Theodore Burnett was invited to a convention by his old colleagues. He felt so entitled and recognized even though he was just requested as a guest like the others. His narcissistic behavior always gives him a sense of importance. Like he is always better than everybody else.
But in reality, Theodore is haunted by his flaws and imperfection. He despises seeing people around him accomplish things that he couldn't. He's never happy when someone else takes the spotlight.
"Welcome one and all to the annual Engineer Convention." The host announced as the convention started.
Theodore scanned his surroundings. He was studying his surroundings and the people around them. He watched as the top Engineers from all over the country chat with each other about their accomplishments, newly purchased properties, and so on. Theodore scoffed.
As he scans the area, Theodore saw a woman who caught his attention. Her beauty is simple yet, elegant and sophisticated. She looks educated and confident but not too dominant.
"Hi, I'm Theodore, Ted for short. What's your name?" He confidently approached the beautiful woman standing near the bar counter.

In the past weeks, Burton Grove's criminal activity was at a minimum. Typical property disturbances, drunk driving, jaywalking, altercations, pickpockets, shoplifting, and such. The police department is in an inert atmosphere. But Theodore Burnett's life is going on a roller coaster.
The woman he met, whose name is Kendra Muller, become his girlfriend in just two weeks. Theodore's pride and self-worth were tickled because of how fast she said yes to him. It's like Theodore is on cloud nine.
"Hi babe, I brought some food." Kendra greeted as she entered Theodore's house.
"Just put it there," Theodore said in a bored tone. When Theodore was courting her, he is acting like he can't live without her. But now, he got her; he's working like she's nothing. Like she doesn't even exist.
"Babe, I have good news. I got promoted to the head of the department. Isn't it amazing?" Kendra happily shared her newest achievement with her boyfriend.
"Good news? Amazing? Have you ever asked me how I am? Have you ever asked me what my newest achievements are? Have you ever paid attention to what I am doing!" Theodore grabbed Kendra's arms.
"Ted! I feel hurt." Kendra started crying. Her eyes show terror, and her whole body is trembling.
"You're hurt! Ha! You're hurt!" Theodore shook her body violently while shouting at her face.
"Ted, stop! I didn't say anything wrong!" Kendra tried to free herself, but Theodore is more robust than her.
"Because you're never wrong! You think you're smarter than me! That you're more talented than me!" Theodore's eyes were emotionless, and yet his grip and his voice were full of anger.
Kendra felt like she was staring into the universe. Lifeless, soulless, and heartless.
A noise erupted from Theodore Burnett's house. The sound of things is falling and breaking. And the thrilling screams and shrieks of Kendra Muller erupted. Then everything turned silent. Not even a shuffling sound could be heard.
Theodore was panting heavily. His sweat is dripping from his forehead. And the sinister smile was plastered on his face. A face that is covered with blood. He was looking down at something. There, laying on the floor, was Kendra Muller. Covered in blood, lying facedown on the floor, with a long slash wound on her neck.

Still a lazy day at the station. I'm thankful, though, I think. Because I am hoping that our city is safe because our station was quiet. As the end of the day approaches, Oliver started to pack his things while I stare at the picture of Theodore Burnett's driver's license. There's something about him that bugs me, but no matter I search for any previous criminal record about him, the bastard is clean.
"You're getting obsessed with that Burnett dude. Come on, man. I told you that I checked him everywhere; he's clean. Not even a parking ticket. He's just a jerk." I didn't notice Oliver standing beside me because of too much thinking.
Maybe he's right. May I'm just over judgmental. Perhaps I can let this go. Exiting for the database program on my computer, I began to pack my things. It's time to go home.
"Yeah, right," I said as I heaved out a sigh. There's nothing for me to do about that asshole.
We were about to go out of the station when Oliver received a call. I stared at him as his expression changes. There's something wrong with how he pinches his nose and the way he sighed. When he finished with his conversation, I immediately asked him what that was about.
"It was the coroner who examined the body of the victim. I asked him to re-evaluate his findings of the victim's body. And there was something that he noticed; there's a bite mark below the victim's butt cheek. And he is confident that the bite mark shows the complete set of teeth. Man, the suspect we arrested had crooked teeth since he was 18 years old." Oliver sounded so disappointed about himself. I pity my best friend. He's the kind of person who always wanted to do the right thing, and knowing that we might put the wrong man in jail, even I feel disappointed about myself.
The coroner's revelation won't help us to reopen the case. There's a lot of reason for the victim to have a bite mark, especially with the kind of reputation she had when she was alive. We will need more concrete proof to request a re-investigation.
Even though his heart was heavy, I was able to convince him to go home. We both know that pushing forward with what we were feeling will waste time without more to go on.
When I entered our home, I was shocked to see Mary Sue sitting on our couch with my sister Melanie beside her.
"Chris! Hey!" Melanie's always the sweetest sister. She always welcomes me with a hug whenever I arrive home. She like my comfort after a tiring day at work. "I'd like you to meet my friend, Mary Sue. Sissy, this is my handsome and single brother, Chris."
I almost cringed when Melanie said that I am still single. Does it have to be a part of the introduction?
"Hey, guy. Is dinner ready?" I then asked. When I smelled what mom's cooking, I went straight to the kitchen. I'm a detective, and I'm trained to detect people's hidden agendas.
"Don't mind, brother; he just needs a girlfriend." I almost turn back and cover my sister's mouth, but I am not going to embarrass myself, so I decided to continue walking.
When are you bringing a girlfriend home, Chris? When do you plan on getting married, Chris? Blah, blah, blah. Why is my love life a part of their problem? I haven't met the woman who would capture my heart, that's all. I don't want to be that guy who gets married this month and files a divorce six months after. When I get married, I want it to be permanent. Not just a phase that will pass.My morning started not so great because of Melanie's questions about my love life. Our mom and dad started asking me, too. They wanted to see their grandchildren. And Mark finally having a girlfriend didn't help my situation.Mark had a few girlfriends in the past. Jeffrey always has a girlfriend. Melanie is in a long-term relationship with her boyfriend, Andrew. While me? Nah, never mind."Hey, Chris!""Morning, Chris."My colleagues greeted me as I entered the station, but I just nodded at them. I'm not in the mood."Hey, bro. What's the matter?"
I don't why, but I feel happy. Oliver has been teasing me about this for the whole week. He kept asking me why I an being happy. Serious? Is there something about being happy? Why does it have to be a big deal? Honestly, I don't even know why I am in a good mood these days. All I know is that I feel great. "Hi, Chris! Good morning." Mary Sue greeted me. I almost bumped into her while buying some drinks before going to the station. "Hey, hi! How have you been?" I smiled widely. "We just saw each other yesterday. Are you okay?" Mary Sue responded, laughing lightly. "Huh? Oh, yeah! Haha! Duh? Right, uhm. Will you come to our house tonight?" I hesitantly ask while scratching the back of my head. "Oh, sorry. I have a date tonight." My smile disappeared with what I heard. "What?" I asked, trying not to sound too disappointed. "Yeah, I have this suitor who is so persistent. Anyways, see you around?" When Mary Sue left, I sighed.
My good mood has wholly disappeared, and I don't know why. So what if Mary Sue is entertaining a suitor? Why do I care? We're not even that close.I feel like I'm not in the mood and just wanted to go home, but I can't. I have a job and a town to protect. I can't let my personal problems hinder my capability as a detective. I need to act professionally. When I got to the station, I noticed so many people, and they were all trying to grab one person. The one being held by some of our officers. The left side of his head is already bloodied. It looks like some actions happened before he arrived."What the hell happened?" I asked Oliver when they finally took the suspect away from the finally"The guy molested their nine-year-old son. Totally sick, dude. I almost wanted to punch him myself." Oliver responded, breathing heavily. Right, Oliver hates pedophiles more than anything else."Good thing he got arrested," I answered sincerely. I just hate crimin
The Muller case proves to be a hard case to solve. We can't find any trace of the boyfriend that everybody is talking about. It's been three days but we still have to clue about the killer's identity. Whatever DNA was left on her body has been washed away by the river."Chris! Captain wants to talk to us." Oliver called my attention, the reason for me to snap out of my thoughts."Okay!" I replied as I lock my computer. This talk is about the Kendra Muller case for sure.As soon as I entered Captain Hansen's office, the tension rises. Oliver and I felt the captain's stress for not having any development about the case. I even feel disappointed with myself."What the hell is happening, McKnight, Angeles? It's been three days." Captain Hansen asked. He didn't even try to hide his frustration."We've been doing our best, Sir. But this mystery boyfriend is like the wind. Everyone knew that Kendra had a boyfriend but no one knows who he is. They all said
Captain Hansen had a nagging feeling in his gut so he pushed us to investigate Bolton. He wanted to make sure that we don't miss anything about him. No matter how many times we told him, he is still unconvinced that Bolton is not the killer of the second woman. So Oliver and I spent two days quietly investigating him. Fortunately, we were right. There is no possible connection between Kendra Muller and Mr. Bolton. We didn't find any evidence that he's been in Burton Grove before he killed his daughter."Damn it!" I turned to Oliver when he cursed. He's been like this for the past few two days. Always frustrated about the smallest of things."Easy man, you're going to break your computer." I tried to lighten up his mood but all I got was a dagger eye."Shut up, man." He then said angrily.I just shook my head and sighed. Oliver really doesn't do well with disappointment. Especially if it himself that his disappointed to. Oliver is a very positive pe
Theodore Burnett already heard about Kendra's body being found in the riverside. He knew that sooner or later, the police will find a connection between him and Kendra. But Theodore is not a fool, so he already prepared his alibi. As he entered their company's building, Theodore saw two detectives sitting on a couch in the lobby. He smirked at the sight of them."Detective Angeles, Detective McKnight. Burton Groves' finest." Theodore greeted them with a hint of sarcasm."Theodore Burnett, we are here to ask you a few questions about a woman named Kendra Muller." Det. McKnight stated."Ah, the police and their questions. What do you want to know?" He asked confidently."We saw your name on the list of attendees on a convention where Ms. Muller also attended. Can you tell us if you ever had an interaction with her?" Det. McKnight inquired."Oh, you saw my name on the list among all other attendees, and somehow, you thought to waste your time o
Burton Grove mourned the death of my fellow law enforcer. They were given a hero's funeral together with the remembrance of those innocent civilians who died inside the hotel. It's a sad day for Burton Grove. But it's definitely not a rest day for law enforcers like me. We still have an investigation to do. The killer of Kendra Muller is out there. Roaming around breathing free air."I can't believe Norwood did it. It's just so f*cking coward! He took so many lives with him so that he can escape justice!" Oliver has been raving about how mad he is for what Norwood did. Even I felt rage inside of me. Some of those law enforcers who died in the explosion are our batchmates in the academy. They were all good people."There's no point on dwelling, man. What we can do is honor those who died by doing our jobs better. Especially those law enforcers, they died in the line of duty. It was an honorable death. Us who were left alive have the responsibility to do right by
I've been out of focus ever since we had lunch with Mary Sue and her suitor. I don't know why but it just affects me most unpleasantly. Then there's the fact that we still don't have any suspect for the Muller case. Guzman and Miller have constantly reminded me of my failure, and I'm starting to believe them. How good am I if I can't even find a single suspect? As always, Oliver never fails to calm me down and remind me that I have more accomplishment than failure. But that doesn't help to lessen the disappointment I'm feeling towards myself. I can't let this case go cold. I have to find the killer."There's another dead body found at the riverside. The same spot where your victim was found." One of our desk officers informed me.Not wasting any minute, I hurriedly walked towards Oliver's desk to grab his jacket, his food, and him. He was complaining, but when he saw our Forensic team rushing out of the station, he shut up and got into the car. When we ar
Oliver's POV"We have a missing woman in Normson City."One of our police officers announced. We were monitoring every missing woman in at city to ensure that if Theodore will strikes again, we would know. After he escaped prison, it's like we were just waiting for the other shoe to drop. Meaning, we are just waiting for another dead woman to turn up."How old? Victim's profile?" Chris asked."Twenty-two years old, business owner."Damn it! When Chris picked up his jacket, I too, did the same. The missing woman fits Theodore's victim profile. We have to check it out. Until Theodore Burnett was found, we can't ignore any possibility that he is killing again. For the past three weeks, we have been in constant communication with other cities in the region to gain access to their missing person's reports."Did you get the addressof the family?" I asked Chris."Yeah, I got it."Without wasting any precious time, Chris and I went to

Every now and then, Theodore Burnett would go to the where he was born. There were so many memories on that place that most of the times, he wants to bury deep in his heart. But, sometime, like today, he wants to remember who he was, and how it all began. His condition made him interested in psychology. Though, not to the point that he wanted to make a degree out of it. He just wanted to learn enough to understand himself. But, no matter how hard he looked, nothing can actually explain what is really going on in his mind."This city hasn't change at all." Theodore whispered to himself. Everytime he visits the city, it's going back in time. Back when he was still young. That awkward teenager that doesn't fit in anything. He always felt like no one is better than him. That he's the best, and no one can compare to him. His narcissistic attitude made him an outsider. Every kids his age always avoid him. They don't even want to be in the same group as him in any kind
Last time I saw Mary Sue, she looks truly happy. That crushed all the courage that I had in me. I wanted to talk to her. Not to tell her that I love her, and make her choose, but to tell that I love her, and because of that I want to see her happy. Even though her happiness doesn't include me.But, when I saw her with her new boyfriend, it was more than enough for me to know that I don't have to talk to her at all. She's happy with her, and that's all that matters. I don't have to ruin anything by expressing how I really feel about her."Chris? Hi! How are you?" I wanted to be swallowed by the ground right about now. I had no idea that I'd bump int Mary Sue tonight. I just wanted to take a walk to clear my head."Mary, hi. I'm good, you?""I'm doing great. Hey, listen. I heard about what happened to Melissa. What she went through that night, and what she's been going through right now, that's not easy. I know how much you love her, and I'm happy to know t
Theodore woke up an intense headache. He can feel that is clothes is soaked with sweat, as well as his old worn out mattress. The last thing that he remembered from last night the ringing in his ears. It's like he had nightmare, only the feeling was too vivid. He can still feel joint pain, especially on his shoulder, but he feels better now. Finally, the fever already broke. Just by looking outside of the burned building he chose to stay for a while, it's almost nightfall. It's a good thing because he could finally get out to get some food, and steal some medicine for his shoulder pain. After realizing how much troubles he is in, Theodore learned how to play it smart. He only still little amount in every store to avoid attention. One box of medicine from a pharmacy, at least five different brand of canned goods from a grocery store. It's the only way for him to stay off the radar."Alright, time to find some food." As soon the night came, Burnett snuck out of th
After the incident at the hidden falls, my parents became more focus on taking care of Melissa. They never left the house after what happened. Even my brothers have been so obsessed about helping her. She's still locking herself inside her room, but she's eating with us now, which I consider as a good thing.Today is my rest day, and I decided to stay at home to help my famil with sister. I was trying to thing of the best thing to do for her, but my mind is coming up blank. We've done everything we can, and I'm losing my mind just for thinking. Finally, I decided to just make her something to eat."Mel, can I come in, please?" I made her chicken soup, and her favorite egg sandwich. It didn't take long for Melissa to open the door. She still looks like she's not getting enough sleep."Yeah, come in." Mel said in a weak voice."Mel, you're still not sleeping well, yet?""No, I'm still having those nightmares. Sometimes, I can't even sleep at all beca
The cold wind blows as the rainy season approaches. It's been a long time since we last visited the hidden falls, but I can still remember how we enjoyed swimming. Melissa was sixteen yeas old when we last hang out in this place, but maybe she still remembers.Looking at my sister standing on the edge of the largest rock at the side of the crest. Jumping from the crest to the base is dangerous because the rocks in the bottom of the pool. I can see that she's trembling, and he eyes looks so scared, but I can't risk coming to her. I don't want to startle her, and give a reason to jump."Melissa, please. Just stay away from the edge, baby. Come on." I kept on trying to convince her to come to me, but she's not listening."Det. Angeles, we got it from here. Please stand aside." One of the crisis specialist asked me to step aside."Please, get her to safety." For the first time in a long time, I felt helpless. I can't even get my sister to listen to me.
As soon as the news about Theodore's escape came out in the news, the nightmare resurface. Now, the whole country thinks that Burton Grove system is not only incompetent, but also as neglectful. The national government is already involved before Burnett was caught. Now that he escaped, the national government want to be involved again. The airforce, the marines, the navies, every city police, and the national security is now hunting Theodore Burnett. His picture is constantly posted in every news, and commercials. It is now an official national manhunt. The president already issued a shoot to kill order against Burnett. Any officer of the law can kill him onsite, after he killed the police office who almost caught him.ABN News:"This is Angela Newman, from ABN News, reporting live. The convicted serial killer, and Burton Grove Penitentiary escapee, Theodore Burnett was supposedly spotted in this train station about an hour ago. According to witnesses, he was we
I haven't had a good sleep ever since Burnett went after my sister. Between the long hours I spent for work, and looking out of my sister, sleep is no longer necessary. Every day I come home from work, Melissa is having a nightmare. She refuses to see a psychiatrist, she refuses to talk to anybody. She won't even face her friends whenever they try to visit her.Our parents are worried about her, even our other relative. Almost all of our cousins already joined the citizen volunteers to find Theodore. And the chaos that he made is alive again. Most of the times, it's so hard to focus on my job, especially whenever I remember my sister."Chris, how's Melissa? I haven't had the time to visit her. I was so busy moving my mom, and my aunt. I'm sorry." Oliver apologized."She's not doing so good, Oli. Mark, Jeffrey, and I brought her to the lake, thinking that i will help her relax, but it didn't. She's too jumpy to be outside the house. She's scared of every sound. W
