Skai’s POV
“I don't know how it got there. I don't know anything about it," but my pleas fell on the wrong ears. I didn't check the bookshelf. They were not ready to listen. What options are left when the suspect is caught with irrefutable proof? Then, the suspect becomes the culprit. “You need to follow us to the CEO's office, ma'am." They waited and closed the door behind us as they led me out like a criminal going to court for a hearing. I stared at my hands as I walked, imagining handcuffs on me. That was the only thing that distinguished me from a criminal. The sound of their boots filled my ears, and I couldn't think about anything. The door opened, and that was when my attention snapped back to the present. The CEO's office was like a museum exhibit. Everything was in its place. The desk was made of glass, and there was no paper or clutter to be seen. The doors were adorned with diplomas and awards, and the shelves were lined with books on business strategy. Awards bagged with fraud. An itch started under my skin and spread along my hands. My breathing deepened, and my steps were forced. My palms became sweaty as I stood staring at the tiles. He looked at me from head to toe, “Is she the one?” Maybe he has finally done his investigation, and it concluded I wasn't Skai. “Yes, sir, we found the documents in Miss Sophia's office.” Tillard Collin was in his chair looking fierce. “How dare you steal the company’s financial statement? He banged his hand on the desk as I shook; his voice roared in the room, scaring the guts out of me. “Are you planning on stealing the company’s assets?” He stood up, moving close, giving me murderous glares. I couldn’t be more wrong, but he seemed like he wished he had a knife to slice my chest open and rip out my heart. The two security guards are still there; even if he wanted to, who would stop him? “Come on, face me and talk.” My tongue twisted, and I couldn't say anything. That was one of the times I couldn't help myself out of a tight situation. How I wished my office had a surveillance camera. “How did you get access to my office and where the company’s financial statement is?” I didn't even know this company had something like that. “I-I-I don't know anything about it, sir," I stammered. The ‘CONFIDENTIAL’ file in Carlo’s office. But this document was a different one. “You're testing my patience,” he fumed, pacing around the office, clenching his fist as if it quenched his anger. I got my glimpse of the true Tillard. Then, the door opened, and Carlo entered. “Where's Giovanni?” He asked him as if he was waiting for his final decision to throw me into extinction. “He had an urgent meeting.” Thank goodness. He would have flung me out and ordered that I never come back. “What’s wrong? Sophia, what are you doing here?' he said, raising up my head. “She stole the company’s financial statement we were searching for, and I've been asking her how she got access to it. You know the consequences." “I know”, he nodded. “Talk to me." He faced me. I gathered my lost voice. “I don't know anything about it. My office was opened when I entered this morning, and I didn't know who it was or what happened. Until the securities came this afternoon.” I didn't talk about the paper I found in the office. They'd ask why I didn't report. I couldn't talk for long; the more I talked, the angrier Tillard got. “Why didn't you report?” Carlo asked. “I didn't find anything different in my office; the files on my table were just scattered.” “Imagine the cooked-up lie. In fact, you're fired,” he growled. My heart sank. This is the end. “Calm down, Uncle; let's sort this out,” he said calmly as Tillard settled in his chair; that was the word he needed. “The document is found; we have to discover what happened.” “It’s glaring; she stole it,” he said, pointing at me as I bowed my head. “Go check the surveillance camera footage in the corridor this morning,” he ordered the security men. They say it doesn’t take long for your life to be flipped upside down. A moment. A second. And it’s all over. The security men went and came back after a few minutes. “Sir, the camera was tampered with from 8:15 to 10:02; the footage looked strange and blurry. I think someone intentionally glitched the feed,” he reported. What do you do when your only evidence is destroyed? The thought that I refused to think of started to make sense. “You see, she tampered with the cameras – such a skilful criminal.” Ohh, pot calling kettle black. "There's something suspicious. Let's get to the root of this," he said, sitting on the edge of the table with his legs apart, staring at me. “I’ll be generous and give you the right. Either you prove yourself wrong, or you get fired. You have three days. If you don’t find out who really did this ,” he continued, voice like ice, “I’ll assume you’re the threat we’ve been trying to weed out.” The fire in his eyes sealed my doomed fate. Carlo didn’t say any more words, but his eyes lingered on me as I turned to leave. 3 days and nights to maintain my stance. 72 hours to prove my innocence. Things are a mess. Carlo was my angel. I looked at my wristwatch; time seemed to have gone without me noticing. How else would you get to live a thousand lives in the span of one? As I was returning to my office, head down, I saw Amelia. The corners of her lips pulled into a crescent moon shape. So thin. So fragile. With pearly whites peeking in between. It stretched so wide that I thought it would reach her ears.Skai’s POV When your opponent charges for the attack, you’re supposed to stay low, not crash with him headfirst. You’re the only one who’ll get hurt. Aver walked past me, and her eyes glinted with mischief. I headed straight to my office. It was still in a mess.Picked up my bag and headed to the ground floor. Everywhere was empty. I moved past the reception. The outside greeted me with fresh air, the cold evening sky stretching above me. I flagged down a cab and headed home. Everything in my mind was proving my innocence within three days. I didn't know if it would start counting tomorrow. It'd better be. With everything the CEO said to me, there's no way I'm going to stop myself from proving them wrong. I should have known she was coming back at me. She doesn't like anyone getting close to Carlo. I wasn't ready for her dramas. Obsessed, bitch. He was just a pawn in my scheme. Nothing else. Nothing more. Two days later, I was in my office staring at the ceiling, fluorescent li
Skai’s POV I transferred the clip to the drive, my evidence. They thought I'd be fired instantly. Jokes on them. The table turned; I never knew Mia could be involved. She's a wolf in sheep's clothing. Same as me but with a different. Now, I know how moths feel when they fly to flames. The flames are worth the burn. Juliano's rule replayed in my mind: 'Don't trust any individual.' A strong wave of hate took over me, but that wasn't the only thing. Something else, something completely immoral, gripped me, too.Out of the control room, I took the elevator to the CEO's floor. The air in his corridor was laced with silence and authority. My pulse thundered in my ears. I walked with confidence, head up. I knocked twice and opened after his permission. I entered, confidently this time, not when I had concrete evidence against me and I couldn't even look up. Ashamed of myself. The CEO was seated on his chair, holding a bottle of whiskey. He looked at me with the same eyes – calculatin
Skai’s POVMy heart beat sporadically against my chest. I entered, locking the door and resting my back against the door as I caught my breath. What the hell just happened? The wave of adrenaline vanished from my system, leaving a relief in me. Grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge, I gulp it down as I hear the sound. Everywhere was so silent expect from the tick of the clock. If the walls had ears, this type of silence would have definitely made them mad. I went straight to my room and dropped my stuffs. Ripping off myself, I entered the bathroom without even removing my makeup. I washed myself till I felt better, it was so nice to be at peace. The last few hours was hell. Stepping out of the bathroom, I changed into shorts and bralettes. It felt so boring at at times no pets, no friends. But, what do friends do? Betray. Mia and Aver messed with the wrong person. I was always quiet and introverted, but afterwards? I felt like I could punch the moon and kick the stars. It wa
His breath on my face felt warm, sweat dripping down my face, my hands struggling “Please leave me!!” I yelled, my eyes welling up with tears, my wrists wrangled by his adult arms, his grip gaining control, I could hear my mother’s wailing “Mother” I called out, reaching for her hand. “You are weak, just like your father!” He cackled, the dark figure said, but he wasn’t faceless this time, his scrawny smile pushing my fears forward, his arms pulling me away from my mother’s reach.“Skai!!” I heard my mother scream for me, her eyes welling up with tears “Please she’s all I have” I heard her wail, Tilard, my uncle had no ears but wouldn’t listen as he whisked me away.“You’ll make a fine slut” he said smiling mischievously, the last I heard before it was all pitch black and my own voice. Adjusting my sheets, opening my eyes to see the room still, ragged clothes on the floor, the spilled cans of vidkon beer sprawled on the floor, the cold sweats on my face, I used my hands, trying so
I peeked through the glass door “Dad you can’t do this, why would I need a bodyguard?” A young man asked, his hands in the air ‘dramatic’ I thought. “Let him in” I heard a calm restrained voice say from inside. “Sir, you may come in” the young lady said, pursing her lips as she spoke, I walked past, trying my best not to watch her eyes as they stared seductively. “Enzo” the older man said immediately, his calm notion and knowledge about my name showing that he’s in fact my employer. “Nice to meet you sir” I answered, my face still candid, extending my hand for a shake. “I’ve heard a lot about you” he added, taking a stand. “I’m here as per your request, mister Bernard” I said casually, hands behind my back as trained. “Here’s my son, Juliano, he’s the one you’ll be keeping safe” he said, pointing to the dark haired man who sat idly, his gaze was low, letting out an eerie vibe. “You make it seem like I need a babysitter” Juliano said, his head turning to me. “You have
“Skai, your father loves you” his voice was calm, just like always, I felt his arms, my smile drawing wider on my lips until it was all laughter.“I love you too daddy” I said, clutching my father’s hand tightly but the moment was short lived. Suddenly the clean odor of antiseptics, the sharp smell, filling my lungs, I soon felt a hand on my body, feeling a surge of energy, I pulled my eyelids apart, a man in a white coat, his hand on my shirt, a pair of scissors in his hand.“Oh, you’re awake” he said “We might need to give him sedatives” the man said, his white coat, glasses and fragile demeanor meant only one thing, he was the doctor.“I’m fine” I said, trying to muster the manliest voice I could.“You need medical attention” the doctor said, reaching out to my shirt.“I’m okay doctor” I said, pulling out the wire from my arm.“Sir, please… you need to settle down” the man said, I couldn’t hear him speak, the sharp pain had migrated from my back to my side “I’m alright, really”
I stared at my uncle’s face, his hand stretched towards me for a shake, I let my lips curl into a smile as I took his hand in mine, tightening my grip. “It’s an honour to meet you in person, Mr Collin” I said, smiling from ear to ear, startling Juliano, I could see the tension in his eyes, he hadn’t seen me smile or speak without being spoken to. “Please, please, have your seats” Tilard said, gesturing to the empty seats that sat behind the big board desk. “Thank you” Juliano answered, helping himself to a seat, I stood right beside him. “Does he have to be inside here with us, while we discuss?” A young man I hadn’t noticed prior said, his voice unwelcoming, I could feel his disapproval of me being in the room while they had their meeting but I wanted nothing but to know what they planned to do. ‘Is he into the child trafficking too?’ I thought to myself as I looked at Juliano. “He can stay, I trust him” Juliano protested, my eagerness peaked, I stood right behind him, not utt
Enzo’s POV My heart nearly leapt out of my throat; my saliva became as sticky as glue. My face with unreadable emotions. For a second, I was too stunned to react. Since when have you been planning this, sir?I wanted to ask, but the words stuck at the tip of my tongue. It will make his skin crawl more with suspicions. Did he find out? I thought I was very careful. Is this his plan to fire me? I started barely a few days ago. What will he tell the agency? Is this how my identity and whole secret will be revealed? A series of questions ran through my mind as he moved over to his desk and pulled out his chair; it squeaked in the deafening silence of the office. He spun the atlas map on his desk, swivelling in the chair. I straightened my eyes, and the map of North America faced me, reminding me of my childhood home in Birmingham. My eyes scanned through the corners of the room in front of me. “I want you to work undercover in the LIAS group. They're up to something; my instincts

Juliano's POV “He said he'd send the CCTV of the street where the incident happened. I provided him with the time and date. Hopefully, he might be able to get the plate number of the car.”, Zack said.“Okay, thank you", he bowed and left.Zach has been one of my trusted bodyguards, but he's at home most times. I asked him to contact the FBI agent, I wasn't in the right frame of mind. Police makes information travel fast. To avoid public announcements.I sat down with my back rested in the sofa, my legs on the centre table and one of my hands hanging at the back of the sofa. There's a threat to my life. I already ordered for few more bodyguards from the agency. Who were the men that came to the office the other day? and this, what if they're the same set of people?I heard approaching footsteps and raised my head, it was Margot rushing down from the stairs without a glass of water. She looked worried “Ohh, my son. How do you feel?, she said touching my forehead. Why did you have to g
Skai’s POV The room was silent except for the sound of the air conditioning. Carlo walked into the office, his hands in his jacket, looking more relaxed, like a man who has regained control after losing it completely. I stole glances in the direction of the drawer, if it was properly closed, if there was no paper on the floor, a surge of relief rushed through me as I heaved silently. His presence can't be mistaken even if he remains silent. The thought of the document lingers at the back of my mind. It was for this company. Why are the first pages blank?. I saw black and white when I was rushing to return it to the drawer. I coughed to break my thoughts. He sat across from me; his expression was unreadable, but his tone came up with something softer.“Sorry for taking so long.”It's fine; I need to get to work, I said, standing up.“I'll ask Bianca to help; she's your friend, right?. So, sit down.” There's something to his voice that makes me want to react. Possessiveness. I obeyed,
Skai’s POV The LIAS company looked regal from the outside- Gothic design with intricate stone carving. Its facade is clad in sleek glass and steel. A towering skyscraper dominating the skyline with security men as if they were guarding the whole of Italy. Inside, is just a group of monsters cladded in polished suits with fake smiles. The air inside felt heavy- as if secrets were stitched into the walls. The company went on a break after the event, it was my first appearance. I adjusted my blazers and entered. It felt like stepping into another world- the lion's den. My legs felt unsteady beneath me. My head held high. Once I'm in the centre of the reception, the chit chat withers away and almost everyone’s attention zeroed on me.‘She’s too forward for a new employee’‘She’s beautiful and smart’‘Carlo is always around her’The last sentence hit me in the ribs. Carlo hovers over me like a looming danger, a force not to be reckoned with. His obsession increases by every sunrise. I'm
Juliano's POV “This is Rome American Hospital. Miss Aver was rushed to the emergency department for attempted suicide and drug overdose.”Rushing out of my study, I went to my room and changed into shorts and a jersey. Picking up the intercom, I called Tom, my driver.“Meet me downstairs, we need to go somewhere”I went downstairs calling two of my bodyguards on night duty. They came out of their quarters, meeting me at the entrance.“Head to Rome American hospital”, Tom nodded. There's no time for questions.Hospitals were supposed to be sterile, not suffocating. The strong whiff of disinfectants welcomed me as I pushed through the double doors. I didn't want to be here. I've been here before, memories of my mother’s last days flashed through me. She was in a private ward on the second floor. The whole situation was hazy - she was rushed to the hospital for overdosing, and I was the next person to call. It sounded unreal. As I walked through the hallway of the third floor. The soun
Juliano's POV Few days later, I was prepared for the day's work. The gatekeeper was by the gate, ready to open up. I was stepping out of the mansion and the guard collected my briefcase and bowed. I was heading straight to the car as the guard opened the door waiting for me to step in.I was hearing a familiar voice arguing with the gatekeeper, “Let me in, let me in”. Who might that be?. Then, I looked up and saw Aver. She rushed to me wrapping her hands on my arm “Juliano, I'm sorry. Please forgive me. ..“Too late to say I love you”. I shook my head. The ache returns like a wave crashing on a forgotten shore.I ordered the female workers to hold her back as I entered the car. The tires squealed as the driver pulled through the gate.“She must not enter this compound again”, I said to all the workers present at the scene. On my way to the office, I whirls the side glass down as fresh air hits my nostrils and I breathe as Iclosed my eyes for seconds ,enjoying the moment. It really h
