlier."Orb." He said."Yeah, orb. What is even th
Chapter 5I ended up sleeping on the couch. You are probably wondering how I was able to sleep after a guy literally appeared and disappeared right in front of me last night. Don't judge me, sleep is important.I climbed the stairs up to my room. I know I said I won't be going into my room anymore but I have to bath duh.On entering the bathroom, after making sure the lock was secured, I proceeded to brush my teeth only to see that the blue strands in my hair had disappeared and instead, my hair had turned fully blue. I wasn't freaking out. You might be wondering how and I wasn't freaking out about this matter because every normal person would have been freaked out since the first day they find out that their hair turned blue overnight.I believe the reason for the whole thing is probably because I ate something strange and my body is reacting to it or something. It's not a reasonable reason but trust me, that "reason" is what's keeping me from freaking out because if I actually find
Not long after Geography class had ended, we were all settled on our seats with every student murmuring as usual. I wasn't left out, Ria was telling me how she wished her life to be if she was some Disney Princess; this girl day dreams a lot.Our school vice chancellor suddenly barged in, trust that everyone kept quiet instantly.Ria hurriedly raced to her seat."Good morning you all!" She said briefly."Good morning Mrs. Mulligans." we all muttered.I hope she isn't here to tell us we're having another compulsory sports class today."Yeah whatever, and no you're not having sports today." she said, clearing the minds of a lot of us, including me."I have a lot to do so anyway, I'm here to introduce to you your new classmates. Yes we're having two new kids amongst us, and I'll like you guys to totally behave yourselves around them." She turned towards the door. "You two may come in now."I don't know why, but I was very uninterested in whatever or whoever she was introducing. I faced m
My eyes widened, everyone and everything around me was frozen. Cars weren't moving, the birds weren't flying, people weren't moving and everywhere was eerily quiet. "What the heck is happening?????" I thought.************************************************************************************ Gently, he let go of me and I couldn't resist starring at those icy blue eyes. His friend stood beside him not saying anything. I turned again to see everyone standing like gold statues, why is that? We were the only ones not frozen or are we dead? No! Okay someone tell me this ain't really happening; probably some shit from my hallucinations.I was still getting mesmerised by what was going on, I didn't notice I was starring at him for so long."Careful next time." He said and walked away. Immediately he stepped his feet into the cafe, the whole street unfroze itself; everywhere lively as before. No one was frozen like statues and everyone were back to doing their businesses.'Okay okay Jasm
