Today is the day.
Friday. A day I have been worrying about since I knew what would come. The front of the school is littered with people. Black, red, and white paint covers their faces as the school spirit shows through their clothing. I walk on the straight sidewalk to the front doors of the school, hiking my bag further on my shoulder. A hand clamps on my forearm, turning me to face them. Blake stands, his tall figure sporting his white football jersey over a red sweatshirt. The number 19 displayed on the fabric. I look into his eyes as he smiles down at me. It fades once he takes in my appearance. His face holding a confused expression. "Why didn't you dress out?" He looks me up and down, his eyes burning my skin. "Where's the school spirit?" "I don't own anything like that." I feel embarrassed, of course. For as long as I lived here, I still don't own any clothing for these types of events. Nobody noticed me, so I never thought it was really necessary. Until now. "Not even a simple T-shirt?" He asks as if this is the most surprising thing anyone has ever told him. "No." I look down, my cheeks burning in embarrassment as he looks at me. "Here. Go put this on and I'll take you to get your face painted." He hands me a hoodie that was in his bag. The light material felt warm and soft in my hands. The white color contrasting with the red and black lettering. His name and number printed on the back and the team and school name on the front. I look back up at him, his eyes staring into mine. "Come on." He smiles, leading me into the school and towards a classroom. "This is my number, you know?" I smile down at the hoodie, my hand tracing the number. "Seriously?" He keeps his long strides. "Yeah, it's my favorite number." I try to keep up with him. "Well, it's my favorite now." I look up at him only to see that he's smirking down at me. He finds the room, filled with cheerleaders and other students, paint and confetti everywhere. Everyone's voices carrying through the open door. Blake puts his hand on the small of my back and leads me to a table full of paint. His hoodie still in my hand as I look around the room. "I'll get someone to paint your face." He looks around before looking back at me and to my hand. "Put it on, I promise it's warm." He smiles before walking off. I smile to myself, pulling the hoodie over my head and on my body. My arms slipping through the sleeves, his scent engulfing my senses. And he was right...it was warm. "Hey!" A cheerleader chirps at me, paint and ribbons in her hands. "Hi." "Blake asked me to help you with the face paint?" She smiles at me. nod my head and she takes a seat next to me. I take off my glasses. Opening the paint bottles and dipping the paint brush in, she starts making quick and soft motions as she dabs the paint on my face. "So, you and Blake, huh?" She smirks. "What do you mean?" "Are y'all a thing?" She all but squeals. "No, we're not." I laugh, smiling. "But, you want to?" It sounds more like a statement than an actual question. "I-I...don't.." I blush. "It's okay, I won't tell anyone. Promise." She smiles. "Thank you." I smile back at her. She's nice. A few minutes pass until she's done, a triumphant smile on her face as she inspects her work. "There, all done!" She claps her hands as she hands me a handheld mirror. I put back on my glasses, careful not to smudge her work. I look at my reflection and stare in awe at the neatly painted dots that form a line under my left eye and over my right eyebrow. Three alternating colors. Black, red and white. "I love it. Thank you." I shyly say to her. She smiles and leaves me staring into the mirror. "You look good." Blake's voice whispers in my ear. I jump a little in surprise, his laugh filling the empty space around us. "Uhh...thanks." I put down the mirror, grab my bags and awkwardly head out of the classroom. "Where are you going." Blake jogs after me. "To class." "We still have..." He looks at his phone. "Ten minutes left." "Then, I'll just go back outside until the bell rings." I shrug. "I'm going with you." "Don't you have to stay and help them?" "No, the only reason I went in there was to help you get in the spirit." He sends me a cheesy smile, bumping my hip with his. I just laugh, a small weight that I didn't even know I had being lifted off my shoulders. "Thank you." "Anytime." He smiles. He opens the front doors to the school, holding it open for me as we both step back into the cold air. Everyone looks at us as we stand on the front steps. A few whispers and weird looks are directed towards us. I look around, confused as to what they're talking about. Until I figure it out. Blake's jacket. Of course that's what it is. His name is on the back in huge bold letters. And to make matters worse, his hand was resting on my hip as he looks down at me, a soft smile on his face. How'd that even happen? I loose sight of everyone else as I just focus on his eyes. The color glowing against the dull grey skies. I get caught in his gaze, the heat radiating off of his body warming me to the point where I felt like melting. Then the bell rings. He drops his hand, stepping away from me as he clears his throat. His eyes quickly averting from mine and never meeting them again. "I'll see you at the pep rally." He quickly states before walking off. "Okay." I whisper more to myself. What was that? ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• "I hate these things." Kyla mumbles beside me. We all stand on the bleachers in the big main gym. Everyone talking or sitting and watching the cheerleaders warm up. "I love pep rally's!" Blair comments from my other side. Complete opposites. I find myself looking around the gym. I don't know what I'm looking for until my eyes land on him. And as if on cue, he finds me, looking at me from where he's standing. I smile, he returns a toothy grin. We both stand just staring at each other with smiles on our faces. Then, one of the cheerleaders walk up to him, placing their hands on his chest. Leaning closer to him, she whispers something in his ear. She moves closer to his face and kisses his cheek, looking back at me with a sinister grin. The girl who painted my face. That's her! That conniving, stupid little bi- "Alright everybody! MAKE SOME NOISE!!" A coach yells from a microphone. Everyone goes crazy. I avert my eyes from Blake and that lier, crossing my arms over my chest and trying to focus on the announcer. But, I can't. His words seem to slur right through my ears. I feel a painful pang in my chest, my smile long gone. Why do I feel like this? We aren't dating, I told her that. And she goes and tries to take him, given one fact that we aren't together. But, it shouldn't matter to me. He's not mine. So...why should I care?"Let's give it up for our Bulldogs!!!"The crowd goes wild, screams and horns going off every where.Blair cheers with them as Kyla and I stand silent. Blake's jacket now disregarded in my hand.We get dismissed back to class, walking out of the gym and into the misty air. My hands clutching my arms to get any more warmth."Hey." Someone grabs my arm, like this morning. Tingles shooting through where they touched.I turn around and meet Blake's eyes. Confusion and worry in them."Why did you take it off?" He nods to the jacket in my hand."I wasn't cold anymore." I shrug, half lying. It wasn't that I didn't need it because I was warm, entirely. It was because of what I saw. And realized I'm in no position to wear it."I wanted you to wear it for the game tonight." He puts his hands in his pockets."I don't know if I'm going-""You have to go. We had a deal, remember?""Yeah, But-""Just go, okay? I promise it'll be fun. And I know you're cold, you don't hide things very well." He puts
I rush out of the stands, running through the turfed field, frantically searching for one person. Blake. He won the game. Well, he helped them win the game. My eyes drift from each face, people jumping and hugging each other. Congratulating the players. "Danny!" Marcus runs up to me, a huge smile on his face. "Hey, Marcus. You did so great!" I chirp to him, smiling as I still search around. "Thanks..." he notices my attention. "You looking for Blake?" I snap my eyes to him, my cheeks flushing a deep red. "Yeah, I just wanted to congratulate him." It wasn't a complete lie. I did want to cheer him on for how great he played, but I also wanted to do something else. My mind keeps flashing images of that inside my head. Images that make my heart flutter and chills run through me. "Actually, I think he was looking for you." "Really?" My eyes widen, my heart speeding up in my chest. "Yeah, he should be somewhere in the middle of all that ruckus." He nods his head to the big cro
I hop out of my Mom's car and walk up the front steps of the school as she drives off. A few people stand on the school yard and talking with their friends. I continue to walk on the straight sidewalk towards the front doors. "Danny!" I see Kyla skipping towards me, singing out my name as her blonde hair swings everywhere. "Hey...Ky." I furrow my brows at her peculiar behavior. Why is she so happy? She runs the rest of the way up to me, engulfing me in a big hug. "What's-" "Marcus asked me to the movies this Friday!" She almost screams, her body jumping up and down as she still hugs me. I wrap my arms around her, jumping along. "Oh my gosh, Ky! That's so great!" I smile as we break apart. "Thanks. I really like him." She looks down, a sweet smile on her face as her cheeks blush a deep shade of red. "I'm happy for you." Man, it's been less than a week and she likes him. That's something amazing. It takes her awhile to actually like someone. Me and Blake did a good job. "S
"Alright! Great job today Ladies! Try outs are after Thanksgiving break, so be ready! Alright, break it out." Coach yells, throwing up his hand in the air as we all mimic the same.We break out in our usual chant."Lady Dogs on three! One! Two! Three! Lady Dogs!" And we all walk to the locker room, grabbing our things and leaving. The thought of tryouts makes me nervous and excited all at the same time.I see my moms car parked right next to the field gates. I open the door and quickly hop in, smiling at my mom as she just sits on her phone."Hey, mom."No answer. She takes the car out of park and stars backing up out of the parking lot, driving away towards the house."So, tryouts are after Thanksgiving break. Which is only a few weeks away." I chirp, watching her scroll through her phone and look up at the road.No answer."And I made a hundred on my test in pre cal."Still, no answer."I also skipped class to smoke pot with the stoners." I lie, seeing if she is actually listening.
"What do you mean?" "You know what I mean, Danny." Blair pinches the bridge of her nose, sighing out."Apparently I don't since I'm asking you." I snap. We're currently sitting in her car, having what she calls 'Girl Talk'. "You like Blake." "N-no...I don't." "Cut the crap, Danny. You and I both know that's a lie." She shoots at me. "So what if it is? It's not like he likes me back." I slump further in the leather seat, crossing my arms and staring out the window, rain heavily pouring outside. I'm officially done with this conversation. "Are you really that oblivious?!" She throws her arms up, raising her voice. "What?" I turn towards her, a little bit of anger and curiosity in my tone. "Clearly, he likes you back. You both literally flirt in every conversation." She rolls her eyes. "That's not true." She gives me a pointed look. "Yes. It. Is." "Even if it was, we've only known each other for a few weeks." I really hoped what she was saying is true. I don't want to have
The wind got colder when we got to the stadium. The grey clouds following in around the warm sun.Andrew and I bought food. Now, we're walking to find seats even though we came early.Passing girls gave him flirtatious look and smiles and gave me stone hard glares.Gheeze.He laughs from beside me."You're going to have to get used to that. They just can't ignore my beauty." He smirks, winking to another girl.I snort, rolling eyes."Cocky much?""Very."We find spots in the stands, the hard metal of the bleacher seats cold and uncomfortable. We both eat our food in silence. Andrew hogging his down like a pig.I swear, boys can eat however they want and never gain any wait.I eat mine slowly, hands shaking from the cold.Andrew leans back, his arms slinging out across the bench behind him, his hands gripping the sides for support."So...you and Blake?" His smirks, wiggling his brows at me."Why does everyone keep assuming that?" I throw my hands up in the air, my heart racing a hundre
He pulls away, his forehead resting softly against mine.I immediately miss his touch, the warmth his body gave to mine.A big smile covers his face, his cute dimple showing. I mimic the same, my whole body going crazy. Flashes of what just happened swarm through my head, the memory replaying itself over and over. The image of his lips on mine and the feel of him close to me. Everything that happened, everything that we did."I could do that all day." He softly laughs, his eyes still closed."Why don't you?""Because...I wouldn't be able to stop myself." He whispers close to my lips."What if I don't want you to?" I smirk, some new confidence gushing out of me.Never in my life did I imagine myself saying those words. But I never imagined myself ever getting to kiss a boy, but here we are...His eyes snap open. The green orbs darkening. He swiftly grabs my waist, pushing me lightly against the wall. Then he leans down, giving me a sweet tender kiss. Pulling away a second after. He wal
School feels different today. It feels as if all eyes are on me.That every step or move I make, people are watching. It's like in those scary movies where everyone just keeps creepily staring at you, never blinking.I don't know. Maybe I'm being paranoid?I hope that's the case. It's now 5th period. The last period until lunch. Then, I can finally get a break from all these weird paranoid feelings.I stare at the front of the room, writing my notes from the board as the teacher reads silently at her desk. Kyla had a basketball game, so she got to leave during her 4th period.Lucky her.I still feel the probing eyes on me.I look around. No one. No one is even paying any attention to me.Then I see a familiar pair of blue eyes.I automatically roll my eyes upon seeing him, a scowl etched on my face.I don't hate him.A smirk plays at his lips as he just stares at me, not even being subtle about it. His eyes hold a icy spark in them, like someone lit a fire. If fire was blue.I turn ba
"Blake..."He doesn't stop, not even the slightest bit.His lips fully capture mine, surrounding me with immediate warmth. A tingling sensation spreading all throughout my body. His fingertips burning every inch of skin he touches.I know this isn't right, it can't be right. But it feels so good...Every part of me craves him, it has for a long time.I finally come to my senses, using all of my strength to push him away.He loses his balance, gracefully crashing to the ground, shock written all over his face."I can't...we can't..." I shake my head, feeling a small pit of guilt form in my stomach."Why can't we, Danielle?" He stands up, stepping closer to me."Huh?""Because..." I keep my eyes trained on the ground."Because of Ryder? He shouldn't matter anymore, he wanted to break your heart.""But he didn't." I mumble out.A humorless laugh escapes his lips as he looks up towards the sky."So that makes it okay?""No, it's just that I-""You, what Danielle? Feel bad?""Maybe?""You
Blake's POV:What have I doneI pace around my room, hands tugging at my hair.I didn't think that she'd get so upset.I thought that she would just see me in the hall and run right to me for comfort.Man was I stupid.I try to think of what to do to make her come back to me.But, her words keep replaying in my head."Congratulations! You didn't win the girl..."Maybe, after that, I should leave her alone. Give her some space and time to get over what happened.I sit down on my bed, my breathing erratic as my racing thoughts cloud my mind.My fingers tap on my thigh, my knee bouncing up and down. The other hand up to my face as I subconsciously bite on my finger nails, racking my brain for any idea of what to do.Suddenly, I stop everything. Tapping, nail biting, breathing, everything.I shoot up from my seat on the bed and rush to grab my car keys. I run down stairs and out of the front door, not even bothering to close it.I have an idea. This better work. If it doesn't...I might no
Okay. Let's talk.""Thank you." Blake softly smiles. He starts to walk away, probably wanting me to follow. So I do.He leads me to a secluded area, where no eyes would be on us.I look up at him, his bright eyes resembling a turquoise ocean."What?" I accidentally ask rudely."Why won't you even look at me?" He sadly questions."I am looking at you." My attitude gets worse."No, I mean at school. You won't look at me. Every time I pass by you, you look away."Does he not remember everything that happened yesterday?"This is why you wanted to talk...because I wouldn't look at you?" I start to get frustrated."No, there's more to this, I promise."Promise...it's not the first time I've heard that."Okay...so, what is it?""First, can you answer my question." He crosses his arms."Fine, do you not remember yesterday?" I look at him, no emotion flashes across his face."When I woke up at your house?""Of course I remember." His jaw ticks as he turns his head away from me."Well, that's t
"Danielle..."I feel my body being shook."Danielle..." That voice says my voice again. It sounds familiar."Danielle!"They yell, and this time, I open my eyes.Green eyes bore into mine as his hands grip my shoulders."Blake?" My voice comes out raspy as I fully sit up.I only focus on him, the corner of his lips upturn into a slight smile.Butterflies flutter in my stomach, my breath hitches in my throat."Yeah? What's wrong?" His eyes fill with worry.I look around, people frantically run around, pushing and shiver their way through the doors and windows of the room."Where's Ryder?" I don't see him anywhere.Blake's face contorts into anger and hatred."He left you here, Danielle.""Oh, okay." I softly say, feeling my eyelids get heavy and my body get heavier.I start to fall over."Woah there." Blake says, his hands catching me before I fully drop."I got you." He whispers into my ear.His deep voice luring me into darkness.I jolt awake. The sight of an strikingly familiar room
"Happy one week, babe!" Ryder chirps from my front door."Oh."I stand there, still holding the door open in my hands. Shocked.People celebrate one week together?I didn't get him a present!"Happy...one week." I breath out.He walks in and to the living room. Sitting on the couch, smiling childishly at me with a bag on his hand.I slowly sit next to him, still shocked from this unexpected visit."I-I didn't get you a present." I say, ashamed and looking down at my hands. He lifts up my chin."It's okay, you just being with me is a gift."I feel my heart flutter, a smile forming on my lips."Awe. Thank you." I can't tame my smile. He replicates one of his own, his pearly white teeth sparkling like in the movies. Those bright blue eyes boring into mine, his blonde hair nicely slicked back."Open it?" He hands me the bag, an excited look on his face.I open the bag, taking out the tissue paper. There's a small box inside, velvet covering it.I observe the box."What's this?" I softly l
I sprint into my bathroom to brush my teeth, tripping on the rug and falling on my hands and knees."Gosh dang it!"I jump up and rush to brush my teeth. I brush so fast that I feel like I could've knocked my teeth out.I run and grab all of my stuff for soccer and school and slam my door open. But just as I was about to take a step out of my room, I see my mom standing right in front of me.I scream, falling to the ground from the amount of weight on me and the loss of balance."Why'd you fall?" She asks, purely confused."Why'd you scare me?" I counter."I just came to see if you were ready, you have like five minutes to get to school." She rubs her eyes."I know, are you ready?" I stand up, adjusting the straps of my bag."Ready for what?" She yawns."To take me to school?""Oh, I'm not taking you.""What? Why?" I start to freak out.I rushed to get ready and all for nothing!"Ryder, your boyfriend, is waiting in the living room to take you." She easily states likes it's an everyda
It's like my brain clicks or something but I just remember, I have to ask my mom if I can go.I walk to her room, knocking on the door before going in."Mom?""Yes, Danny?" She turns her head to look at me, her hands full of ribbon and hot glue."May I go to the movies with a friend?" I politely ask."Which friend?""A new one.""Who is she?""His name is Ryder." I flinch a little bit, hoping she won't say anything about him being a guy."Oh, okay. Then, yeah, I guess you can go." She shrugs."Thank you." I rush out before speeding out of her room and into the living room.I grab a coat and some money. And then I hear a car horn.Opening the door, Ryder waits outside in the drivers seat of his car.I rush out and hop in, putting on the seatbelt. He turns to me, smiling."Hey.""Hey." I return a smile of my own."Ready?""Yeah." I breath out, my heart racing in fear.Fear that I might see the one thing that I've been trying to avoid. We drive off, towards the movie theaters.Once we ge
"What happened?""Can I just tell you later?" I groan.Sherry, one of my friends from soccer, looks at me dead in the eye. A single brow lifted up. Then, she raised a perfectly manicured finger at me."You better tell me everything! And don't you think about forgetting!"She stares at me as she walks backwards, turning around and fully walking away.I sigh out just as my name's called."Danny!"I turn my head towards the voice, seeing Ryder leaning up against his car.I mentally roll my eyes and smile at the same time.I'm still very much annoyed by him, but what he did was sweet.I walk over to him, seeing that stupid smirk play at his lips. The same smirk that Blake had that used to drive me crazy."You're pretty good out there." He sheepishly smiles."Thanks...what are you doing here?" I look around. Most of the girls have already left, leaving only him and I."I came to give you a ride home." He stands up straight, running his hand along the side of his sleek car."Well, my mom is
Blake's POV:The bell for lunch rang. I hurriedly rush out of my class to find Danielle.Pushing and lightly shoving people out of my way.I stop at the end of a hall, spinning around in circles as the mass of people lessen. Only a few bodies litter the place.I see a small figure walk towards me in the corner of my eye. Wisps of blonde hair flying about.I look in front of me and down.Molly stands with her hands on her hips and a mischievous glint in her eye."Who ya looking for, Blakey po?" Her nasally voice asks.I take my eyes off of her and continue to look around."Danielle.""I saw her walk out the front just a second ago.""Oh." Is all I say.I guess she already went to lunch?"Don't worry. I'll give you a good time." She purrs in my ear, staring at me seductively. Her hands run up and down my chest as her face gets dangerously close to mine.My stomach starts to flip nervously as she is really close to me."Molly-""Shhh. I know that you want me." She bites her lip."What? N
