Mildred apparently was expecting Lucas to come after her. Because she was crying Lucas pleaded with Nicole not to come inside with him to not aggravate the situation even more but he allowed her to stay close enough to the door to hear everything that was going to be said.

"Why are you here with her? To further compound my mystery?!", Mildred asked, not too pleased to see him anymore.
"I now know the true reason why you are so upset with Nicole. I wished I had figured it out earlier but I didn't. It took me this long to figure it out but I am sorry I made you suffer", Lucas sa
