Every inch of her body shivered as she lay on top of the new guy. She could barely move from being so cold. The new guy however helped her in getting up.
"You are cold like hell!" said Emma, shocked.
"Sorry. My name is Stephen Tepes."
"Funny name." snapped Emma.
"Romanian father and English mother. What would anyone expect?"
Emma walked towards a seat in the back of the bus and finally sat down in a corner. Stephen sat beside her.
"Why are you following me?" Asked Emma, annoyed.
"Just thought we could be friends," replied Stephen.
"You could sit beside any guy." pointed out Emma.
"You look pretty," said Stephen smiling.
Emma looked at Stephen surprised. She was sure that she was far from looking pretty. No one had ever mentioned that she was pretty. Few boys at the school previously had once told Emma that she was interesting and smart but no one mentioned the word pretty. This sudden confession of a new boy makes her suspect if someone forcibly made him say this to her. After all, she was the regular target of the bullies. Some students would definitely want her to look like an idiot falling for a guy who is too good looking for her.
"Wow you are so new and you are already trying to flirt. Did someone give you a dare?" Asked Emma, politely.
"No sweetheart," replied Stephen.
Taken aback by Stephen's reply, Emma looked at him stunned. The new boy just met her and immediately started flirting with her. This was something that happened only in movies.
"Who is sweetheart?" Asked Emma, irritated.
"I was referring to you," replied Stephen.
"Stop with this act and let me sit in peace," said Emma as she increased the volume of her earphones and folded her hands. She closed her eyes as she began listening to Taylor Swift's You Belong with Me.
Throughout the journey to the school, none of them spoke to each other. Emma sat quietly in her seat listening to the songs on her playlist. Music was one thing Emma loved apart from her books. It made her feel relaxed. She would regularly listen to her songs before and after school. A few minutes later, they reached the school. A security guard in a dark blue jacket and trousers opened the white gate and let the bus in.
Emma quickly paused the song and removed the earphones. As the bus slowed down to stop, all the students got up. Emma pushed Stephen to reach the folding door of the bus. The bus stopped in front of the grey building of the Roseville High School. The moment the door opened, Emma jumped out and ran through the grass that surrounded the huge grey building of the Roseville High School. Pushing the glass door at the entrance of the school, Emma walked inside.
'He thinks a loner like me will fall so easily. Probably the mean girls of the school wanted to play a joke on me again and gave him a dare.'
Emma sighed as she walked past the principal's office and the library to reach her locker. She wanted to get away as far as possible from the new boy. He just met her and told her things that she never expected to hear. She couldn't understand his intentions. One thing she already knew was that unlike most movies in real life people do not fall in love just like that. Either he was faking it or he was a complete idiot because she was no beauty.
'When will these bullies stop bothering me? This time they have gone too far. If they keep doing this, how will I manage? I don't even have Julia or Cathy now to eat lunch with me.'
Emma quickly ran to her locker and opened her bag. She removed some of her books and stuffed them inside the locker. Removing her jacket, she revealed a thick red shirt with puffy sleeves. She folded her jacket and pushed it inside the locker.
"Hey Emma, any news of Cathy?"
Emma turned and saw a black, tall muscular teenager wearing a football uniform. It was Andre, Cathy's boyfriend. Though he and Emma rarely spoke to each other, they knew each other well. They had gone to movies and parties along with Cathy. Since he played for the local football team, he was very popular and had lots of friends.
"Andre, I am sorry, there is no news yet," replied Emma.
"Her phone is dead too. This is getting horrible. Even my uncle has gone missing. What is the FBI doing? They should be here investigating by now." said Andre.
"I don't understand what is going on. Is there really a serial killer?" Asked Emma, curiously.
"My cousin Lilly is a forensic expert who handles autopsies for investigation in criminal cases. Guess what she told me. She told me that no one was killed." replied Andre.
"What? How are they dying?" Asked Emma, shocked.
"Even to my cousin, this is a mystery. The police are surely unhappy with these deaths. No one seems to understand it. I just hope that people stop dying like this." said Andre, sad.
"I too hope for the same. I wish they find Cathy soon," said Emma.
"Urgh, it is so cold in here! I should go for a bath now. Couch showed us some new techniques early in the morning and made us practice in the auditorium. See you later."
A notification suddenly appeared on Emma's phone. To her surprise, it was a message from Cathy.
"Wait Andre, look at this," said Emma, quickly.
She showed her cellphone screen to Andre, who looked at the message stunned.
'Hello Emma, my life is in danger. I saw something I shouldn't have. Our town is in danger. I am hiding at our secret place. Meet me after school. I will tell you everything.'
"Secret place? Where the hell is this place?" asked Andre, confused.
"I can show you that place but instead of meeting the Sheriff, why did she hide?" Asked Emma, puzzled.
"Maybe she got herself involved in something very big. Only she can tell us the truth."
"Alright, we will go together to our secret place after school but Andre please don't tell anyone about this." requested Emma.
"Emma, this is wrong! We should tell the police about this. What will we gain by hiding something big like this? Everyone is searching for her and here she just told you her location."
"She sends me this message believing that I won't say anything to anyone. Let's not break her trust."
"You are right. Fine, I won't say to anyone." agreed Andre.
Andre had agreed to go along with Emma to her secret place without telling anything to anyone but she couldn't stop thinking about Cathy. Several thoughts distracted Emma today. She kept wondering why Cathy wanted to meet with them. This wasn't the girl she knew. The Cathy she knew was quite bold. She wasn't someone who would get afraid of anyone and hide. Cathy could have called the police but she preferred to message Emma. This made Emma a bit suspicious too. At one point she wondered if this really was Cathy or just someone messing up with her.Later she realized their secret place was not known to anyone else. Cathy, Julia and Emma used to often be away from the adults, for a short while, to play in their secret place. Emma highly doubted if someone would kidnap Cathy and ask about it from her. What gave her goosebumps was the thought of going back to that secret p
Emma was very nervous about visiting her secret place, which she had shared with her friends. It was so far away from the town that Emma feared if anything bad could happen to her and Andre. She was visiting it probably after many years but she wondered how many people came across it and used it. Nevertheless, she decided to visit it for Cathy's sake. If someone as bold as Cathy was hiding in a cabin for her safety, that means the situation was very serious and she definitely needed help. The other thing that worried her was convincing Nancy. Though she could come up with the perfect excuse, what worried her was Nancy's stubbornness. So before getting out of the school, she called Andre and told him that she would require his help if Nancy was being stubborn. It wasn't something Emma liked to do but she wanted to keep Nancy away from the cabin. Emma wasn't a rebellious
Emma's ears were filled with Cathy's screams. Her friend was completely engulfed in fire and Emma couldn't do anything because this very fire was now all around her as well. The heat from the flames now increased. She tried looking around for Cathy but the growing flames made everything difficult."Cathy!" Emma finally managed to shout out but there was no response. The lack of response made Emma's heart pound in fear. She was now afraid for Cathy. The whole house was now in flames and Emma stood in confusion, trying to understand how to find Cathy. There was no means for escape. She was surrounded by the dancing flames around her. There were tears in her eyes, as she realized that this was her last day. Her head began spinning and she fell to the floor. She felt as though she could no longer breathe properly. She trie
After reaching the hospital, Andre and Emma were taken to a ward where there was hardly anyone. Two police officers stood as guards outside the ward to protect them. A female doctor checked both of them with a stethoscope. Emma was told to just take a little rest and she could leave the hospital tomorrow morning. She was no longer required to wear an oxygen mask either. Andre on the other hand would be required to stay for a couple because he required stitches. Although the doctor informed Emma that he wasn't in any danger.Though she felt relieved, a part of her was unhappy about Cathy. Her burning body and her screams were still fresh in Emma's mind. She couldn't forget about it. She tossed and turned around on the white bed until she received a call on her cellphone from her anxious mother. Someone from the hospital had informed her that she was brought to the
Emma pushed the old wooden door of the church and walked out. It was Sunday and unlike her mother and sister, Emma always went to church for Sunday prayers and sermons. As she continued to walk on the dusty road, she remembered how Cathy died.Although the FBI agent gave her his number, she hasn't responded to him about his offer. She had dedicated her life in high school to study hard for the medical entrance exam and if she succeeded in giving any important evidence, she could go to one of the best universities. At the same time, she felt she would not get her hands on anything important. She felt that Stephen was innocent and may have nothing to do with the murders. Moreover, she felt was probably getting involved in something dangerous. She felt guilty for not telling anyone at home about witnessing Cathy's death but she didn't want anyone to get angry at her. She had requested Sheriff Oscar not to say anything about this to anyo
Emma nervously ate breakfast along with the rest of the family. They all sat around a wooden circular table in the corner of the main hall eating their morning meal. Just before breakfast, Emma had received a call from Stephen reminding her about their date. He told her that he would pick her up in the afternoon for a lunch date.'What shouldIsay to everyone about it? I just met a guy and already decided to date him? It'snot likeIwantedtoevengo out. He blackmailed meforit. I shouldhavemade surethatAndre and I were alone.'thought Emma as she continued to eat slices of bacon.Mr Smith kept talking to them about how a famous actress made unreasonable demands at the resort."The moment she stepped inside the resort, she im
After breakfast, Emma went upstairs to her bedroom to change her clothes but before she could walk inside the room, Nancy dragged Emma to her bedroom and threw a bunch of red dresses on the bed."You refused to wear my favourite one so here are other red dresses.""Are you deaf? I told you that I won't wear any red.""Oh come on!! You are going on a date for the first time. You need to look good. You will look great in a red dress.""Nancy, let's be honest. I don't look good in anything. It is not worth trying it."She pushed Nancy as she walked past her. She stopped in front of the bedroom's door and turned her neck to look at her sister.
This was the second time she sat inside Stephen's car. Though she could sit very comfortably, she still felt very nervous. Ever since she saw Julia's ring, she felt scared and nervous. As soon as Stephan began to drive, Emma quietly sent Agent Jones, the photographs of Julia's ring and the marked American map through her cellphone. She was now waiting for his reply. "Are you feeling nervous?" asked Stephen. "A little," said Emma quietly "Let's play some music so relax you." Stephen increased the volume for radio music and Rihanna's believe it began to play. Almost an hour later, Emma realised that they were almost out of town. "Where are we going?" asked Emma, nervously. "Somewhere inside the woods," replied Stephen. 'Why so far away from town? He is planning to kill me?" thought Emma as Stephen parked his car on the side
