Greggs' Residence

"Hey bestie" Tana half yelled when I finally picked up the phone. I had been so engrossed in my sketching that I totally did not hear the phone ring until the third time my ring tone filled the air. In my defense, the phone was tucked underneath my pillow and my phone's volume wasn't exactly at its loudest.
"Heyyy"I drawled, not with as much enthusiasm as she gave off. I was exhausted, lethargic, unmoving and she noticed.
"What's wrong?" She asks concernedly. I couldn't bring myself to explain that I had been trying to get a good sketch out, but they all ended up in the trash. I was not feelibg inspired, I was beginning to let my fears get to me and it was affecting my skills.
" I.." I started, after much reluctance, but she didn't let me finish.
"I'll be with t you in a minute, we're going out. No best friend of mine is going to get depressed, not on my watch!" She rolled all of that out so quickly, I could barely catch on to what she said. Tana hung up before I could decline her offer. I groaned as I got out of my seat. I had to dress up before she came to drag me out of the house looking like a hobo.
I wondered why she would leave her job just after noon to come take me out of my brooding state.
Perks of being self employed, I suppose.
Tana runs a modelling agency, she looked like a model herself but never participated in pageantry, she would never want to give up junk food, not for anything in the world.
I was in the middle of dressing up when my room door came open. Of course, who else would barge in without knocking? I stifled a grown just as I adjusted my green chiffon top tucked into black trousers. I turned around to glance at the creature seated on my bed. There she was, cute button nose, almond shaped hickory brown eyes, small pink lips that stood out against her very light complexion. She was clothed in a black sleeveless mini dress and a pair of nude heels. Now that was a major contrast to the slip on sandals I planned on wearing.
"Uhh... What are you wearing?" She beat me to it this time as she scrunched her nose up in disapproval.
"Uhh... I'm supposed to be asking you the same thing." I retorted. "Why are you dressed like we're heading to the club or something?, it's just one in the afternoon." I was confused, honestly.
"Madam, I'm just coming in from the office, what do you expect?" She asked rhetorically.
"That explains it,but why a mini dress for work?" I found myself asking.
"Well, I just felt like wearing it, so I did. And you know I don't go clubbing." She glared at me and continued. "But I have the dress and I have to wear it."She shrugged casually and I just shook my head with a wry smile on my face.
" Well..." I mimicked her pouty voice." You're not wearing that." I stated plainly, pointing at her and before she could protest..." Where are we going anyway?" I questioned.
"The mall."She replied, not looking up from her phone.
"The mall?" I asked, utterly shocked. I almost smacked her right there. I shook my head again, Tana had a way of making me do that whenever she was around.
"Come with me." I beckoned her and she gave me a puzzled look.
"We're changing this outfit." I pulled her with and took her to the mini walk in closet I had.
Tana has a more petite build, compared to mine. She was also a few inches taller though while I had more defined curve but I did have a few of her stuff which she had left behind whenever she slept over.
"I'm going to change out of this outfit only on one condition." She finally decided to concede after minutes of arguing back and forth.
"What is it?" I rolled my eyes, she was never one to back down without a fight.
"You're changing out of this too."She stated, eyeing my outfit like it was the strangest thing ever.
" What's wrong with my outfit?" I pouted this time around. I actually had to check myself in the mirror.
"That green top isn't doing it for me." She faked a gag. I gasped in mock horror.
"You're mean, but it's fine. I'll pick something else." I went for a white top with cute inscriptions and replaced the sandals with a pair of black converses.
Tana on the other hand, replaced her whole outfit with a pink polo top, white jeans and a pair of black sneakers she borrowed from me,at least we had the same shoe size.
We were out the door after thirty minutes of bickering over our outfits. I almost face palmed at the thought. She got to her vehicle before me, her Hyundai Azera sparkled under the sun. The red color always had me admiring it and even more its plush interiors. Tana loved this vehicle if hers a lot as she bought it with the proceeds from her business. It was a thing of pride, I wanted the kind of independence she had, I yearned for it.
"Alright, let's go." I said to yer, interrupting her phone fall. She just nodded, got into the car and started the engine, the phone still placed on her ear. She continued talking on the phone as she drove us out of the estate where I resided.
****
"Why did you sound so downcast over the phone?" Tana asked after we had settled in. We were currently seated in a food court munching on some snacks. I did not hesitate to tell her the reason and the response I got was the one question I dreaded the most at the time.
"Have you told them?" Her eyes narrowed and I involuntarily froze.
"Lola..." She tsked, fully aware I was too terrified to speak up to my parents about what I wanted for myself.
For years, Tana had been trying to get me to speak up on this issue, I just never did.
As usual, she lectured me for what seemed like hours. It was only a few minutes by the way.
"Talk to your siblings." She suggested for the thousandth time, she knew the outcome of such an attempt, I had told her many times over but she kept on suggesting it.
Here's a short take on the relationship between my siblings and I. We have something I'll call a very cordial relationship. We don't exactly fight, but we're never intricately involved with one another unlike many other families. Every sibling had their own lives to live and no one was allowed to interfere with the other's.
We're not exactly the affectionate kind of family so this shouldn't come we a surprise. My immediate elder and only sister turned out to be an exception but this started only a few years earlier.
Back to Tana, we finally left the mall after she made me swear on my favourite pair of shoes that I would do the needful. She dropped me off and I walked into the house only to be met by a surprise.
"Hey boo." I heard the very sweet, alluring and enticing voice of my equally sweet sister and I squealed. I rushed straight into her arms while she giggled. Oh! I missed the sweet sound. Meet my beautiful older sister, Laila Tolani Gregg, as I mentioned earlier, she's a corporate lawyer working for a private firm. My sister is indeed a beauty. In all honesty, I was surrounded by lots of beautiful people, make and female alike. We have great genes I tell you. Laila is more of a light skinned person than I am but she's a few shades darker than Tana and I'm proudly chocolate skinned. Something I got from my dad. My facial features though are more likely to my mum's, same as Laila's. "Why didn't tell me you were coming?" I questioned after breaking the hug. "And ruin the surprises? Surely you should know me better sis."She replied with a smug smile. Typical her. "Anyhow..." I drawled as we ascended the stairs."What did you get me?" I grinned. She gave me a blank stare in return and my
Chapter Four "Daddy" I called calmly. It was the weekend already, and I had to tell him my decision. He looked up from his laptop. I was sitting in front of him in the study, more like his home office. "Lola, what is it?"He asked coldly.I gulped, closed my eyes for a millisecond and answered."Daddy, I... came to tell you about ...my decision, concerning...the job offer" I stuttered. He gave me a stern look then concentrated on his laptop again, as if to tell me to continue with what I was saying."I'll take it" I finally said after much reluctance, I wondered why I was so terrified of him, he's my father for goodness sake! Dad had a way of making us fear him, even mum wasn't left out. There were times she tried to resist his daunting stance on matters, but she had never pulled it off successfully. Although mummy tried to act like she wasn't afraid
Chapter FiveWorking was indeed hectic. Tana and I couldn't interact often cause she was also very busy with her job.Okay... Confession. I totally envy that girl, her parents are so supportive and she even has her own place. Her parents did not even object to that in any way, read the course of her choice, her life seemed perfect, although she has her own issues. Okay that's enough about my bestie for now. Today's wahala is for Laila. I could not stop laughing when she stomped into my room. She was furious and I knew better than to open my mouth without her giving me the go ahead. Mr and Mrs Gregg were at it again, that's the only thing that makes her look so fierce, scary in fact. I gulped when she sat on my bed, still wondering if I should speak, when she finally spoke up."Your parents want me to get married." She said with an unusu
Chapter Six **********"Do I have to?" I whined when James called me out to give Tunji a tour of the premises. I was a nervous wreck around that guy. James gave me a skeptical look, and I stood up immediately. Mr James Ololade was a man of few words, he's a strict one. His stares were enough to throw you off balance. He didn't entertain tardiness or flops of any kind, especially because the department we worked in was very delicate - any mishaps and we're done for. He had huge responsibilities in his hands, so I wouldn't blame him for being such a killjoy in spite of him being a young bachelor. "I'll be on my way sir" I walked out of my office, a little bit flustered. I was going to see him again. I took the elevator again and headed straight for the CEO's office. Still nervous,
Chapter SevenIt was finally Saturday! Oh what a feeling! No work, just chores.. Ugh."Wait for it... In three, two, one.... ""Tolani!!,Titilola!!" Mum screamed our names simultaneously. The countdown was me waiting for that call along with Laila. Mummy couldn't sit with the fact that we did not have anything doing, as we had finished up our chores for the morning. For the record, it is typical of Nigerian mothers to dig up house chores at the slightest hint of inactivity from her children.Trust me it's exhausting to have her around."Coming mummy!" Laila yelled pulling me along with her, down the stairs.#Sister goals, I know right!"Ehen, it's good you're here" Mom said, "I just fixed an appointment with the person who'll design your dress, she said she'll be here or if she can't make i
Chapter eight I'm in deep trouble... I kept chanting to myself all through the ride. The silence throughout the drive from Aunt JoJo's place down to the house was deafening. I was even scared to breathe, I'm sure Laila was in the same situation. Yes, that's how intimidating my mom is. Once in a while she would mumble things we couldn't decipher. She was really pissed. Lola see your life! I fought the urge to face palm myself cause I didn't want any death glares from my mom. Finally the petrifying ride came to an end as she drove into the huge compound. I stepped out turning to face Laila, she gave a pitiful look,at that point I knew I had to be strong. Hardly had we gotten in the living room when mom's voice thundered "Titilola!"
Chapter Nine*****So... Before we knew it, we found ourselves at the Greggs' mansion. The place was getting really busy already.Wedding wahalaI groaned inside of me as I thought of all the teasing I would get, with everyone wanting me to get married. I was sure, they'd start asking for my boyfriend in fact.Typical of Nigerians to poke their noses into other people's business. No one ever asked Grey about marriage because he's a guy and according to them, He's just 29. Seriously though, that's unfair. He's free to have all the wild fun while I have to be pestered, almost on a daily basis about my relationship status.I'm just 24 nau!Tana's parents never put pressure on her for anything. But in my family it's the exact opposite, they coerced us into doing almost everything concerning our lives. Rebellion would be
Chapter Ten "Titilola, Tolani, Tana ooo!"Who's shouting like this now?Oh shoot! It was 9am! And all three of us were still snuggled up in bed. She would definitely have our heads on a plate, except for Laila though.Perks of being the bride."Yes mummy!" I screeched. The speech will not finish today"Is this how you'll act in your husband's house?"would be her first question. That one would be more of Laila's question than mine and Tana's."My friend! Would you people hurry up and get down here!!" My mum screamed from downstairs.I'm sure her lungs would have hurt after that statement.Nigerian mothers!I found my self scurrying on my heels into the bathroom to freshen and prepare for the day's work.
Epilogue****Wedding bells!!!As usual, I was in a frenzy to put everything in place.Tana was right after all, concerning a possible proposal after the grand opening. I certainly did not see it coming but I'm happy today is the big day.So, let me give the low down on how the proposal went. That night, we went for a celebratory dinner at a fancy restaurant for just close family and friends and while we were having dinner some romantic music came on and the groom popped out of nowhere professing his love with a long epistle and finally went down on one knee with a big rock and said."Tana, will you marry me?"Tana being so extra first had finish her glass of water before turning to her him and screamed a 'Yes' so Ioud even the heavens heard. We partied for the rest of the night, it was beautiful. That was just a month ago. Seems like Tunji was p
Chapter Thirty eight****I took a seat in front of her without breaking eye contact, I could tell she was surprised that I showed up at her office after so long."How have you been?" I asked coolly."Well. How have you been?" She replied in the same tone."Good." I said back and we both hummed. Our eyes settling on anything but each other."This is really awkward." She blurted out."I know right." I concurred."I'm sorry." We both said at the same time, only to be followed by tear filled giggles.I walked around the desk and pulled her into my embrace."I missed you so much." She managed to get out amid incessant sobs.Yup, pregnant Tana was an emotional Tana."I missed you too, so so much." I gave
Chapter Thirty Seven****The house was beginning to suffocate me. Every where I turned, I was met with faux sympathisers who moved about creating messes, with feigned sullen expressions. How pathetic!I sipped on my glass of water as I watched the workers scurry in and out of the kitchen to attend to the overly demanding guests. I held back a scoff when one woman audaciously made her way into the kitchen and not so politely asked for a snack for her teenage son who by the way, I wondered why he was present in the first placeI had never even met the woman in question before and trust me I had met lots of my parents' associates and I could still place their faces even without remembering their names. People are weird.I groaned in displeasure. There was too many people swarming around like bees and I wasn't comfortable, not one bit. I just wanted the day to be done and over with, nothing w
Chapter Thirty Six****That Sunday morning started off dark and gloomy, for reasons we could not decipher until much later. The church service had left me with a lot to think about. Pastor Ola had hammered on the message of forgiveness so much, I felt he was speaking to us, to me especially."Forgiveness," His raspy voice echoed in the large auditorium that chilly morning."Brethren, forgiveness is a mystery all unto itself but it does work miracles when extended to the recipient as well as the person who forgives." He exhorted, he went on, giving instances from the Bible and stores of personal experiences,"So, I implore you as a child of God, to let go of that chip on your shoulder and forgive whoever has wronged you." Pastor Ola ended his exhortation but his words rang in my heart even after the church service. Those words had defin
Chapter Thirty five****The weekend rolled by before I could even notice. It seemed like the days rolled by like that for a reason.I got out of bed, grouchy. I said my morning prayers, after which I picked up my phone, several notifications graced my sight. Client after client in my inbox on different social media accounts, trying to get in touch with me. This was a good thing, it had some good money rolling in but for the first in my life, I was in no way eager to show off my skills. This was not good. Ignoring the incessant buzzing of my device, I trudged into the bathroom to freshen up, and start the new day.I dressed up and made my way out of the room, locking the door behind me. I came to a brief halt when my gaze fell on Laila who was just stepping out of her room which was next to mine. She looked away from me, walked past and headed downstairs, like she did not just see me. I shook my head a
Chapter Thirty four****This feeling, this feeling was something I couldn't quite place my finger on, something words failed to describe, but I honestly did not want it to stop just yet. The butterflies in my belly probably sang hallelujah a thousand times over, the way he caressed my face as we kissed had me wanting more of his kisses. His tongue brushed my lower lip and I moaned giving him access into my mouth. I knew we had to stop at some point but me being caught up in the moment as I was, I fisted his collar, grappling it as he held on to me tightly. We finally stopped to catch our breaths, his forehead resting on mine. He stared into my eyes and I looked away suddenly embarrassed at how I conducted myself. It wasn't my first kiss but I surely had not been kissed for a very long time, if that distant memory was enough to go by.I mean, my crush and I had a moment back in high school where we confessed our feelings and our lips
Chapter Thirty three****I got home late in the afternoon, drained. After such an exhausting day, I wanted nothing more than heading into my bathroom for a nice long bath and cuddling up in bed. And as usual, my plans were thrown out the window the moment I stepped out of the lobby into the living room.My mood changed as soon as my eyes fell on the people present there. My gaze slowly directed itself to my mum who looked like a shadow of herself in the midst of the numerous visitors offering their condolences for her husband's ailment. News sure did spread like wildfire, our phones had been buzzing with phone calls and text messages ever since the tragic event from the previous night."Oh Lola darling, you're back?" I turned to the sweet voice that called me out. It was aunt Aisha,Tana's mum.I quickly plastered a smile on my face and went in for a hug."Oh sweetie
Chapter Thirty two****Here I was, staring up at the massive building that I hadn't been to for several months. Felt like just yesterday when I succumbed to working here without a clue as to the massive secrets that held me bound at the time. I wasn't totally free but I was finally in the know for the most part, no longer left in the dark, blind to all those happenings.I heaved a breath as I made my way inside, the sudden change in temperature taunting my nostrils and leaving me with goosebumps, it was freezing in here. I hadn't turned my air conditioner on while I was driving, I wanted to enjoy the wind, maybe if I did I wouldn't have been so affected by the office's temperature."Miss Lola?" I heard a familiar voice which I turned to immediately."Hi Stella." I waved with a small smile. She squealed and rushed over to give me a hug. That caught the attention
Chapter Thirty one****"Lola, Lola, wake up!" I vaguely heard my name being called in panic. What was going on? I answered drowsily until whoever it was shook me roughly."I'm up, I'm up!!" I yelled. "What is it?" I turned to put on my bedside lamp, only to come face to face with a disheveled Laila."Dad just suffered a seizure. They're taking him to the hospital right now!!!"She informed frantically. The news registered and I bolted out of bed without delay, Laila hot on my trail.I rushed down the flight of stairs, heading straight for the front door. The blaring of the siren from the ambulance overwhelmed me the moment I got out of the house. I saw him being lifted from the stretcher on to the trauma board. I took in the sight, he looked so helpless and vulnerable, to think he was alright that morning."Would you like to join the patient in the vehicle ma?"
