"Come on, Danny" Brit whines
"No" I say simply, making sure to keep my face void of any emotion.
"I really think you should try it, Danny" Beth says thoughtfully from the screen of my Mac-book.
I groan.
It was honestly a terrible idea to introduce Beth to Brit.
Now it's like they both agree to be against me and make my life miserable-Beth was hard enough to deal with, now there's two of them always ganging up against me.
"Please, Danny, just this once" Brit pleads
"No" I say again
"Please. Please. Please, Danny, please"
"No"
"Why won't you do it, though?" Brit cries
"Because it's dumb" I mutter.
I need something to do so I fold my legs in yoga position, pull out my phone and begin to type absolutely nothing-but hey, at least it's something to do while Brit continues her begging.
"It's not" she cries
Beth sees this as the perfect time to intervene "You're doing this, Danny"
"Uh..no, I'm not" I say, hitting the power button on my phone and staring seriously at Beth.
"Yes, you are" she mutters seriously "You have to"
"What are you playing at Bethany?" I ask as her face morphs into a wicked smirk.
Two hours later, I'm dolled up, looking all prissy.
I stare at my image in the mirror and gosh do I hate what I see.
I've always hated makeup and basically everything most girls like.
"You look perfect" Beth sighs happily
"I know right" Brit agrees.
"I look like unicorn poop" I groan.
Beth rolls her eyes, Brit bends over in laughter.
"So, what next, your Majesties?" I ask sardonically.
"Well, your lifts here" Brit skips happily out my room.
I close my eyes, take a deep, long relaxing breath and move to follow.
"Um, are you just gonna leave me here?" Beth scowls at me
"Of course not" I say with the fakest smile as I pick up the Mac-book.
"Thought so" she grins.
"Have I told you how much I hate you?" I grin right back.
"One too many times"
"Good" I smile as I reach where Brit is standing.
"He's right outside" she informs with a sweet smile.
"This is a bad idea" I scowl at them "You don't know how much I hate you both for making me do this"
"We love you too" Beth says as Brit blows me a kiss.
I send them one last glare before storming out of my apartment.
Right in front of my apartment is a white Porsche- Macan compact SUV to be precise.
What¿ I know my cars well
Also, mom bought me this exact model once..I flat out refused it and continued riding with Beth.
I breathe in some fresh air and make my way into the car.
"Hello" I say formally with a polite smile plastered on my face.
"Hey, beautiful" he smiles like an idiot "I'm David Cumberlake, son of Caleb Cumberlake, heir to the Cumberlake empire"
What the actual f**k??!
I may have never been on a date but I know for a fact that that's definitely not how they start.
"Hi. I'm Danny Sanchez, daughter of nobody and heir to nothing" my face mirrors his idiotic smile.
His eyes glint with so much pride and desire, he's practically eating me with his eyes.
I feel so uncomfortable. I shift awkwardly in my chair.
I can tell he's a proud brat of the worst kind just by the level of arrogance in his demeanor.
The night's only just started and I can already see it going bad.
I stare out the window at the trees and buildings-anywhere but at him-silently cursing Brit and Beth for making me do this.
We drive for a few minutes and we arrive as some luxurious restaurant.
It is lavishly decorated with fresh flowers, tasteful artwork, candle light-really fancy and so not my type.
As we alight from the car, I begin to hear slow, classical music-can this night go any worse?
It has low lighting that makes the atmosphere very romantic.
We make our way inside and take a seat at an assigned table. The waiter arrives almost immediately, he looks shy and innocent-what I would give to have dinner with him instead of this egoistic bastard.
'Wow, so freaking judgemental. Chill girl' says my subconscious.
His eyes scan through the menu and I lower my head to go through the menu in front of me.
I'm just about to place my order when he speaks "We'll both have the Velas tacos"
The young waiter nods obediently and is soon on his way.
"Uh..I was going to have the Meditarranean Shrimp Kabobs" I hiss.
"What's the problem? You'll love what I ordered" he says, pride dripping from every word.
"The problem?" I huff "The problem is that I like to pick my own food"
Another waiter arrives with the wine menu.
"Would you like to pick the wine?" He offers, I just roll my eyes and look away.
"A bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon" he says as we place both the menus in the hands of the waiter.
The food arrives and I make it a point to not so much as taste it-fancy food is not really my thing.
He munches away on his food, not caring to check if I was even eating which I was grateful for.
'You're grateful that he's a selfish bastard?' Asks my subconscious.
The thought makes me laugh a little and that gets him to notice me.
"What's so amusing, Danny?" He asks with his mouth full.
Did nobody ever teach this idiot table manners?
"Nothing" I mutter quickly, raising my wine glass to my mouth.
I take small sips of the wine while he finishes his dinner.
I fetch my phone from the small purse I'm carrying.
A text from Beth sits there on my screen, waiting for me.
Hey, how's it going?
I quickly type out a reply
Bad...no, worse than bad. He's a total snub. He's a rich, arrogant jerk.
Her reply is almost instant.
I'm sure you're overreacting, Danny. Just relax and enjoy the date, will you?
I roll my eyes, she's impossible.
~∆~
After about 30 minutes, there's a heavy downpour of rain.
'There's your answer. The night can get worse' my subconscious smirks, reminding me of my earlier mental outburst.
"I'll drop you off at home" says the rich snub.
"Thank you" I say, genuinely grateful as he takes my hand and leads me to his car.
I don't recognize the path we're going through but I stay quiet because we all know I'm new to Savannah-what do I know?
I try to keep and let him drive-except he doesn't take me home.
My first real date and I've been kidnapped-just great
We arrive at a good looking house-but it's not my house so I don't really care. The car comes to a halt right at the entrance and the engine quiets down with a flourish-it's a nice car."Where did you bring me?" I ask the rich snub with a calmness I'm definitely not feeling."My house" he smiles confidentlyI want nothing but to slap that sick smile off his face."Why did you bring me to your house?" I turn to face him with the fakest smile.
"Well, tell us all about it" says Beth while Brit stares, both of their eyes wide with excitement."Why are you guys so amused? It went badly, the guy was an a*s and you're never making me do that again" I mutter, wanting to frown but I can't keep this I'm not hella mad at you guys right now"Beth rolls her eyes "So you regret going?""Yes" I answer too quickly to be believed.I actually don't regret going-I mean, I hated the date, that arrogant d**k who was going to drug me and basically the whole night, except the part where Jamie arrived.
It's been a while since I last went to a gym and something feels really off."Hey, Britney" I greet as Brit comes into view."Hello" she beams "went for a morning jug, I see""Yeah...and you're going out?" I ask"Yeah, school""Oh ok, have fun" I say in a goodbye bid."The only fun thing about school is my Music Teacher" she winks."Oh..um, Brit..where can I find a boxing gym around here?" I ask, remembering my need for a gym."A boxing gym? What do you need that for?" Her brows furrow."Uh..boxing?" I give her a weird look."You box?" She looks vaguely surprised.I hum in response before adding "...and wrestle, fight Kung fu, a little bit of karate""Wow, I would hate to have been David that night" she jokes."As much as he des
“See, it’s the exact same boring sound” my boss huffs “We need to make it stand out. I need ideas, people”It’s been three months since I started working here.Jamie’s my boss...it’s the worst feeling ever but thankfully he’s not here all the time. He’s not here right now and Jack seems to be loosing it.There’s a top singer in the booth and we’re meant to produce this song but Jack doesn’t like the way it sounds and frankly, neither do I.But who am I to say anything?I think I can do something to make it better but...I’m just Danny, the high school graduate.Yup, that’s what everyone here knows me for. The last time this happened we spent a night in jail. His words float over us as we stare each other in the eyes.Jamie breaks the silence "No...Uh...I mean, the last time I um...had faith in a woman's driving skills"It's obvious he's lying and usually I'll let it go but not this time- it's been three long months of constant lies and I'm sick of it.For some odd reason though, it kinda hurts that he doesn't trust me enough to tell me the truth."Okay, I guess this is happening now" I whisper and turn my focus back to driving- except I don't go home, I pull over to the side of the road."What is?" He breathes."You're telling me the truth, the whole truth" I unstrap my seatbelt and turn to face him."What truth?" He go
I unlock the door to my apartment with a wide a*s grin because that’s what Jamie does to you-makes you smile so much your jaw hurts.Just as I throw my bag down and my butt connects with the couch, an incoming video call from Beth pops up on the Mac Pro which I left powered on the table.Quickly, I accept it, wishing this damn grin off my face as I sit on the floor right in front of the table.“Hey, stranger” she beams“Hello, beautiful stranger” I respond, grinning like a fool.“Someone looks happy” she smiles“I think I am” I reply, suddenly remembering to ask her “Beth, did you by any chance tell Brit what I like to have for dessert?”“No” she squints her eyes “Why?”“Nothing important” I shrug “I was just wondering”“More than 10 years, Danny” she stares impassively at me and I frown in confusion before she continues “...and you still think I don’t know when you’re lying? Spit it out”“What?” I go for nonchalance
It’s Saturday and I’m out for a morning jog.My need for a boxing gym has doubled.“Danielle” I hear a familiar voice call and I slow down“Danny” I groan, rolling my eyes.“Good morning to you too” he says sardonically.“About the gym though...” I start, halting in my track.“We could go today” he suggests and I nod eagerly.“In say thirty minutes?” I offer, giving his non-workout outfit a disapproving glance.“Sure” And then he’s gone.I’ve been avoiding the topic of ‘The Truth’ he told me about because I just don’t think I’m ready to face it.I know running away from or in my case, avoiding your problems is never the right thing to do but I’m sure whoever came up with that saying didn’t just find out about their past lives or met a awesome human who’s apparently lived centuries. So, here, avoiding the topic really does seem like the right thing to do.Jamie...bless him...probably sensed how uncomfortable that
Flashback(10 Years Ago)I hear the front door open and close.Mommy’s home.Chowders sound asleep. He stopped crying a while ago, I think he feels better.Quickly, I grab my test off the table and sprint down the stairs.“Good Evening, mommy” I beam, my smile so wide that my jaw begins to hurt soon.Mommy just nods in acknowledgment as she starts taking off her shoes.“I got a high score on my Math test today” I inform, proudly holding up my B-minus“A B-minus?” She huffs in disbeliefMy smile wavers. I had hoped she was going to be at least a little bit happy but no such luck. A huge lump forms in my throat and I chew my bottom lip, it’s all I can do to not break out in tears.“Come on, D
