Chapter Nine
*****
So... Before we knew it, we found ourselves at the Greggs' mansion. The place was getting really busy already.
Wedding wahala
I groaned inside of me as I thought of all the teasing I would get, with everyone wanting me to get married. I was sure, they'd start asking for my boyfriend in fact.
Typical of Nigerians to poke their noses into other people's business.
No one ever asked Grey about marriage because he's a guy and according to them, He's just 29. Seriously though, that's unfair. He's free to have all the wild fun while I have to be pestered, almost on a daily basis about my relationship status.
I'm just 24 nau!
Tana's parents never put pressure on her for anything. But in my family it's the exact opposite, they coerced us into doing almost everything concerning our lives. Rebellion would be a major struggle but I was confident that I could pull it off.
**************************************
"Dinner's ready" I announced to the family in the living room where they just sat around relaxing.
Dad hadn't come out since we arrived from the airport but we all knew he was in. Mum made an excuse of him being asleep cause he was stressed out. We all pretended to buy it despite knowing who our father was, he couldn't care less what we thought. It was his house after all and he could do whatever he wanted, even disregarding the choices and opinions of his family members and neglecting them emotionally. He was the Lord after all..
I sighed at the thought, God really needed to intervene in my family.
"Lola go and call daddy to come down for dinner" I nearly flinched when I heard what Laila had said.
Why did it always have to be me? Being the last born isn't good at times
"Don't worry I'll go get him" Mum interjected before I could respond
Phew! That was close...
We sat at the table waiting for my Dad to come in, being the head of the family he would decide whether to say "Grace" or call on someone else to do it.
Tana sat next to me, we could feel the tension around us. Everyone probably had the same thing on their minds....
'Travis and Dad's meeting for the first time in two years after their fall out which had been far from settled'
I prayed that God would make everything go smoothly, I heaved a sigh of relief as I felt peace afterwards.
We heard footsteps coming down the stairs and we all went into a frenzy, adjusting things that were already in place. Even my brother's kids put on their best behavior, stopping their chatters abruptly.
How could one man be so intimidating?!
My dad walked in slowly, majestically even...
With his usual kaftan, looking all bossy. His thick glasses perched on the bridge of his nose. Looking into his eyes which roved around the room, one couldn't miss his scrutinizing gaze and then his stare went blank.
Now we see where Travis got his signature blank expression from...
We all stood up as a sign of respect, mum followed him into the room visibly shaken like she'd just argued with my dad, she looked tensed just like the rest of us.
We greeted in our local dialect one after the other, A small smile crept up his face when he pinched the little cheeks of his grandkids earning giggles from them.
Ima genuflected, after earning a side hug from him with a small but nervous smile perched on her face.
He answered the rest of our greetings before turning to Travis, finally.
The moment we had all been waiting for, had come. I kept praying within me for it to go well, I'm sure mom was doing the same because when I looked up, her eyes were tightly shut
"Tolu" My dad called in his deep baritone voice, my brother looked up to match his intense gaze.
"Good evening sir" My brother greeted with a small bow, his lips meshed in a thin line.
So far, so good...
My dad responded after brief silence, they had a stare down for what seemed like forever. My heart thumped heavily against my chest. I've always hated family feuds.
The stare down continued with my brother refusing to be fazed by my dad's intense gaze.
Time stood at a standstill until the very familiar throat clearing by my nervous mother.
"The food is getting cold, I'm sure they're all tired and hungry too" She said with a forced laugh which proved she was a nervous wreck at the moment.
"Yes... Very well, let's have dinner" Dad said like the intense moment never happened, I visibly gulped exchanging glances with Tana, Laila and Ima.
It seemed like I was the only affected by everything going on cause they all ate without sparing any bit on their plate. I practically picked on my food throughout.
Dad suddenly dropped his cutlery, and picked up his glass of water taking a small sip, his gaze on no one in particular till it fell on Tolu.
Uh oh....
"How was your trip?" He asked looking straight ahead, wiping his hands with a napkin.
I didn't need a soothsayer to tell who he was talking to, his tone was very passive as if asking because he was propelled to do it. He couldn't care less about any of those. He undoubtedly did not want to be seen as the villain in this feud.
"Good... It was good" Travis answered not looking up from his plate. My dad chuckled, earning bewildered stares from the rest of us, he was still looking ahead when he heaved a sigh.
"So... You finally deemed it fit to come visit, I for one expected you to keep wallowing in your arrogance and not attend your sister's wedding" He paused, earning a glare from Travis, his fists were clenched on the table. I could tell he was trying his best to keep his infuriation in check.
I gulped once again, this isn't going to end well.
"Oh of course, you can't resist your mother's pleas, typical" The last statement earned a squirm from my mother.
"Benson please stop this" Mum looked at him pleading with her eyes but he shot her a red eyed glare making her flinch.
Travis heaved a breath trying to calm himself, his wife subtly rubbed his shoulder soothingly.
"I came down here for my sister's wedding to give her my blessings like any good brother would. Unlike you sir, I value relationships" Travis said emphasizing on the last statement
And before my dad could reply.
"Now if you'd excuse me, I have to make sure my family gets settled in"
He definitely made that sentence to spite Dad.
And with those words he pulled out of the dinning room with his wife and kids following behind him, heading up the stairs to his former bedroom which had been tidied up awaiting his arrival.
Talk about awkward...
Shortly after the exchange, dad chuckled humorlessly and shook his head right after. We all panicked and one by one we exited the dinning room.
The tension was too much to handle.
Whilst leaving, I pitied the maid who had to clean up after us. I couldn't wait to help out, I just wanted to be in the safe confines of my bedroom, away from all the drama.
Tana was to sleep at my room, she came in shortly after I entered. She went in for a shower after staring at me for a while.
I could tell she was worried about me.
I had always been tensed when it came to things like this, maybe the others didn't show it but it always got to me. When I was younger I would fall ill whenever my parents had extreme fights, maybe it was because I was the youngest but I knew I was just scared of losing my family.
Family bonds meant a lot to me ever since I was tender. Seeing some of my friends from broken homes didn't help matters, I was petrified whenever the thought of me being like those kids came to mind.
But then I found Jesus. Before then, I couldn't do anything about how I felt but after I received salvation, I didn't sit and wonder anymore, I just laid it all at His feet by praying and little by little things began to change. I knew God could change things, no matter how long it took, I chose to believe him.
"Sitting and feeling sorry for yourself won't change matters Lola"
Laila startled me, I didn't know when she walked in. She continued
"This is what it is, nothing's gonna change it" She said with a shrug
That was the last straw. Why did she have to be so negative,I snapped!
"Tolani what's wrong with you?! Why are you sounding like an unbeliever? It's because of this negativity oozing from all of you that this family keeps having challenges" I took in a deep breath after my outburst.
Laila just blinked at me, she was obviously too stunned to speak. I never let my anger get me to the point of venting but I guess I was just about to discover new sides of myself.
"Listen I'm sor... " She cut me off before I could a apologize
"It's alright, I'll get out of your hair now"
She said in a tone that depicted how overwhelmed she was by my anger.
This was our first fight in a long time, I didn't want us to go back to how we were before a certain incident. I didn't want us to go back to being indifferent about each other's existence.
Flashback....
Four years ago...
"Laila Daddy said you shouldn't go out o"
I tried to warn her
"Why not? It's just a night party and they're not even around" She said nonchalantly.
"Laila it's not safe out there, you should know that, it's late already, call whoever invited you and tell them you can't make it tonight"
"Lola please shut up and mind your own business, I'm an adult not a kid" She said glaring at me like she was irritated at the sight of me.
"I've said my own o, get ready to explain yourself when he comes" I said with a shrug
"You're not going to be telling him anything, you hear me?!!" She gripped my hand and pushed me out of her way
She was out the door before I could say anything else.
"I can't let her leave like this, what if something happens to her"
I went up to change immediately, good thing I checked her phone for the address of the party before she left.
I scurried out to wake the driver up, I immediately explained my plight to him and because of the fear of losing his job if anything happened to my sister, he searched quickly for the car keys and before I knew it,we were off to find her. My instincts told me she wasn't safe and I never doubted my guts
Thirty minutes later we came to a stop in front of 40/40 club, the place oozed of alcohol. I scrunched my nose up in disgust, searching for Laila along with the driver. I sighted her at a corner, she looked uncomfortable, a drunk guy was pulling her towards a door, other guys were behind her touching her in inappropriate manners. She looked like she wanted to scream but no one would listen to her. Just then our eyes met and she mouthed the words "help me" Then she looked around her.
It didn't take a second for me to tap our driver and point towards her direction, the guy had almost succeeded in pulling her through the door but she was obviously holding back.
We rushed over to her, and I grabbed her arm. The drunk bastard still tried pulling her and ripped her dress in the process she was almost half naked. Our driver punched him in the face and we were almost causing a scene before we threatened them with the police being on their way if they tried anything funny. And with that I scurried out of the place with my weeping sister in my arms. The friends who had invited her looked away in shame, they knew what they had done, trying to sell my sister off to some man for some wads of naira.
Despicable!
We went straight to our vehicle and the driver drove off without another word.
Laila thanked me profusely ,after that, she gave her life to Christ through me and since then we had been inseparable.
*******************************************
Back to the present...
"Ah ah, Tolani, Titilola" Tana called walking out of the bathroom draped in a towel.
"What's going on here? I heard Lola raising her voice and coming out now your countenances prove that you both had a fight" Her arms were folded across her chest.
Before Laila and I could explain, she'd cut us off.
"Now I don't want to know what happened, but I know you both have to settle it, bury the hatchet now because y'all need each right now. We can't be fighting one another not now, not at all, we're supposed to be praying for things to run smoothly throughout this week not going ahead to make it rougher than it already is. Understood?!" She counseled in one breath.
"Yes ma'am" Laila and I said feigning seriousness, it was more like mockery.
"You should be a motivational speaker" I said bursting into laughter along with my sister. Tana came out of the closet hurling a pillow at my face.
"PILLOW FIGHT!!!" She screamed so much my ears hurt.
The battle was intense, I never want to do that again.
"Confuse me, tell me why you dey confuse me o baby, your body too attractive... "
My new ringtone echoed across the now quiet room, 'Call by Joeboy'.
I picked it up and you can take a wild guess at who was calling
Of course my boss, Tunji.
I swiped to answer it immediately.
"Good day Sir" I greeted and I turned to the two crazy girls on my bed mouthing "Tunji"
They both stifled their squeals and I face palmed myself forgetting about the phone call.
"Hello Lola, are you there?"
Ewo! See embarrassment!
I cleared my throat quickly...
"Yes I am"
"How are you?"
"I'm fine, how are you?" I asked almost giggling as I remembered our last phone call.
"I'm good..."
"Okay..."
"So... How are the preparations for your sister's wedding?"
"It's uhm..." I hesitated..."It's great, just hectic".
"That's normal, hang in there though cause I'm sure you're next".
Talk about awkward, which kin wahala be all this one nau?
"Ah I doubt that o, me that is single to stupor" I forced a laugh
"You? Single? Lola fear God nau, why are you lying?"
Was he seriously doubting me?
"I'm not lying jor, I'm single"
"That makes two of us" He said with a chuckle
Okay this conversation just got "awkwarder"
If that's even a word!
"Wow..." I managed to say
"So what about your friend? Tana?" He asked with reluctance though.
"You're asking about her well-being or if she's single too?"
What? I had to ask na
"Is it okay if I say both?"
I laughed, I could imagine him scratching his neck because of how nervous he sounded.
"She's doing well and single too" I finally answered.
"Wow" He sounded excited but he quickly cleared his throat and asked other random questions before ending the call.
What is this guy up to?
I turned around to meet those two idiots grinning and anticipating the gist.
I gave them anyway so that I could have peace.
"Tana he sounds like he's into you" I told her.
"Me? That's not possible abeg"
"But it's true na, why would he get excited like that when he found out you're single?" I stated the obvious.
"Come, who told you to tell him my relationship status? aproko (gossip)"
"See somebody I'm trying to help o, abeg shift" I pushed her aside playfully.
"Osheyy Helper, free me o Lola" Tana said earning more teasing from Laila and I.
"Have you guys talked at all ever since you exchanged numbers?" I asked eagerly
"Wait o, they exchanged contacts? how?" Laila asked obviously blank.
I quickly filled her in on how they met before Tana answered my question.
"Well... We've chatted a few times on W******p, he didn't seem like he was into me or anything" She said hesitantly with a shrug.
I had a strong feeling that she wasn't telling me something but I decided not to pry. We dropped the issue soon after, prepared for bed and slept off.
Madam bride to be,didn't want to go back to her room, so we were all cuddled up on my bed. I'm sure whoever walked in would have seen "three adorable sisters", more like "musketeers".We always had that effect on people. Sad that one of the Musketeers would be whisked off to marriage soon...
Chapter Ten "Titilola, Tolani, Tana ooo!"Who's shouting like this now?Oh shoot! It was 9am! And all three of us were still snuggled up in bed. She would definitely have our heads on a plate, except for Laila though.Perks of being the bride."Yes mummy!" I screeched. The speech will not finish today"Is this how you'll act in your husband's house?"would be her first question. That one would be more of Laila's question than mine and Tana's."My friend! Would you people hurry up and get down here!!" My mum screamed from downstairs.I'm sure her lungs would have hurt after that statement.Nigerian mothers!I found my self scurrying on my heels into the bathroom to freshen and prepare for the day's work.
Chapter Eleven**** "Good day sir" Grey greeted dad, prostrating. There was a plastered smile on his face, I could tell it was because of the lady by his side. He isn't exactly cold as Travis but he's not very jovial, in fact, none of us were jovial when it came to Dad.Sad... Isn't it? "My son, how are you?"Seriously though, he had to call him 'my son' ?Does he have to do everything to spite Travis?God epp us o..."I'm fine Dad"Mum came in just before Dad could say anything else, with a small smile playing on her lips."Mummy good afternoon" Grey said still with that plastered smile. What's doing this one? all because of woman? mtcheww"Femi..."
Chapter Twelve******The house was bustling with activity that Thursday morning, I was trying to not be languid in any activity I engaged myself as I hardly had any sleep the previous night."Aunty Lola, grandma said you should come and keep some fried meat for grandpa" Tobi said to me eagerly, he was obviously excited about the errand as he would have a taste of the delicacy."Oh" I groaned inwardly.Where do they want me to put it now?It was like my nephew had read my thoughts."She said you should put it inside this cooler" Ayo jumped out of nowhere startling me."And put it in their bedroom" Arinola completed. It's like you people practiced this thing.I frowned at the thought of climbing the stairs over and over again. I was exasperated
Chapter Thirteen****Ever sat down wondering what your "big day"would be like? That's what I was almost doing when my name boomed from across the room that Saturday morning. Of course, it was my sister's wedding day. She was so tensed up that I felt the same way for her. If there's such a thing as one being worried on another's behalf then I was in that position. It was 9am and we were supposed to be at the church by 10am for the service but someone spent her morning getting all emotional, cuddling with mum who was comforting her. I had never seen her that way before.Wedding jitters are sure scary.Dad came in as mom beckoned him to, while she was snuggled up against my sister."Having second thoughts?" He asked with an arched eyebrow in a cold tone that sent shivers down my spine, I'm sure the same happened to Laila as she sat up imm
Chapter Fourteen*****It was dark already and the ride home was silent. I was too nervous to go in my parents vehicle so I rode with Grey and Igho. Tana had gone with her parents, they didn't want her in the middle of any family drama. They apparently understood my family issues. She left with them after speaking to me with soothing words."Las las we go dey alright" She said reassuring me, I almost chuckled at the thought but I was too tired to do that. The ride home was filled with uncomfortable silence, it sent cold chills down my spine. We arrived sooner than I had expected, and I gulped as I stepped out of the vehicle. I had removed my shoes earlier and put on a pair of fancy slippers that were more comfortable. My parents had arrived much earlier than we had and I walked into the living room after Grey and Igho. My father was speaking to someo
Chapter Fifteen ****** I heard the cars drive in while I was sprawled on my bed, lost in thoughts as usual. The benign breeze brushed past my face, I tucked my hair behind my ears as I sat up on my bed, debating within myself whether or not I should step out of the room to meet with my menacing parents or wait for them to come to me. I didn't have to ponder on that for much longer as I soon heard a tap on the door. "Come in" I said, quickly adjusting things that were in place already, out of habit. The door opened to reveal my mum. "Good evening mummy" I greeted. "Evening Lola, your dad is calling for you" I nodded quickly. She could have just sent Martha to call me, why did she have to come herself? Those were my thoughts before my mum interjected. "Now Lola" She reminded and I responded by getting up abruptly. I follo
Chapter Sixteen*****I woke up feeling refreshed by the next day. Being open minded and positive about how my day was going to be, I stepped into the shower, humming to different tunes as the water pelted my skin. The refreshing feeling made me not want to step out of there.Kukuma sleep there ode...A laugh eluded my lips as the thought slipped out of my subconscious self.I picked out a pink chiffon top with a pair of blue jeans and put them on shortly afterwards. I had barely touched my phone, so I swiftly ransacked my bag surreptitiously hoping that my dad had called or texted, begging me to come home but I knew better than to expect that. He was a hard hearted man after all. No calls from mum or any of my siblings. Thinking of siblings, I hadn't heard from my newly married sister, she was probably too occupied in her honeymoon to give me a call and I didn't want to bothe
Chapter Seventeen****"So you're saying your father threw you out of his house, just like that?" Uncle Dayo, Tana's father asked rhetorically. We were all seated in the living room of their six bedroom duplex. Tana sat right next to me, while her mother, Aunt Aisha, was seated opposite us. Her father paced to and fro, a habit he had formed, whenever he was deep in thought.I nodded, fully aware of the fact that there wasn't any need to."I think Benson needs someone to talk to him..." He started."But..." He continued, reluctantly."He is hot headed, stubborn too" He stated finally. My thoughts exactly..."We'll figure something out, but I don't want you being idle dear" Tana's mum interjected."Me neither aunty, I'll have someth
Epilogue****Wedding bells!!!As usual, I was in a frenzy to put everything in place.Tana was right after all, concerning a possible proposal after the grand opening. I certainly did not see it coming but I'm happy today is the big day.So, let me give the low down on how the proposal went. That night, we went for a celebratory dinner at a fancy restaurant for just close family and friends and while we were having dinner some romantic music came on and the groom popped out of nowhere professing his love with a long epistle and finally went down on one knee with a big rock and said."Tana, will you marry me?"Tana being so extra first had finish her glass of water before turning to her him and screamed a 'Yes' so Ioud even the heavens heard. We partied for the rest of the night, it was beautiful. That was just a month ago. Seems like Tunji was p
Chapter Thirty eight****I took a seat in front of her without breaking eye contact, I could tell she was surprised that I showed up at her office after so long."How have you been?" I asked coolly."Well. How have you been?" She replied in the same tone."Good." I said back and we both hummed. Our eyes settling on anything but each other."This is really awkward." She blurted out."I know right." I concurred."I'm sorry." We both said at the same time, only to be followed by tear filled giggles.I walked around the desk and pulled her into my embrace."I missed you so much." She managed to get out amid incessant sobs.Yup, pregnant Tana was an emotional Tana."I missed you too, so so much." I gave
Chapter Thirty Seven****The house was beginning to suffocate me. Every where I turned, I was met with faux sympathisers who moved about creating messes, with feigned sullen expressions. How pathetic!I sipped on my glass of water as I watched the workers scurry in and out of the kitchen to attend to the overly demanding guests. I held back a scoff when one woman audaciously made her way into the kitchen and not so politely asked for a snack for her teenage son who by the way, I wondered why he was present in the first placeI had never even met the woman in question before and trust me I had met lots of my parents' associates and I could still place their faces even without remembering their names. People are weird.I groaned in displeasure. There was too many people swarming around like bees and I wasn't comfortable, not one bit. I just wanted the day to be done and over with, nothing w
Chapter Thirty Six****That Sunday morning started off dark and gloomy, for reasons we could not decipher until much later. The church service had left me with a lot to think about. Pastor Ola had hammered on the message of forgiveness so much, I felt he was speaking to us, to me especially."Forgiveness," His raspy voice echoed in the large auditorium that chilly morning."Brethren, forgiveness is a mystery all unto itself but it does work miracles when extended to the recipient as well as the person who forgives." He exhorted, he went on, giving instances from the Bible and stores of personal experiences,"So, I implore you as a child of God, to let go of that chip on your shoulder and forgive whoever has wronged you." Pastor Ola ended his exhortation but his words rang in my heart even after the church service. Those words had defin
Chapter Thirty five****The weekend rolled by before I could even notice. It seemed like the days rolled by like that for a reason.I got out of bed, grouchy. I said my morning prayers, after which I picked up my phone, several notifications graced my sight. Client after client in my inbox on different social media accounts, trying to get in touch with me. This was a good thing, it had some good money rolling in but for the first in my life, I was in no way eager to show off my skills. This was not good. Ignoring the incessant buzzing of my device, I trudged into the bathroom to freshen up, and start the new day.I dressed up and made my way out of the room, locking the door behind me. I came to a brief halt when my gaze fell on Laila who was just stepping out of her room which was next to mine. She looked away from me, walked past and headed downstairs, like she did not just see me. I shook my head a
Chapter Thirty four****This feeling, this feeling was something I couldn't quite place my finger on, something words failed to describe, but I honestly did not want it to stop just yet. The butterflies in my belly probably sang hallelujah a thousand times over, the way he caressed my face as we kissed had me wanting more of his kisses. His tongue brushed my lower lip and I moaned giving him access into my mouth. I knew we had to stop at some point but me being caught up in the moment as I was, I fisted his collar, grappling it as he held on to me tightly. We finally stopped to catch our breaths, his forehead resting on mine. He stared into my eyes and I looked away suddenly embarrassed at how I conducted myself. It wasn't my first kiss but I surely had not been kissed for a very long time, if that distant memory was enough to go by.I mean, my crush and I had a moment back in high school where we confessed our feelings and our lips
Chapter Thirty three****I got home late in the afternoon, drained. After such an exhausting day, I wanted nothing more than heading into my bathroom for a nice long bath and cuddling up in bed. And as usual, my plans were thrown out the window the moment I stepped out of the lobby into the living room.My mood changed as soon as my eyes fell on the people present there. My gaze slowly directed itself to my mum who looked like a shadow of herself in the midst of the numerous visitors offering their condolences for her husband's ailment. News sure did spread like wildfire, our phones had been buzzing with phone calls and text messages ever since the tragic event from the previous night."Oh Lola darling, you're back?" I turned to the sweet voice that called me out. It was aunt Aisha,Tana's mum.I quickly plastered a smile on my face and went in for a hug."Oh sweetie
Chapter Thirty two****Here I was, staring up at the massive building that I hadn't been to for several months. Felt like just yesterday when I succumbed to working here without a clue as to the massive secrets that held me bound at the time. I wasn't totally free but I was finally in the know for the most part, no longer left in the dark, blind to all those happenings.I heaved a breath as I made my way inside, the sudden change in temperature taunting my nostrils and leaving me with goosebumps, it was freezing in here. I hadn't turned my air conditioner on while I was driving, I wanted to enjoy the wind, maybe if I did I wouldn't have been so affected by the office's temperature."Miss Lola?" I heard a familiar voice which I turned to immediately."Hi Stella." I waved with a small smile. She squealed and rushed over to give me a hug. That caught the attention
Chapter Thirty one****"Lola, Lola, wake up!" I vaguely heard my name being called in panic. What was going on? I answered drowsily until whoever it was shook me roughly."I'm up, I'm up!!" I yelled. "What is it?" I turned to put on my bedside lamp, only to come face to face with a disheveled Laila."Dad just suffered a seizure. They're taking him to the hospital right now!!!"She informed frantically. The news registered and I bolted out of bed without delay, Laila hot on my trail.I rushed down the flight of stairs, heading straight for the front door. The blaring of the siren from the ambulance overwhelmed me the moment I got out of the house. I saw him being lifted from the stretcher on to the trauma board. I took in the sight, he looked so helpless and vulnerable, to think he was alright that morning."Would you like to join the patient in the vehicle ma?"
