Anna

Two full days passed before Liam finally regained his consciousness. Unfortunately, I happened to be at his bedside when he did. His eyes snapped open suddenly and almost instantly, I wished I hadn't prayed for his recovery.

“How long was I out?” he asked, grimacing.

“Two days.”

He looked around the room. White pristine walls. A table and a chair at the far end. A king sized bed with white covers and gold trimmings. Brown curtains and wooden floors.

He looked back at me.

“The Martinez'?”

‘“Hmm hmm.”

“I guess I didn't make it to hell then. I was looking forward to that one,’’ he groaned as he pushed himself off the bed. His jet black hair fell on his face, over his eyes. I could still see the piercing blue. Even now, they were always calculating—scheming. “I'd be embarrassed if I died from a gunshot.”

“I liked you better when you were unconscious and quiet.”

“Really? You were at my bedside for two days?” He smirked.

“You wish,” I said, rolling my eyes. I hadn't lied. I wasn't a

AidenI sat in my car, looking at the building that loomed before me. It was fairly obscured behind trees. The house looked like it hadn't been inhabited in years. That was the point, easy to miss equaled great for hiding. It was the safe house that had housed Anna, and it was my second time here in the last three days—since the attack on Anna and her brother. I drew on my cigarette one last time and quenched its flames, throwing what was left of it out the window. Some fucker had made an attempt on Anna's life. The mere thought of it made my blood boil over. I couldn't phantom the idea of her dead. I could still remember the look in her eyes that night when she had a panic attack. I wanted to hold her and tell her it would be alright and that I was going to get the fucker who did this, but Gabriel…I sucked my teeth.I needed to locate whoever was responsible before they got confident enough to attack again. Aiden. The rest of the drive was painfully quiet. Anna turned her attention from the window to her mobile. She giggled at intervals, and that at least assured me that she was okay. It took a lot to smile after having an attempt on your life. Anna seemed to be handling it pretty well or perhaps she was only doing a great job at masking her fear. If she had simply left when I told her to, this wouldn't have happened. After a while, she dropped her phone in her lap and leaned back in her seat, massaging her forehead with the tip of her fingers. I turned my eyes back to the road. What was I missing? Who could be bold enough to attack one of our safehouses? My best guess was Marcus, he did threaten to attack, but who could have divulged information about Anna's location? Even Lillian didn't know where she was. Only a few people knew her location: me, Gabriel and the guards, all of whom were killed during the attack. I sucked my teeth as my grip tightened on the steering wheel and frustr

Aiden. We sat in the sitting room with Maria sitting across from us, fidgeting. Her eyes kept darting everywhere and anywhere but towards our direction. I could tell that for her, the room felt a lot more crowded than it actually is. My phone beeped and she jumped. I cocked my brow at her before I checked the text.“I guess today is your lucky day. He's here,” I said. Almost immediately, a knock sounded at the door. She looked at me, fear brightly painted on her face like a painter's stroke gone wrong. “Go on, let him in.”She hesitated for a moment then stood up, straightened her skirt and walked to the door. “I told you not to call me. I've got some heat on my back,” he growled, as Maria opened the door for him. “What's wrong, you good?” he said a little more softly as soon as he saw her demeanor.“I'm sorry. They threatened our kids,” she sobbed. His gaze drifted from her to us. He froze as confusion flashed across his eyes, then fear, then contemplation and finally acceptance. He

Anna's POV. Wake up stupid, Wake up stupid! I groaned, raising a heavy hand, as I searched blindly for my phone. My eyes were still tightly shut, as my hands rummaged through the confines of my bedside table. Finally, my fingertips felt cold metal and grabbed it. I held the phone in front of my face, and finally opened my eyes. 6am. I groaned again, like the sleep depraved lady that I was and slammed my head into the pillow. I could have sworn that I had slept only thirty minutes earlier. There was no greater evidence of the love-hate relationship between Sunday nights and Monday mornings, than the urge to get just a few more minutes of sleep. I turned off the annoying alarm, and swung my legs off the bed. I released a deep breath and summoned enough energy to get off the bed. I looked at the sticky note on my wall and read it out loud: You have to keep working hard until you become a billionaire, or at least marry one. My phone chimed, and I was reminded that I was never going

Anna's POV. “Yes!” That was the last word I said, before my door came crashing down. Three masked men burst into my house. They all held guns—glock 17 to be precise; light, too light it almost felt like you were holding air. Polymer frame, but the barrel and slide? Pure steel. Fifteen rounds of 9mm in the magazine—standard, reliable, efficient and favored by most gang members. Father made sure I recognized every gun from a young age. I sprung to my feet clenching my fist. Who the hell were these dudes? I just had that door fixed a few days earlier and they ruined it. I parted my lips to speak, but quickly shut it when I heard Aiden. “Pl—ease, take whatever you want. J—just don't hurt us. You can have my watch, and my ring—it costs a fortune.” No, not the diamond ring. Not the damn ring. Aiden was literally shivering, like the baby that he was—pleading to the intruders to spare our life. Sometimes, I wished he'd stand a little straighter, a little more confident and not cower at

Anna's POV. “Anna, father was murdered…” My breath hitched and my heart felt like lead. I couldn't explain the throbbing pain that took hold of my heart, even though I hadn't seen that man or heard from him in 5 years; it still hurt—inexplicably. But with all the blood he had spilled and the toes he had stepped on, maybe he had it coming. I was hurt, but surprised? I wasn't. I watched Liam's face fall. I had only just realized how terrible he looked. He had bags underneath his eyes and had even grown leaner than I remembered. I knew father's death was taking a toll on him, even though he tried to hide it. He had to look strong, and emotionless like father always taught us, or perhaps I was just seeing what he wanted me to see. Father had also taught us: when we're up against a weaker enemy or an enemy just as powerful as we were, we needed to act strong; but if it was a stronger enemy, we needed to act weak, so we could strike when they least expect. “It was bound to happen, soo

Anna's POV“That's Gabriel Martinez, your fiance.”I burst out laughing uncontrollably, my shoulders vibrating violently. Liam however kept a straight face. My laugh was snuffed out like a candle on a windy night.“That wasn't a joke?” I asked.Liam tucked his hand into his pocket and brought out my engagement ring—Aiden. What did they do to him?“No, sister. I wasn't joking.” Liam lifted up the ring and pinned his gaze on it. “Pretty ring. But what were you thinking, sister? That you'd get away from all this? You can't run from the McClain name.”“That name is a curse.”Liam scoffed, threw the ring in the air and caught it, tucking it back in his pocket. I eyed his every movement. He leaned back in his chair. That was his subtle way of threatening me—of telling Aiden isn't safe if I refuse his proposal. “Hate it if you must, but that's our father's legacy and you will respect it,” he said firmly with every trace of warmth seeping out of his eyes.“I want no part of a legacy born fro

Anna's POV“Shit, shit,” I cursed under my breath as I watched Liam slip out of consciousness. His skin had turned pale from losing too much blood. “Come on, stay with me,” I whispered. He let out a soft groan, as if to stubbornly tell me he was okay. I sucked my teeth, he had taken a bullet for me. I never would have imagined that scene playing out—but it had. I might have died if he hadn't. I stepped on the acceleration. Liam's body jerked forward. Good thing he used the seatbelt.I looked through the side mirror for any car that might be following us. None. Liam was fairly certain that it wasn't the Martinez’, the only other person that could have dared to attack us was Marcus. But to risk a war, he had definitely gone senile. Father would have never been that reckless. I returned my gaze to the road. The images of the dead guard I ran into flashed across my mind. His death was slow and painful. He was stabbed in the neck and choked on his own blood. His hand remained glued to his

Liam. I opened the door quietly. It was a few hours past midnight and it was still one of the earliest I've been home in a while. I had tracked a couple of leads that were supposed to lead me to my father's secret stash. I came up empty. That old geezer sure knew how to be a jerk, even in his absence. I scratched my forehead and navigated my way to Anna's room. I opened the door as quietly as I could and peeked inside. She immediately sprang up and reached for the gun on her bedside. I had barely made any sound, yet it was enough to wake her up. To be honest, I'd have been disappointed if she hadn't woken up. Father's training was too deeply ingrained within us—the paranoia. It's still an amazement how he didn't see his own fall coming, even though it was right underneath his nose. Anna's shoulders slumped when she realized that it was me. An all too familiar look flashed across her face. It was the look that said; what the hell does he want again? I wasn't upset. She didn't r

Aiden: The Present. I sprung up, covered in sweat. My heart thudded violently like the beating of war drums. I swung out of bed and walked into the bathroom to wash my face. Lillian's words kept ringing in my head. It was a constant reminder that my life didn't belong to me. I sucked my teeth. It was stupid of me to ever think that I could have a life of my own. It was stupid of me to think I could ever live a better life. I was a monster, only good for destruction. But then there was Anna. Memories of the other night flashed through my mind. Fucking Gabriel's fiancee had to be top on the list of the most stupid things I had ever done. A knock on my door interrupted my thoughts. “Come in,” I shouted from the bathroom. I dabbed my face with water one more time and picked up the towel to dry my hair and face. I walked back to the room to see Eva, one of our maids standing in the room. She and her mother were one of our oldest maids. She literally grew up with me and to me, she was

Aiden The past: Aiden at 15 The loud thud of approaching footsteps made my eyes flash open. Rest was a luxury I could barely afford, and slumber would mean that I got starved for days. I could handle the starvation, but the intense training that came afterwards made death seem like the lesser evil. I snapped out of bed and hurriedly got into my clothes. I needed to be ready before— The small door slammed open and Dimitri slouched to get a better view of the room. His bulky frame filled the door, preventing the light outside from penetrating the room. Room? This wasn't a room. It was the dog's kennel, renovated into a room big enough to house a fifteen year old boy. The room was scanty, occupied only by a bug infested mattress that had the thickness of my palm and a bag that contained all my possessions—just two pieces of clothes. Dimitri stepped out of the way, and the sunlight flooded into my room, forcing me to shield my eyes. I blink a couple of times to allow my eyes to adj
