It has been just a year since my father passed away and my mother has already remarried? How could she be so ready to just move on and start over so soon? Before I could even wrap my mind around her bombshell, another surprise walked through the door, Dave- The nerdy boy in my class who had rescued me from being raped and had fucked the hell out of me on our prom night just weeks earlier, was none other than the handsome son of my mother's new husband who will now be my stepbrother, and the spark between us became a forbidden flame. Passions and betrayals threatened to burn down the fragile ties binding my new family and I realized no one could be trusted. Not my callous mother, not my devilish husband, not my hot and sweet stepbrother, perhaps not even myself. But my troubles are only beginning, as my dangerous attraction to my new stepbrother led to a new heart beating in my tummy. With everything on the line, I had no choice but to try protecting the people I love and reclaim the future stolen from me. After all, I was Carmen Cartier. And I don't back down from a fight.

Chapter 1

CHAPTER 1:

CARMEN

His seductive stare made my skin crawl. I could feel his flirting eyes stuck on me from across the bar, molesting and undressing me with his gaze.

My heart flipped as I looked over the bar to see the strange, middle-aged man staring at me. He had a smug smirk sitting on his face, never taking his eyes off me, even when he drew his cup to his lips to take a sip of whiskey.

“I hate night shifts,” I mumbled to myself as I busied myself by cleaning the counter of the bar.

I would shoot glares in the man’s direction, a signal that I was not interested in him, but none of it seemed to faze him as he returned my glares with lewd looks directed at my breasts.

I tapped my fingers against the countertop as I checked the watch on my wrist; my shift would be over soon.

Before I could breathe a sigh of relief, the middle-aged man made his way towards me with his now-empty glass.

“I would like a refill,” he announced for the fourth time that night as he placed the glass on the countertop with a slam.

Without a word, I took the glass of whiskey and started to pour it into the glass.

This time, he didn’t return to the table in the corner of the bar where he had come from. He sat on one of the barstools in front of me, leaning against the counter as he asked, “Tell me, do you provide other services?”

I hunched my nose, half at the whiff of alcohol I got and the other half at the thought of where he was going with the conversation.

“No.” I shook my head.

“How much?” he questioned.

“What?” I narrowed my eyes on him.

“How much for each of them?” He shamelessly pointed his fingers at my breasts, a look of amusement in his eyes.

“I think you’ve had more than enough—”

“I’m here.” The sound of Luke, who would be taking the shift after mine, brought me a sense of relief.

“About time,” I sighed as I gave Luke an acknowledging nod, taking off my work shirt.

“They look even better,” the strange man commented, his predatory eyes scanning me in the shirt I had worn underneath my work shirt.

“Goodnight, Luke.” I smiled as I grabbed my pay from a shelf, taking my purse in my hand and rushing out of the bar.

I sighed at the crisp air of the night as I headed to a pharmacy two streets away to get my inhaler and my father’s medication since it was the only thing I could afford for him at that moment.

Chemo was expensive and we didn’t have that kind of money, especially since the doctors had said he had less than just six months to live if he went under chemo and just two months without chemo.

My mom had withdrawn him from treatment, saying there was no use and no money after Dad’s health insurance had run out.

“Going already, pretty girl?!” a familiar voice shouted from behind me, causing a wave of shock to pass through me.

I hastened my footsteps, frowning at the realization that he had followed me out of the bar and was now chasing me down an empty street.

The last thing I wanted was to appear on the local news as a victim of assault.

In a state of panic and my attempts to run away from the creep who did not seem to be backing down anytime soon, my heart started to hurt and my lungs began to close up as I struggled to breathe.

My legs slowed as I clawed at my neck. Before I could pick up my pace again, I was gripped roughly and shoved into an alley.

I let out muffled screams, thrashing forcefully as I pounded my fists against the man’s chest with one hand and attempted to scratch his face with the other.

“If you act right, you might get a good amount of money from me,” he tried to negotiate, his frustration evident on his face as the hand which wasn’t covering my mouth caressed my body carelessly.

My body jerked in response to the lack of air. In one last attempt to get someone to help me, even when I knew the chances of that were low, I released a muffled scream.

“Shut the fuck up, you little bitch!” the man yelled, taking his hand off my mouth so that he could slap me on the cheek.

I took the opportunity of the man taking his hands off my mouth to pant, taking in as much air as my lungs would allow.

Slowly, I started to lose hope and accept my fate. This man would do whatever he wanted with me and he would leave me here to die without an eye witness to the crime.

I shivered under his rough touch, I could feel his hand roughly fondling me and insistently groping one of my breasts like he was searching for something like a blind man searching for a bullet but this time I think it’s my nipple.

Relief washed over me, not from his actions, but from the reassurance of my firm padded bra beneath my shirt. It served as a shield against his unwelcome touch.

Thank heavens, today wasn't one of those days I went bra-free to work.

He grunted as his mission was unachievable as he resorted to pressing his hard-on against my abdomen, grunting as he rocked against me for his own pleasure.

I could hear how weak I sounded as I tried and failed to fight him off; like I had been dehydrated for weeks.

Before I knew it, a bright light appeared from the entrance of the alley.

“What are you doing?!” I heard someone yell.

The man was violently ripped away from my body, causing me to slide down the wall and crash against the floor.

“She asked for it! She begged me for it!” the man yelled as the person who had caught him kicked him repeatedly as he scampered out of the alley.

“Christ,” I heard the person mumble as I still struggled for air. My eye caught sight of my purse which had fallen a few feet away after I had been dragged into the alley.

I crawled towards it to get my phone, attempting to call my father for the last time, but I couldn’t reach it.

The person in front of me noticed the purse and my futile attempts as he took the purse and carried me off the floor.

“Let’s get you to a hospital.” For a moment, I struggled against my rescuer’s hold, trying to jump off his arms and just run, but I eventually gave up.

I was having an attack and he was trying to help. By the time he placed me in the backseat of a car, I fell unconscious.

**********

The next time I came around, I found myself surrounded by the white walls of a hospital room. I sat up and realized that I had an oxygen mask on.

The door to the room opened, and in walked the last person I expected to be there.

David Wilmer stood in the doorway, staring at me with a slightly surprised look on his face.

“How are you feeling?” he asked, finally closing the door and stepping in.

I took the mask off with a confused frown. “What’s going on?”

“I brought you here. You were being assaulted in an alley, and then you had an attack,” he reminded.

I sighed, looking up at the ceiling. Of course, the person who had saved my life had to be the one guy who did everything within his abilities to be ahead of me in my academics, including switching my assignment for the wrong one.

“David Wilmer,” I sighed.

“Just call me Dave,” he corrected.

“Dave.” I nodded, looking everywhere but at his face.

I would never hear the end of it now.

Knowing Dave, I could predict the different ways he could use this information against me.

“The nurse told me you’re stabilized now, and you can leave as soon as you wake up.

You don’t have to worry about the bills, by the way.

I’ll clear them since I brought you here.” I tried to search for the tone of superiority in his voice, something that sounded like he was doing me a favour, but I found nothing. He sounded genuine.

He handed me my purse, his signature cocky smile seeping into his face. “Your passcode was pretty easy to guess. I saved my number on your phone.”

“Did you snoop through my phone?” I questioned with a frown.

“There’s nothing interesting enough about you that I would snoop through, Carmen Cartier,” he shot back as he walked out of the room.

I walked out of the room and towards the exit. I still had to get a refill on my father’s drugs.

As I reached into my purse to get my phone, I stopped in my tracks. A familiar woman was being led towards the hospital from a car.

She had bruises all over her body, and a man in a suit– whose face I couldn’t see clearly – closed the door of the car.

“Mom?” I voiced as I raced towards her, wondering where my father was and what had happened to her.

“Mom, what happened to you?! Is Dad okay? Where is he?” I rambled, frowning at the red marks and bruises on her body.

“It was an accident. I’m fine,” Mom waved me off with her hand in an attempt to dismiss me.

“You’re not fine. What kind of accident? Where’s Dad?” I questioned, following her and the nurses into the reception office and towards a corridor as I held on to my mother.

“Enough, Carmen!” She violently pulled her arm out of my grip as she glared at me.

“If you’re so worried about your father, go home and make sure he’s doing fine. He had called me quite a lot and I couldn’t pick up the phone due to the accident.”

At her words, I took my phone out of my purse and gasped. I had twelve missed calls from my father.

I turned around and bolted out of the hospital, flagging down a taxi as I bit my nails in nervousness.

When I got home, I hurried up the stairs as I called out for him. There was no response.

I opened the door to his room and froze in shock at the scene before me –

There was my father helplessly and was desperately gasping for air on his bed, and standing over him was a strange man I had never seen before with a syringe in his hand, injecting him with God knows what.

CARMEN“Who are you?! What are you doing?!” I screamed, making my way towards the man as I pushed him away from my father.“Geez,” the man cursed, stumbling out of the way.“Dad! Dad!” I called out to my father, tears rolling down my cheeks as I looked at the man who had his arms up in surrender. “I’m calling the police!”By the time I fished for my phone, my father had stopped struggling for air. I felt his frail arms brush against my hand as he called, “Carmen.”“Dad!” I grabbed his hand in mine, keeping an eye out for the man in the corner. “What did he do to you? What happened?”“He saved me, Carmen. That’s Dr. Adrian. He’s a very good friend of mine,” Dad assured, giving my hand a reassuring squeeze.I looked at Dr. Adrian, an apologetic look on my face as he started to make his way forward now that he was sure I wouldn’t attack him.“I’m really sorry,” I stated.“It’s no problem, honestly. I understand. You did well, trying to defend your father.” Dr Adrian gave me an encourag

CARMEN“Miss Carmen Cartier?” One of the cops, a tall and burly man, raised his brow to get confirmation of my identity.I looked at my mom, panic crossing my eyes. She blinked at me. Even without saying a word, I could tell what she was telling me just by looking at me.Act natural.I cleared my throat, looking back at the officer as I answered, “That would be me.”“I’m Officer Dunlop. LAPD.” He showed his ID card to me and my mom, gestured at the other officer beside him. “This is Inspector Bridgers.”“What brings you to our house? I hope there’s nothing wrong,” Mom said with a frown. She was so good at playing it cool.“We just came to ask a few questions. Mr. Dave Wilmer here claims that he witnessed you being assaulted. Care to tell us what happened?” Bridgers questioned. My eyes lingered on Dave for a while, my mind going blank. At first, the only thought on my mind was Max and how he had tried to get me to have sex with him. How could Dave have been a witness to it?“Tell them

CHAPTER 4:
CARMEN 3 MONTHS LATER“It was my fault, you know,” I laughed mirthlessly, lying on the grass in front of my father’s headstone. “If I had been there, maybe you would still be with us now.”“Mom has gotten worse. She barely sleeps at home now. Whenever she returns, she just spends most of her time on her phone. I think she just refuses to face reality. I mean, it’s your three-month death anniversary and she’s not here. Maybe she doesn’t want to come to terms with the fact that you’re dead.”It had been three months since I raced out of Wilmer Hotels like a madwoman after the dreadful text from my mother. On the way home, I had hoped that the text was a sick way of her trying to get me to return home as soon as possible. When I got home, though, I felt it. As soon as I stepped through the door of my house, my heart dropped to the ground at the drastic change in the air, and I knew that my father was dead.Mom wasted no time in getting him buried. CHAPTER 5
CARMEN“What are you talking about?” Dave asked, staring at his father with as much confusion as I felt.Dave Wilmer couldn’t possibly be my stepbrother; not after what had happened between us. How could I live under the same roof as him? I could barely even look into his eyes without the guilt and shame, the reminder of how I had neglected my father, eating away at me.“I’m sorry we couldn’t talk about this sooner, son.” Steve grinned as he explained to his son. “Aren’t you happy? You’re the one who has always worried about me, always advising me against spending the rest of my days alone.”I looked at my mother, shaking my head. When my father got married to her, his business was booming and successful, and she changed when things got difficult. Now, she had played the ultimate trump card – she had woven another rich man into her web.My mother was a gold digger.“Yes, but…” Dave stopped himself from saying anything else. He returned his gaze to my face, frowning apologetically. Fo

CARMENHe could tell how shaken I was by his presence, and I could tell the amazement in his eyes that he was going to take advantage of my horror and keep me from saying a word.In a bid to stop me from speaking up, he took my hand and pulled it up to his lips to kiss it.“No,” I snapped, withdrawing my hand from his grip, causing my mother to gasp.“Carmen!” She gasped before turning to Jasper’s father. “Excuse her behaviour, Mr Hayes. She’s been in a sour mood for a while.”“I don’t blame her,” he laughed. “It’s common among people their age. Jasper gets like that sometimes.”“Father,” Jasper called out to him in a warning tone, glaring at him.“Why don’t we leave the young ones and give them a chance to get to know each other?” Mom suggested, grabbing Mr Hayes by the hand and leaving.I didn’t know if she could tell, or if I had gotten too used to reading her expressions a lot lately, but I found it obvious that she was trying to set me up with Jasper.“So, you’re not one to make

CARMEN“You’re joking,” I chuckled in disbelief, waiting for him to laugh with me and confirm that he was truly joking.“Do you really think I would tell jokes about something like that?” He raised a questioning brow at me, and I shook my head to answer.I frowned, wondering if Jasper knew about it. I wondered if that was why he was trying to know me; so he could get to me, and there wouldn’t be so much strangeness surrounding our marriage.“I can’t marry him. His father is a horrible man,” I stated, my stomach churning at the thought of getting married to his son.“Frank Hayes?” Dave scoffed. “Every single one of them in that family is so stuck-up. I wonder how my father puts up with them enough to invite them to all of his parties and gatherings, honestly.”I figured that Dave had not seen Frank’s face in the alley when he rescued me that night, or he would be saying more than he already was, so I kept it in the back of my mind, desperate to forget that it ever happened.“If my moth

CARMEN“I’m getting married to Jasper right after I graduate high school.”Dave looked up from the book he had been pretending to read ever since I walked into the dining room and found him sitting there on his own.“I don’t understand.” He shook his head, a frown of genuine confusion stuck on his face.“It’s been settled between me and my mother.” I sat beside him so that I could lower my voice and the staff walking around would not have to hear the conversation.“You told me you were going to convince her. You said you wouldn’t marry him,” he said, staring at me as though I had committed the ultimate act of betrayal.“I know what I said, Dave, but I also know that I have certain responsibilities. There are things I’m supposed to do for my sake as well as that of my mom,” I spat out, just as I had rehearsed for a better part of the morning.“And getting married to Jasper is one of them?” He raised his brows.“I believe so, yes.” I nodded, looking down as I served myself food and did

CHAPTER 9
CARMENI stared at Dave, deciphering his facial expression and looking for one sign that told me he was joking with me.“Get married to Jasper, Carmen,” he said again as if reading my mind and trying to prove to me that his words were anything but punchlines.“What are you talking about, Dave? Why should I get married to Jasper all of a sudden? It doesn’t make sense.” I shook my head, placing my hand against the doorknob just in case he suggested something even more outrageous so that I could leave without having to hear it.“Just hear me out, Carmen.” He raised his hands as if signalling me to calm down. “If you get married to Jasper, what hold would she have on you? Agreeing to the wedding and going through with it will only put her guard down, and she wouldn’t even think I know about the video, let alone have plans to delete it.”“And what about the marriage? You delete the video and I’m stuck married to Jasper?” I questioned.“Six months. You can wait it out for six months, and you

CARMEN“Oh, my goodness! Why didn’t you tell us this sooner?!” Mom gasped, standing up and pulling Kate into a hug. “I can’t believe this! It’s such a small world. We’re all connected in one way or another, don’t you think?”“That’s right,” Kate replied with a bright smile on her face.“This isn’t something I expected this soon, really,” Steve Wilmer laughed, standing up and taking Kate’s hand in his. “My son never got along well with girls. At a point in his life, I thought he was terrified of girls, even.”Everyone laughed at his joke.“You’re welcome, Kate. You know, Kate Wilmer does seem like the perfect fit,” Steve said.Kate looked down at the floor, her cheeks turning an aggressive shade of red.“Are you too shocked to say something, Carmen?” Mom questioned me.I was the only one who was not standing and joining in on the small gathering of celebrators.“I’m sure even your children will be best of friends, just like you two were when you were little. In fact, I suggest you both
