8. A twist in the tale

I was grimacing throughout my ride back home. Kelly offered to drive me back, but she didn’t say a word since we got in. Her eyes were fixed on the road but I couldn’t guess where her mind was. She was perhaps judging me like everyone else had in the past, wondering why I did such a thing. There was no excuse or defense in my favor, so I refrained from saying anything as well.

When it was time to get down, I turned in my seat and asked, “Are you disappointed in me?”

Her face remained stoic, “Yes.” She said, “That was a stupid move, Cassie. You had to suffer for the past three years because of it. Of course I’m upset.”

I didn’t know if it was the look on her face that I never saw before or perhaps it was the grim circumstance I suddenly found myself in, but before I could control myself, I felt hot tears sliding down my cheek. Soon, I was holding back unsuppressable sobs.

“Cassie, come on.” Kelly said, putting an arm around me. “Why are you crying?”

“I don't know. I’m so scared.” I said.

“Don't be. Your problem is now my problem okay? I’m going to fix this.”

I nodded, “Thanks, Kelly.”

With that said, I got out of the car and headed towards my house. I looked at the huge mansion by the street with large gates guarding its entry. The large iron bars opened as I walked towards it, making me wonder how long I’d be allowed to stay here.

The guards were smiling at me in pity. The news of my separation with their master had probably reached them, yet his orders of keeping me out of the house haven’t. It gave me a small hope that there was still time until I had to figure things out between Calvin and I.

Jen and Fiona were nowhere to be found when I went into the house. It was still early in the evening for them to go to bed, so I guessed they were out. I made my way to our room. As I opened the door, I was surprised to find three large suitcases resting beside the foot of the bed.

At the desk, Calvin was working on his laptop, and he only turned around when he heard me walking inside.

“What’s all this?” I demanded, gesturing my hand toward the suitcases.

“That’s your stuff, I got them packed for you.”

“Why?”

He gave me an irritated frown, “Are you dumb? Didn’t I tell you I’m kicking you out?”

“Right now?”

“Yes.”

“What? You’ve got to be kidding me!” I said, utterly shocked, “Where will I go now?”

“I don't care.” He said, “Just get out of my sight, Cassie.”

Fisting my palms on my sides, I took a confident step forward, "Why should I have to move out so soon when we're not divorced yet?"

Calvin laughed incredulously, "Why?” He repeated bitterly. “Because of what you did to Becky three years ago!”

I took a step back instinctively. I had no clue what was going on. Why was he bringing it up now? And what about it? I know that the premise in which I chose to ask him to marry me was not appropriate, but apart from that I did nothing wrong. If anything, I saved Becky’s life. “What I did?” I repeated,“I saved her life.”

“After you failed to kill her completely.” He said.

My eyes widened in surprise at his words. What the hell was he talking about? Was he drunk? Or was I imagining things? Did he seriously say that I tried to kill her? What was wrong with him!

“Becky told me today that you were the one driving the car that night.” He continued, “You purposely crashed her side of the car so she would die and you could marry me. How unfortunate for you that she is still standing in your way, right?”

My mind was in a mess after hearing his words. Why would Becky lie and accuse me of something like this? I didn’t drive the car that day!

“Don't even try to deny it, Cassie. I know Becky won't lie to me.” He said, giving me a cheap look, “I always knew you were obsessed with me. But this is insanity. How the hell could you want to kill your own friend? She is innocent in all this!”

I was completely lost. How the hell was I supposed to defend myself? I knew he was talking nonsense. It wasn’t true. Feeling desperate and confused, I walked up to him. I grabbed his hands and looked into his eyes, hoping he could see the truth in mine.

“Calvin, I swear to God, I never did such a thing. Becky was the one driving that night. She was drunk and she lost control-“

“Enough with your lies, Cassie! I’ve heard enough of them.” He said, pushing my hands off of him. And then, he grabbed my shoulders and pushed me back. “Get out of my house right now, if you still have any decency left in you.”

I stumbled backward, losing my balance and falling to the ground. A sharp pain shot up my arm, making me flinch. I looked up at my husband, shocked by his almost animalistic behavior. From his eyes, I could feel his disgust, or rather, his hatred toward me. I could tell how much he despised me.

I had always been used to his indifferent look, but this time—this time it was different. I had never seen him look at me like this. I had never seen him hate me so much, or treat me like I was nothing. In that moment, I knew I had completely lost him.

But there was only one thought I couldn’t shake.

Who made him change like this? There was only one person who could have, and that was Becky. Why did she have to lie and slander me?!

My blood was boiling. In that moment, all I wanted was to see her face and ask her why she did this.

“Now I realize just how shameless you are. You hurt Becky and ruined my life!”

With a clenched jaw, he glared at me with a clenched jaw, "Get out of my house and sign the divorce papers! Otherwise, I’ll report you to the police. I mean it."

I couldn’t ask Kelly to take me in, either, since she was already doing so much for me. She offered me her couch, but I couldn’t let her be that kind of burde

When I next woke up, a blank white ceiling came into my view. In the periphery, I noticed a plastic tube hanging from a rod, quickly recognising that it was an intravenous drip set. A constant beeping of a machine interrupted my thoughts, grabbing my attention. Slowly, the smell of sanitizer filled my nostrils, and it didn’t take me long to recognize where I was. At a hospital. I blinked my eyes to clear my view and tried to move my hand. A sharp pain shot up my forearm, making me realize that there was a needle inserted there. As I looked down, I noticed a cannula inserted into my hand, slowly infusing me with fluids. I then felt a gentle touch on my forearm, making me look up at once. It was Kelly. I frowned at her. “Kelly?” I said. I quickly realized that my voice was groggy, so I cleared my throat. “What are you doing here?” “You recognize me?” She said in relief, “Good, we haven’t completely lost you then.”“What?” I said, “What happened to me?” “Well, stress happened.” She

When it was finally time for discharge, Kelly had an emergency. “There’s an important meeting I need to attend, Cassie.” She said, “Do you think you’ll manage on your own with Enzo?” By this point, all the essential paperwork had been taken care of and my IV line was removed. I was prescribed oral medication for the next few days, and there was absolutely nothing to worry about. However, as part of the protocol, I had given some blood tests and we were awaiting the results of those. In the meanwhile, Enzo spoke to me about my relationship with Calvin and on what basis he was filing for the divorce. After spending a couple of hours with him, I realized that he was genuinely good at his job and hiring him would help me get a fair share of bargain during the divorce proceedings. He also managed to help me ease into the conversation very quickly, and before I realized, I was opening up to him about a lot of things. Thanks to Kelly, I managed to develop a healthy acquaintance with him i

Angst filled me at once as I looked at the gun. My first instinct was to run or flee from the place, but somehow I remained rooted in my place. I was perplexed and astonished, so much so that my brain just froze, no primitive protective reflexes kicking in. Before I could do anything, I felt the sound of metal clinking and suddenly, my hands were taken behind me and my wrists were locked. It was then that I realized that I was handcuffed. Fighting against the metal confines, I finally broke out of my trance and looked at the police officers in horror. “What's the meaning of this?” I said, “Get me out of these!” “Ma’am, I suggest that you cooperate with us and come to the police station.” One of the older gentlemen said, giving me a nasty look. “No!” I yelled, “Why am I arrested? I didn’t do anything!” “Ma’am, you’re booked under the charge of attempted murder. We have received a complaint that you attempted to kill Miss Becky Reeds. The complaint came from your own husband, so w

The old officer reluctantly got up from his seat, murmuring something to myself in annoyance. Shoving the recording device into his pocket, he left the room and banged it shut. I heaved a sigh of relief at departure, my heart finally calming down. Thank God Enzo was here. I would not have been able to handle this myself. It came as such a shock to me as I’d never imagined that Calvin could go to such an extent to punish me. In retrospect, I realized that my encounter with Becky and him in the hospital could have been the cause for all of this. He looked visibly angry with my words and actions, and I could only imagine all the lies she fed him after I’d left. Driven by anger, he might have reported me to the police, seeking some form of revenge from me. There was a knock on the door right then, and it opened shortly after. I instantly sank back in my seat as Enzo walked in, shutting the door behind him. I could feel the grimace that was forming on my face as he took a seat in front o

Calvin’s POV Just as my car pulled into my porch, I got a phone call. My lips pursed when I read that it was none other than Kelly, Cassie’s best friend. Leaving a grunt, I sat unmoving in my spot, contemplating if I should take the call or not. Before I could make up my mind, the call disconnected, and I let out a sigh of relief. “Something the matter, sir?” said Gavin, my chauffeur, noticing that I was not getting out of the car despite reaching home. “Nothing.” I said, snapping out of my thoughts. As I opened the door and got down, my phone started buzzing again with the same phone call. Seeing that there was little use in dodging her calls, I finally picked it up. “Hello?” I said, staring at the dark night sky. It was pretty late in the night, way beyond midnight, so I hoped that she was calling for a good reason at this ungodly hour. “What is wrong with you?” She demanded at once, taking me aback. “Excuse me?” I said, frowning to myself whilst waving a hand of dismissal to

Cassie’s POVAs we pulled up in front of my parents' house, a wave of nostalgia hit me. It was right in the center of the city, yet it felt like a peaceful world of its own, far removed from the noise and chaos outside. It was my little escape. Cassie's POV “Replay the video.” Said the judge, failing to believe his own eyes. I couldn’t blame him, for what Enzo had produced as evidence in the courtroom was astounding. I was perplexed as to how he managed to get his hands on something like this. The video was recorded from the car, giving a view of the driver and the passenger. The driver seemed erratic and wobbly, sloppily driving on the empty road. After a few seconds, the driver suddenly turned the wheel to a side, ending up colliding the vehicle with the tree. Fumes erupted from the bonnet, and the airbags opened in the front seat. The driver was unconscious, their head on the airbags as blood dribbled down it. Right then, the passenger door opened and they got down. They came to stand in front of the car, revealing their faces. It was me.I approached the driver’s side to help Becky, but Becky wouldn’t budge. I then proceeded to pull her phone out of her pocket and call for help. I had no memory of this video. I wasn
