PROLOGUE
Rain is trying to hold his tears as he runs out to the garden. His back is to the rough wall of the gardener's hut made smooth by his constant leaning on it whenever he talks with Ami. Today, he felt numb and so heartbroken. His beloved dad just passed away leaving him in-charge of their company. He couldn't believe it, after happily celebrating his 11th birthday two weeks before.
Suddenly, he felt a comforting arm draped over his shoulders. He knew who it was before he turned his head. Ami just gave him her sweetest, most comforting smile. Ami in her usual tattered jeans and worn, mud-splattered shirt. She is their neighborhood's famous hoyden and his best friend.
"Sir Rainier is now in a safer, pain-free world," she said while squeezing his shoulders. Rain is so thankful that she never mentioned the tears silently running down his cheeks. That is when he knew his feelings for her run deeper than that of a friend.
"If you need someone to talk to budz, I am always here," Ami said. Rain nodded his head and just hugged her tight. "Oww, watch it Budz! You sure can crack a rib with your bear hug, " exclaimed Ami. "Come on Ami," replied Rain. "I don't wanna be a chatterbox, I need a comfy pillow." "A comfy pillow you say? Well, you're in luck, Betsy is just around here somewhere," Ami retorted, grabbing a chubby piglet and shoving it towards Rain's head. "Oi, you hoyden!" exclaimed Rain pushing the piglet away which started struggling and managing to topple them all on the muddy ground. They both started laughing so hard that Rain forgot why he was in the garden in the first place. Without realizing it, they grabbed each other's hand and started walking back to the grand house, hands interlocked like lovers.
CHAPTER 1 Rain’s Bride Search Party
Thou shall not kill! Bah, why not if it is for the best. Finally, my dim-wit of a competition is gone although my darling seems to be quite protective of that bastard son of his. Couldn’t she see, that boy she calls son will run her aground. Ahhh, I wonder how it feels to crush that boy, it will be splendid indeed, splendid!
"Are you sure about this outfit?"Mabel asked Ami.
"What is wrong with it, it's a dress for pete's sake!"
"Since when did you start wearing dresses?"
"Ahhhmm, this morning when I woke up", said Ami, smiling mischievously.
"Correct me if I'm wrong, but for as long as I can remember, you never wore dresses or skirts for that matter. Hello! Are you sure you are my cousin Ami?Ami, Ami, where are you!?" "Shush! You will alert the whole neighborhood with your hollering. Rain's mom is hosting a party and she wants him to find a wife. I want to surprise Rain and inspect the candidates his mom has chosen for him. Now, will you help me dress up and look pretty like you, my dear beauty pageant veteran cousin?"
Mabel couldn't believe her ears, her hoyden cousin in a dress, all made up? That sure is something. Far be it for her to deny her, Mabel proceeded to help Ami out of her usual garb.
"Do tell me you showered first, Ami," she reminded her cousin.
"Duh, seriously! What do you take me for, a guttersnipe? Of course I always shower. I may be a hoyden but I do not forget what my mom used to tell me, observe cleanliness all the time. My clothes might look old and tattered, but have you ever noticed me smelling putridly? I think not!" Ami stated strongly.
"Alright, alright!" cried Mabel. "Turn around so I can zip you up. Wow! How did I not notice it before? ", She asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Noticed what?", asked Ami in an alarmed tone. "Does it not fit me, do I look horrible, ugly?"
Mabel smiled knowingly.
"You look gorgeous, yours is a body shape most girls will die for, a petite hourglass body. Thank goodness you are always covered properly, otherwise I will have no chance at beauty pageants. With your pretty face and gorgeous body, you sure will give those girls a run for their money."
"Pish posh," cried Ami, ``I am too short, how can I be gorgeous?"
"That my dear," said Mabel “is easily remedied. I hope you don't plan on wearing sneakers to the party."
"Of course not. That reminds me, you have to guide me on how to walk these ridiculous heels. "
"Put them on and show me. “
“I never thought wearing heels is a skill," complained Ami.
“Hey you ladies, we’ll be late for the party!” hollered Ami’s uncle from the kitchen. “We won’t!” Ami hollered back. “Just give us a few minutes uncle. You and Ridger can go ahead, we’ll follow” chimed in Mabel.
“Okay girls, don’t be late, I will be standing with Mrs. Gonzales and his son in the receiving line, you know how important it is that your uncle, me, the best physician there is in this town is there with her. She is my dear friend, you know.” he hollered pompously.
“Right you are!” chorused the girls.
“Sheesh Ami, your uncle sure is full of himself.” declared Mabel. “Kalaslastog!”
“Shhh Cuz, he might hear you, “ cautioned Ami. “Anyway, let us practice, shall we?”
"Don't walk like a gorilla nor a duck, try getting the feel of it and glide," advised Mabel.
After a few falls, Ami managed to walk comfortably and confidently. Mabel gave a sigh of relief but was short lived when she saw Ami inhaling and exhaling quite noisily. "What's wrong Ami," she enquired with a puzzled look. "It's the party, it will start soon and you have not made me up yet, " cried Ami. Mabel looked at her cousin's smooth and glowing face and said, "You do not need a lot of makeup. You only need some powder on your face, some tweaking of your eyebrows and a dash of lipstick and then you are done. I say, ``Am I invited too?"
"Of course you are, you silly goose!" Ami blurted. Why do you think there is an extra dress on my bed?" Come on let us hurry, I do not want to be late. Am so nervous, I hope I won't make a mess."
After almost an hour of primping, the two ladies were ready. As they were ascending Gonzales' grand manor, most of the people were guessing who the beautiful woman was beside Mabel Abelanco, the previous year’s city muse; the cousins share the same Benguet complexion; fair that turns rosy when touched with the warmth of sunshine. Indeed with her sparkling mini black dress, Ami was a sight to behold. She has a pair of what people call Tsinita hazel eyes, eyes that turn to slits when she laughs. She was walking with elegance and grace, not a trace of her slouchy demeanor in her usual rags she calls clothes.
Inside, although Rain was jittery, he still looked marvelous in his suit. Although his mom is fair-skinned, he took after his father’s lowland relatives’ light ebony complexion. He also tends to favor outdoor activities thus tanning him further. His facial features can rival those of television and movie hunks. Although he attracts a lot of ladies’ attention, he only has eyes for his best friend. He doesn't know if Ami will be coming as his mom said, she invited all eligible ladies. Ami counts as a lady, does she not? Lady or gentleman? "I sure hope she finds a dress to wear, doesn't matter if it is branded or not. What matters is that she comes." Beside him his mom raised a quizzical eyebrow. "Were you saying something, son?", she asked. Ronnie, Ami’s uncle, was already there assisting the Gonzales’ in welcoming guests. “I think my gorgeous nieces caught your son’s attention, my dear, '' he replied to Mrs. Gonzales’ question.
Rain was about to answer when something, or someone got his attention. He didn't even hear his mom exclaim, "Well, I'll be damned!" Ronnie masked his surprised laughter at the swearing with a loud cough.
The cousins moved about the big hall that served as a ballroom for the party. It looked like a float of cut flowers from the municipality nearby, La Trinidad. The balustrades were all aglitter with all the led lights used as decorations, add to that the rarely used gigantic crystal rain chandelier switched on in all its glory; no wonder everyone can see everyone clearly. It just gives the hall a fairytale look without a wicked witch and a Cinderella. The hallway cum ballroom is also decorated with Rain and Ami’s paintings from when they were in high school. Mrs. Gonzales had them framed and displayed in their massive hallway. She also preferred local artists thus she has a solar drawing of her family by Jordan Mang-osan. As Ami was having a great time conversing with acquaintances who didn’t recognize her. Rain couldn’t take his eyes off her. “What a transformation!”, he thought out loud. Mrs. Gonzales heard him and she smiled to herself. Her plan seems to be working. It is now up to Rain and Ami how things will go from there. She knew there was chemistry or was it physics between the two as soon as she saw them nineteen years ago. She is not a manipulative mom unlike most of her peers. She does need to do some shoving so the two children she adored through the years will realize they are meant to be. It was then she noticed her son scowling and not so quietly swearing.
“Is something the matter, my boy?”, she asked. “Your stares can burn through peoples’ heads, you know.”
”Oh, hi mom”, Rain responded.
“It is just that a silly woman or man or whatever over there is attracting a lot of attention”, he complained.
”Careful, boy, that is my niece you are referring to,” cautioned Ronnie. Then Mrs. Gonzales seconded with “And that bothers you, because? It is not like you and she are couples or should I say, more than friends.”
“That’s just it, mom. She is my best friend and I do not like her parading herself in that barely there dress! I should go and talk some sense into her.”, he exclaimed.
“Someone’s jealous.”, his mom teased.
”Very, very jealous.” rejoined Ronnie.
“Am not!”At the pairs’ raised eyebrows, he admitted “Oh very well, I am!”
“So why don’t you tell her your feelings?”, Mrs. Gonzales asked. “Maybe tonight, I might. If you would just excuse me, mom, uncle?” Rain rushed to say.
“Go ahead, son. But remember, she is our gardener’s daughter, not a rich girl.” Mrs. Gonzales mischievously told him, the wheels in her head turning.
“I know, I know”, Rain said unhappily all the while trying to work out how to tell his best friend his true feelings. He was stopped midway by two guys who asked him to introduce them to Ami.
“As she seems to be a special guest of yours, why don’t you introduce us?” they implored. Rain looked at them askance.
” Like hell I would”, he snapped. Before they can ask him again, out of the corner of his eye, he saw the object of their attention move towards the back door of the manor. Without even saying bye to the annoying men, he hurriedly went after Ami.
Ami felt so tired because of her heels. If only she can dash home and change into her usual garb,
“This isn’t a very good idea”, she muttered aloud. She was busy pondering how to continue with her farce of a lady.
“This dress is so short and clingy, these heels are too uncomfortable!”, she uttered vehemently. “I couldn’t agree more”, piped in Rain. Ami was startled, when she whirled around, she cried, “Oh it’s you! Bloody hell Budz, what were you thinking about stalking me like that!”
“Tsk, tsk Ami, watch your language. It does not suit your appearance tonight. Can we move somewhere more private?”Rain intoned.
“Is this not private enough?”asked Ami, raising her brows.
“This is the back door entrance, Ami. Let us go to our treehouse HQ and talk. There will only be me and you”, requested Rain.
“You are acting strangely, Rain. This is just me, Ami, your best friend, remember?Hello Rain, are you there?” she said, poking him on the chest.
Rain responded by capturing her hand and pulling her towards the treehouse.
“Wait !” Ami exclaimed. “What’s wrong?”
”I will tell you as soon as we reach our HQ”
“Hold on, “ Ami cried, taking off her heels and running barefoot towards the treehouse.
Rain suddenly stopped and scooped her up like a little girl.
“What the hell!” spluttered Ami. “Put me down, I can walk.
“You’re too slow,” said Rain, not putting her down. “What I want to say can’t wait.”
Ami wriggled in his arms so he was forced to put her down not so gently. Ami stumbled and landed awkwardly on her bum.
“Oh, I’m so sorry Ami”, apologized Rain. “What in the world is wrong with you?”, she asked. “First, your mom sent me this ridiculous dress and now here you are acting like a dimwit.Have you chosen your bride, is that it?”
Rain shook his head and was about to blurt out his feelings when they heard his mom calling.
“Mom, really?” Shouted Rain.
“Rainaldo Lyssander Gonzales!” exclaimed Ami.”Is that the proper way of talking to your elders, your mother much less?
Rain got irritated because firstly, he was not able to say what he wanted to say, secondly, his mom knew why he was with Ami.
“Oh forget it! Just wanted to say how beautiful you are tonight but I do not approve of that dress.”
“Oh at least we agree on that!” Ami voiced out in equal intensity.
Rain slapped his forehead in dismay. He felt so trapped in this bride search that he can’t even profess his love to his best friend. Deflated, he just grabbed Ami by the shoulders and kissed her passionately on the lips before he let her go and said, “Yes, I found my bride!” You will get to meet her tomorrow. “
Ami was so stunned by his actions that what she heard was “Yes, I found my bride and I will announce it to be you tomorrow.” Either that or she just imbibed a lot of tapey( Igorot rice wine ) coupled with some of her favorite fermented cassava or more popularly known as binubudan in the vernacular. Either way instead of being upset at being so passionately kissed by her playboy best friend, she felt like she was on cloud 9. For sure, she’ll come prepared tomorrow morning and try to be as pretty as she was tonight.
My darling is planning something, I just can feel it. When she and that bonehead got married, I got the same feeling. She did not learn anything at all, now that dratted girl is proving to be as dimwitted as her parents were. Enjoyed the kiss, did she? This is proving to be more fun than I expected. Wait till tomorrow, you silly girl.
The morning after the party was one of gloomy and unhappy events. Ami went to the manor wearing a second dress that week thinking she was Rain’s bride-to-be. Rain’s kiss is still fresh on her mind and lips. It felt like he branded her with his lips. Her hand was on the doorknob when she heard a car turning up the massive U-shaped driveway. As she turned around, she saw Rain helping down a beautiful merchant’s daughter known in the neighborhood as the local flirt. She couldn’t believe her eyes. She was even more dismayed when Mrs. Gonzales hailed them from the terrace overhead. Obviously none of them saw her. Ami was so crestfallen that she ran towards the back of the manor in the direction of the gardener’s house given to them by the Gonzales’. In her distress, she did not stop to think and rationalize what happened. She passed by her uncle happily nursing his favorite cup of Benguet coffee. As soon as she got inside, she locked herself in her r
“Who would have known that one of my heart’s wishes will come true today,”Mabel happily hugged Ami while they were waiting to board their flight. “Boohoo,” Ami laughingly responded but Mabel noticed her cousin’s lifeless eyes. She just kept it to herself and tried to cheer her up. Don’t worry, Ali, one of my employers’ sons will be there to help you forget...uhm… just forget.”,Mabel teased her. Ami’s eyes clouded over but she bravely pushed the emotion back and said gaily,“Hah, who needs forgetting? I will not waste my energy crying over someone… or something.”“Aptly said Ma’am”, a handsome American said over his shoulder. Mabel and Ami looked at each other and laughed.“ What is so funny
Across the miles, Mrs. Gonzales and son are busy preparing for the worst as they once again welcomed the Santiagos into their home. Fiona as always is as beautiful as ever in her pink suit while her father looked boring as usual. He rarely smiles unless they are talking about money, people don’t only describe him as boring but money-greedy as well. Well, today he is all smiles as he clapped Rain on the back saying “Well, my boy, let us proceed with this engagement then, shall we?” Rain winced as if he had been punched in the gut. He looked to his mom for help. “Come Barry, let us leave the children for a while. Let us give them time to talk,” she said motioning for Barry to go with her. “My son and I are looking into a business venture and I value your opinion.” Rain rolled his eyes upon hearing this, nonetheless, he smiled. Mrs. Gonzales and Barry were about to go to the adjoining verandah when Ronnie walked
The next day, Rain woke with a hang-over. It didn’t help that his cousins were standing by the open door sneering at him.”At last, loverboy awakes, “ teased Robert in a loud voice but not loud enough to be heard by their mom who was busy preparing a fresh coffee for him. “What do you want?” asked Rain, squinting at the two brothers. “Not even a thank you!.” said Jerry obviously enjoying Rain’s predicament. “Don’t you remember anything yesterday, “ he laughingly asked. “Drat you!” muttered Rain. You know perfectly well that unlike you or your sister, I can’t remember anything once I’m under the influence of alcohol. Suddenly his aunt appeared and shoved the brothers aside. “Happy birthday Ambot!” she cheerfully greeted him. Rain sat up suddenly and felt dizzy. “Ay sinalbag!,”
Contrary to Rain’s belief, Ami did remember him on their birthday. She also saw an i*******m post but she ignored it telling herself maybe it is a one-off fling of Rain’s like in the past. She was busy typing an email required by her employer when Mabel barged into her room with a loud “Happy Birthday!” She was followed by Madam Mariam, Sir Abdullah, Ali and Mansour and their sister. “Since your planned trip to Ferrari World did not push through because of my emergency meeting, I am giving you this day as a gift. “ Madam Mariam uttered. “Ali or Mansour is just too happy to escort you ladies.” Ami looked to Ali who winked at her and she just rolled her eyes to hide her blush. In all the six months that she has been with them, Mansour felt like a brother to her except Ali who seems to know her more and feels something far different from that of a brother.Despite the awkwardness she feels in his presence, A
The day after her birthday proved to be a very tiring day for Ami. First, she had to travel to Dubai with Madam for a business meeting with one of the largest clothes retail shop in the middle east. After the meeting, they went to Al Ain for a business lunch with the Sheikha’s mother. By the time they got back to Abu Dhabi, she was drained but she still has to send emails to the family’s business partners, failing once again to notice the cc’d individuals. Belatedly though, she had a suspicious feeling in her gut that made her look into her sent emails. There, why is it that she didn’t notice it before? C.Gonzales@rlg.com. “I don’t believe it!, she spluttered. All the while I have been communicating with them.” “Nooo,” she said over and over even when she was called to dinner that evening. She was so distracted that she ne
A month has passed since Rain and Ami’s birthday and still no word from her. Perhaps she had forgotten about him. Just like the previous month he immersed himself in overseeing their businesses,It’s about time he pulled his weight and lessen the burden on his mom’s shoulders. He was busy reading an email when his phone rang. Without looking, he just swiped the off button. In a few minutes, his aunt came all flushed from obviously running up the steps to see him. He still can’t understand why she wouldn’t just use the elevator to make her life easier. '`Rainaldo Lyssander!”, she admonished. “Rain got startled and leapt up from his swivel chair and looked at her with guilt on his face. '`Yes Auntie?”, he asked apologetically, giving her his most adorable expression. Obviously it didn’t work because she scowled at him and crossed her arms across her chest. Oh no, this is not going to be a normal conversation, he thought to himself. Without any preamble,
As it happens, Jerry forgot to remind Magnolia to delete her post of her and Rain and since one of Magnolia’s friends is connected to Ami’s social media account, she saw the photos and the captions. She was busy browsing through her FB account when she caught sight of the post on her friend’s timeline. There was a strong pang in her chest that she couldn’t name but made her sad and gloomy. It was her day off but since the Al Fahezi residence is far from the city center, she just stayed in her room. She couldn’t understand why seeing the post made her emotional. She was never this emotional back home. Maybe she is just homesick, she told herself. That’s probably it. Missing all those glorious greens on rolling hills, her neighbors, oh not that specific neighbor, she tried to tell herself, oh well him too. She was about to take a nap when there was a knock on her door. “Shuhada, who is it?! She shouted. Nobody i
Their church wedding was attended by the Sheikh and his wife and also some other friends including Devlin and Mabel. They all flew to the Philippines six months after Rain and Ami married at the Philippine embassy in the UAE. Even Ali and Zaynah were there to witness Rain and Ami’s second marriage vows to each other. They had to endure two nights without intimacy though as per church dictates. Ami did not mind because she is finally living her dreams, getting married in the church with friends and family. She wished her parents and uncle were still alive but she knew they were out there somewhere watching over her. She also knows Rain’s father is watching over his son. Rain has been a wonderful, loving and considerate husband. He has been spoiling Ami over the last six months. Ami started working as the Directress of the new Thamiyn Nursery while Eliza took over as the Sheikha’s new PA. Ami thought Mansour was taken with Fiona when he visited the Philippines but when he met Eliza, ther
Rain’s 1 week leave did not give him more time to spend with Ami as he had been busy contacting his mother for the documents they needed at the embassy. He and Ami just connected via video chat in the evenings before they both go to sleep. He wanted to go to Al Reef and see her personally but he knew Ami has a lot to do before she finally leaves the Sheikha’s employ and lives with him. That is the consolation he kept looking forward to. “My darling Ami, how was your day? I missed you terribly today.” He touched the screen like he could touch her. “I miss you too, my love. Hey, can we use that to address each other? “Ami gave him her most adorable puppy eyes. “Sure, my love. I like that, no I love you, my love. This separation is drivi
Before they left the apartelle, Rain and Ami went to see his Assistant Manager. Ami waited patiently on one of the couches in the waiting lounge of the apartelle but not missing the furtive glances thrown her way by Dana, the receptionist who slept in the Flat before. Ami ignored her, she was just so happy and content that finally, a man saw her true self, and her best friend nonetheless. After 45 minutes and two coffees later, Rain emerged and ignoring Dana went straight to a beaming Ami and kissed her much to the receptionist’s surprise. Ami couldn’t stop blushing. Rain grinned at the receptionist and announced, “You should be congratulating us Dana, this lovely lady, my best friend for a long, long time, finally ended my agony and accepted my love and proposal!” Dana was stupefied. Many of the single female staff will be disappointed but she liked Ami so s
Six months after Rain arrived in the UAE, he and Ami had developed a routine. True to his word, Ami was not allowed to visit him in his flat unless accompanied by Mabel or Mansour. During the UAE National Day holidays in December, Rain had no chance to have a day off. They had a lot of guests and even his accommodation was given up for an elderly couple who came to see the fireworks in Abu Dhabi Corniche. Since their apartelle is near the Corniche, it was fully packed. Rain slept in his office for a week and then came the Christmas holidays and New Year. He discovered how true it is that when you are an OFW, you do not have the luxury to enjoy the festivities. Since he and Ami were busy the whole month of December, they just sent their gifts to each other via courier although Rain has been sending Ami bouquets of Roses and chocolates. After that day she gave him permission to court her.
Wanting to get back to normalcy as much as possible and not dwell on the painful past, Ami threw herself enthusiastically into her work. The Sheikha even commented that Ami was working with a vengeance. Her vivacity doubled or tripled thus attracting more males than Rain would have liked. One of the Sheikha’s clients even attempted to flirt with her, but Ami ignored him. She introduced the guy to another colleague who wants to flirt shamelessly and Ami let them. She just reminded the girl sternly to be very careful and mindful of her actions because she still works for the Al Fahezis. Though the colleague disliked Ami because of her close association with their employers, she heeded her. Ami couldn’t care less if the girl liked her or not. She is one of those people who think they are above others and she has zero tolerance for them but she tries to be very civil. R
Although Ami urged Mansour to go ahead to the UAE, he refused and told her she needed all the friends she had. Mabel wanted to go home to be with her but she couldn’t because she was covering as the Sheikha’s PA in Ami’s stead. The funeral had been a hectic week, after her uncle’s burial, her uncle’s lawyer came and gave Ami her uncle’s last will and testament. She was shocked because she did not know, her uncle actually has a property in the city proper and she was always frequenting it whenever she went downtown. It is now hers and technically she does not need to go back to the UAE to work some more. She has her dream property but she still wanted something that is really hers. Although overwhelmed with this gift, she thanked the lawyer. As soon as the lawyer left, she sought out Mrs. Gonzales and Rain. They were in the manor’s huge balcony where Mrs. Gonza
As soon as the door was opened, Robert and Jerry simultaneously hugged Ami, lifting her off the floor as they did so. Mansour waited until the brothers put her down, he opened his arms inviting Ami into his embrace. Ami hugged him briefly and before another tear fell down, she let go. “Thank you so much guys for being here but I have to go to town to find out more and to arrange for my uncle’s body for a burial.” “Come here, Ambet.” Robert said, patting the sofa. When Ami was seated, he said, “I have already gone to the facility and here is the medical report.” Ami stared at the piece of paper and then before she could change her mind, took it. It said that her uncle died from cardiac arrest from cancer complications..
“Ohh Ami, what happened to you? You were never like this, what happened to you? Ohh my precious, precious girl, your mother will turn in her grave if she sees you now. “ Mrs. Gonzales gathered Ami in her arms. Ami was motionless and emotionless. "Rain! Come quick. " Just like that, Ami snapped out of her stupor. "Auntie Claudia, I am fine. Please do not worry, I just spaced out a bit. I do that every once in a while to calm myself. It is like a meditation of some sort, meditation a la Ami.” “Are you sure? For a while there, you almost ga
“Relax Mansour, Ami decided to stay at her cottage tonight so she could look after her uncle. She requested that someone bring her food so I am just about to go.” “May I come? You know I am a spy for someone, remember?” Mansour grinned at Rain’s sour look. Rain couldn’t do anything but nod. “Sorry guys, I need to feed that cat over there. You know how she is if she gets hungry, becomes a tigress.” They all laughed at this even Mansour as he too knew about Ami’s appetite. Both Rain and Mansour walked to Ami’s cottage. “This is a cute cottage.” commented Mansour. “It is more beautiful in the daytime, tomorrow, we can show you around if you like unless you want to continue exploring the city.”
