Chapter Eighteen

Emily was experiencing a rare moment of serenity. Will had returned from a business trip, and despite the hazy troubles he alluded about with his firm, his mere presence offered her solace. She was making supper in the kitchen, and the scent of boiling spaghetti sauce filled the air. Will was in the living room, checking up on business emails.

An abrupt tap on the door broke the quiet evening. Emily scowled and glanced at the clock. It was rare for someone to drop by unexpectedly at this hour. She cleaned her hands with a towel and went to answer the door.

Jake was on the porch, looking untidy and angry. Emily's heart skipped a beat, and she reflexively gripped the door handle harder.

"Jake? "What are you doing here?" she said, attempting to keep her voice calm.

Jake's eyes were wild, and his face flushed with rage. "We need to speak, Emily. Now."

Emily paused, looking back to the living room, where Will was. "I do not believe that is a good idea, Jake. "You should leave."
