Chapter Six
**********
"Do I have to?" I whined when James called me out to give Tunji a tour of the premises. I was a nervous wreck around that guy. James gave me a skeptical look, and I stood up immediately.
Mr James Ololade was a man of few words, he's a strict one. His stares were enough to throw you off balance. He didn't entertain tardiness or flops of any kind, especially because the department we worked in was very delicate - any mishaps and we're done for. He had huge responsibilities in his hands, so I wouldn't blame him for being such a killjoy in spite of him being a young bachelor.
"I'll be on my way sir" I walked out of my office, a little bit flustered. I was going to see him again.
I took the elevator again and headed straight for the CEO's office. Still nervous, I knocked as soon as I got in front of the well sculpted mahogany door and stepped in after being given permission.
"Sir you sent for me" I said acting oblivious to the reason I was being sent for. The chair was turned back to me and I could tell something was off. From the look of things it wasn't Mr Wole sitting there, my doubts got cleared immediately the swivelling chair was turned in my direction.
Of course it was Tunji
I could tell cause there was an unusual calm in the office, unlike his father who was a chatterbox, at least with me though.
"Lola, right?" He said with a lovely accent, he was obviously a Yankee boy. I was flushed a little. A little bit pissed about the fact that he forgot my name so soon. Why did I even care?
"Yes sir"I replied professionally. I didn't want to give him any wrong ideas.
You can over think sha, did he ask you out?
My subconscious spoke and it was right, I was certainly over thinking things.
"Shall we proceed sir?" I asked.
"Yeah, but hold up, you're missing something here." He said coolly.
I was a bit perplexed, but that was cleared almost immediately when he spoke.
"We're supposed to be on first name basis Lola, you're being so uptight"
"Oh" realization hit me.
"I apologize Mr Tunji." It felt disrespectful calling my boss by his first name, so putting a title in front made it a little less flippant for me.
"Lola, it's just two of us here, save the formalities for the outside world" He cooed.
Was he flirting with me?
Stop thinking nonsense jor, he's just being friendly.
I gave a small smile.
"Understood... Shall we?" I nodded a little bit towards the door. I couldn't stand his intense gaze any longer.
"Yes."he stood up arranging his outfit
I tried to stop myself from staring and I was successful to some extent. We were out the door afterwards, we made some small talk to make the tour a little less boring and awkward.
As we walked through the halls, the stares and gasps from the ladies were astonishing. I mean who gapes at a guy like that, it was way too obvious.
I prided myself in the fact that I was more composed than the rest of them. Some of them even batted their lashes and winked at him in the name of greeting.
Na wa o. Laila and Tana so need to hear this gist.
I chuckled at the thought. Those two would be so busy with work, I could talk to them till it's weekend.
The tour took over an hour and I was exhausted. For once, I hated wearing heels. I was about bidding him a farewell for the rest of the day, as it was lunch time already, when he called me back.
"Uhmm Lola would you like to have lunch with me?" He asked, his eyes showing a glint of nervousness.
I hoped he wasn't asking me out already, it was way too early for that.
As if he read my thoughts he immediately added.
"No strings attached, just a business lunch. Take it as a form of gratitude for going through the trouble showing me around."
He got that last part right. Heck! It was a lot of trouble. I still wanted to decline and he spoke once again before I could say anything.
"Lola please don't say no, please." He gave me puppy eyes. Omg he's adorable.
I almost squealed at his cuteness. But I rolled my eyes instead.
"Okay fine, I'll go get my bag from the office." I said already making a move.
"Thank you. I'll walk you to your office we'll leave afterwards." He said walking beside me.
I almost jumped. He's super sweet.
I face palmed my self inwardly
You can't be crushing on him Lola, it's wayyy too soon to start assuming things.
I listened to the little voice in my head, it was very correct.
For all I knew, he could be in a relationship whilst I was there drooling over him.
We stepped out of the building soon afterwards. He led me to his slick ride.
This guy was definitely living THE life.
He opened the door for me and shut it after I got in, before walking over to his side.
What a gentleman!
I fastened my seatbelt and he drove off afterwards.
He brought us to a fancy restaurant, not too far from the office. The prices on the menu proved that only wealthy people could afford to be in there.
I mean who in his right senses would buy a bottle of water for a thousand naira?!
Haba nau!
Okay forget the fact that my family is quite well to do, but I'm a Nigerian woman after all and we manage the economics of our homes. We know better than to squander money on frivolous desires. I speak for myself though, cause some of the girls here could suck a man dry. But, the prices in this restaurant were just over hyped.
I ordered for our famous Jollof rice with turkey parts, plus salad. I settled for water seeing that the things I had ordered were nearly ten thousand naira.
Tunji ordered for a pack of juice with his meal which was the same as mine.
We ate in silence for a while before Tunji broke the ice.
"So Lola, tell me about yourself." He said with his elbows propped on the table, looking straight at me. Typical question..
"Well there's nothing much to tell." I started
"As you know I'm Titilola Gregg, graduate of Business administration. Of course you know my father and mother. I have three older siblings, two brothers and an immediate elder sister. I'm the last child of my family" I paused.
"Did I give too much personal information?" I asked with furrowed brows.
He chuckled. "Not at all, I'd actually like to know more about you." He said with a lopsided grin. I smiled.
"Why don't you tell me about you too?" I asked not wanting to be the only one dispersing information.
"Well you already know my parents, we're the Oluwoles' after all." He said with a hint of pride in his tone.
"Arrogant much?" I said with raised eyebrows, I could not stand arrogant people.
"Nah just kidding, I'm Olatunji Oluwole, twenty eight years old, graduated with a degree in business administration, two years ago. My first degree was actually in computer science but my dad would have none of it cause he wanted me to take over the family business, so I went back to school for my second degree"
I was shocked to say the least, I was so impressed with what he had said.
He continued "Well, I have a younger brother and sister." With that he ended his speech.
"That's really nice Tunji, I know you're going to do great with the company" I said with the sweetest smile I could muster.
"Yeah... Right." He had a forlorn look and I couldn't help but worry about him.
"What's wrong?" I asked, with concern lacing my tone.
"Running the company ain't my passion Lola, that's not what I want to do. I want to do something that makes me happy and fulfilled at the end of the day but my dad doesn't understand that."
I sighed. It felt good knowing someone that I could relate to. To think that someone in Tunji's position could feel the same way. The fulfillment that comes with doing something you love could never be replaced even by large paychecks. If only our indignant parents could see that and let us be happy.
"I can totally understand you, cause I'm stuck in the same situation as you." I also had a far away look.
Tunji looked up abruptly. "Really?" He said with his voice showing genuine concern. I nodded with a small smile that didn't reach my eyes.
"I've always wanted to be a designer, but I couldn't bring myself to tell my parents as the usual routine for us was to study the course of their choice and get jobs, they didn't actually care about our choices." I explained my plight.
I went ahead to tell him about how I got the job and how I felt about it .
He smiled patting my palm on the table, I'm sure, I felt goosebumps on my skin.
"Everything will be just fine Lola, I'm not in a position to advice you but I think you should open up to your parents and chase your dreams."
I laughed.
"I'll follow my dreams, just not now, there's so much going on at the moment." I said as I thought about Laila's wedding.
"It's alright" He looked at the time on his Rolex watch and his mouth formed an "O"
It looked adorable.
"Time's far spent, we should be on our way" He said.
"Yeah you're right, thanks for the lunch." I said with a smile while standing up.
"You're welcome, I actually enjoyed the company and I'd certainly want more of this." He said with a small smile. I almost blushed.
He settled the bills and we walked out of the restaurant side by side.
In his gentlemanly nature, he opened the door for me again as I stepped in. He drove off before I knew it.
******
I got home from the office before Laila, that's not exactly usual but I was glad dinner was ready before I got home. Martha, our new cook was the best. I could not imagine myself cooking after such a long day.
I got to my room, went on my knees and prayed before slipping out of my clothes and taking a thorough shower.
Dad was probably still at work while mum traveled out of town for a new project. To be honest I was glad they weren't home. Their presence always came with some drama.
I checked my phone and saw a few messages.
Tana:You just forget me Abi. 😕
Me: Honey 😘, you know I can't do that, its just work.
Tana:🙄 Issa lie, go away jor.
Me:No vex nau, Oya girls day out on Saturday, you in? 🙏😢
Tana: 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻 you know it, catch ya later bunny 😏
Me:Lots of gist to catch up on. TTYL I love you ❤😍🙈
Tana: I love you too ❤😘, but go get a boyfriend 😏😝
Me: 😅😂😂 you're crazy.
Tana:Offline.
I sighed, after a bout of laughter. I'd missed her a lot. I looked forward to the weekend, we had lots of things to catch up on.
I went down stairs to have dinner and just then Laila walked in.
"Hey sis." I hollered, she walked up to me with a smile playing on her lips.
"Hmm, someone looks very happy today." I teased with a smirk while wiggling my brows. She laughed.
"Are you going to tell me what's up or not?" I said, digging into my meal.
It was spaghetti and beef sauce and I savoured the taste.
"Lola chill jor, lemme freshen up and have dinner, I'll tell you all about my day" She said with a blush.
She was hiding her fingers underneath her laptop bag and I wondered what she held there. Well she promised to tell me, so I shrugged, giving her the go ahead. She walked up the stairs and before I knew it she was having dinner with me after her shower.
I know I'm a slow eater.
We finished up and I washed the dishes afterwards, then we went on to her room. It truly seemed like she had exciting news and I wondered if I should tell her about Tunji just yet, or wait till our outing on Saturday with Tana.
"Oya spill, no time." I said jocularly
She picked up something, turning away from me.
She smiled again and showed me her left hand, it had a beautiful engagement ring on. My eyes widened in anticipation and she squealed.
"Okay okay." Laila said after taking a deep breath.
"I went out with Yemi today and we talked for a while, that's personal you don't need to know what we talked about." she spluttered cheerfully and I rolled my eyes.
"Continue jor, wetin concern me?" I was still eager to hear the news.
"He said he felt attracted to me and wants us to give the relationship a try before tying the knot and then he said he never proposed properly, so he went on his knees and asked me to marry him, like I had a choice anyway, so I said yes" She finally paused and I squealed while hugging her.
I was so happy for her and I prayed he continued to treat her well after their marriage.
"Tolani I'm so excited, I'm happy for you!" I screeched, giddy with joy.
Just as I was about saying something else, her phone rang, it was her boo.
No... She literally saved it as boo, that's quick.
I quickly said "awww" before she picked the call while she glared at me, and smiled into the phone when she heard his voice from the other end.
She kicked me out of the room when I kept batting my lashes and giving funny faces while she talked on the phone.
Their call lasted for over an hour.
I go love o.
I laid on my bed, thankful to God for a blissful day, and hoping for the best of what life has to offer.
Chapter SevenIt was finally Saturday! Oh what a feeling! No work, just chores.. Ugh."Wait for it... In three, two, one.... ""Tolani!!,Titilola!!" Mum screamed our names simultaneously. The countdown was me waiting for that call along with Laila. Mummy couldn't sit with the fact that we did not have anything doing, as we had finished up our chores for the morning. For the record, it is typical of Nigerian mothers to dig up house chores at the slightest hint of inactivity from her children.Trust me it's exhausting to have her around."Coming mummy!" Laila yelled pulling me along with her, down the stairs.#Sister goals, I know right!"Ehen, it's good you're here" Mom said, "I just fixed an appointment with the person who'll design your dress, she said she'll be here or if she can't make i
Chapter eight I'm in deep trouble... I kept chanting to myself all through the ride. The silence throughout the drive from Aunt JoJo's place down to the house was deafening. I was even scared to breathe, I'm sure Laila was in the same situation. Yes, that's how intimidating my mom is. Once in a while she would mumble things we couldn't decipher. She was really pissed. Lola see your life! I fought the urge to face palm myself cause I didn't want any death glares from my mom. Finally the petrifying ride came to an end as she drove into the huge compound. I stepped out turning to face Laila, she gave a pitiful look,at that point I knew I had to be strong. Hardly had we gotten in the living room when mom's voice thundered "Titilola!"
Chapter Nine*****So... Before we knew it, we found ourselves at the Greggs' mansion. The place was getting really busy already.Wedding wahalaI groaned inside of me as I thought of all the teasing I would get, with everyone wanting me to get married. I was sure, they'd start asking for my boyfriend in fact.Typical of Nigerians to poke their noses into other people's business. No one ever asked Grey about marriage because he's a guy and according to them, He's just 29. Seriously though, that's unfair. He's free to have all the wild fun while I have to be pestered, almost on a daily basis about my relationship status.I'm just 24 nau!Tana's parents never put pressure on her for anything. But in my family it's the exact opposite, they coerced us into doing almost everything concerning our lives. Rebellion would be
Chapter Ten "Titilola, Tolani, Tana ooo!"Who's shouting like this now?Oh shoot! It was 9am! And all three of us were still snuggled up in bed. She would definitely have our heads on a plate, except for Laila though.Perks of being the bride."Yes mummy!" I screeched. The speech will not finish today"Is this how you'll act in your husband's house?"would be her first question. That one would be more of Laila's question than mine and Tana's."My friend! Would you people hurry up and get down here!!" My mum screamed from downstairs.I'm sure her lungs would have hurt after that statement.Nigerian mothers!I found my self scurrying on my heels into the bathroom to freshen and prepare for the day's work.
Chapter Eleven**** "Good day sir" Grey greeted dad, prostrating. There was a plastered smile on his face, I could tell it was because of the lady by his side. He isn't exactly cold as Travis but he's not very jovial, in fact, none of us were jovial when it came to Dad.Sad... Isn't it? "My son, how are you?"Seriously though, he had to call him 'my son' ?Does he have to do everything to spite Travis?God epp us o..."I'm fine Dad"Mum came in just before Dad could say anything else, with a small smile playing on her lips."Mummy good afternoon" Grey said still with that plastered smile. What's doing this one? all because of woman? mtcheww"Femi..."
Chapter Twelve******The house was bustling with activity that Thursday morning, I was trying to not be languid in any activity I engaged myself as I hardly had any sleep the previous night."Aunty Lola, grandma said you should come and keep some fried meat for grandpa" Tobi said to me eagerly, he was obviously excited about the errand as he would have a taste of the delicacy."Oh" I groaned inwardly.Where do they want me to put it now?It was like my nephew had read my thoughts."She said you should put it inside this cooler" Ayo jumped out of nowhere startling me."And put it in their bedroom" Arinola completed. It's like you people practiced this thing.I frowned at the thought of climbing the stairs over and over again. I was exasperated
Chapter Thirteen****Ever sat down wondering what your "big day"would be like? That's what I was almost doing when my name boomed from across the room that Saturday morning. Of course, it was my sister's wedding day. She was so tensed up that I felt the same way for her. If there's such a thing as one being worried on another's behalf then I was in that position. It was 9am and we were supposed to be at the church by 10am for the service but someone spent her morning getting all emotional, cuddling with mum who was comforting her. I had never seen her that way before.Wedding jitters are sure scary.Dad came in as mom beckoned him to, while she was snuggled up against my sister."Having second thoughts?" He asked with an arched eyebrow in a cold tone that sent shivers down my spine, I'm sure the same happened to Laila as she sat up imm
Chapter Fourteen*****It was dark already and the ride home was silent. I was too nervous to go in my parents vehicle so I rode with Grey and Igho. Tana had gone with her parents, they didn't want her in the middle of any family drama. They apparently understood my family issues. She left with them after speaking to me with soothing words."Las las we go dey alright" She said reassuring me, I almost chuckled at the thought but I was too tired to do that. The ride home was filled with uncomfortable silence, it sent cold chills down my spine. We arrived sooner than I had expected, and I gulped as I stepped out of the vehicle. I had removed my shoes earlier and put on a pair of fancy slippers that were more comfortable. My parents had arrived much earlier than we had and I walked into the living room after Grey and Igho. My father was speaking to someo
Epilogue****Wedding bells!!!As usual, I was in a frenzy to put everything in place.Tana was right after all, concerning a possible proposal after the grand opening. I certainly did not see it coming but I'm happy today is the big day.So, let me give the low down on how the proposal went. That night, we went for a celebratory dinner at a fancy restaurant for just close family and friends and while we were having dinner some romantic music came on and the groom popped out of nowhere professing his love with a long epistle and finally went down on one knee with a big rock and said."Tana, will you marry me?"Tana being so extra first had finish her glass of water before turning to her him and screamed a 'Yes' so Ioud even the heavens heard. We partied for the rest of the night, it was beautiful. That was just a month ago. Seems like Tunji was p
Chapter Thirty eight****I took a seat in front of her without breaking eye contact, I could tell she was surprised that I showed up at her office after so long."How have you been?" I asked coolly."Well. How have you been?" She replied in the same tone."Good." I said back and we both hummed. Our eyes settling on anything but each other."This is really awkward." She blurted out."I know right." I concurred."I'm sorry." We both said at the same time, only to be followed by tear filled giggles.I walked around the desk and pulled her into my embrace."I missed you so much." She managed to get out amid incessant sobs.Yup, pregnant Tana was an emotional Tana."I missed you too, so so much." I gave
Chapter Thirty Seven****The house was beginning to suffocate me. Every where I turned, I was met with faux sympathisers who moved about creating messes, with feigned sullen expressions. How pathetic!I sipped on my glass of water as I watched the workers scurry in and out of the kitchen to attend to the overly demanding guests. I held back a scoff when one woman audaciously made her way into the kitchen and not so politely asked for a snack for her teenage son who by the way, I wondered why he was present in the first placeI had never even met the woman in question before and trust me I had met lots of my parents' associates and I could still place their faces even without remembering their names. People are weird.I groaned in displeasure. There was too many people swarming around like bees and I wasn't comfortable, not one bit. I just wanted the day to be done and over with, nothing w
Chapter Thirty Six****That Sunday morning started off dark and gloomy, for reasons we could not decipher until much later. The church service had left me with a lot to think about. Pastor Ola had hammered on the message of forgiveness so much, I felt he was speaking to us, to me especially."Forgiveness," His raspy voice echoed in the large auditorium that chilly morning."Brethren, forgiveness is a mystery all unto itself but it does work miracles when extended to the recipient as well as the person who forgives." He exhorted, he went on, giving instances from the Bible and stores of personal experiences,"So, I implore you as a child of God, to let go of that chip on your shoulder and forgive whoever has wronged you." Pastor Ola ended his exhortation but his words rang in my heart even after the church service. Those words had defin
Chapter Thirty five****The weekend rolled by before I could even notice. It seemed like the days rolled by like that for a reason.I got out of bed, grouchy. I said my morning prayers, after which I picked up my phone, several notifications graced my sight. Client after client in my inbox on different social media accounts, trying to get in touch with me. This was a good thing, it had some good money rolling in but for the first in my life, I was in no way eager to show off my skills. This was not good. Ignoring the incessant buzzing of my device, I trudged into the bathroom to freshen up, and start the new day.I dressed up and made my way out of the room, locking the door behind me. I came to a brief halt when my gaze fell on Laila who was just stepping out of her room which was next to mine. She looked away from me, walked past and headed downstairs, like she did not just see me. I shook my head a
Chapter Thirty four****This feeling, this feeling was something I couldn't quite place my finger on, something words failed to describe, but I honestly did not want it to stop just yet. The butterflies in my belly probably sang hallelujah a thousand times over, the way he caressed my face as we kissed had me wanting more of his kisses. His tongue brushed my lower lip and I moaned giving him access into my mouth. I knew we had to stop at some point but me being caught up in the moment as I was, I fisted his collar, grappling it as he held on to me tightly. We finally stopped to catch our breaths, his forehead resting on mine. He stared into my eyes and I looked away suddenly embarrassed at how I conducted myself. It wasn't my first kiss but I surely had not been kissed for a very long time, if that distant memory was enough to go by.I mean, my crush and I had a moment back in high school where we confessed our feelings and our lips
Chapter Thirty three****I got home late in the afternoon, drained. After such an exhausting day, I wanted nothing more than heading into my bathroom for a nice long bath and cuddling up in bed. And as usual, my plans were thrown out the window the moment I stepped out of the lobby into the living room.My mood changed as soon as my eyes fell on the people present there. My gaze slowly directed itself to my mum who looked like a shadow of herself in the midst of the numerous visitors offering their condolences for her husband's ailment. News sure did spread like wildfire, our phones had been buzzing with phone calls and text messages ever since the tragic event from the previous night."Oh Lola darling, you're back?" I turned to the sweet voice that called me out. It was aunt Aisha,Tana's mum.I quickly plastered a smile on my face and went in for a hug."Oh sweetie
Chapter Thirty two****Here I was, staring up at the massive building that I hadn't been to for several months. Felt like just yesterday when I succumbed to working here without a clue as to the massive secrets that held me bound at the time. I wasn't totally free but I was finally in the know for the most part, no longer left in the dark, blind to all those happenings.I heaved a breath as I made my way inside, the sudden change in temperature taunting my nostrils and leaving me with goosebumps, it was freezing in here. I hadn't turned my air conditioner on while I was driving, I wanted to enjoy the wind, maybe if I did I wouldn't have been so affected by the office's temperature."Miss Lola?" I heard a familiar voice which I turned to immediately."Hi Stella." I waved with a small smile. She squealed and rushed over to give me a hug. That caught the attention
Chapter Thirty one****"Lola, Lola, wake up!" I vaguely heard my name being called in panic. What was going on? I answered drowsily until whoever it was shook me roughly."I'm up, I'm up!!" I yelled. "What is it?" I turned to put on my bedside lamp, only to come face to face with a disheveled Laila."Dad just suffered a seizure. They're taking him to the hospital right now!!!"She informed frantically. The news registered and I bolted out of bed without delay, Laila hot on my trail.I rushed down the flight of stairs, heading straight for the front door. The blaring of the siren from the ambulance overwhelmed me the moment I got out of the house. I saw him being lifted from the stretcher on to the trauma board. I took in the sight, he looked so helpless and vulnerable, to think he was alright that morning."Would you like to join the patient in the vehicle ma?"
