Anna's POV
“That's Gabriel Martinez, your fiance.” I burst out laughing uncontrollably, my shoulders vibrating violently. Liam however kept a straight face. My laugh was snuffed out like a candle on a windy night. “That wasn't a joke?” I asked. Liam tucked his hand into his pocket and brought out my engagement ring—Aiden. What did they do to him? “No, sister. I wasn't joking.” Liam lifted up the ring and pinned his gaze on it. “Pretty ring. But what were you thinking, sister? That you'd get away from all this? You can't run from the McClain name.” “That name is a curse.” Liam scoffed, threw the ring in the air and caught it, tucking it back in his pocket. I eyed his every movement. He leaned back in his chair. That was his subtle way of threatening me—of telling Aiden isn't safe if I refuse his proposal. “Hate it if you must, but that's our father's legacy and you will respect it,” he said firmly with every trace of warmth seeping out of his eyes. “I want no part of a legacy born from bloodshed.” “You can't run away from this, Anna. The next few months after a new Don takes power is the most important. There'll be war—everyone will want to test his power—kill him if possible; eliminate all competition—”I looked at his face“—yes, that's all we are now. Competition. You won't last out there, and your fiance will probably be the first to die.” I sighed in relief. His last sentence meant Aiden was safe—for now. “Cain and Jason will probably come back into town.” Those names ensured that he got my attention. “And when they do, all hell will break loose. You know it too; you and I are stronger together. It's either that or we get caught in the crossfire. Marry into the Martinez's family, and we'll have the manpower we need to win this war.” I knew he had a point. Now was the time to make allies and the Martinez family would make really great allies—if they don't stab us in the back. “So, let's assume that I buy into this stupid idea of yours. Indulge me. What do the Martinez’s possibly stand to gain from this union?” Liam began to drum his fingers on his thighs. I sighed, expecting another lie. What was he hiding? “Money. I told them I had access to father's secret stash—millions of dollars. You see, the Martinez's are broke and would need all the financial help they can get or their hold on their territory will break down. They're desperate.” I cocked my brow. “What secret stash?” “Father's secret stash…” Liam said, as he tucked his hand into his pockets, probably to hide his tell “You dumb fuck. You're scamming the Martinez’s.” He leaned back in his seat with a smile sitting perfectly on his face. “I saw an opportunity and I took it.” “And when it's time to meet up with your part of the bargain?” “Let me worry about that. I'll figure something out.” “You expect me to trust you and go along with this scam? How stupid do you think I am?” “Plenty stupid,” he said with a smirk. I looked at him with disgust and he raised both hands in mock surrender. “I'm kidding…I'm kidding. But what other choice do you have?” It was time to use one of the McClains' favored tools—manipulation. I braced for it. “If you decide to run and play ‘normal girl’ with your fiance, it's only a matter of time before you're found. Then it's certain death for you and him. You don't want to be the reason he dies, do you? If you love him, you'll forget about him and fight for your family. Family is all you have, Anna, and you know it.” I let out a heavy exhale. I wasn't disappointed. One of the rules of making an ally or destroying a rival was discovering their weakness; the next was exploiting it. My love for Aiden was my weakness, Liam knew this and was simply exploiting it. He was presenting himself as my only salvation. “Or I could side with Cain. He'll be happy to have me.” Liam's eyes darkened. “We both know Cain is a psychopath and a control freak. You don't want to ally yourself with him. What I'm offering you is a partnership, you won't get an offer as good as this from Cain. Once I secure the seat as Don, you can disappear for all I care. You can go to the moon with your fiance, do anything you want.” “I thought the whole essence of this was to survive the incoming war, not getting the seat as Don.” “Oh don't be naive. We kill Marcus and what? Leave his seat empty? As long as someone else is Don, neither of us will ever be safe.” I hated it, but he had a point—a damn good one. But I felt like a pawn in all of this. He was simply using me to secure his place as Don, but what did I care, as long as I survived and could eventually get away from this family. “You're not the one going into the Martinez's. What's to say they won't kill me once they find out you're scamming them?” “You only need to be engaged with him for a few months—just long enough to win this war.” “If we break off the engagement, what's to say that the Martinez's won't put a target on our back?” Liam's eyes glinted as a smile formed on his lips. He had probably thought up a stupid plan. “Trust me, if we pull this off, then we'd have destroyed the Martinez's too.” Classic Liam, a backstabber. “So are you in or out?” I look at the picture of Gabriel Martinez on the tab in my hands. It was my turn to lean back in my chair and smile. “I'm in.”Anna's POV.A couple of days passed, and we moved into another safe house. We couldn't stay in any place for too long; and we needed a proper place to prepare to meet the Martinez's. We were meeting today and I needed to score a good impression. I picked the necklace Liam got me and wore it. I looked at my reflection in the mirror and sighed. I looked different, dresser in an exquisite black gown, a perfect contrast to my usual manly dressing. But who could blame me? My father raised me to be a man.I heard a quick knock on the door and Liam walked in. He was clad in a suit and looked just as tense as I did, yet he flashed a smile as he walked towards me.“Ready to go?” he asked, placing his hands on my shoulder. I cringed under his touch, shrugged his hands off and stood up.“Yes.”We exited the mansion and embarked on a long drive to the Martinez's.“Are you tense?”I turned to look at Liam. “No. I should be the one worried about you. You can't seem to tell a lie without your hand
Anna's POV“Aiden, what the fuck are you doing here!?”The words rang in my mind, but never left my lips. Control, I told myself, Control. He froze in his steps as he laid eyes on me, but resumed his pace almost immediately—so fast you wouldn't notice the pause. Everything about him was different, his hair was different; not the tousled hair I was used to. The look in his eyes, his aura—every damn thing was totally unrecognizable. Could it be a Doppler? A Doppler wouldn’t freeze because of my presence. He knew me and I thought I knew him.My heart raced, thumping blood through my body with anger. Anger from the betrayal, from the lies. Was his name even Aiden? Or was everything a lie? Liam seemed to catch on, he had seen Aiden once. He immediately tensed up, with an expression that was pleading to me to remain calm. Calm was the last thing I felt. I wanted rage, to scream and burn this whole mansion down with my fury. But was it worth it? Maybe Liam was right—family was all I had.L
Aiden Her eyes, a soft, muted green, flared with anger. It was an unusual look on her face. A look I had never seen before; one that made my chest tighten. In all our five years together, I had never seen her look at me with such angry eyes. Angry, yet broken and hurt. Tears laced the corners of her eyes, waiting to fall out at any moment; and it was my fault, I did this. She had always been the strong one and I had pretended to be just another regular guy, a weakling. But this time, I was scared that seeing the real me had broken her. Or had it? I let out a soft sigh. I hadn't wanted her to find out this way. Damn, I hadn't wanted her to find out at all. But she was also getting engaged to Gabriel. Did she ever plan on telling me that? The whole break-in on her birthday and the kidnap, was it all a ruse to make her disappear? Was all this a well-thought-out plan or just tough luck—fate playing its hands at dark humor? I didn't know what to believe. She was the daughter of Ja
AnnaThe days that followed were painfully slow. It felt as if my mind was put in a constant loop, where all I could think about was Aiden. I looked at the ring on my bedside table. Liam has finally dropped the ring, asking me to return it when I got the chance. I silently hoped that I never did. I didn't want to face him anymore. I felt another tear slip down my face. Father would be so disappointed if he was here. I could imagine the look of disdain on his face. Love was a fickle feeling not made for those in our line of work. I had wanted out, I had gotten out and now I had regretted it. I tucked my lower lip on and bit on it.My heart was heavy and my mind clouded. I swung off my bed and walked to the curtains, drawing it. Golden sunlight filter in, illuminating the room further. We could no longer stay in certain places that were in Marcus territory, it would mean certain death, so we stayed in the Martinez' territory. Marcus would avoid us as long as we remain here, except he's
AnnaI looked at the red dress on the bed and let out a whooshing breath of air. I was doing this after all, meeting up with the heir to the Martinez Mafia. Never miss an opportunity to know your enemies.Another of my father's numerous teachings. He was a brute, yet he was one of the wisest men I knew. But even with all of that wisdom, he still couldn't see the traitor living right underneath his nose. Marcus was his second, he trusted him even more than he trusted his own children. That trust was enough to split our family. Family above all, right? But not Father, to him, we were all just another member of his Mafia, and loyalty—that was all that mattered. He had always been a great Don, but never a great father.I let out a soft hiss as I picked up the dress and got into it. I turned to the mirror and inspected the dress. It was perfect. It hugged me in all the right spots and accentuated my curves. It showed a little too much cleavage, but I guess that was Liam's idea of dressing
Aiden. I swallowed hard, but my throat remained constricted. My heart felt heavy and my chest tighter than it should be. As much as I wanted to go into denial and tell myself that I was okay, deep down, I knew I was far from okay. My mind kept racing back to Anna like an endless loop. It felt like there was a gaping hole in my chest, where my heart was supposed to be. I groaned, playing with the bottle in my hand. I released my grip from the bottle and placed it on my chest instead. I gently massaged my chest to ease the tension that was building inside me. I needed to breathe. I stood up and paced as the space began to seem airtight. “Boss. Are you good?” Viktor asked, his brow furrowing with worry. “You've seemed a little bit disturbed lately.” I shot him a glare and he averted his gaze. “Sorry, boss,” he muttered. At what point did I lose it? When did I become this weak and helpless over something as fickle as a broken heart? I wasn't even supposed to have a heart, growing o
Anna“How well do you actually know Aiden?” His eyes were trained on me, like a predator waiting for the slightest slip up to pounce. He shifted in his chair, as a confident look flashed across his face.“Hold his gaze, don't flinch. Hold his gaze, don't flinch,” I repeated in my head. I needed to act as naturally as possible. He didn't know about Aiden and I, did he?“I'll have to go on a date with him too. Until then I do not get to say I know him,” I quipped. He didn't take his gaze off me as he leaned back in his chair with a puzzled look on his face. “I was looking at you when Aiden came in the other day. At first it was just innocent admiration; but I noticed the shock on your face when you saw him. I notice slight little details like that. I wouldn't be the boss if I didn't.”I had thought I hid my reaction well enough, but it appeared that I didn't. But he couldn't be sure I knew Aiden, he was only fishing for information—information that, even I, would rather not remember. I
AnnaHis expression remained unchanged as he approached me. He seemed unperturbed by my anger. He stopped a few feets away from me, with his eyes boring into my flesh. I wasn't used to this—the confidence he oozed and the sheer masculinity he tainted the air with. He ran his hand through his hair and let out an exasperated breath. “Answer me, who the fuck let you in?”“Your guards did—we’re literally…family.” He stuttered as he said the last word. He stepped closer, encroaching into my space. Air became scarcer, as I sucked in air through my lips. “I need to talk to you. It's urgent,” he muttered.“If you needed to tell me something, you could have told my brother, or yours—I’m his fiancee.”He licked his lips slowly and I felt my stomach warm up. My heart hammered in my chest and I inhaled a desperate breath. What was happening to me? I couldn't even hold on to my anger when he was standing right in front of me.“I needed to see you.” He picked each word carefully. He raised his ha
Aiden. We sat in the sitting room with Maria sitting across from us, fidgeting. Her eyes kept darting everywhere and anywhere but towards our direction. I could tell that for her, the room felt a lot more crowded than it actually is. My phone beeped and she jumped. I cocked my brow at her before I checked the text.“I guess today is your lucky day. He's here,” I said. Almost immediately, a knock sounded at the door. She looked at me, fear brightly painted on her face like a painter's stroke gone wrong. “Go on, let him in.”She hesitated for a moment then stood up, straightened her skirt and walked to the door. “I told you not to call me. I've got some heat on my back,” he growled, as Maria opened the door for him. “What's wrong, you good?” he said a little more softly as soon as he saw her demeanor.“I'm sorry. They threatened our kids,” she sobbed. His gaze drifted from her to us. He froze as confusion flashed across his eyes, then fear, then contemplation and finally acceptance. He
Chapter 21.“Who the fuck is this?” I asked, turning to face Viktor. He shrugged. “That's what I've been trying to figure out. No one has been able to identify him. He's like a ghost. But I did look for our man—the one who's supposed to be dead, not this John Doe.”I took out my phone and took a picture of the dead guy. I had a couple of people in the police department that owed me one or two favors.“What did you find out?”“His name was—is Anthony Barbieri. The boys call him Tony. Has a wife and two kids. A bit and a girl.”“Skip all that,” I said, gesturing with my hands. “Where the fuck is Tony?”“His house was empty. His wife and kids—everyone was gone.”“I guess we have our mole.” I pulled a chair to sit, as the stench of the corpse hit me again. “Get rid of that body. It stinks.”Viktor signaled to the two men with us to dispose of the corpse. They didn't look enthusiastic, but they didn't have a choice. “Does he have any other family? Parents? Siblings?”“His father is in ja
Aiden. The rest of the drive was painfully quiet. Anna turned her attention from the window to her mobile. She giggled at intervals, and that at least assured me that she was okay. It took a lot to smile after having an attempt on your life. Anna seemed to be handling it pretty well or perhaps she was only doing a great job at masking her fear. If she had simply left when I told her to, this wouldn't have happened. After a while, she dropped her phone in her lap and leaned back in her seat, massaging her forehead with the tip of her fingers. I turned my eyes back to the road. What was I missing? Who could be bold enough to attack one of our safehouses? My best guess was Marcus, he did threaten to attack, but who could have divulged information about Anna's location? Even Lillian didn't know where she was. Only a few people knew her location: me, Gabriel and the guards, all of whom were killed during the attack. I sucked my teeth as my grip tightened on the steering wheel and frustr
AidenI sat in my car, looking at the building that loomed before me. It was fairly obscured behind trees. The house looked like it hadn't been inhabited in years. That was the point, easy to miss equaled great for hiding. It was the safe house that had housed Anna, and it was my second time here in the last three days—since the attack on Anna and her brother. I drew on my cigarette one last time and quenched its flames, throwing what was left of it out the window. Some fucker had made an attempt on Anna's life. The mere thought of it made my blood boil over. I couldn't phantom the idea of her dead. I could still remember the look in her eyes that night when she had a panic attack. I wanted to hold her and tell her it would be alright and that I was going to get the fucker who did this, but Gabriel…I sucked my teeth.I needed to locate whoever was responsible before they got confident enough to attack again. I stepped out of the car. The house was near-empty now, except for the few g
AnnaTwo full days passed before Liam finally regained his consciousness. Unfortunately, I happened to be at his bedside when he did. His eyes snapped open suddenly and almost instantly, I wished I hadn't prayed for his recovery. “How long was I out?” he asked, grimacing.“Two days.”He looked around the room. White pristine walls. A table and a chair at the far end. A king sized bed with white covers and gold trimmings. Brown curtains and wooden floors. He looked back at me.“The Martinez'?” ‘“Hmm hmm.”“I guess I didn't make it to hell then. I was looking forward to that one,’’ he groaned as he pushed himself off the bed. His jet black hair fell on his face, over his eyes. I could still see the piercing blue. Even now, they were always calculating—scheming. “I'd be embarrassed if I died from a gunshot.”“I liked you better when you were unconscious and quiet.”“Really? You were at my bedside for two days?” He smirked.“You wish,” I said, rolling my eyes. I hadn't lied. I wasn't a
Anna's POV“Shit, shit,” I cursed under my breath as I watched Liam slip out of consciousness. His skin had turned pale from losing too much blood. “Come on, stay with me,” I whispered. He let out a soft groan, as if to stubbornly tell me he was okay. I sucked my teeth, he had taken a bullet for me. I never would have imagined that scene playing out—but it had. I might have died if he hadn't. I stepped on the acceleration. Liam's body jerked forward. Good thing he used the seatbelt.I looked through the side mirror for any car that might be following us. None. Liam was fairly certain that it wasn't the Martinez’, the only other person that could have dared to attack us was Marcus. But to risk a war, he had definitely gone senile. Father would have never been that reckless. I returned my gaze to the road. The images of the dead guard I ran into flashed across my mind. His death was slow and painful. He was stabbed in the neck and choked on his own blood. His hand remained glued to his
Liam. I opened the door quietly. It was a few hours past midnight and it was still one of the earliest I've been home in a while. I had tracked a couple of leads that were supposed to lead me to my father's secret stash. I came up empty. That old geezer sure knew how to be a jerk, even in his absence. I scratched my forehead and navigated my way to Anna's room. I opened the door as quietly as I could and peeked inside. She immediately sprang up and reached for the gun on her bedside. I had barely made any sound, yet it was enough to wake her up. To be honest, I'd have been disappointed if she hadn't woken up. Father's training was too deeply ingrained within us—the paranoia. It's still an amazement how he didn't see his own fall coming, even though it was right underneath his nose. Anna's shoulders slumped when she realized that it was me. An all too familiar look flashed across her face. It was the look that said; what the hell does he want again? I wasn't upset. She didn't r
Aiden: The Present. I sprung up, covered in sweat. My heart thudded violently like the beating of war drums. I swung out of bed and walked into the bathroom to wash my face. Lillian's words kept ringing in my head. It was a constant reminder that my life didn't belong to me. I sucked my teeth. It was stupid of me to ever think that I could have a life of my own. It was stupid of me to think I could ever live a better life. I was a monster, only good for destruction. But then there was Anna. Memories of the other night flashed through my mind. Fucking Gabriel's fiancee had to be top on the list of the most stupid things I had ever done. A knock on my door interrupted my thoughts. “Come in,” I shouted from the bathroom. I dabbed my face with water one more time and picked up the towel to dry my hair and face. I walked back to the room to see Eva, one of our maids standing in the room. She and her mother were one of our oldest maids. She literally grew up with me and to me, she was
Aiden The past: Aiden at 15 The loud thud of approaching footsteps made my eyes flash open. Rest was a luxury I could barely afford, and slumber would mean that I got starved for days. I could handle the starvation, but the intense training that came afterwards made death seem like the lesser evil. I snapped out of bed and hurriedly got into my clothes. I needed to be ready before— The small door slammed open and Dimitri slouched to get a better view of the room. His bulky frame filled the door, preventing the light outside from penetrating the room. Room? This wasn't a room. It was the dog's kennel, renovated into a room big enough to house a fifteen year old boy. The room was scanty, occupied only by a bug infested mattress that had the thickness of my palm and a bag that contained all my possessions—just two pieces of clothes. Dimitri stepped out of the way, and the sunlight flooded into my room, forcing me to shield my eyes. I blink a couple of times to allow my eyes to adj
