Chapter 4

Author: Like Silk
Dad's words hit me like a bolt from the blue. I looked up and exclaimed through gritted teeth, "No! I'm not marrying him!"

Dad frowned and scolded, "Are you not going to listen to me now? Liam is the eldest son of the Lancelot family. He's more than eligible to be matched with Yvette. So why not you?"

I chuckled coldly and glanced at Yvette. "If he's truly so eligible, you should just let her marry him instead."

Yvette flinched diffidently under my gaze. She hid behind Connor and aggrievedly said, "I just got back, so I want to stay by Mom, Dad, and Conny's side more. Are you that eager to kick me out?"

Connor got even more enraged when he heard her. "That's enough! Don't forget that you would've died in the slums long ago if Yvette hadn't taken your place, Wendy! Yvette has already suffered enough. Don't say I didn't warn you if you dare to go after her again!"

Mom also looked at me with disappointment. "You know very well that Liam loves you, yet you're still pushing Yvette to marry him. Marriage is an important decision—you shouldn't treat her like this no matter how much you dislike her."

I looked at my so-called family as they backed me into a corner.

They knew marriage was an important decision, yet they were still forcing me to marry Liam, all the while pretending it was for my own good.

I tugged at my collar briefly before unbuttoning my shirt slowly.

Connor's face fell. "What are you doing? You—"

However, he stopped talking abruptly, his eyes filled with shock.

I pulled my shirt down, chuckling with tears in my eyes. Filled with humiliation, I pointed at the countless scars and needle marks on my body.

I asked, "Do you still want me to marry him despite looking like this?"

Mom's eyes widened as she shook her head in disbelief. "How did this happen? What exactly happened to you, Wendy? It's all my fault for allowing them to send you to that horrible place!"

She hurried over to cover me with my shirt, her hot tears dripping onto my body. Connor parted his lips, yet no words came out.

I turned to Liam and said mockingly, "You made me like this, yet you told them you want to marry me?"

Liam, however, showed no signs of panicking. He replied indifferently, "Isn't it normal to get scars in a war zone?"

Although Dad was surprised, he said, "Liam isn't someone like that, Wendy. You shouldn't repay his kindness by slandering him. If you continue to be this disobedient, I'll have no choice but to send you back!"

I subconsciously started trembling as I recalled the pain and humiliation I'd endured in the past three years.

Mom sensed my fear and looked up at me. She said tearfully, "Now that your body has turned out like this, who else can you marry besides Liam? We're only doing this for your own good, Wendy."

I stared at them in disbelief.

Behind me, Liam stepped forward and blocked my escape route. In front of me, my so-called family seemed like chains binding me in the name of love.

I'd returned to my so-called home, yet in reality, I'd walked into a trap with no way out.

After a while, I looked up and smiled. "Alright, I'll agree to marry him."

Relieved, Dad looked at me with satisfaction. "This is what a good daughter should be like."

I smiled sardonically.

...

Two weeks later, I snickered involuntarily as I looked at the document I'd just obtained.

After placing it somewhere where everyone in the Sanders family would see it, I fled the Sanders residence that very night.

They lost it after seeing what I had left for them.
