He got home few minutes past seven after going straight to the hospital after school.
His mum was being extra inquisitive about how his first day at school went and even after her told him several times that it was fine, she kept on asking.
He groaned as his alarm clock rang again. It was 7:00am already and he wasn’t ready. He skipped just two weeks of school but it felt like two months. There were notes to be made, assignments and most importantly books to be read.
He stepped out of the bathroom, hair soaking wet by 7:15am. He already had his natural outfit of the day laid down on his bed. A blue t-shirt and light colored jeans. Hair blow dried and brushed, he grabbed his backpack and fled downstairs.
“Did you have breakfast?” was the first thing Brian said to him as he got into the car.
“Yes,” he lied.
“Oh,” he eyed him suspiciously. “Well, here then.”
Liam slowly collected the brown paper bag Brain was handing over to him.
“What’s this?” he asked looking inside. “Oh, thanks.”
He was starving.
He took out the large size burger, hungrily taking a bite and mentally thanking Brian again.
“Here,” Brian passed a bottle of water to him. “You definitely had breakfast.”
His mouth was to filled for words to come out.
---
Liam couldn’t find two things. His map and his way to the physics lab.
Having less than five minutes before his first class of the day began, he really did not want to be late.
“Hi,” a fresh voice said to him.
He turned around to meet a guy standing in front of him. It seemed like he appeared out of nowhere. Almost the same height as Liam, had skin color that was in between light and dark, his hair partially shaved with the unshaved parts having glossy curls. He wore a sleeveless top, showing off well built arms with black colored jeans.
“Oh, hi.”
“You’re Liam, right?” he asked, Liam nodding. “I’m Nick. Nice meeting you. Oh, I was in class yesterday when you arrived.”
“Oh,” Liam replied, unable to remember seeing him yesterday. “Cool. Nice meeting you too. Um…i’m sorry but…where’s the-”
“Physics lab?” he asked, Liam gushing a ‘yes’. “Let’s go. I have physics too.”
Physics class went fine. The teacher was humanly and just like Liam, hated noises and distractions. Geography was fine too and English was perfect. Nick was nice enough to walk with him to all his classes and fill him on all the necessary things he needed to know. His day was going fine and he just hoped it remained like that till the end.
“We meet again!”
“Hi,” his reply was short and unfriendly. Walking next to Nick, he walked past Steve Reeds.
“You guys talk?” Nick asked. “That’s nice. You seem to be fitting in well.”
“No, we don’t talk,” Liam ordered fries. “You talk?”
“Er, no, not really,” Nick replied, emptying a bottle of ketchup on his fries as they got to their preferred table. “I mean he’s Steve Reeds.”
“What’s Steve Reeds?”
“Liam, why are you so cold to me?” Steve appeared out of nowhere, plopping into the seat next to Liam. “Hey.”
Liam breathed out. “What do you want from me?”
“I told you already,” he replied, smiling like an idiot. “I want to tease you. I want to see you get angry.”
He just had to be crazy.
“Why?”
“It’ll be fun!”
Liam wasn’t sure Nick was enjoying the drama as he remained in his seat drowning his fries in more blood.
“Nick,” Liam called out. “Can we go sit somewhere else?”
Nick was a dream come true.
“Sure.” He got up, grabbed his backpack and tray.
Liam did the same not bothering to spare Steve a glance.
It only took seconds for every single soul in the cafeteria to turn their necks towards the guy sprawled across the floor.
There were exclaims, sounds of pity, murmurs and laughter.
He fell to the floor with a loud thud. The tray he was holding and his backpack both went flying in the air, their contents accompanying him on the floor.
Liam just wanted the floor to open up and swallow him. He looked up to see Steve’s foot slowly curl back under the chair.
“Oops,” his face had a blank expression.
“Oh my God, Liam, are you okay?” Nick rushed towards him. He bent to the floor trying to help him up.
His thighs felt sore. They hurt like hell and he just wanted to cry.
Nick quickly helped pick his things scattered on the floor back into his backpack and helped in up. Liam winced in pain as he got up, the pain shifting to his left hip. He held on to Nick as they both walked out of the cafeteria, all eyes on them.
“Here, sit,” Nick gestured to Liam helping him sit as they got to an empty classroom. He handed him a bottle of water immediately collecting it back to open it and then handing it back to him.
Liam collected the bottle of water and took less than a gulp. He murmured a ‘thanks’ and dropped the bottle on the desk in front of him.
“Was it an…accident?” Liam asked. It was obvious he was searching for the right words to say and when they finally came out of his mouth, he bit his lip. “Of course, it was an accident.”
“You think?” Liam’s mind was finally getting settled. “He definitely had his leg stuck out on purpose.”
“No…I mean why would he? I thought you guys were fr- talked.”
Liam breathed out, running his hands through his hair. “I honestly don’t know. What’s his deal? Really.”
“You know I found it strange that you guys even talked,” Nick said, taking a seat next to Liam.
“Why?”
“Because like I said earlier he’s Steve Reeds,” Nick said in a tone that assumed Liam was supposed to know. “Fine. Steve Reeds is one of the most popular students here and considering how huge this school is, I mean he’s popular. Of course, the reasons aren’t far-fetched. He’s hot, smart, rich, has his way with words and one of the best players the football team has. Don’t get me wrong though, I don’t mean he’s an arrogant, cocky jerk or a bully of some sort cause I know those characteristics tend to go well with all the mentioned but no. If anyone’s a total asswipe, it’s gonna be his best friend. Weird, right? Steve just doesn’t talk to a lot of people. His whole friend circle consists of just the popular kids so I found it weird he was talking to you.”
“I must be a special one then,” Liam’s voice was laced with sarcasm.
The door opened slowly, the two guys turning to the see who the uninvited guest was.
Speak of the devil and the devil says hello.
“Oh, you were here.”
Liam sighed. He contemplated answering him and eventually did. “What are you doing here? What do you want?”
Steve shut the door behind him, walking towards where Liam and a Nick were seated.
“Liam,” he breathed out. “It wasn’t intentional.”
“Oh, was it not?” Liam asked, raising his head so their eyes could meet. He stared at him wondering what does eyes meant. He looked like he had a thousand things running through his mind and yet Liam couldn’t place a finger on one.
“No, it wasn’t,” Steve repeated. “God, Liam, do you really think I’ll be here if I did it on purpose?”
“Yes,” Liam got up. “As a matter of fact, yes cause you’re here and you stuck your leg out on purpose. To make me trip, intentionally.”
Steve groaned. “Fuck. Fuck, Liam. Yes, it was intentional. I did it on purpose.”
“I know,” he replied, obviously not surprised by his words. He shook his head again, returning to his original position. “Just get lost.”
“Look i’m sorry, okay? I shouldn’t have done that but I did. My bad.”
“Are you even listening to yourself?” Liam was beginning to feel irked. “Just leave, please.”
They stared at each other for a while before Steve muttered something under his breath and turned to leave.
The room immediately felt less suffocating.
“That was..intense,” Nick commented, reminding Liam of his presence. “But you know, he actually cared to come back to apologize. Maybe it-”
“Nick,” Liam cut him short. “Don’t.”
Nick nodded. “So what are you going to do now?”
“Visit the nurse’s office,” he grabbed his backpack. “My hip’s killing me.”
To think it was just his second day at school.
---
“It’s hard, isn’t it?”
Liam didn’t need to answer, his mum already knew the answer to his question.
Liam had asked Brian to drive him straight to the hospital after school. Noticing the look on his face, he said nothing and just drove him to the hospital.
His mum wasn’t up when he got to her room. Quietly, he dropped his backpack, sat on the chair next to her and rested his head on the bed.
He quickly fell asleep and was later woken by her gentle taps. “Liam.”
He uselessly tried to smile. “Mum. You were asleep when I got here. I didn’t want to wake you.”
“You should have,” unlike his, his mum’s attempt to smile was a successful one. “How’s school?”
“There’s so many things to catch up on,” he lamented.
“How are the kids? Nice?”
“Not bad.”
“I hope so,” his mum replied. “You know you can always tell this oldie anything, right?”
“Of course,” he held his hands. “Of course, I can.”
“You seem tired,” she pat the side of her bed. “Rest for a while.”
She smiled, brushing his hair from his face as he rested his head. She watched his eyes slowly close realizing how much he’d grown. They said children grew farther from their parents as they grew older but the case wasn’t such for her. Maybe it was because she fell sick while he was growing up and wasn’t able to be just a normal mum.
She looked at the clock on her bedside table. It was 6:23pm and Liam was fast asleep.
Just a 30minutes more nap shouldn’t hurt.
---
Liam’s eyes flew open.
He looked around his room to find what was making the sound that interrupted his not so peaceful sleep.
9:53pm.
It was his laptop. It was on his reading table, turned on and had Jasmine’s ID flashing signifying an incoming video call.
He got up, sat on the chair of his reading table and picked the call.
“WERE YOU DEAD OR SOMETHING?!” Jasmine yelled through the screen immediately they got connected. Her squeezed face automatically softened on seeing Liam’s face. “Damn, I missed you.”
“Me too.” So bad he could actually cry. They hadn’t spoken for close to two days and Liam felt so guilty. “I’m sorry.”
“No, I’m sorry,” Jasmine shook her head. “You’re the one having to adapt all over again. You’ve definitely been busy. I should have called. Yeah, I tried to skype you but I just have just tried harder. There’s facetime. I should have-”
Normally, he’d place his palm over her mouth to stop her from her uncontrollable talking. But this time, he couldn’t.
“Stop it,” he laughed. “How have you been?”
“Man, school’s dry without you,” Jasmine groaned. “Honestly, it feels like you were the only reason I still attended school.”
“Oh, shut up,” he replied, playfully. “Is it really that boring?”
“Yes,” Jasmine pouted, Liam bursting into laughter. Jasmine joined in and the laughter lasted for a while. “So how are you? How’s school?”
“Tiring, tiring,” where was he to start from? He honestly missed his best friend but he was tired and all he really wanted to do was sleep. “Really tiring.”
“Tell me about it. Absolutely everything about it.”
There were a lot of things to say about Crawstar but only one person came to his mind. The one person that decided to make his two days at Crawstar feel like two decades.
It was annoying that he came to his mind. Maybe it was because every time he turned and his hips hurt, he couldn’t help but remember the dude that did him the favor. Or maybe it was because he saw someone that really looked like him at the hospital and immediately ran without even looking again to confirm.
He raised his head to meet Jas eagerly waiting for a response. “Let’s talk later, Jas. I’m exhausted.”
Nick either had no friends or just really wanted to be friends with Liam.On seeing Liam that Wednesday morning, he asked about his hip and immediately handed him a large bowl of sliced fruits saying vitamins help the bones get stronger.Technically, that was wrong. Liam vividly remembered his elementary school classes on how Calcium were responsible for strong bones and he doubted, strongly, fruits containing that much calcium.Instead of attacking him with the above lecture, he smiled, collected it and said “thanks.” He was thankful though more surprised.Like Nick could hear his thoughts, he quickly added, “It’s no biggie. I told my mum a friend hurt his hip and she just handed me the bowl of fruits to give you so you can feel better.”That made sense. Mothers were like that. His was a huge example. He remembered when he was still 13 and Jasmine was grounded at
“Are you okay, son?” Dr. Oliver Reeds stepped into his huge office to meet his son in an unusual position. He was seated on the couch, head low with his left hand covering half of his face. “Steve?” “Yeah, I’m okay,” he finally unveiled his face, revealing a distressed look. “Did you cry?” his dad asked, immediately bending to look at his face to uncover tear stained cheeks. “My God, you cried. What in the world happened to you?” “Nothing.” “Cut it out, Steve,” his dad sat next to him. “I’m busy and I don’t have to beat around the bush. So tell me, what happened?” “I made that person cry.” “That person?” he asked. “The person that keeps on being cold to you even though you really want to be friends with them?” Steve nodded in reply. “How?” he interrogated. “Did you meet her? Where did you two meet?” “Here
Brian reluctantly dropped Liam off. He had evident mixed feelings about Liam meeting a friend cause he was aware of Liam’s lack of friends. Liam quickly defended himself saying he made new friends in his new school and Brian let it go.He was meeting Steve at a park close to his place. That was the only place he could go and confidently return back home. It wasn’t his fault he didn’t know his way around- a certain Brian Jung had always been around to drive him.He wasn’t sure if he was expecting an instant reply from Steve when he asked them to meet. He needed to talk to him and the best way was to talk to him. Ignoring won’t be as easy and he could always read his face if he decided to be silent. He was still in the outfit from the previous day. He sniffed his armpits, glad he still smelt okay. His hair needed washing but still looked decent so he was good to go.“Liam!” he s
Liam was losing his mind. “Jasmine, please please please pick up the call,” he pleaded uselessly on the phone. He did not just kiss Steve Reeds less than 15 minutes ago. He did not! What the hell went through his mind? All he wanted to do was stop him from talking and make him believe he meant his words. Why a kiss though? There were numerous other ways he could have shut him up. He could have punched him in the face. He could have slapped him. Or he could have just walked away. But he just had to kiss him.He pulled his hair, groaning the loudest he had groaned in months. He kissed him. He kissed him. He kissed Steve Reeds. His phone that he had dropped on the dinning table after giving up on reaching Jasmine vibrated. He rush towards it hoping it was call or text from Jasmine saying she was coming over.Instead,Unknown number:
The day was going on smoothly. After Steve and Liam talked, Liam found himself no longer nervous to face him. He had told him the kiss was a mistake and thus gotten it off his chest.Thankfully, Jasmine didn’t ask him where he was or what the ‘hottie’ had to say. She was just glad to see him on his return and they spent the rest of the day together with Nick attending classes. It was finally time to go home and Jasmine bid Liam goodbye. She was still grounded so she had to go straight home with her dad’s driver. He bid Nick goodbye too and headed to the side at parking lot Brian normally parked. His phone vibrated and he took it out revealing a text.Unknown number: Where r u?Unknown number: You’ve not gone home already, have u?He hesitated for a while.Liam: No, I haven’t.Liam: I
“Good morning.” It was a familiar face and voice. Liam slammed his locker shut, turning. “What are you doing here, Steve?” “Yeah, good morning to you too,” Steve replied, Liam arching an eyebrow. “I had a nice rest too. Thanks for asking.” It was early in the morning for heaven’s sake. How was he always so energetic? “Why are you in front of my locker, Steve?” “Dude,” Steve chuckled lightly. “Cut me some slack, will you?” “Okay,” Liam replied. “So why are you in front of my locker?” “I’m not in front of your locker.” “You bloody are.” “No, I’m not,” Steve insisted. “I just happen to be standing by the locker next to my locker.” “What is that supposed to mean?” Liam was tired. “This is my locker. Your locker is nowhere nearby.” “Well, that was in the past,” Steve replied, leaning on the locker next to Liam’s. “Isn’t it all just so coincidental that the people in charge just decided to change my locker?” “So you’re saying your locker go
“Good morning.”Liam didn’t need to turn to reply as Steve was walking by his side. “Good morning.”“How was your night?” Liam stopped to reply. “Shorter than usual due to a certain someone but it was worth it. Yours?”“It was great,” Steve said. “Oh, look. Jasmine.”“Jas,” Liam called out to her. “Hey, morning.”“Hey,” she returned his greeting, her eyes shifting to Steve. “Hi.”“Hi,” Steve waved. “Right, I wanted to ask. When are we going to be starting our project?”“I thought Liam was the only nerd here,” Jasmine said, a hint of playful disappointment in her voice.“Trust me, it’s nothing like that,” Steve responded. “I wouldn’t mind leaving the whole job for Li
"What are your plans for after school?"It was a Friday and Liam, Jasmine and Nick all had English. The walk to the class was rather silent, probably because they all had different things on their minds. It was the day of Steve's match and Liam couldn't get it off his mind. He was going to be present, certainly, but he didn't want to be there alone. Jasmine knew him way too well to not be surprised at him attending an high school football match voluntarily. The first and last time he went to one was when Chad was playing and Jas wanting to be the supporting girlfriend, forced him to tag along. Now he was attending a high school match because his boyfriend was playing."Go straight home and sleep," Jasmine replied, not stopping to reply. The trio were becoming comfortable around each other enough to say things without thinking."Um... nothing much. Just chill a little bit and maybe

Bye, mum!" Liam dashed out the house, his backpack on his shoulder. He was late and Steve was outside already waiting for him. After a week, school was finally open. The past one week had gone by with him and Steve being around each other. When they weren't texting each other, Steve was at Liam's whiling away time. It felt different. They were both around each other comfortably with no fear. Jasmine had warned Steve to not break Liam's heart, Trevor asking Liam to do the same. Their friends were aware of their relationship and their parents were in support of it- it was just perfect. "Good morning, babe," Steve said, watching Liam opened the door and get in. "Hey, good morning," Liam smiled at him, dropping his backpack in the back seat. "I'm not too late, am i?" "You are." "Oops," Liam bit his lip, pulling
Liam stepped out of the Uber, anxious. He was at Steve's house. He walked to the entrance and pressed the doorbell. He wasn't expecting an empty house. Trevor could be at home with him."Liam," Oliver, Steve's dad was the one that opened the door. "You're here.""Good afternoon sir," he slightly bowed then stepped into the house. "Yes, I am.""Why didn't come visiting again?" he asked as he led the way. "I was almost afraid I'll never see you again.""No, of course not," Liam laughed nervously."You're here to see Steve, right?" Oliver asked after a minute of silence, Liam nodding. "Thank you.""Uh?""Did you guys fight?" he asked. "Was it a really huge fight?"Liam smiled. "Yeah something like that.""Oh," Oliver sighed. "You guys shouldn't argue. Look at Steve now, sul
Empty houses, shut doors and tears soaked pillows.Liam had never been that glad his mum was out of town for a business trip. Not caring about how much the Uber was going to charge him for ordering so late, he ordered a Uber from Trevor's place and was able to get home in about thirty minutes. On getting home, he locked the doors, turned off all the nights and headed to his room. Tears filled his eyes as he climbed his bed, pulling his duvets close to him.He was hurt. He was in so much pain he almost felt like his heart couldn't handle it. His biggest fear finally came true and he had no one but himself to blame. His phone vibrated in his pocket and he wiggled to take it out. It was a call from Steve. With even more tears rolling down his cheeks, he declined the call.Steve obviously wasn't getting the message that Liam didn't want to talk to him as he kept on
It was just another party at Trevor's with Steve picking Liam up.It was evening and Liam was all dressed up and ready. Jasmine wasn't attending the party but promised to attend the actual Halloween party leaving Liam to wait for Steve alone."You look really nice," Steve commented on checking Liam out. "And no, don't tell me you're wearing just another regular t-shirt and jean cause damn, you'd look fine in even the most simple clothes."Liam beamed. He knew he looked good when he looked into the mirror. He was wearing a dark colored turtle necked top and grey ripped jeans. His hair was brushed and shone. He had Steve's necklace on, glistening as he walked. "Thank you.""You're welcome," Steve turned the car on. "Tomorrow's Halloween. What are you wearing?""Just a t-shirt and jeans," Liam looked out of the window. "Told you I'm not a fan of all those things."
"School's closed for a week!"The unexpected announcement give life to a positive response from the crowd. It was like music to their ears to hear school was going to be locked. It was a Monday morning and they were ready to leave. Liam had spent the previous night in silence, going to bed immediately after shutting Jasmine up. He was positive Nick was avoiding him as much as he was- he didn't sleep in the tent that night.Liam was avoiding Steve and he knew it. He packed his bags and left to wait by the bus alone. When it was time to get into the bus, he got in and sat in the farthest seat.Liam caught Steve walking into the bus and he immediately shifted his gaze. Immediately, he shut his eyes and rested his head on the window."Liam?"He recognized the voice and knew it was best to not acknowledge it. Shutting his eyes even tighter, he ignored Steve's voic
Jasmine's team didn't win the treasure hunt either but at least she was able to come out smiling and laughing with Steve and Trevor."How was the treasure hunt?" she asked when the game was over. "Right, you were paired with Nick. Must have been very awkward.""Not really," Liam shook his head. "We decided not to play in my team.""What?""You heard me right," he couldn't even laugh at himself. "Me and my group members decided we weren't interested in the game. It was cool. I didn't have to stress myself.""How depressing," Jasmine smiled, sadly."How was yours? Playing with Steve and Trevor?"He was curious on how actual playing the games went but he was more curious on how it was being on the same team with Steve."It was fun!" Jasmine didn't need to exclaim for Liam to know it was really fun. "And honestly, T
By seven am, Steve was already at Liam's.Liam was also ready. Dressed in a black sweater and dark jeans, he was waiting outside with his bag next to him.Steve arrived and they bid Liam's mum goodbye then left. The ride to school was cheerful, both having sandwiches Steve made for breakfast and talking about music and food."Hiiiiii," Jasmine excitedly said as she spotted them at school. "Great. We're all going.""Yeah." Replies were mumbled and in unison."Come on let's go," she linked arms with both of them. "I heard the bus would be moving in about fifteen minutes. Let's get our name tags now."They got their name tags, Liam and Steve helping each other put it on. They then headed outside to where the rest of the students were."Do you know if Nick would be coming too?" Liam asked Jasmine, looking around him.
"Did you get home late yesterday?""No not really," Jasmine replied Liam, taking out books from her locker. "You could have texted to ask if you were curious.""I would have but I got all," he stopped to think. "Busy?""Busy? Cleaning up or what?""Nah," he watched her slam her locker shut. "More like emotionally busy.""I don't get you.""I told my mum, Jasmine."Jasmine stopped in her tracks. "You did what?""I told her," he bit his lip. "About me and Steve. No, don't freak out. Not the whole details but point is, she knows I like him.""Damn," Jasmine was obviously surprised. "I did not see that coming. What did she say?"She was cool," Liam replied, remembering. "She told me not to let go of someone I like so easily.""And?"
