Juliano's POV

“He said he'd send the CCTV of the street where the incident happened. I provided him with the time and date. Hopefully, he might be able to get the plate number of the car.”, Zack said.

“Okay, thank you", he bowed and left.

Zach has been one of my trusted bodyguards, but he's at home most times. I asked him to contact the FBI agent, I wasn't in the right frame of mind. Police makes information travel fast. To avoid public announcements.

I sat down with my back rested in the sofa, my legs on the centre table and one of my hands hanging at the back of the sofa. There's a threat to my life. I already ordered for few more bodyguards from the agency. Who were the men that came to the office the other day? and this, what if they're the same set of people?

I heard approaching footsteps and raised my head, it was Margot rushing down from the stairs without a glass of water. She looked worried

“Ohh, my son. How do you feel?, she said touching my forehead. Why did you have to go out at midnight. I was so worried”, handling me the glass of water.

“ I don't have fever. It was Aver, a nurse called me that she overdosed and she was requesting to see me. It was an emergency. You'd be asleep”. I said, regretting my actions which almost got me killed.

“We don't know where the attack is coming from. Maybe you should work from home for a while. Did you contact the police?”, her hands resting on the arm of the sofa

“No, but investigation is going on”

“You can stay indoors till then”, she said with a wrinkled brow.

A notification appeared on my screen grabbing all of my concern. I clicked on it, my reflexes acted so fast.

The article reads: ‘Young business man, Juliano Bernard was seen in Rome American Hospital at midnight with his ex-girlfriend who was rushed to the emergency unit on drug overdosing. Information says he's in search of a wife, he went to threaten her in the hospital to get married to him..’ with attached with pictures of Aver and me, looking so furious in the hospital. I couldn’t read all

They were multiple comments underneath

‘He went in the midnight to avoid scenes’

‘Rich people can be so manipulative’

‘I'm sure she took drug overdose due to multiple threats from him’

My eyes, seeing not believing. I rest my elbows on the table and bury my face in my palms.

It's strange how certain things never leaves our memory.

The villain playing the hero. A wolf in sheep clothing

I hate the media, they publish anything without further confirmation. There was no one in the room when my father talked about marriage. I know Aver wouldn't have came without a reason. The camera click, I should have knew something was wrong.

Why didn't information talk about her faking it?

My chest was tight; my face was hot. I shook my head, swallowing back the sick feeling rising in my throat. This is not what’s best for me.

I wouldn't be so cheap to provide the media with the truth. It'd make them more involved in my personal life. I have a name to protect. BER corp is at stake.

If she thinks I'd get married to her because of this and the oppression from media, then it can never happen. Not even a contract marriage. I can't stand seeing her.

Acting fast to debunk the rumor was the best option. People aren't blind to my flaws. Now, they'd see me as a narcissistic and manipulator. Most importantly, clients and business partners.

I picked up the remote from the table, pointing the sensor to the TV, it switched on. To check if it was on the TV too.

That was the first news to come up. Margot's eyes dropped, her eyes widening in disbelief. Her hands flew to her mouth, muffling an involuntary gasp.

I switched off the TV, smashing the remote to the ground.

My heart was still pounding, hot frustration blowing through my veins. Margot sits beside me, silent and grave. I almost wish she would talk, wish she would say something to justify my anger. I know, deep down, that it can’t be justified—not even by my worries.

“I'll contact the publisher and the news”.

Silence.

I stood up, pacing the living room, glancing at the wall and high windows, the publisher picked up the call and says, “Rockford Chronicle. This is David speaking.”

“This is Juliano Bernard. Take it down, the article, the pi tures, the news everything.”, I said fuming with anger.

“Mr Juliano, you know how this works. That picture’s already viral. It’s public domain. I can’t just—”

“I don't care, you can, and you will.” my voice dropped an octave.

“Take everything down, it's fake. It must not resurface”

I hanged up the phone and sighs—one of my big, long, something-is-wrong sighs.

She moved closer, “ How did it go?”, touching my shoulders.

“He said they'd take it down”, I said not wanting her to get more tensed.

Thousands of people would have viewed it, even before I was notified.

“Who did this?”, Margot asked

“I don't know but it should be Aver”, I didn't want to tell her the details. The whole plan and her plots.

“You should get married to someone else, but take this down first”. A long silence followed her closing statement. Somehow, I knew that wasn’t the end of the topic.

My mind drifted to Enzo.

We live in different worlds like two different entities, like strangers.

Aver walked past me, and her eyes glinted with mischief. I headed straight to my office. It was still in a mess.Picked up my bag and headed to the ground floor. Everywhere was empty. I moved past the reception. The outside greeted me with fresh air, the cold evening sky stretching above me. I flagged down a cab and headed home. Everything in my mind was proving my innocence within three days. I didn't know if it would start counting tomorrow. It'd better be. With everything the CEO said to me, there's no way I'm going to stop myself from proving them wrong. I should have known she was coming back at me. She doesn't like anyone getting close to Carlo. I wasn't ready for her dramas. Obsessed, bitch. He was just a pawn in my scheme. Nothing else. Nothing more. Two days later, I was in my office staring at the ceiling, fluorescent li

His breath on my face felt warm, sweat dripping down my face, my hands struggling “Please leave me!!” I yelled, my eyes welling up with tears, my wrists wrangled by his adult arms, his grip gaining control, I could hear my mother’s wailing “Mother” I called out, reaching for her hand. “You are weak, just like your father!” He cackled, the dark figure said, but he wasn’t faceless this time, his scrawny smile pushing my fears forward, his arms pulling me away from my mother’s reach.“Skai!!” I heard my mother scream for me, her eyes welling up with tears “Please she’s all I have” I heard her wail, Tilard, my uncle had no ears but wouldn’t listen as he whisked me away.“You’ll make a fine slut” he said smiling mischievously, the last I heard before it was all pitch black and my own voice. Adjusting my sheets, opening my eyes to see the room still, ragged clothes on the floor, the spilled cans of vidkon beer sprawled on the floor, the cold sweats on my face, I used my hands, trying so

I peeked through the glass door “Dad you can’t do this, why would I need a bodyguard?” A young man asked, his hands in the air ‘dramatic’ I thought. “Let him in” I heard a calm restrained voice say from inside. “Sir, you may come in” the young lady said, pursing her lips as she spoke, I walked past, trying my best not to watch her eyes as they stared seductively. “Enzo” the older man said immediately, his calm notion and knowledge about my name showing that he’s in fact my employer. “Nice to meet you sir” I answered, my face still candid, extending my hand for a shake. “I’ve heard a lot about you” he added, taking a stand. “I’m here as per your request, mister Bernard” I said casually, hands behind my back as trained. “Here’s my son, Juliano, he’s the one you’ll be keeping safe” he said, pointing to the dark haired man who sat idly, his gaze was low, letting out an eerie vibe. “You make it seem like I need a babysitter” Juliano said, his head turning to me. “You have

“Skai, your father loves you” his voice was calm, just like always, I felt his arms, my smile drawing wider on my lips until it was all laughter.“I love you too daddy” I said, clutching my father’s hand tightly but the moment was short lived. Suddenly the clean odor of antiseptics, the sharp smell, filling my lungs, I soon felt a hand on my body, feeling a surge of energy, I pulled my eyelids apart, a man in a white coat, his hand on my shirt, a pair of scissors in his hand.“Oh, you’re awake” he said “We might need to give him sedatives” the man said, his white coat, glasses and fragile demeanor meant only one thing, he was the doctor.“I’m fine” I said, trying to muster the manliest voice I could.“You need medical attention” the doctor said, reaching out to my shirt.“I’m okay doctor” I said, pulling out the wire from my arm.“Sir, please… you need to settle down” the man said, I couldn’t hear him speak, the sharp pain had migrated from my back to my side “I’m alright, really”

Skai’s POV The room was silent except for the sound of the air conditioning. Carlo walked into the office, his hands in his jacket, looking more relaxed, like a man who has regained control after losing it completely. I stole glances in the direction of the drawer, if it was properly closed, if there was no paper on the floor, a surge of relief rushed through me as I heaved silently. His presence can't be mistaken even if he remains silent. The thought of the document lingers at the back of my mind. It was for this company. Why are the first pages blank?. I saw black and white when I was rushing to return it to the drawer. I coughed to break my thoughts. He sat across from me; his expression was unreadable, but his tone came up with something softer.“Sorry for taking so long.”It's fine; I need to get to work, I said, standing up.“I'll ask Bianca to help; she's your friend, right?. So, sit down.” There's something to his voice that makes me want to react. Possessiveness. I obeyed,

Skai’s POV The LIAS company looked regal from the outside- Gothic design with intricate stone carving. Its facade is clad in sleek glass and steel. A towering skyscraper dominating the skyline with security men as if they were guarding the whole of Italy. Inside, is just a group of monsters cladded in polished suits with fake smiles. The air inside felt heavy- as if secrets were stitched into the walls. The company went on a break after the event, it was my first appearance. I adjusted my blazers and entered. It felt like stepping into another world- the lion's den. My legs felt unsteady beneath me. My head held high. Once I'm in the centre of the reception, the chit chat withers away and almost everyone’s attention zeroed on me.‘She’s too forward for a new employee’‘She’s beautiful and smart’‘Carlo is always around her’The last sentence hit me in the ribs. The strong whiff of disinfectants welcomed me as I pushed through the double doors. I didn't want to be here. I've been here before, memories of my mother’s last days flashed through me. She was in a private ward on the second floor. The whole situation was hazy - she was rushed to the hospital for overdosing, and I was the next person to call. I was heading straight to the car as the guard opened the door waiting for me to step in.I was hearing a familiar voice arguing with the gatekeeper, “Let me in, let me in”. Who might that be?. Then, I looked up and saw Aver. She rushed to me wrapping her hands on my arm “Juliano, I'm sorry. Please forgive me. ..“Too late to say I love you”. I shook my head. The ache returns like a wave crashing on a forgotten shore.I ordered the female workers to hold her back as I entered the car.
