Liam stared at the unfamiliar image in the mirror that seemed to be his. It was a Monday morning and instead of a white shirt, striped trousers, red blazer and a matching red tie, he was putting on a navy blue shirt and black jeans.
"How's this?"
"You look like you're going for a job interview," Jasmine replied, from the laptop's screen earning a groan from Liam. Brian had dropped her at her place as early as 6am and got back to patiently wait for Liam to finish getting ready.
He was in for a very long wait.
"What am I supposed to wear then?" Liam whined. "Something's always wrong with everything I pick."
"You're going to school, Liam. Not a job interview or a seminar or a freaking burial."
"Then what I supposed to wear? A tank top and beach shorts?"
"Honestly, I wouldn't disapprove," Jasmine flashed him a smile. "First impressions go a long way."
Liam rolled his eyes as he opened his closet for the hundredth time. His eyes his clothes trying to look for the perfect pair that’d make him look as natural as possible.
“This is it. No matter what you say, I’m not changing it,” Liam said to Jas. He was putting on a grey sweatshirt with imprints and black jeans and a regular white sneakers. “I look..natural.”
“Yeah, you do.”
“Thanks,” he grabbed his backpack. “Wish me luck.”
“Good luckkkk! Have fun at your new school!”
--
Maybe it wasn’t going to be so bad afterall. The school was huge and had lots of students. It felt weird seeing so many people roam around in so many colors. So many hairstyles too. Some even had extensions and dyed hair!
Liam assured Brian he’ll be fine though he doubted it himself and made him just drop him off at the school. He wanted to go all the way to the teacher’s office with him, have a few words with the principal, give the school his own personal tour and so many unnecessary things but knowing fully well that that would only be calling more attention towards him, Liam refused.
“Good morning ma’am,” he called the attention of the woman who was supposed to be his homeroom teacher. It had to be her. Average height, black shoulder length hair, thick framed glasses and a round face. “Are you Miss Keates?”
“Yes, I am,” Miss Keates turned to reply. “Oh, hello there. Who might you be?”
“Um, Liam. Liam Wyatt,” Liam replied, taking out his transfer papers from his backpack. “I’m a new transfer student.”
“Oh, it’s you!” she clapped her hands excitedly. “Welcome! Oh, my. You’re quite handsome.”
“Thank you,” being complimented about his looks wasn’t something he rarely heard.
“Very well then. Come with me.”
He followed Miss Keates to her desk where she gave him a map and documented his information. She complimented his grades hoping he performed just as well at Crawstar. When she was done with all her desk stuff, she gave him a pat on the shoulder, a reassuring smile and said, “Liam, you can always come to me if you want to talk or is need of anything.”
Liam was already sure Brian had said and done things he shouldn’t have.
And if that wasn’t a cue to never talk to Miss Keates about anything personal, he didn’t know what it was.
They walked to his homeroom, Miss Keates assuring him all the students would be present so he would be able to introduce himself and though he wasn’t, he responded, “Delightful. Thanks.”
The class was fairly wide and had more students than at his old school. They were just 24 in his old class block and not by choice, he knew everyone’s name. The walls were painted a fresh shade of blue with less charts and posters hanging on the wall. Students were scattered everywhere-some seated, some chattering, some staring out of their windows, some on their phones and the rest were asleep.
“Ah-hem,” she faked a cough to get their attention. It worked as they responded positively, immediately heading to their respective seats one after the other.
Polite?
“Good morning guys,” she greeted with a smile on her face. “How was your weekends?”
They seemed to like her. Their reply was uneven and Liam could already to a student that replied “Terrifying.”
“Remember my office is always open if you ever need a listening ear.”
No. he still wasn’t going to talk to her about personal matters.
“Well,” Miss Keates continued. “ As you can see, there’s an unfamiliar face with me.”
“He fine!”
“Yes, he is fine, Maddison,” she laughed. “Meet Liam. The new transfer student and your classmate. Liam, would you like to introduce yourself.”
No. “I am Liam Wyatt.”
Hummed responses. It was a good start.
“I hope you will all be nice to him.”
Liam shook his head. That was where teachers got it wrong. The moment they ask students to be nice, they turn the exact opposite. He had witnessed it happen at his old school so many times. It was like a given rule.
And he knew wishing it wouldn’t happen to him was like wishing birthday wishes came true.
“You can sit over there. Steve, the guy that used to sit next to you transferred, right?”
“Yup,” the ‘steve’ dude replied.
The third row. It was going to be fine as long as he could hear the teachers well enough and didn’t have to fight the urge to murder whoever sat next to him.
Eyes fixed on his shoelaces and hands holding on to the strap of his backpack, he made his way to his new seat. He couldn’t tell if people were staring but he hoped they weren’t.
“Hi!” that familiar squeal. It came from girls. The kind he tried to not mingle with. “I’m Summer!”
‘And I’m winter! Naturally, we don’t go well so stop talking to me!’
He had promised Jasmine he’d be nice.
“Oh, hi, i’m,” he paused wondering if he needed to repeat his name since he already announced it less than five minutes ago. “Liam.”
“Yeah, hi. You’re new, obviously, I mean why did I even bother to ask,” she talked non-stop. Liam raised his eyebrows. She was a blabbermouth, he could tell. People like her talked too much and unknowingly tended to say a lot of rubbish. “What school did you transfer from?”
“Dawson College.”
“Wait- do you mean-?” her wide eyes said it all.
“Yup,” Liam replied, turning to go through the map Miss Keates gave him earlier.
“Dawson? Then what are you doing here?”
Listening to you. Obviously? “Well, I transferred.”
“You guys! Liam’s from Dawson!”
He knew he was right when he said people like her talk too much.
Their reactions were mixed. Some seemed totally uninterested while some seemed excited.
“Dawson? Ah, do we have another rich spoilt brat in our class.”
It was too early to have a conversation that would most likely end in an argument so Liam just stayed silent.
“There are only three reasons kids like you transfer,” the boy he previously ignored continued. “One, your family’s broke. Two, you’re getting punished. Three, you’re bored.”
“Or, are you here for the girls?” the high pitched voice girl chipped in. “For me?”
He sighed, doing the best thing he could think of. He pulled out his earphones and plugged them into his ears.
It was quite a dramatic way to start.
---
Lunch time came rather slowly. Classes went fairly well and Liam had already picked a favorite subject-English. The teacher taught well and knew how to keep her attention on him. His usage of grammar was excellent and every word that came out of his word marveled Liam.
But of course, there was chemistry which he feared was going to be his worst subject. It seemed like the teacher only had a talent in teaching himself.
Other than that, he believed he could survive quite alright. The guy who was curious on his reason for transferring hadn’t spoken to him since and so did Summer.
He inputted his locker combination revealing an empty locker. It was bare and needed company and he was going to do just fine. He opened his backpack, hurriedly transferring most of the contents into it.
“Is that your mum? Or just a relative?”
He jumped at the unexpected observer. Uselessly, he covered the picture of him and his mum with his hands. “What?”
“The picture,” the guy responsible for his fright said. “Is that your mum?”
“What? Do I know you or something?” he was taken aback and didn’t have enough time to process what was going on. “Why were you snooping around me?”
He smiled and reached his hands forward. “Nice meeting you again, Liam.”
Be nice, Liam.
He stared at his stretched hand for a while. “Again?”
His arm remained stretched. “Yeah, we-”
“Oh, I remember. You are the guy I sat next to class,” he finally recalled after deciding to be nice. With a plain look on his face, he shook his hands. “Nice meeting you too, you.”
He laughed. “It’s Steve. Steve Reeds.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah. And I wasn’t talking about earlier in class,” Steve continued, Liam raising an eyebrow. “At the party. We met. Yesterday at the party. Do you not remember?”
The dude from the previous day. The freaking weirdo from the party.
“Oh,” he wasn’t pleased that they were having another encounter. “It was you. You look…different though.”
Not that he was bothered but he did look different. He couldn’t place a finger on what exactly looked different and knowing how much it was going to bother him if he didn’t figure it out, he couldn’t afford to not.
That was just the way he was wired. He paid attention to the littlest of things and his mind would remain unstable when something was on it.
“Yeaah,” Steve replied, Liam still trying to figure out what was different. It wasn’t just his outfit and he wondered why he even still remembered the exact clothes he wore. “It’s my hair. It was dyed as at yesterday but I’m back to my natural color.”
Oh, that was it. He now had black hair. Which color suited him better, Liam couldn’t tell.
He was handsome. Actually, very handsome. He was in a dark blue hoodie, grey jeans and white sneakers. His dark hair was styled in a way that made strands fall to his face. Now that it was brighter, Liam noticed he had two piercings and Liam couldn’t help but wonder how they’d look with little stones in them.
People like him were probably the reason the school had their so-called reputation.
“Oh, okay.” His reply was unenthusiastic. He had no intention on getting involved with him.
He slammed his locker shut and turned to face him. “I shall be leaving now.”
“Wait,” he said as he immediately grabbed him by the arm as he tried to leave.
Any normal person would have apologized for grabbing him like that and so suddenly at that but instead he said, “So why did you transfer? Is your family really broke?”
“What?”
“You look a little too prim and proper to be here because of a punishment so what is it?” he asked, his curiosity irritating Liam.
Liam was surprised by his sudden burst of questions. “We’re not having this conversation.”
As he turned to leave, he held him, again. “Come on, just answer. Or, wait. Is it- Ah, this one’s not really popular but it happens too. Did your parents get a divorce and you ended up on the wrong branch of the family tree?”
“Excuse me?” Liam could feel his blood getting ready to boil. “You know what, I’m not going to be answering any of your questions.”
“Why?”
Liam yanked his arm away from his grip since he wasn’t letting go. “Why are you even talking to me?”
“I don’t know.”
“You do not know.”
“I don’t know,” he shrugged then laughed. “I just feel like teasing you. You seem like the type to get angry easily. I want to see you angry.”
“Oh, thrilling,” Liam couldn’t think of a suitable reply. It was crazy. He was crazy. “Well, I’ll be leaving now. Have fun then.”
Steve smirked and Liam rolled his eyes. Their eyes met and Steve was enjoying the contact.
“One more thing,” Liam said after breaking the eye contact and turning to leave. “Don’t you ever touch me.”
He got home few minutes past seven after going straight to the hospital after school. His mum was being extra inquisitive about how his first day at school went and even after her told him several times that it was fine, she kept on asking. He groaned as his alarm clock rang again. It was 7:00am already and he wasn’t ready. He skipped just two weeks of school but it felt like two months. There were notes to be made, assignments and most importantly books to be read. He stepped out of the bathroom, hair soaking wet by 7:15am. He already had his natural outfit of the day laid down on his bed. A blue t-shirt and light colored jeans. Hair blow dried and brushed, he grabbed his backpack and fled downstairs. “Did you have breakfast?” was the first thing Brian said to him as he got into the car. “Yes,” he lied. “Oh,” he eyed him suspiciously. “Well, here then.” Liam slowly colle
Nick either had no friends or just really wanted to be friends with Liam.On seeing Liam that Wednesday morning, he asked about his hip and immediately handed him a large bowl of sliced fruits saying vitamins help the bones get stronger.Technically, that was wrong. Liam vividly remembered his elementary school classes on how Calcium were responsible for strong bones and he doubted, strongly, fruits containing that much calcium.Instead of attacking him with the above lecture, he smiled, collected it and said “thanks.” He was thankful though more surprised.Like Nick could hear his thoughts, he quickly added, “It’s no biggie. I told my mum a friend hurt his hip and she just handed me the bowl of fruits to give you so you can feel better.”That made sense. Mothers were like that. His was a huge example. He remembered when he was still 13 and Jasmine was grounded at
“Are you okay, son?” Dr. Oliver Reeds stepped into his huge office to meet his son in an unusual position. He was seated on the couch, head low with his left hand covering half of his face. “Steve?” “Yeah, I’m okay,” he finally unveiled his face, revealing a distressed look. “Did you cry?” his dad asked, immediately bending to look at his face to uncover tear stained cheeks. “My God, you cried. What in the world happened to you?” “Nothing.” “Cut it out, Steve,” his dad sat next to him. “I’m busy and I don’t have to beat around the bush. So tell me, what happened?” “I made that person cry.” “That person?” he asked. “The person that keeps on being cold to you even though you really want to be friends with them?” Steve nodded in reply. “How?” he interrogated. “Did you meet her? Where did you two meet?” “Here
Brian reluctantly dropped Liam off. He had evident mixed feelings about Liam meeting a friend cause he was aware of Liam’s lack of friends. Liam quickly defended himself saying he made new friends in his new school and Brian let it go.He was meeting Steve at a park close to his place. That was the only place he could go and confidently return back home. It wasn’t his fault he didn’t know his way around- a certain Brian Jung had always been around to drive him.He wasn’t sure if he was expecting an instant reply from Steve when he asked them to meet. He needed to talk to him and the best way was to talk to him. Ignoring won’t be as easy and he could always read his face if he decided to be silent. He was still in the outfit from the previous day. He sniffed his armpits, glad he still smelt okay. His hair needed washing but still looked decent so he was good to go.“Liam!” he s
Liam was losing his mind. “Jasmine, please please please pick up the call,” he pleaded uselessly on the phone. He did not just kiss Steve Reeds less than 15 minutes ago. He did not! What the hell went through his mind? All he wanted to do was stop him from talking and make him believe he meant his words. Why a kiss though? There were numerous other ways he could have shut him up. He could have punched him in the face. He could have slapped him. Or he could have just walked away. But he just had to kiss him.He pulled his hair, groaning the loudest he had groaned in months. He kissed him. He kissed him. He kissed Steve Reeds. His phone that he had dropped on the dinning table after giving up on reaching Jasmine vibrated. He rush towards it hoping it was call or text from Jasmine saying she was coming over.Instead,Unknown number:
The day was going on smoothly. After Steve and Liam talked, Liam found himself no longer nervous to face him. He had told him the kiss was a mistake and thus gotten it off his chest.Thankfully, Jasmine didn’t ask him where he was or what the ‘hottie’ had to say. She was just glad to see him on his return and they spent the rest of the day together with Nick attending classes. It was finally time to go home and Jasmine bid Liam goodbye. She was still grounded so she had to go straight home with her dad’s driver. He bid Nick goodbye too and headed to the side at parking lot Brian normally parked. His phone vibrated and he took it out revealing a text.Unknown number: Where r u?Unknown number: You’ve not gone home already, have u?He hesitated for a while.Liam: No, I haven’t.Liam: I
“Good morning.” It was a familiar face and voice. Liam slammed his locker shut, turning. “What are you doing here, Steve?” “Yeah, good morning to you too,” Steve replied, Liam arching an eyebrow. “I had a nice rest too. Thanks for asking.” It was early in the morning for heaven’s sake. How was he always so energetic? “Why are you in front of my locker, Steve?” “Dude,” Steve chuckled lightly. “Cut me some slack, will you?” “Okay,” Liam replied. “So why are you in front of my locker?” “I’m not in front of your locker.” “You bloody are.” “No, I’m not,” Steve insisted. “I just happen to be standing by the locker next to my locker.” “What is that supposed to mean?” Liam was tired. “This is my locker. Your locker is nowhere nearby.” “Well, that was in the past,” Steve replied, leaning on the locker next to Liam’s. “Isn’t it all just so coincidental that the people in charge just decided to change my locker?” “So you’re saying your locker go
“Good morning.”Liam didn’t need to turn to reply as Steve was walking by his side. “Good morning.”“How was your night?” Liam stopped to reply. “Shorter than usual due to a certain someone but it was worth it. Yours?”“It was great,” Steve said. “Oh, look. Jasmine.”“Jas,” Liam called out to her. “Hey, morning.”“Hey,” she returned his greeting, her eyes shifting to Steve. “Hi.”“Hi,” Steve waved. “Right, I wanted to ask. When are we going to be starting our project?”“I thought Liam was the only nerd here,” Jasmine said, a hint of playful disappointment in her voice.“Trust me, it’s nothing like that,” Steve responded. “I wouldn’t mind leaving the whole job for Li

Bye, mum!" Liam dashed out the house, his backpack on his shoulder. He was late and Steve was outside already waiting for him. After a week, school was finally open. The past one week had gone by with him and Steve being around each other. When they weren't texting each other, Steve was at Liam's whiling away time. It felt different. They were both around each other comfortably with no fear. Jasmine had warned Steve to not break Liam's heart, Trevor asking Liam to do the same. Their friends were aware of their relationship and their parents were in support of it- it was just perfect. "Good morning, babe," Steve said, watching Liam opened the door and get in. "Hey, good morning," Liam smiled at him, dropping his backpack in the back seat. "I'm not too late, am i?" "You are." "Oops," Liam bit his lip, pulling
Liam stepped out of the Uber, anxious. He was at Steve's house. He walked to the entrance and pressed the doorbell. He wasn't expecting an empty house. Trevor could be at home with him."Liam," Oliver, Steve's dad was the one that opened the door. "You're here.""Good afternoon sir," he slightly bowed then stepped into the house. "Yes, I am.""Why didn't come visiting again?" he asked as he led the way. "I was almost afraid I'll never see you again.""No, of course not," Liam laughed nervously."You're here to see Steve, right?" Oliver asked after a minute of silence, Liam nodding. "Thank you.""Uh?""Did you guys fight?" he asked. "Was it a really huge fight?"Liam smiled. "Yeah something like that.""Oh," Oliver sighed. "You guys shouldn't argue. Look at Steve now, sul
Empty houses, shut doors and tears soaked pillows.Liam had never been that glad his mum was out of town for a business trip. Not caring about how much the Uber was going to charge him for ordering so late, he ordered a Uber from Trevor's place and was able to get home in about thirty minutes. On getting home, he locked the doors, turned off all the nights and headed to his room. Tears filled his eyes as he climbed his bed, pulling his duvets close to him.He was hurt. He was in so much pain he almost felt like his heart couldn't handle it. His biggest fear finally came true and he had no one but himself to blame. His phone vibrated in his pocket and he wiggled to take it out. It was a call from Steve. With even more tears rolling down his cheeks, he declined the call.Steve obviously wasn't getting the message that Liam didn't want to talk to him as he kept on
It was just another party at Trevor's with Steve picking Liam up.It was evening and Liam was all dressed up and ready. Jasmine wasn't attending the party but promised to attend the actual Halloween party leaving Liam to wait for Steve alone."You look really nice," Steve commented on checking Liam out. "And no, don't tell me you're wearing just another regular t-shirt and jean cause damn, you'd look fine in even the most simple clothes."Liam beamed. He knew he looked good when he looked into the mirror. He was wearing a dark colored turtle necked top and grey ripped jeans. His hair was brushed and shone. He had Steve's necklace on, glistening as he walked. "Thank you.""You're welcome," Steve turned the car on. "Tomorrow's Halloween. What are you wearing?""Just a t-shirt and jeans," Liam looked out of the window. "Told you I'm not a fan of all those things."
"School's closed for a week!"The unexpected announcement give life to a positive response from the crowd. It was like music to their ears to hear school was going to be locked. It was a Monday morning and they were ready to leave. Liam had spent the previous night in silence, going to bed immediately after shutting Jasmine up. He was positive Nick was avoiding him as much as he was- he didn't sleep in the tent that night.Liam was avoiding Steve and he knew it. He packed his bags and left to wait by the bus alone. When it was time to get into the bus, he got in and sat in the farthest seat.Liam caught Steve walking into the bus and he immediately shifted his gaze. Immediately, he shut his eyes and rested his head on the window."Liam?"He recognized the voice and knew it was best to not acknowledge it. Shutting his eyes even tighter, he ignored Steve's voic
Jasmine's team didn't win the treasure hunt either but at least she was able to come out smiling and laughing with Steve and Trevor."How was the treasure hunt?" she asked when the game was over. "Right, you were paired with Nick. Must have been very awkward.""Not really," Liam shook his head. "We decided not to play in my team.""What?""You heard me right," he couldn't even laugh at himself. "Me and my group members decided we weren't interested in the game. It was cool. I didn't have to stress myself.""How depressing," Jasmine smiled, sadly."How was yours? Playing with Steve and Trevor?"He was curious on how actual playing the games went but he was more curious on how it was being on the same team with Steve."It was fun!" Jasmine didn't need to exclaim for Liam to know it was really fun. "And honestly, T
By seven am, Steve was already at Liam's.Liam was also ready. Dressed in a black sweater and dark jeans, he was waiting outside with his bag next to him.Steve arrived and they bid Liam's mum goodbye then left. The ride to school was cheerful, both having sandwiches Steve made for breakfast and talking about music and food."Hiiiiii," Jasmine excitedly said as she spotted them at school. "Great. We're all going.""Yeah." Replies were mumbled and in unison."Come on let's go," she linked arms with both of them. "I heard the bus would be moving in about fifteen minutes. Let's get our name tags now."They got their name tags, Liam and Steve helping each other put it on. They then headed outside to where the rest of the students were."Do you know if Nick would be coming too?" Liam asked Jasmine, looking around him.
"Did you get home late yesterday?""No not really," Jasmine replied Liam, taking out books from her locker. "You could have texted to ask if you were curious.""I would have but I got all," he stopped to think. "Busy?""Busy? Cleaning up or what?""Nah," he watched her slam her locker shut. "More like emotionally busy.""I don't get you.""I told my mum, Jasmine."Jasmine stopped in her tracks. "You did what?""I told her," he bit his lip. "About me and Steve. No, don't freak out. Not the whole details but point is, she knows I like him.""Damn," Jasmine was obviously surprised. "I did not see that coming. What did she say?"She was cool," Liam replied, remembering. "She told me not to let go of someone I like so easily.""And?"
