Across the miles, Mrs. Gonzales and son are busy preparing for the worst as they once again welcomed the Santiagos into their home. Fiona as always is as beautiful as ever in her pink suit while her father looked boring as usual. He rarely smiles unless they are talking about money, people don’t only describe him as boring but money-greedy as well. Well, today he is all smiles as he clapped Rain on the back saying “Well, my boy, let us proceed with this engagement then, shall we?” Rain winced as if he had been punched in the gut. He looked to his mom for help. “Come Barry, let us leave the children for a while. Let us give them time to talk,” she said motioning for Barry to go with her. “My son and I are looking into a business venture and I value your opinion.” Rain rolled his eyes upon hearing this, nonetheless, he smiled. Mrs. Gonzales and Barry were about to go to the adjoining verandah when Ronnie walked in. “Ohh there you are, Ronnie,” Mrs. Gonzales gushed. Thank goodness you were able to come upon such short notice. “I would not miss it for the world, '' Ronnie answered. Rain didn’t miss the scowl on Barry’s face but he knew his mom could pull this through. Trust his mom to come up with perfect excuses. Fiona felt there is something more to this than what she expected. Suddenly she wasn’t feeling so flirty, she felt something akin to doom. “Rain, what is happening?” she asked wearily. They were still standing in the middle of the hall where the party happened some time ago.
“I am so sorry,” said Rain. “May I escort you to the sofa? What I am going to say will take some time and as much as it makes me feel like a villain, I am afraid I would be, to you and to your father and I am begging you to please forgive me and understand.”
Fiona looked at him helplessly and was feeling drained already.
“There will be no engagement party, will there?”she asked tonelessly as she sat on the sofa. Rain remained standing and was finding it difficult to talk. Fiona indicated the chair opposite and Rain sat down gingerly. “Listen Fiona, I didn't mean to cause you and your family any harm, all I wanted was to find my perfect bride and I thought I did. No offense, you are a beautiful woman and very rich as well, any other man will be happy to marry you. It just so happened that I was so foolish and cowardly during my party that I didn't even have the courage to tell the woman of my feelings. My mom and I know that it is not customary for us to have dowries but in light of everything that happened, we are willing to invest in your father’s businesses.”
Upon hearing this, Fiona got up indignantly and she was trying so hard not to cry and stamp her feet as was her usual whenever she was having tantrums. She contented herself with slapping Rain on the face,
“You arrogant and beastly creature!” she exclaimed. “How dare you use me, me Fiona, the famous muse of the city for your own selfish motives!”
Rain was surprised by her outburst that he could do nothing but stare at her wide-mouthed.
“Please Fiona, calm down.” was all he managed to say.
Fiona walked out on him and screamed at the top of her voice,
“Papa!, come down at once. We are going home.”
Upon hearing his daughter’s screams, Barry hurriedly descended the stairs from where he was having coffee with Mrs. Gonzales and Ronnie on the terrace. “What happened?” he glared at Rain. Fiona grabbed him by the arm and pulled her father away from Rain. “Remember, this never happened,” she threatened Rain. “An engagement will still appear on the papers and then I will let everyone know how you tarnished my name.”
“But of course sweetheart,” intoned her father.
Mrs. Gonzales and Rain could only stare helplessly as Fiona dragged her father away and shoved him towards the passenger seat of their car. Ronnie came up behind Mrs. Gonzales and Rain and placed a reassuring hand on Rain’s shoulder.
“Everything will be alright,” he told mother and son.
They all watched as Fiona got in their car, stepped on the accelerator and off they went, nearly running over a surprised passer-by.
A week after, Fiona made her promise true. Their engagement appeared on the local papers and then a day after, she issued a statement saying she dumped Rain because he was a maniac. Since she is as popular as Rain and seemed like she was victimized, Rain received hate emails. Rain ignored them because he acknowledged the truth. Their lawyers wanted to file a case against her but Rain stopped them saying it was his fault that this happened. As was his usual routine whenever he was troubled, he went to the old gardener’s house and sat on the swing where Ami always played when they were little. He misses his bestfriend so much but most of all he missed her comforting touch and smile. “Why oh why did I not tell you?” he moaned aloud. He wondered if Ami would remember him on the day of their birthdays. He left the swing sadly and went out. Maybe he could find a cheerful companion in the city proper. He didn’t even say bye to his mom who was shaking her head as she watched him from the deserted terrace. “God bless you.” she said even if the car is slowly disappearing out of sight. As always, Ronnie was there beside her, reassuring her and keeping her calm, but she knew from experience that her son might not come home for a few days so she called her sister in the city, Mabel’s mom. “Hello ading,” she answered her phone. “Hi manang, do you mind watching over Rain while he is in the city?” “Have you tried talking to him calmly, “ Antonia asked.“He never listens, that one. How I miss his dad. If only Rainier was here,” she said unhappily, wiping a tear from her face.
“There, there,” said Ronnie, I am here and I will take care of you.”
Her sister knew that once Claudia is in a melancholic mood, she won’t stop talking and she had enough of that. She also heard Ronnie so she promised
“Alright, alright ading, I will see to it,” before she hung up.
“Robert!” she yelled to her eldest. Looks like you have to play babysitter again. That cousin of yours is somewhere in the city probably drowning himself in gin or whatever filthy drink you boys are obsessed with.
“Which cousin?”yelled back Robert.
“Ambot!’, she responded. Ambot is her pet name for Rain. She knew too that her favorite nephew is nursing a lonely heart. She said it wasn’t broken because he was not jilted in the first place. People are brokenhearted only if they expressed their love and it was not returned, is it not?
“Oh hoo, lover boy in town? Surprise, surprise!” he mocked.
Just then, someone stormed in and brought an alcoholic smell into the house. Jerry, Robert’s and Mabel’s brother was maneuvering an obviously heavily inebriated Rain into one of their sofas.
“Mama!” Robert shouted. “Loverboy is here!”
Antonia came down the stairs in a not so graceful gait and fell to her knees beside Rain’s drunk body.
“Oh my Balong!”she purred, smoothing Rain’s thick hair. “What have you done to yourself?”
“Isn’t it obvious?” Jerry sneered. He is drunk, even too drunk to recognize me when he let fly a fist at the folk house.
“ I wish I had seen that,” teased Robert. “Did he manage to get you?”
“Are you blind complained Jerry. “Can’t you see my eye? Good thing he wasn’t sober, else, he will be the one bringing me in here instead of this.” Jerry cried.
“Call your aunt,” their mom said.
“Better yet, I will call her. I do not trust you boys when your cousin is like this.”
She called her sister and after a few words of comfort, she was able to make Claudia feel at ease.
“What happened, exactly?” questioned Antonia to her son, sending him one of her tiger looks. Jerry was uncomfortable but after some glares, he told her everything.
“Apparently, Ambot met a girl who resembled Ami somewhat and thought it was she. Of course when he confronted said girl, she got offended and gave him quite a set down. It all spiralled out of control and he was about to trash the guy who was with the girl when I spotted them,” Jerry said with a straight face.
“There is more to this than that, isn’t there?” their mom raised a quizzical eyebrow at Jerry who suddenly reddened.
“Aha! I thought so”, replied their mom. She then directed them to bring their cousin to the spare bedroom upstairs where she followed with warm water, vinegar and coffee. After fussing over their cousin, she left the room and closed the door gently. “Don’t you dare disturb him,” she reminded her sons.
“As if!”, they recited in unison but secretly hid their malicious smiles.
Outside, it started raining again as if sensing Rain’s turmoil. Since their cousin isn’t conscious to be pranked, the brothers left him and proceeded to raid the kitchen which was smelling of pinikpikan for dinner. They waited for their mother and Robert’s wife and children and said grace before everybody started to enjoy the dinner. In Green Valley, Mrs. Gonzales was having dinner with Ronnie who was trying to cheer her up by exchanging anecdotes with her about Ami and Rain when they were still children.
“How time flies,” Mrs. Gonzales started. “Wasn’t it only yesterday when Ami had a boxing match with Rain. I remember being horrified at how swollen Ami’s eye was and how unrepentant Rain was. Back then, Rain thought of her as another boy because of how she moves and talks and punches. I think he only realized she was a girl in their teens.”
“I quite agree,” replied Ronnie. “Once, I tried to entice her with a doll but what did she do? She got a pair of scissors and started cutting the doll’s hair short and dressing her in a shirt and pants. But when I gifted her and Ridger toy cars, she was ecstatic and she jumped up and down. I wonder how many more toy cars she will bring with her when she decides to come back. I just hope she is happy in the UAE like you told me. She is like a daughter to me and this sounds biased but I love her more than I do my son, but you know he is not really mine, don’t you? He is my wife’s son but I accepted him as mine. There is something about him though, I couldn’t quite put a finger to it. He sounds too good to be true, not that there is something I can complain about. He is generous enough to give me an allowance, although I told him I do not need it but then again, maybe he just wants to please me. Enough about these kids Claudia, you need to go to bed and stop worrying about your son. He is a big boy and he can take care of himself, besides, your sister and her sons are capable of watching over him. Give him a few days and he’ll be back to his old self. “
Thus saying, he helped Mrs. Gonzales to her feet and escorted her towards her room.
“Thank you so much Ronnie, I do not know how I can make it without you always by my side.” She gave him a gentle pat on the cheek and made her way to her bedroom.
“Nonsense my dear, you know I will always stay beside you. I will instruct Doris to lock the doors after me. Goodnight my sweet Claudia.” Ronnie affectionately said.
Ronnie trudged the short distance to Ami’s house and was surprised to see Ridger waiting for him.
“Hi Papang,” Ridger greeted. “I brought dinner with me, maybe we can share?”
Not wanting to disappoint him, Ronnie acquiesced and led him inside the house. “Come in balong, let us go to the kitchen and share what you brought.” He did not mention that he already dined with Mrs. Gonzales because he knows how cross Ridger becomes when he learns his father was spending time in the big house. Ridger hates the small house Ronnie and Ami are living in that is why he prefers to stay in the city where he can stay in his mom’s old place in Teacher’s Camp. They both tucked into the food Ridger brought.
“You can stay in my bedroom and I will just sleep on the sofa,”Ronnie told his son.
“Thank you Papang, by the way, where is Ami?” Ridger asked.
“Ami flew with Mabel to the UAE a couple of days ago after the party.” answered Ronnie.
Ridger’s eyes had a sparkle in them. Ronnie did not notice and just kept eating. Ridger masked his expression as he said in the saddest tone he could muster “Ohh, how can she leave you alone? I hope she will not be feeling homesick. Do you have her number?”
“She has not phoned me yet but you can always contact her on f******k or i*******m, right?” Ronnie replied.
“Oh yes, of course!” said Ridger in a very cheerful voice. Do you mind if I retire early, Papang? I am so tired and I need to go back to the city proper early tomorrow.
“Not at all, son. You go ahead and I will tidy up and retire too as I am tired as well, so many patients came in today. I wake you up as usual?” he asked.
“Yes please, Papang. Goodnight.” he muttered and went straight to his father’s room, not even bothering to help tidy up.
The next day, Rain woke with a hang-over. It didn’t help that his cousins were standing by the open door sneering at him.”At last, loverboy awakes, “ teased Robert in a loud voice but not loud enough to be heard by their mom who was busy preparing a fresh coffee for him. “What do you want?” asked Rain, squinting at the two brothers. “Not even a thank you!.” said Jerry obviously enjoying Rain’s predicament. “Don’t you remember anything yesterday, “ he laughingly asked. “Drat you!” muttered Rain. You know perfectly well that unlike you or your sister, I can’t remember anything once I’m under the influence of alcohol. Suddenly his aunt appeared and shoved the brothers aside. “Happy birthday Ambot!” she cheerfully greeted him. Rain sat up suddenly and felt dizzy. “Ay sinalbag!,”
Contrary to Rain’s belief, Ami did remember him on their birthday. She also saw an i*******m post but she ignored it telling herself maybe it is a one-off fling of Rain’s like in the past. She was busy typing an email required by her employer when Mabel barged into her room with a loud “Happy Birthday!” She was followed by Madam Mariam, Sir Abdullah, Ali and Mansour and their sister. “Since your planned trip to Ferrari World did not push through because of my emergency meeting, I am giving you this day as a gift. “ Madam Mariam uttered. “Ali or Mansour is just too happy to escort you ladies.” Ami looked to Ali who winked at her and she just rolled her eyes to hide her blush. In all the six months that she has been with them, Mansour felt like a brother to her except Ali who seems to know her more and feels something far different from that of a brother.Despite the awkwardness she feels in his presence, A
The day after her birthday proved to be a very tiring day for Ami. First, she had to travel to Dubai with Madam for a business meeting with one of the largest clothes retail shop in the middle east. After the meeting, they went to Al Ain for a business lunch with the Sheikha’s mother. By the time they got back to Abu Dhabi, she was drained but she still has to send emails to the family’s business partners, failing once again to notice the cc’d individuals. Belatedly though, she had a suspicious feeling in her gut that made her look into her sent emails. There, why is it that she didn’t notice it before? C.Gonzales@rlg.com. “I don’t believe it!, she spluttered. All the while I have been communicating with them.” “Nooo,” she said over and over even when she was called to dinner that evening. She was so distracted that she ne
A month has passed since Rain and Ami’s birthday and still no word from her. Perhaps she had forgotten about him. Just like the previous month he immersed himself in overseeing their businesses,It’s about time he pulled his weight and lessen the burden on his mom’s shoulders. He was busy reading an email when his phone rang. Without looking, he just swiped the off button. In a few minutes, his aunt came all flushed from obviously running up the steps to see him. He still can’t understand why she wouldn’t just use the elevator to make her life easier. '`Rainaldo Lyssander!”, she admonished. “Rain got startled and leapt up from his swivel chair and looked at her with guilt on his face. '`Yes Auntie?”, he asked apologetically, giving her his most adorable expression. Obviously it didn’t work because she scowled at him and crossed her arms across her chest. Oh no, this is not going to be a normal conversation, he thought to himself. Without any preamble,
As it happens, Jerry forgot to remind Magnolia to delete her post of her and Rain and since one of Magnolia’s friends is connected to Ami’s social media account, she saw the photos and the captions. She was busy browsing through her FB account when she caught sight of the post on her friend’s timeline. There was a strong pang in her chest that she couldn’t name but made her sad and gloomy. It was her day off but since the Al Fahezi residence is far from the city center, she just stayed in her room. She couldn’t understand why seeing the post made her emotional. She was never this emotional back home. Maybe she is just homesick, she told herself. That’s probably it. Missing all those glorious greens on rolling hills, her neighbors, oh not that specific neighbor, she tried to tell herself, oh well him too. She was about to take a nap when there was a knock on her door. “Shuhada, who is it?! She shouted. Nobody i
Before they boarded the ship, Ami and Mabel couldn’t help but gawk at the massive ship. For her part, Ami had only seen photos of it when she was in college. The Gonzales’ just purchased the ship and Rain was so proud that the first thing he did was show a photo of it to Ami. Of course over the years, the ship had undergone a makeover to modernize it. It had nearly cost the Gonzales’ their fortune. If not for Mrs. Gonzales’ business acumen, they could have gone bankrupt. Now gazing at it up close, it felt surreal for Ami. Her jaw dropped at the massive size but she at once remembered who she was with so as quickly as she could, she nudged Mabel on her side which earned her a glare. “Close your mouth,” ordered Ami. “Otherwise, we’ll embarrass ourselves and our employers..” “I just can’t believe it,” owned Mabel. “We are actually spending weeks in that, that big boat?” she asked,
“Why is he so solicitous of you?” he started. “Are you and him in a relationship? You seem so cozy with him, all the time. Or perhaps he really is your lover.” Ami was appalled at his attitude that she nearly raised her fist again before Rain caught it in his hand. “Firstly, you did not have a very friendly way of saying hi, secondly, you assumed a lot without even asking how I have been all these months. Are you sure you are my bff because I do not see him in you now!” cried Ami. All her anger and disappointment were starting to bubble on the surface that she had to inhale and exhale rapidly to compose herself. “All these months I wondered if you even thought of me at all because you did not even try to reach out. Mabel told me she messaged your aunt informing her of my whereabouts and that you know, but no. You were so busy with all your pretty girls, you forgot you have a bff. You think I do not know w
That morning, Rain woke up early despite getting a few hours of sleep. After assuring his mom that he’ll be fine he went down to the breakfast hall but this time accompanied by Eliza. He wanted to catch Ami and apologize for his actions the night before but having escorted Eliza down to breakfast ruined his plans. His early start rewarded him though because Ami came down to breakfast as well. Ami schooled her features when she saw Rain with Eliza. She knew for a fact that Eliza has had a big crush on Rain ever since they were in high school. She felt a pang of jealousy because of the way the two were reacting to each other. Rain seemed to be very accommodating, flashing Eliza a smile every now and then. Although she tried to avoid them, Rain kept blocking her path until she thought she’d have enough. Rain gently took one of her hands but when Ami flinched, Rain looked down and frowned when he saw the bandages on her fists. Ami was trying to tug
Their church wedding was attended by the Sheikh and his wife and also some other friends including Devlin and Mabel. They all flew to the Philippines six months after Rain and Ami married at the Philippine embassy in the UAE. Even Ali and Zaynah were there to witness Rain and Ami’s second marriage vows to each other. They had to endure two nights without intimacy though as per church dictates. Ami did not mind because she is finally living her dreams, getting married in the church with friends and family. She wished her parents and uncle were still alive but she knew they were out there somewhere watching over her. She also knows Rain’s father is watching over his son. Rain has been a wonderful, loving and considerate husband. He has been spoiling Ami over the last six months. Ami started working as the Directress of the new Thamiyn Nursery while Eliza took over as the Sheikha’s new PA. Ami thought Mansour was taken with Fiona when he visited the Philippines but when he met Eliza, ther
Rain’s 1 week leave did not give him more time to spend with Ami as he had been busy contacting his mother for the documents they needed at the embassy. He and Ami just connected via video chat in the evenings before they both go to sleep. He wanted to go to Al Reef and see her personally but he knew Ami has a lot to do before she finally leaves the Sheikha’s employ and lives with him. That is the consolation he kept looking forward to. “My darling Ami, how was your day? I missed you terribly today.” He touched the screen like he could touch her. “I miss you too, my love. Hey, can we use that to address each other? “Ami gave him her most adorable puppy eyes. “Sure, my love. I like that, no I love you, my love. This separation is drivi
Before they left the apartelle, Rain and Ami went to see his Assistant Manager. Ami waited patiently on one of the couches in the waiting lounge of the apartelle but not missing the furtive glances thrown her way by Dana, the receptionist who slept in the Flat before. Ami ignored her, she was just so happy and content that finally, a man saw her true self, and her best friend nonetheless. After 45 minutes and two coffees later, Rain emerged and ignoring Dana went straight to a beaming Ami and kissed her much to the receptionist’s surprise. Ami couldn’t stop blushing. Rain grinned at the receptionist and announced, “You should be congratulating us Dana, this lovely lady, my best friend for a long, long time, finally ended my agony and accepted my love and proposal!” Dana was stupefied. Many of the single female staff will be disappointed but she liked Ami so s
Six months after Rain arrived in the UAE, he and Ami had developed a routine. True to his word, Ami was not allowed to visit him in his flat unless accompanied by Mabel or Mansour. During the UAE National Day holidays in December, Rain had no chance to have a day off. They had a lot of guests and even his accommodation was given up for an elderly couple who came to see the fireworks in Abu Dhabi Corniche. Since their apartelle is near the Corniche, it was fully packed. Rain slept in his office for a week and then came the Christmas holidays and New Year. He discovered how true it is that when you are an OFW, you do not have the luxury to enjoy the festivities. Since he and Ami were busy the whole month of December, they just sent their gifts to each other via courier although Rain has been sending Ami bouquets of Roses and chocolates. After that day she gave him permission to court her.
Wanting to get back to normalcy as much as possible and not dwell on the painful past, Ami threw herself enthusiastically into her work. The Sheikha even commented that Ami was working with a vengeance. Her vivacity doubled or tripled thus attracting more males than Rain would have liked. One of the Sheikha’s clients even attempted to flirt with her, but Ami ignored him. She introduced the guy to another colleague who wants to flirt shamelessly and Ami let them. She just reminded the girl sternly to be very careful and mindful of her actions because she still works for the Al Fahezis. Though the colleague disliked Ami because of her close association with their employers, she heeded her. Ami couldn’t care less if the girl liked her or not. She is one of those people who think they are above others and she has zero tolerance for them but she tries to be very civil. R
Although Ami urged Mansour to go ahead to the UAE, he refused and told her she needed all the friends she had. Mabel wanted to go home to be with her but she couldn’t because she was covering as the Sheikha’s PA in Ami’s stead. The funeral had been a hectic week, after her uncle’s burial, her uncle’s lawyer came and gave Ami her uncle’s last will and testament. She was shocked because she did not know, her uncle actually has a property in the city proper and she was always frequenting it whenever she went downtown. It is now hers and technically she does not need to go back to the UAE to work some more. She has her dream property but she still wanted something that is really hers. Although overwhelmed with this gift, she thanked the lawyer. As soon as the lawyer left, she sought out Mrs. Gonzales and Rain. They were in the manor’s huge balcony where Mrs. Gonza
As soon as the door was opened, Robert and Jerry simultaneously hugged Ami, lifting her off the floor as they did so. Mansour waited until the brothers put her down, he opened his arms inviting Ami into his embrace. Ami hugged him briefly and before another tear fell down, she let go. “Thank you so much guys for being here but I have to go to town to find out more and to arrange for my uncle’s body for a burial.” “Come here, Ambet.” Robert said, patting the sofa. When Ami was seated, he said, “I have already gone to the facility and here is the medical report.” Ami stared at the piece of paper and then before she could change her mind, took it. It said that her uncle died from cardiac arrest from cancer complications..
“Ohh Ami, what happened to you? You were never like this, what happened to you? Ohh my precious, precious girl, your mother will turn in her grave if she sees you now. “ Mrs. Gonzales gathered Ami in her arms. Ami was motionless and emotionless. "Rain! Come quick. " Just like that, Ami snapped out of her stupor. "Auntie Claudia, I am fine. Please do not worry, I just spaced out a bit. I do that every once in a while to calm myself. It is like a meditation of some sort, meditation a la Ami.” “Are you sure? For a while there, you almost ga
“Relax Mansour, Ami decided to stay at her cottage tonight so she could look after her uncle. She requested that someone bring her food so I am just about to go.” “May I come? You know I am a spy for someone, remember?” Mansour grinned at Rain’s sour look. Rain couldn’t do anything but nod. “Sorry guys, I need to feed that cat over there. You know how she is if she gets hungry, becomes a tigress.” They all laughed at this even Mansour as he too knew about Ami’s appetite. Both Rain and Mansour walked to Ami’s cottage. “This is a cute cottage.” commented Mansour. “It is more beautiful in the daytime, tomorrow, we can show you around if you like unless you want to continue exploring the city.”
