Being a cop is a dream I have since I was a kid. Whenever my parents would ask me what do I want when I grow up I would always say, I want to be a cop, nothing else. Even at a young age, I never imagined myself to be anything other than to be a law enforcer. And I did everything to achieve my dream. I worked hard to get here.
"Angeles! Missing kid at the Burton Primary." I immediately stood up as soon as I heard our captain.
"Yes, sir."
Burton Grove is a fast-growing city. Because of the great job opportunities and business ventures, our city that started as a one-horse town became an urban city where dreams can come true. But with a growing population, crimes grow too. Our once peaceful town now has a burglary, robbery, drugs, prostitution, and now a missing kid? Damn! It's getting worst.
"Oliver, stop eating. Damn it!" I grabbed my best friend and partner, Oliver McKnight by his collar and dragged him out of the station.
"Hey! I'm eating!" Oliver complains.
"Shut up and get in as I pushed him towards the car.
Oliver is a great cop and an excellent partner. He is the kind of person who could talk even to a criminal and make friends with them. I guess it's because of his calm voice and cool personality that everyone seems to like talking to him. Unlike me, who always looks serious and authoritative. People always get intimidated by me.
" Police officers are already at the school. She went missing at her first period." Oliver said as he read through the file given to me by our captain.
"Didn't she just wandered around? Or maybe left the school with some friends and went somewhere else?" I said thinking that it could be too early to say that the kid's missing.
"Nah, no one else is missing aside from her. And according to this, her teacher saw a mysterious-looking guy wearing their maintenance uniform. It says here that she saw the guy wearing a cap so low that it covers half of his face." Oliver read the report aloud.
"And she didn't report it?" Unbelievable.
"Nope, she thought something's wrong with the man's way," Oliver said laughing.
"Damn, people!" I drove as fast as I could.
When we arrive at the Burton Grove Primary, we saw some police officers interviewing the maintenance crews and other facility and faculty members. But one person caught my attention. She's beautiful and sexy but she is somehow yelling at one of our officers.
"You are all useless! Why can't just find her?" Wow! Attitude.
"Excuse me, what's going on?" I asked, I didn't mind hiding my annoyance.
"You are all incompetent and sells, that's what." I was asking our police officer but she's the one who answered me.
"Let me guess, your the missing kid's teacher?" I immediately had a hunch on who she is.
"Yes, why?" She asked sarcastically.
You're that teacher, huh. "Oh, so you're the teacher who is the mysterious guy wearing a cap almost covering half of his face? Do you know that it's your fault the kid is missing?"
"Wha—"
"Yeah, seeing a stranger within the school premise and not reporting it? Irresponsible. Now, you dare to blame us for not having enough to go on?" It was too late for me to realize that I said those words louder than I should have.
"You what?" By the look of the woman who approached us and her swollen eyes from crying nonstop, I think this is the mother. "Is this how irresponsible the teachers of this school are? My God! My daughter is missing because of you!" Damn!
Officers have to carefully take her away and calm her down. The father of the missing kid is staring at her like he's about to strangle her to death. When I looked at the teacher, she was trying not to cry but a tear escaped from her eyes.
"Get the father away from the teacher. Go." I whispered to one of the officer near me.
I wanted to apologize but decided not to. She doesn't have the right to yell at our officers and blame us. She's with the gravest mistake when failed to report the stranger. Although, I honestly felt bad for putting her in the spotlight that way.
"You didn't have to talk to her that way, man," Oliver said when we walk away from the people.
"I know, man. I got carried away." I honestly said.
We walked out of the school and stood at the side of the road. There are a lot of establishments around the school but none of them noticed anything. Who could blame them? They are all busy with their businesses. But there's one thing I noticed with all of them.
"Did anyone asked for a copy of these establishment's CCTV footage for the whole morning?" I asked Oliver who is now, eating, again.
"Do you really have to eat every hour?" I asked out of amusement. Since we were in high school, Oliver is always munching on something.
"Sorry, I can't help it." He said in between chewing and swallowing. I just shook my head in response.
"Stay here, I'll have some officers to get CCTV footage."
I walked back to the school and talk to some of the officers. I found standing in front of the principal's office and when I looked at the window of the office, I saw the teacher talking to the principal. No, she's being lectured by the principal. She's got her head down and her fingers are nervously playing on the beads of her bracelets.
We already have officers searching for the kid and I heard the family and friends of her parents are already coming up with a search party. I fear for the kid's life. We have to find her as soon as possible. This is what's hard with missing cases, especially if there's a possibility that they were abducted. If there were not found within 24 hours, the chance of finding them alive is already thin.
Eight in the evening when I decided to finally come home. There's nothing much that we could today but wait for the CCTV footage. When I arrived home, our mom is preparing for our dinner.
"Hi, Chris!" Melanie, our youngest sister, kissed me on my cheeks.
"Bro, meet my girlfriend Lindsay." Mark, our eldest brother, said as he introduced his girlfriend.
"Hi! Be careful with my brother, okay?" I joked.
"Damn you, bro." He replied laughing.
I thought our dinner for tonight will be like any other night, fun and enjoyable. But it turned into a nightmare for me when they started bombarding me with questions about my love life.
"Yeah, bro. You're not getting any younger. When do you plan on getting married?" Jeffrey, my younger brother said?
"Mind your business, kid. Now, shut up and eat."
They all laughed at how I responded to Jeffrey's question. I don't want to be too serious but it's not funny. I know I'm getting old and all, but what can I do? I haven't found the right girl. I don't want to be in a relationship that I'm not sure will last until the end. I not wasting my time on nonsense flings.
Oliver and I spent the whole morning reviewing hours' worth of CCTV footage. They all came from the establishments around the school. So far, we haven't seen anything out of the ordinary, which frustrates me even more. We wasted precious time that doesn't have to watch those videos."Damn, my eyes hurt," Oliver complains after watching the last CCTV footage. He buried his head in his hands and slumped on his reclining chair. Who could blame him? Even my eyes hurt a bit."We didn't find anything that could help us, shit!" I wanted to throw all the things around me out of frustration. As I stood up to get some coffee, one of our rookies saw the video playing on the monitor."Hey, I know that van." Oliver and I both looked at him immediately. "My dad used to work on the toy factory that owns that van." He said to both of us."Toy factory? The last time that a toy factory was opened in Burton was—""Twenty years ago." I cut Oliver off when
Half of the Burton Grove Police Department came to the southern border to secure the area and ensure that the kid will be rescued. We tried so hard to keep the media out of it because we don't want to tip the abductor that we already found them. That will put the kid's life in danger. I ordered every police officers to position themselves around the cabin. I wanted to make sure that he won't escape. As soon as I receive the confirmation that everyone was in position, Oliver and I walked towards the house. I hide below the window as Oliver knock on the door. I volunteered to go to the back of the house because I saw a small window that looks like a basement, and Oliver is too fat to fit in. Besides, Oliver is always a great distraction because he's quick to think of reasons and lies that are believable to those who don't know him. When I finally heard the front door open, I quickly ran to the back and used my combat knife to open the window. When the little girl saw me,
Sunday, my family's favorite day. I specifically requested this to be my day off because I wanted to maintain a semblance of everyday life. This is the only day that our parents require us to wake up early to attend the first mass at six.As we enter the church, people from all over the city greeted us. We are not rich but are respected—especially my parents, Judge Anita Leone Angeles and Judge Lorenzo Angeles. They may be retired, but people still remembered how they put a corrupt politician behind bars. This politician almost ruined our city. And despite the death threats that my parents receive daily, they still did their best to put him in jail."Good morning Judge Anita, Judge Lorenzo!" I feel so proud of my parents. People still call them 'Judge' even though it's been three years since they retired."Hi, Ron, Letty. Please, Anita and Lorenzo would be fine." My mom, gracefully, responded to them. After the mass, we went to the Burton Grove Rese
On my way to the station, I felt thirsty, so I decided to stop at the first grocery store I saw. When I entered the store, I saw some of my high school friends. We exchanged some hellos and continued finding what we want to buy. I went straight to the drinks section and picked up an energy drink. As I was about to turn around, I heard two ladies talking. "That detective is really making a name for himself. I saw the trending post on F******k about how he saved a child at Reserve last Sunday." The woman in a red dress said. "Yeah, I heard about it. And guess what, he's single." The other woman in a floral dress responded. "He's practically a hero and a handsome one at that." The third woman in tight jeans and tank top added. "He's not a hero; that's his job. Besides, that man is a jerk." The voice of the fourth woman was familiar, so I walked towards them. And there I saw the teacher of Krishna. "Good morning, ladies." I greeted them. T
"What the hell, Jeffrey! Why here?" I was on my way to our backyard when I heard Mark yelled at Jeffrey."It's not my fault, bro. She doesn't like you! Why don't you just accept that?" Jeffrey yelled back."How could even have the chance to court her if you already stole her from me!" Mark yelled again.Wait, are my brothers fighting over a girl?Mom and Dad left early for the convention, that they were invited to be a guest speaker. I didn't even know that my brothers have an issue."I didn't steal her from you! You never had her, Mark! Why don't you accept that!" Jeffrey's voice is more hostile now."Damn you, Jeffrey! Damn you!" When I heard the noise like things are already falling, I decided to go out. I saw Mark wrestling Jeffrey. What the?"Hey! That's enough, damn it!' I tried to separate them, but they just kept coming, especially Mark."I said enough!" I hit Mark's with my left elbow and Jeffrey with my right. "You're
Today is one of those days that we are not so busy. It looks like the criminals of Burton Grove take a day off too. Oliver and I decided to have lunch at our favorite music lounge. It's been a long time since we visited that place. We were joking and laughing when we arrived at the Burton's Music Bar and Bistro. Oliver was quick with our favorite food and drinks while I look for a comfortable spot. But as I walk towards the corner, I heard an obnoxious voice of a man rumbling about his achievements and how great he is. His companions are obviously bored and irritated but were polite enough not to interrupt him."And that little b*tch who sued Albert for rape? Only a fool would believe her. She's using the victim card to screw Albert. I'll bet you my whole year's salary; she and her family are just after Albert's money." The man bluntly said. It's a spark ignited inside of me when I heard him say those words about my goddaughter. I remembered him from Sig and Fre
Theodore Burnett was invited to a convention by his old colleagues. He felt so entitled and recognized even though he was just requested as a guest like the others. His narcissistic behavior always gives him a sense of importance. Like he is always better than everybody else. But in reality, Theodore is haunted by his flaws and imperfection. He despises seeing people around him accomplish things that he couldn't. He's never happy when someone else takes the spotlight."Welcome one and all to the annual Engineer Convention." The host announced as the convention started.Theodore scanned his surroundings. He was studying his surroundings and the people around them. He watched as the top Engineers from all over the country chat with each other about their accomplishments, newly purchased properties, and so on. Theodore scoffed. As he scans the area, Theodore saw a woman who caught his attention. Her beauty is simple yet, elegant and sophisticated. She looks
When are you bringing a girlfriend home, Chris? When do you plan on getting married, Chris? Blah, blah, blah. Why is my love life a part of their problem? I haven't met the woman who would capture my heart, that's all. I don't want to be that guy who gets married this month and files a divorce six months after. When I get married, I want it to be permanent. Not just a phase that will pass.My morning started not so great because of Melanie's questions about my love life. Our mom and dad started asking me, too. They wanted to see their grandchildren. And Mark finally having a girlfriend didn't help my situation.Mark had a few girlfriends in the past. Jeffrey always has a girlfriend. Melanie is in a long-term relationship with her boyfriend, Andrew. While me? Nah, never mind."Hey, Chris!""Morning, Chris."My colleagues greeted me as I entered the station, but I just nodded at them. I'm not in the mood."Hey, bro. What's the matter?"
Oliver's POV"We have a missing woman in Normson City."One of our police officers announced. We were monitoring every missing woman in at city to ensure that if Theodore will strikes again, we would know. After he escaped prison, it's like we were just waiting for the other shoe to drop. Meaning, we are just waiting for another dead woman to turn up."How old? Victim's profile?" Chris asked."Twenty-two years old, business owner."Damn it! When Chris picked up his jacket, I too, did the same. The missing woman fits Theodore's victim profile. We have to check it out. Until Theodore Burnett was found, we can't ignore any possibility that he is killing again. For the past three weeks, we have been in constant communication with other cities in the region to gain access to their missing person's reports."Did you get the addressof the family?" I asked Chris."Yeah, I got it."Without wasting any precious time, Chris and I went to

Every now and then, Theodore Burnett would go to the where he was born. There were so many memories on that place that most of the times, he wants to bury deep in his heart. But, sometime, like today, he wants to remember who he was, and how it all began. His condition made him interested in psychology. Though, not to the point that he wanted to make a degree out of it. He just wanted to learn enough to understand himself. But, no matter how hard he looked, nothing can actually explain what is really going on in his mind."This city hasn't change at all." Theodore whispered to himself. Everytime he visits the city, it's going back in time. Back when he was still young. That awkward teenager that doesn't fit in anything. He always felt like no one is better than him. That he's the best, and no one can compare to him. His narcissistic attitude made him an outsider. Every kids his age always avoid him. They don't even want to be in the same group as him in any kind
Last time I saw Mary Sue, she looks truly happy. That crushed all the courage that I had in me. I wanted to talk to her. Not to tell her that I love her, and make her choose, but to tell that I love her, and because of that I want to see her happy. Even though her happiness doesn't include me.But, when I saw her with her new boyfriend, it was more than enough for me to know that I don't have to talk to her at all. She's happy with her, and that's all that matters. I don't have to ruin anything by expressing how I really feel about her."Chris? Hi! How are you?" I wanted to be swallowed by the ground right about now. I had no idea that I'd bump int Mary Sue tonight. I just wanted to take a walk to clear my head."Mary, hi. I'm good, you?""I'm doing great. Hey, listen. I heard about what happened to Melissa. What she went through that night, and what she's been going through right now, that's not easy. I know how much you love her, and I'm happy to know t
Theodore woke up an intense headache. He can feel that is clothes is soaked with sweat, as well as his old worn out mattress. The last thing that he remembered from last night the ringing in his ears. It's like he had nightmare, only the feeling was too vivid. He can still feel joint pain, especially on his shoulder, but he feels better now. Finally, the fever already broke. Just by looking outside of the burned building he chose to stay for a while, it's almost nightfall. It's a good thing because he could finally get out to get some food, and steal some medicine for his shoulder pain. After realizing how much troubles he is in, Theodore learned how to play it smart. He only still little amount in every store to avoid attention. One box of medicine from a pharmacy, at least five different brand of canned goods from a grocery store. It's the only way for him to stay off the radar."Alright, time to find some food." As soon the night came, Burnett snuck out of th
After the incident at the hidden falls, my parents became more focus on taking care of Melissa. They never left the house after what happened. Even my brothers have been so obsessed about helping her. She's still locking herself inside her room, but she's eating with us now, which I consider as a good thing.Today is my rest day, and I decided to stay at home to help my famil with sister. I was trying to thing of the best thing to do for her, but my mind is coming up blank. We've done everything we can, and I'm losing my mind just for thinking. Finally, I decided to just make her something to eat."Mel, can I come in, please?" I made her chicken soup, and her favorite egg sandwich. It didn't take long for Melissa to open the door. She still looks like she's not getting enough sleep."Yeah, come in." Mel said in a weak voice."Mel, you're still not sleeping well, yet?""No, I'm still having those nightmares. Sometimes, I can't even sleep at all beca
The cold wind blows as the rainy season approaches. It's been a long time since we last visited the hidden falls, but I can still remember how we enjoyed swimming. Melissa was sixteen yeas old when we last hang out in this place, but maybe she still remembers.Looking at my sister standing on the edge of the largest rock at the side of the crest. Jumping from the crest to the base is dangerous because the rocks in the bottom of the pool. I can see that she's trembling, and he eyes looks so scared, but I can't risk coming to her. I don't want to startle her, and give a reason to jump."Melissa, please. Just stay away from the edge, baby. Come on." I kept on trying to convince her to come to me, but she's not listening."Det. Angeles, we got it from here. Please stand aside." One of the crisis specialist asked me to step aside."Please, get her to safety." For the first time in a long time, I felt helpless. I can't even get my sister to listen to me.
As soon as the news about Theodore's escape came out in the news, the nightmare resurface. Now, the whole country thinks that Burton Grove system is not only incompetent, but also as neglectful. The national government is already involved before Burnett was caught. Now that he escaped, the national government want to be involved again. The airforce, the marines, the navies, every city police, and the national security is now hunting Theodore Burnett. His picture is constantly posted in every news, and commercials. It is now an official national manhunt. The president already issued a shoot to kill order against Burnett. Any officer of the law can kill him onsite, after he killed the police office who almost caught him.ABN News:"This is Angela Newman, from ABN News, reporting live. The convicted serial killer, and Burton Grove Penitentiary escapee, Theodore Burnett was supposedly spotted in this train station about an hour ago. According to witnesses, he was we
I haven't had a good sleep ever since Burnett went after my sister. Between the long hours I spent for work, and looking out of my sister, sleep is no longer necessary. Every day I come home from work, Melissa is having a nightmare. She refuses to see a psychiatrist, she refuses to talk to anybody. She won't even face her friends whenever they try to visit her.Our parents are worried about her, even our other relative. Almost all of our cousins already joined the citizen volunteers to find Theodore. And the chaos that he made is alive again. Most of the times, it's so hard to focus on my job, especially whenever I remember my sister."Chris, how's Melissa? I haven't had the time to visit her. I was so busy moving my mom, and my aunt. I'm sorry." Oliver apologized."She's not doing so good, Oli. Mark, Jeffrey, and I brought her to the lake, thinking that i will help her relax, but it didn't. She's too jumpy to be outside the house. She's scared of every sound. W
