Andre had agreed to go along with Emma to her secret place without telling anything to anyone but she couldn't stop thinking about Cathy. Several thoughts distracted Emma today. She kept wondering why Cathy wanted to meet with them. This wasn't the girl she knew. The Cathy she knew was quite bold. She wasn't someone who would get afraid of anyone and hide. Cathy could have called the police but she preferred to message Emma. This made Emma a bit suspicious too. At one point she wondered if this really was Cathy or just someone messing up with her.
Later she realized their secret place was not known to anyone else. Cathy, Julia and Emma used to often be away from the adults, for a short while, to play in their secret place. Emma highly doubted if someone would kidnap Cathy and ask about it from her. What gave her goosebumps was the thought of going back to that secret place. It has been years since they had done that. Besides, it wasn't in the town. Their secret place was deep in the woods and this was where most of the corpses were found.
'What if Cathy had gone there and the killer found her? What if this is a trap?' thought Emma as she sat, looking at the board in front of her.
These thoughts distracted her from what was being taught in her class. She even thought of calling the police but then later decided to just do what Cathy said. If Cathy was kidnapped, then bringing the police would put her in more danger.
Emma was so engrossed in her thoughts she gave no response to even those who bullied her in class. Her favourite teacher Mrs Ellen, a short woman with a plump face too asked Emma after the zoology class to stay back.
"Emma, I know you weren't listening to what I spoke in class. Is everything alright?" Asked Mrs Ellen, politely.
"Everything is fine, Mrs Ellen," said Emma, softly.
"Without Julia and Cathy, you must be feeling very lonely. I can understand how you feel but remember one thing, Emma. They would have wanted you to be happy but dear you must not deviate from your goals. Staying in past would make you unhappy. This in turn will also distract you. You are a brilliant student and your parents are proud of you but I feel that soon you will go down." said Mrs Ellen, holding Emma's hands.
"I am sorry but I will try my best to do better," said Emma
"Remember Emma, life goes on and you need to move on. After all, after high school, everyone goes on separate paths. Some don't even turn and look back. This would have happened to you and your friends too. Those who have ambition are the only ones who achieve success and I want my favourite student to do well." said Mrs Ellen, smiling at Emma.
"I guess I need some time but I am sure that I will manage everything."
"Okay, take care Emma but next time I want your attention in class," said Mrs Ellen, patting on Emma's right shoulder.
Emma nodded her head before she turned and walked quietly outside the class.
'What is making Cathy hide?' thought Emma as she walked down the corridor.
As she walked past an empty classroom, she heard a voice.
"What about Cathy?"
Emma stopped and stood closer to the door.
"Silly girl stepped in the wrong place at the wrong time, but we need to deal with her now."
'This voice seems familiar. Looks like the person is on the cellphone.'
"Find her as soon as possible and kill her before she tells anyone anything."
Emma gasped. She couldn't believe what she just heard. Someone in the school wanted Cathy dead.
"I think someone is here, hold on," said the person as he walked towards the door of the classroom.
Emma quickly ran inside another empty classroom opposite to her and hid below the teacher's desk. The door opened slowly and someone peeped inside. Emma managed to keep her mouth shut but she couldn't stop her heart, which was pounding in fear. Her mouth suddenly became dry and her palms were full of sweat.
"Was probably just hearing things" said the person before closing the door.
'That sounded like a guy. Is he the killer?'
Emma slowly got up and opened the door. She was relieved to see that no one was there. She walked out after looking around and making sure that no one was outside.
Emma felt scared now. She walked slowly with sweaty palms and her heart still beating fast. She was sure that there was a killer in the school. She knew that the killer was a boy but she did not know who it was. All she heard was his voice. She could not see his face.
'What's going on here? Who the hell is this guy? Why did he want Cathy dead?'
As she continued to walk, she stumbled over the janitor's water bucket and fell. A group of bullies laughed as they walked by.
"Oh look, it's the clumsy freak," said Amanda.
Amanda was a tall, slim girl with black hair. She was a rich spoilt brat who enjoyed bullying people. She had her friend circle of mean girls. Their only job was to gossip and make fun of others.
Amanda walked closer to Emma and poured the remaining water over her head. Several students who surrounded them laughed. Tears began to roll down Emma's cheek but she quickly wiped it away.
"Oh look, the clumsy freak is crying," said Amanda.
Emma felt someone with cold hands, trying to lift her from behind. She turned and saw Stephen.
"We meet again," he said smiling.
"Hey handsome, who are you?" asked Amanda in a flirty voice.
"You should be helping her instead of bullying."
"Are you new here?"
Stephen however ignored her.
"You okay now? "he asked Emma
"I am fine, thanks," said Emma.
Embarrassed by what had just happened to her, she turned and ran away. She went inside the washroom and looked at herself in the mirror.
'Why couldn't people behave normally with me?'
Although she was wet completely from up to down, she couldn't do anything about it. She didn't have any spare clothes with her. She went to the girl's washroom beside the gym to see if any juniors had any extra clothes or at least a hairdryer.
Emma was very nervous about visiting her secret place, which she had shared with her friends. It was so far away from the town that Emma feared if anything bad could happen to her and Andre. She was visiting it probably after many years but she wondered how many people came across it and used it. Nevertheless, she decided to visit it for Cathy's sake. If someone as bold as Cathy was hiding in a cabin for her safety, that means the situation was very serious and she definitely needed help. The other thing that worried her was convincing Nancy. Though she could come up with the perfect excuse, what worried her was Nancy's stubbornness. So before getting out of the school, she called Andre and told him that she would require his help if Nancy was being stubborn. It wasn't something Emma liked to do but she wanted to keep Nancy away from the cabin. Emma wasn't a rebellious
Emma's ears were filled with Cathy's screams. Her friend was completely engulfed in fire and Emma couldn't do anything because this very fire was now all around her as well. The heat from the flames now increased. She tried looking around for Cathy but the growing flames made everything difficult."Cathy!" Emma finally managed to shout out but there was no response. The lack of response made Emma's heart pound in fear. She was now afraid for Cathy. The whole house was now in flames and Emma stood in confusion, trying to understand how to find Cathy. There was no means for escape. She was surrounded by the dancing flames around her. There were tears in her eyes, as she realized that this was her last day. Her head began spinning and she fell to the floor. She felt as though she could no longer breathe properly. She trie
After reaching the hospital, Andre and Emma were taken to a ward where there was hardly anyone. Two police officers stood as guards outside the ward to protect them. A female doctor checked both of them with a stethoscope. Emma was told to just take a little rest and she could leave the hospital tomorrow morning. She was no longer required to wear an oxygen mask either. Andre on the other hand would be required to stay for a couple because he required stitches. Although the doctor informed Emma that he wasn't in any danger.Though she felt relieved, a part of her was unhappy about Cathy. Her burning body and her screams were still fresh in Emma's mind. She couldn't forget about it. She tossed and turned around on the white bed until she received a call on her cellphone from her anxious mother. Someone from the hospital had informed her that she was brought to the
Emma pushed the old wooden door of the church and walked out. It was Sunday and unlike her mother and sister, Emma always went to church for Sunday prayers and sermons. As she continued to walk on the dusty road, she remembered how Cathy died.Although the FBI agent gave her his number, she hasn't responded to him about his offer. She had dedicated her life in high school to study hard for the medical entrance exam and if she succeeded in giving any important evidence, she could go to one of the best universities. At the same time, she felt she would not get her hands on anything important. She felt that Stephen was innocent and may have nothing to do with the murders. Moreover, she felt was probably getting involved in something dangerous. She felt guilty for not telling anyone at home about witnessing Cathy's death but she didn't want anyone to get angry at her. She had requested Sheriff Oscar not to say anything about this to anyo
Emma nervously ate breakfast along with the rest of the family. They all sat around a wooden circular table in the corner of the main hall eating their morning meal. Just before breakfast, Emma had received a call from Stephen reminding her about their date. He told her that he would pick her up in the afternoon for a lunch date.'What shouldIsay to everyone about it? I just met a guy and already decided to date him? It'snot likeIwantedtoevengo out. He blackmailed meforit. I shouldhavemade surethatAndre and I were alone.'thought Emma as she continued to eat slices of bacon.Mr Smith kept talking to them about how a famous actress made unreasonable demands at the resort."The moment she stepped inside the resort, she im
After breakfast, Emma went upstairs to her bedroom to change her clothes but before she could walk inside the room, Nancy dragged Emma to her bedroom and threw a bunch of red dresses on the bed."You refused to wear my favourite one so here are other red dresses.""Are you deaf? I told you that I won't wear any red.""Oh come on!! You are going on a date for the first time. You need to look good. You will look great in a red dress.""Nancy, let's be honest. I don't look good in anything. It is not worth trying it."She pushed Nancy as she walked past her. She stopped in front of the bedroom's door and turned her neck to look at her sister.
This was the second time she sat inside Stephen's car. Though she could sit very comfortably, she still felt very nervous. Ever since she saw Julia's ring, she felt scared and nervous. As soon as Stephan began to drive, Emma quietly sent Agent Jones, the photographs of Julia's ring and the marked American map through her cellphone. She was now waiting for his reply. "Are you feeling nervous?" asked Stephen. "A little," said Emma quietly "Let's play some music so relax you." Stephen increased the volume for radio music and Rihanna's believe it began to play. Almost an hour later, Emma realised that they were almost out of town. "Where are we going?" asked Emma, nervously. "Somewhere inside the woods," replied Stephen. 'Why so far away from town? He is planning to kill me?" thought Emma as Stephen parked his car on the side
It was a warm afternoon and though some areas of the town were still covered with snow, the bright sun made everyone feel warm. Many residents of Roseville came out on Sunday for watching a movie or going to restaurants. Those who had been working hard in the office could take a break and enjoy outside for a day. However, The Roseville Hospital remained busy even on Sunday. It was a huge white rectangular building in the middle of the town. It had a glass door along with a long metal handle for the entrance.Several cars were parked in front of the hospital. Several people could be seen going in and coming out of the hospital. On either side of the hospital were thick overgrown shrubs and trees.A small black crow flew swiftly across the sky. The crow looked at the hospital with its sh
