Alexia.
I was woken up by annoying vibrations on my left wrist and groaned as I pressed the off button on the watch. I immediately snuggled deeper into the comforter, figuring that an extra thirty minutes couldn't hurt anybody.
It was a glossy pink wristwatch that was recommended to children between the ages five to twelve and it was a really embarrassing gadget for a woman my age to carry around. Being partially deaf, I used this thingamajig as an alarm because my usual alarm was either too low to be heard or loud enough to give me a migraine.
An hour later, I was scrambling out of my car and locked it as I made my way through the parking lot. I had slept in for more than I had planned, not that it was unexpected, but still! I tied my hair tightly and left my heels unbuckled for the office. I also wasn't confident that I didn't have a smudge of dried toothpaste at the corner of my mouth, but that was the least of my worries.
"Alex!" My best friend, Luis, called excitedly as she ran towards me before I could walk passed the revolving doors. Her light black hair was in a neat bun and unlike me, who was struggling to get myself together, she was looking presentable and calm.
"Hey, Luis. How are you?" I greeted without stopping and she walked along with me.
"I'm okay. You know, for a moment I thought that you wouldn't be able to come. You're unusually late."
Says the woman who made me binge watch Riverdale last night.
"I couldn't hear my alarm," I lied.
"Again? What happened to your little wrist toy thingy?"
Desperately wanting to change the subject, I said, "Let's go inside. It's really cold today."
She nodded slowly while giving me a once-over. "Your hair needs a brush and you barely have your shoes on. Why didn't you fix yourself up in your car?"
"No time." No sooner had we walked passed the doors, than she held my arm and steered me into the opposite direction. "Uhm... my office is that way, Luis."
"I know but let's go fix you up in the bathroom. You're the Personal Assistant to the CEO of this company, the least you can do is look presentable."
"I'm always presentable. Today wasn't intentional," I defended as she quickly began to brush my hair after we had entered the bathroom.
"It's funny how you can set up a successful business meeting yet fail to do trivial personal tasks at times." I smiled as she patted my head and she continued, "For a twenty-six year old woman, you're such a child."
"I can't help it," I said, wincing when she practically tore through a knot of hair. "I'm used to taking care of others and please, have mercy on my scalp."
She rolled her eyes. "Of course. Look at the time." She put the hairbrush back in her handbag and sighed. "I'm sure that you have your shoe issue covered so, I'll be on my way."
With that, she walked out of the bathroom, leaving me to mumble, "See you at lunch," to myself while buckling the straps on my shoes. She probably had already began her work so, I was grateful that she made time to help me out.
I walked out and after waiting for a few minutes, I entered an elevator. I worked on the highest floor of the building and was the P.A of Mr. Daniel Clarkson. A sixy-two year old billionaire who owned this company amongst many others. I loved my job and enjoyed being seen as an asset by the boss because of my efficiency. Despite my hearing problem, Mr. Clarkson didn't treat me differently from the others and for that, I was extremely grateful.
Inside the elevator were two men who were engaged in a conversation. I stood at a corner to avoid being noticed but one man turned to me after a while.
"Have you heard? Th.... Since it's kinda craz..... In the compa...... The boss' son didn't...... Immidiat....... Haha, right?" He whispered.
I blinked in confusion. "Excuse me?"
His eyes widened. "Oh, I forgot. You're the deaf girl," he said a little louder. "Nevermind." And he turned to continue talking to the other person.
My mood died down as I leaned on the cold metal and wished that I could become one with it and vanish. These people were only loud enough when they were saying hurtful things.
The deaf girl, huh?
When the elevator reached my floor, I quickly got out and made my way to my station which was in front - but at the side - of Mr. Clarkson's office door. I put my bag on the wooden table and sat down. Taking out my notepad, I made sure that I had everything well set on the boss' schedule for the day. He was in, so I knocked lightly on the door.
"Come on in," the rough voice replied and I felt a little sad for him as I did occasionally. He was getting old but had no successor.
Wait, what was the man in the elevator saying? The boss' son? Well, we had a lot of bosses and heads of departments but could it be this boss or another?
I got in and smiled at him. "Good morning, sir."
He looked up from his computer and returned my smile. "Morning Ariana, you look younger. Did you dye your hair?"
"It's Alexia, sir," I corrected as politely as I could, "and my hair's always been like this."
I had been working for him for four years and he still got my name wrong. It was either due to aging or he just didn't care. I didn't mind it though. I was getting paid very well so, he could call me Ariana for as long as he liked.
"Sorry." He chuckled. "I keep on forgetting."
"I don't mind." Clearing my throat, I began, "This is your schedule for today. At nine a.m, you have a meeting with Betl-"
"Wait. Leave my schedule with me. I have another job for you today," he interrupted as he tapped the table, indicating that I should put the notepad there.
I rose a skeptical brow. "Yes?"
"My son, Michael, will be taking over next week," he lowered his voice and I didn't catch the last part that he mumbled.
"Sorry but may you please repeat the last part?"
He nodded with an apologetic smile and said a little louder, "He's coming back from Portugal today. He's never been interested in the family business but he's my oldest son. Circumstances of him taking over are inevitable. I need you to throw a welcoming party for him this Saturday."
"Of course. What does he look like?"
"Well...." He scratched the back of his head in mild embarrasment. "I'm not very sure. I haven't seen him in twelve years."
As surprised as I was, I kept my composure. The last thing I wanted was for him to get uncomfortable but how was I supposed to know what he looked like when his own father didn't?
"Don't you have a picture somewhere?" I asked.
"I will ask my older brother. Michael has been living with him since his mother and I divorced. Anyway, the weekend is close and I hope that you'll throw something simple." His facial expression softened. "Something I remember vividly about him was that he hated being showy or overly classy."
"No problem, sir. I'll do my best to meet your standards." I hesitantly put the notepad next to his computer. "Are you sure that you're going to be okay alone?"
"I'll have someone else help me. You're the only one I trust with this party, Andrea."
"Yes.... Sir?" I asked in confusion.
Andrea? That was new. Well, I guess that I should at least give him a point for sticking to the first letter of my name.
He smiled. "Go back to work and start the preparations as soon as you can. How much will you need? A couple of thousands? A million maybe?"
"That's not necessary, sir. You said that your son hates being showy, so it will just be a small get-together. I'll present the budget tomorrow."
He nodded. "Okay. Thanks a lot."
"No. Thank you."
With his permission, I left the room with a small smile on my face as my bad mood cleared over. I was glad to be given an important job right off the bat and seeing how fondly he spoke of his son, it made me feel like I was doing something very special.
Hello, dearest reader! Thanks for giving my book a chance and I hope that you enjoy it. Kindly give gems and leave a review. It'll motivate me and make my day!
Alexia. "What!?" Luis exclaimed in surprise. "The boss has a son?" "Seems like it," I answered as I took a warm fry into my mouth, observing the overexcited specimen seated across from me. "Judging from how hot the boss looked in the old company pictures, I bet that he's a major hottie as well." I laughed. "Is that seriously all you care about?" "What else should I care about?" She asked, confused. I hummed. "What if he's not a good boss? How is his temper?" "Girl, thats none of my business. Besides, anybody having you as a Personal Assistant - bad temperament and all - would instantly have their heart softened." I smiled in amusement at that and leaned back into my chair. "And what makes you so sure about that?" "You just have that kind of affect on people." It was probably just pity. "Anyway, we'll have a new boss next week, Luis. So what if he is a greek god?" Her eyes widened in surprise. "So what? I can kill to be you." "Being me is not fun," I assured and she responde
Michael. I yawned as I steered my car into the underground parking lot, hoping that I was at the right place or rather, in the right mind. After playing hooky for an hour, I decided to give the employees a break and actually come to this lousy party. The booze must be worth it or else someone's going to die tonight. Suddenly receiving an email from my father after twelve years, requesting for me to take over his company, gave my peaceful life a complete one-eighty degree flip. Although I was an Accounts graduate, my whole life has been centered on photography. The thing that shocked me the most wasn't the request in it but the person who sent it. My father never had much interest in me. I thought that he'd give the company to my goody-two-shoes younger brother who, last time I checked, was such a devoted ass kisser. I looked around and noticing that nobody was there, I slowed my car down before looking into the compartment under the radio for my pack of gum. I suddenly heard a loud
Alexia. It was soon time for lunch and I went to get Michael something to eat. I didn't know what he liked but when I asked, he said that anything was good. Which wasn't saying much, if you ask me. I wanted to get him something that suited his tastes but the variety I was given made me nervous because of how broad it was. Michael and I had been working together for three days now and he didn't talk to me much. Apart from the greetings we exchanged in the mornings and him ordering me around, we've never really gotten to know each other at all. It troubled me that I was still new to him and him new to me. I preferred knowing everything I was allowed to know about my boss to avoid mistakes. I had just arrived from an international restaurant that sold amazing pasta and beef stew. Running errands for his father really paid off because I knew all the reliable and wonderful places for food, wine and social and business ga
Alexia. Friday finally arrived and saying that I was glad was an understatement. We finished work three hours earlier than usual and I could hear the weekend whispering my name. I had just saved the document that I was working on and leaned back into my chair with a relieved sigh. Closing my eyes, I ran my hand over my face and allowed relaxation to take over my entire being. "Don't you dare drop dead on me." I opened my eyes to see Luis walking towards me with a playful smile on her face. She had a black handbag and a few documents with her so, she must've been done with her work for the day. I smiled at her. "Don't worry. I still have a long life ahead of me." She sat at the edge of my desk. "Guess what I heard?" "What?" "It's about Saturday," she said as she gave me a stern look and the smile that graced her features was suddenly out of sight. I sat upright. "I just tripped. You know how clumsy I get sometimes." Her jaw dropped. "Seriously? You're not honest at all. Kendra,
Alexia. I squatted on the floor and pulled out my clothes from the dryer before putting them in a basket. Standing up, I put the basket on top of the dryer and walked into the kitchen. That was the last cleaning I had to do for the day and I felt extremely bored. I pored some snacks into Cookie's bowl and put it in front of her along with a bowl of water. She was given to me by my mother as a birthday present last year. My mom constantly said that I was too isolated and needed company that wasn't only Luis and Tony. Luckily, Cookie wasn't difficult to hear and her cheerful attitude never failed to put me in high spirits. My school life, wasn't so smooth sailing. Although I got good grades and had an acceptable number of friends, there were always a few stereotypes here and there. It was either them making fun of you because of your disability or them getting all sympathetic and treating you like a "special" patient. Was it so difficult to treat everybody the same? I understood and a
Micheal. "It's been a pleasure working with you," an old dark haired man with a really bushy beard said as he shook my hand. "It's been a pleasure working with you too, Mr...." "Leonard Smith," Alexia whispered to me. "Mr. Smith," I completed with a smile. "You've really inherited your father's work ethic. It's good," Leonard said. "I hope that we do business again." "Likewise." I was from attending a meeting with some business associates that my father couldn't really work with because they demanded ludicrous amounts of money at every meeting. I felt a strong sense of pride at making them come to terms with a much more agreeable profit split. This was the first business meeting that I've ever attended at Clarkson Corperation. It was scary at the beginning because I didn't know anybody and I had a feeling that most of them didn't trust me. Luckily, Alexia was with me and told me the
Alexia. I stood at the corner of Michael's office as I poured coffee into a white mug that was on top of a short mahogany table that stood at the centre of Michael's office. This office was quite large. When you walked in, you'd be met by a medium, circle shaped rug that was at the centre of the room with the table on it. His desk and file storage units were behind that and a large, potted plant stood on each corner of his work space. On the left, the entire wall was actually a window and it gave veiw to the beautiful scenery around. Hearing the door open, I looked at Michael and greeted, "Good morning, sir." "Good morning, Alex," Michael replied as he closed the door behind him. He then stood next to me and looked at the mug. "What are you doing?" "I decided to make you some coffee early, so that you could find it when you arrive." "Where's yours?" "I'll buy mine downstairs." He hummed. "I thought I made it clear that I had no problem eating with you. Let's eat together from no
Alexia. The City of Venice, Italy. It's been a dream of mine to visit Italy and coming to Venice was an absolute plus. I looked at the beautiful stars that illuminated the night sky through every window we walked passed as we made our way to our rooms at the top floor of our hotel. A wide grin spread across my face as I drank in the elegance of the halls and the fancy interior. "Someone's looking pretty happy," Michael said, occupying the space on my right, and he playfully nudged my shoulder with his own. "I'm excited." I looked at him. "I've always wanted to come here but I've never had the chance." He nodded understandingly. "Then I'm glad that you got to experience this." "It's just for business anyway," I said with a longing sigh. "I don't think that I'll have the time to explore." He chuckled. "We won't be attending meetings all day and the last day is a bit of a free day." "It's still a little time for someone who has never been here," I said, a little bummed that we'd o
Alexia. "I had a talk with the wedding planner yesterday and let me just say, the lady knows what she's doing," Luis said as she poured a bit of milk into a bowl and mixed it all together. I laughed. "I almost thought that you were going to complain." "Why would I complain?" She began to mix the dough. "The woman's a goddess." "I was worried that you wouldn't like her." She looked up at me and grinned. "Well, despite being a chatterbox, she's damn good at her work." "You're a chatterbox as well." I laughed and got the bowl from her before pouring it's contents into a baking tray. Luis and I were baking cupcakes for desert. Tonight, we were all gathering for a family dinner at my house and Luis and I decided to cook up something more refined than our everyday meals. I was a little disappointed that Michael's dad couldn't make it. He said that it was because he was busy but I felt like it was be
Micheal. My eyes were heavy and I felt like I was floating in an endless, dark void. The sounds around me were muffled and my temples had a mild ache. The pain in my chest was minimized though. I could breathe better and the tightness that I felt earlier was gone. My mind drifted to what happened at the cafe. When Bianca drove that knife into me, I was shocked. Even more than that, I was scared. I didn't want to die. I didn't want to leave my family, Alexia and my unborn child behind. I could barely remember what happened after that. My memory was fuzzy and Bianca was saying something that my ears couldn't register. A part of me felt bad for her. I didn't think that she'd be pushed so much into a corner and thoughtlessly attack me. Maybe she planned it. Who knows? But I was dumb for not considering it. That woman was crazy and I hoped that wherever she was right now, she could get help. I groaned and tried to move my body but I couldn't. I had to wake up. I didn't want to die. Ale
Alexia. "I didn't expect the Head of Department to do that," Luis said with a laugh. "He doesn't look like the type." "Well, there's more to people than what meets the eye," I said before looking up at her. She was seated at the corner of my table and was telling me about how her supervisor suddenly cracked a joke that completely put her department in shock. Hearing that the joke was actually funny took me by surprise as well. Mr. Johnson, her supervisor, was known as a strict man who talked as much as he smiled. Which wasn't much. "Exactly. It makes me want to be more aware of the people around me. Maybe I should approach Grace. She's the most introverted person in the office," she pondered loudly. "Don't go around harassing your co-workers." "I'm not harassing them. It's called socializing." "Don't take it too far though." I thought for a moment and asked, "Hey, won't you be yelled at for slacking off here?" "I'm not slacking off. I've come to pay you a visit." "During work
Michael. The day gradually became hotter as the afternoon approached and I loosened my tie to allow space for breathing. I looked at my phone. It's been over a week and Bianca hadn't tried to communicate with me. Didn't Madison tell her anything? I looked at the ceiling and sighed. The private investigator, that Gabe hired, followed Bianca after she met up with some friends and found out that she was staying in an apartment on the other side of the city. I didn't want to follow her to her house but if she didn't reach out to me soon, I'd have to start considering it. The case about Alexia's apartment didn't seem to be going anywhere and I wasn't happy about that. I wasn't in a position to press charges against Bianca since I didn't have any evidence and nothing could connect her to this. I wanted to at least have a talk with her so that we could sort this out as soon as possible. I heard the door swing open and I looked up at Alexia, who had just entered my office with a red file
Michael. Click. The soft shutter of my camera registered in my ears, making me hum in appreciation. I looked at the pictures that I had been taking for a while and brought the camera back to my face to take more pictures. I smiled as I watched Alexia and Luis play in the water. They were laughing as they splashed water on each other and talked. My heart warmed up at how great the day was going and I felt fulfilled to spend so much time with these people. Taking pictures with my camera fully awoke the photographer in me and before I knew it, I couldn't put it down. I started taking pictures of the sky, the trees, the water and with consent; some strangers. I had fun and I looked at the warm sand under my feet. Closing my eyes for a moment, I basked under the sun and opened my eyes to look at anything else that I could take a photo of. "You're sucked into that camera, huh?" Tony said as he stood next to me and kept his eyes ahead. I chuckled. "It's been a while since I've taken ph
Michael. The day was finally done and after paying the doctor a visit, we went back home. The drive was slow and I appreciated that the driver did so. Alexia rested her head on my shoulder as she dozed off and I kept my gaze at the passing houses and pedestrians outside. Fortunately, there was nothing wrong with the baby although we were told to be careful. Alexia was also given some medication for a few days and I hoped that they would do their part. The car slowed down when we reached the front of the house and lightly tapped Alexia's cheek, making her sit up with a groan. "We're home," I said with a light chuckle as she wiped a trail of drool from her cheek. "Oh, my God, I'm sorry," she said and wiped my shoulder with the sleeve of her blazer. "I never drool. I wonder what happened today." "You're tired. Let's go inside." "Yeah." I got out of the car and offered her my hand as I helped her out. Yawning, she held my arm and we walked into the house. I looked up at Jim, who wa
Alexia. "Is that all?" Michael asked as he watched me walk down the stairs and I nodded. "I hope so. I'm so sorry about this," I said apologetically. He smiled at me. "It's okay. You didn't do it on purpose." "I still feel bad though." I reached the bottom of the stairs and we quickly walked out of the house. The car was already parked and ready when we walked passed the doors and Michael walked to the other side of the car. Opening the door to the backseat, I put my handbag and some files on the seat before sliding into the car. I looked at Michael, who was seated next to me, and he was looking at his phone. I could see that he was impatient but he didn't express it in words. I felt guilty. It was only my first day here and I made us late. The morning started horrible and I spent the first few hours, vomiting and groaning on the bathroom floor. Michael stayed until I was okay despite being ready before me. I told him to go on. That I'll be okay but he didn't listen to me. Mich
Michael. I tried to calm my racing heart as I tapped my foot impatiently against the metal floor of the elevator. Couldn't this thing go any faster? Just as I was about to leave the office after working overtime, I received a call from Alexia. Picking it up, it was actually Luis who called and she said that somebody had broken into, and trashed, Alexia's apartment. I was baffled. Alexia's apartment had good security so, how could this be? I sighed as I looked at the numbers nearing Alexia's floor and prayed to the greater being above that she was okay. The bell of the elevator made my heart jump and I pushed past the sliding doors before they could fully open. I felt more anxious at the sight of two police officers standing outside the apartment. Some of the neighbours stood in front of their doors as they looked at the scene in worry and curiousity. I quickly spotted Luis because the red dress that she wore stood out from the colours ahead of me. She held Alexia's hands while she
Alexia.I hummed as I examined the document in front of me. Being unsure of what to do with it, I forwarded it to Michael and began to work on another document. Michael and I had got back a few days ago and we were back on schedule the very next day. To be honest, I felt like we took too many leave days this month and I was slightly embarrassed for taking advantage of them. I was happy to have talked with my parents and caught up with them. I was especially glad over how close Michael and my father had gotten over the short period of time that we were there. They spent most of their time together and the only time that Michael and I could properly enjoy each other's company was when it was time for bed. I found it quite amusing since my father wasn't very interested in befriending the people around me. He was a little judgmental towards others and used intimidation as a respect route since he was a short man. Despite that, he had a warm heart and I loved him to bits. My mother tal
