CARMEN
3 MONTHS LATER
“It was my fault, you know,” I laughed mirthlessly, lying on the grass in front of my father’s headstone.
“If I had been there, maybe you would still be with us now.”
“Mom has gotten worse. She barely sleeps at home now. Whenever she returns, she just spends most of her time on her phone.
I think she just refuses to face reality. I mean, it’s your three-month death anniversary and she’s not here. Maybe she doesn’t want to come to terms with the fact that you’re dead.”
It had been three months since I raced out of Wilmer Hotels like a madwoman after the dreadful text from my mother.
On the way home, I had hoped that the text was a sick way of her trying to get me to return home as soon as possible.
When I got home, though, I felt it. As soon as I stepped through the door of my house, my heart dropped to the ground at the drastic change in the air, and I knew that my father was dead.
Mom wasted no time in getting him buried. Only a select few people were in attendance, Dr. Adrian included. I lost count of how many times he apologized for not being able to help as much as he wanted.
I didn’t attend my graduation ceremony. Some of the people in my class had come home to find out if I was doing well. I obviously wasn’t, but I had to pretend like I was.
Dave had sent me texts every day since I left him in the hotel room. Sometimes he would call, and other times he would appear at the front door of the house, requesting for my mom to let him see me.
I never let him.
I was afraid that the moment I looked at him, I would be forced to let the guilt eat away at me. I would recall just how carefree and foolish I was while my father was fighting for his life.
Did he try to reach out to me? Did he try to reach for his phone and call me before he died? Was it quick and painless, or slow and painful?
Why wasn’t I there for him?
I started to sob, mouthing “I’m sorry” repeatedly, hoping that he was hearing me from wherever he was.
“I didn’t mean to leave you all alone. I’m really sorry,” I cried.
My phone started to vibrate, and I saw my mother’s ID pop up on the screen.
Shocked at the fact that she was calling my phone for the first time in months, I picked it up.
“Carmen, I want you to come home immediately.”
Without waiting for me to respond, she hung up the phone.
“I’ll see you later, Dad,” I stroked the headstone as I packed up and headed for the house.
As I got closer to the house, I frowned as I caught sight of a moving truck in front of our house. Mom stood in front of the house, directing the men to lift our properties into the back of the truck.
“What’s going on?” I inquired as I got closer to the house.
“We’re moving,” Mom simply said in response, barely sparing me a glance.
“You didn’t tell me anything about it until now,” I pointed out.
“There was no time”, she snapped.
“Where are we moving to? We don’t even have enough money for this. What’s going on, Mom?
What about all of Dad’s things?” Her head snapped in my direction, her annoyance clear on her face.
“Your father would have wanted this,” she snapped. With that, she said nothing more to me right until the moment the movers got everything into their truck.
They didn’t even take our furniture. We got into Mom’s car, following behind the truck.
After about an hour….
“Is this the right address?” I questioned as we reached the house.
The mansion stood at the end of the path we were taking as we got through the gates. There was a large water fountain in the middle of the path that we had to go around to reach the mansion.
“Mom, you need to talk to me.” I turned to my mom, who only looked annoyed at my curiosity. “This can’t be the right address.”
“Oh, God! Carmen, please!” Mom screamed, causing me to go quiet until we parked in front of the house.
The movers started to take our things through the front doors of the house.
“There’s no way we can afford this,” I said, more to myself than to my mother as we walked into the living room of the house.
“You’re finally here,” a man who looked oddly familiar said as he entered the living room, a smile on his face.
“Carmen,” Mom finally said, standing up from her seat as she walked over to the man. My jaw dropped as she pressed her lips against the man’s in a kiss. “Meet Steve, your stepdad.”
“Stepdad,” I echoed the word sounding sour on my tongue. Impossible.
“I know, I know. I didn’t tell you anything about it, but we wanted to keep it quiet,” she said with a smile.
“You can help yourself, Carmen. This is your home as much as it’s mine. I’ll go make sure everything is set for you.” Steve kissed Mom on the cheek and walked away.
“Stepdad?” I frowned at my mom. “It has to be a joke, a really expensive one. Literally. I can’t believe—”
“Carmen—”
“No! Do not try to patronize me, Mom. This is ridiculous! Are you kidding me? It’s been three months since Dad died and you…God, this is terrible. You’re disgusting. I can’t stay here.” I shook my head.
“Where are you going to live?” she asked, coldly, not one bit of remorse in her tone.
“Anywhere but not here. I’ll go get my bags. I can’t do this right now.” I started to make my way out of the living room when she called out to me.
“I need to show you something,” she said, holding up her phone and gesturing for me to go to her.
I took impatient steps towards her as she held her phone up to my eye level and played a video which felt like a punch in my gut.
My mother had taken a video of me in the kitchen of our house, taking a knife and plunging it into Max’s neck, and she was now playing it for me to watch.
“From this angle, it doesn’t look like self-defence. It looks like murder. What do you think the LAPD will do with this information?” she said in a mock ignorant tone.
I always knew my mother didn’t care as much for me, but it suddenly felt like a new spotlight shone on her and I was now seeing her for what she truly was; an absolute demon.
“Please understand that I’m doing all this for you.” She stroked my hair. “You’ll stay here, won’t you?”
I didn’t respond. I could only look at her, a chill enveloping my body.
Steve returned to the living room. This time, he wasn’t alone. Right behind him was the person who had rescued me from being assaulted and had taken my virginity in his father’s hotel.
As our eyes found each other, we both frowned in confusion.
“This is my son, David Wilmer,” Steve introduced.
“Dave, meet Bianca and Carmen; your stepmother and your stepsister.”
Dave and I stared at each other, shock obviously rocking us both to our core at the announcement.
CARMEN“What are you talking about?” Dave asked, staring at his father with as much confusion as I felt.Dave Wilmer couldn’t possibly be my stepbrother; not after what had happened between us. How could I live under the same roof as him? I could barely even look into his eyes without the guilt and shame, the reminder of how I had neglected my father, eating away at me.“I’m sorry we couldn’t talk about this sooner, son.” Steve grinned as he explained to his son. “Aren’t you happy? You’re the one who has always worried about me, always advising me against spending the rest of my days alone.”I looked at my mother, shaking my head. When my father got married to her, his business was booming and successful, and she changed when things got difficult. Now, she had played the ultimate trump card – she had woven another rich man into her web.My mother was a gold digger.“Yes, but…” Dave stopped himself from saying anything else. He returned his gaze to my face, frowning apologetically. Fo
CARMENHe could tell how shaken I was by his presence, and I could tell the amazement in his eyes that he was going to take advantage of my horror and keep me from saying a word.In a bid to stop me from speaking up, he took my hand and pulled it up to his lips to kiss it.“No,” I snapped, withdrawing my hand from his grip, causing my mother to gasp.“Carmen!” She gasped before turning to Jasper’s father. “Excuse her behaviour, Mr Hayes. She’s been in a sour mood for a while.”“I don’t blame her,” he laughed. “It’s common among people their age. Jasper gets like that sometimes.”“Father,” Jasper called out to him in a warning tone, glaring at him.“Why don’t we leave the young ones and give them a chance to get to know each other?” Mom suggested, grabbing Mr Hayes by the hand and leaving.I didn’t know if she could tell, or if I had gotten too used to reading her expressions a lot lately, but I found it obvious that she was trying to set me up with Jasper.“So, you’re not one to make
CARMEN“You’re joking,” I chuckled in disbelief, waiting for him to laugh with me and confirm that he was truly joking.“Do you really think I would tell jokes about something like that?” He raised a questioning brow at me, and I shook my head to answer.I frowned, wondering if Jasper knew about it. I wondered if that was why he was trying to know me; so he could get to me, and there wouldn’t be so much strangeness surrounding our marriage.“I can’t marry him. His father is a horrible man,” I stated, my stomach churning at the thought of getting married to his son.“Frank Hayes?” Dave scoffed. “Every single one of them in that family is so stuck-up. I wonder how my father puts up with them enough to invite them to all of his parties and gatherings, honestly.”I figured that Dave had not seen Frank’s face in the alley when he rescued me that night, or he would be saying more than he already was, so I kept it in the back of my mind, desperate to forget that it ever happened.“If my moth
CARMEN“I’m getting married to Jasper right after I graduate high school.”Dave looked up from the book he had been pretending to read ever since I walked into the dining room and found him sitting there on his own.“I don’t understand.” He shook his head, a frown of genuine confusion stuck on his face.“It’s been settled between me and my mother.” I sat beside him so that I could lower my voice and the staff walking around would not have to hear the conversation.“You told me you were going to convince her. You said you wouldn’t marry him,” he said, staring at me as though I had committed the ultimate act of betrayal.“I know what I said, Dave, but I also know that I have certain responsibilities. There are things I’m supposed to do for my sake as well as that of my mom,” I spat out, just as I had rehearsed for a better part of the morning.“And getting married to Jasper is one of them?” He raised his brows.“I believe so, yes.” I nodded, looking down as I served myself food and did
CARMENI stared at Dave, deciphering his facial expression and looking for one sign that told me he was joking with me.“Get married to Jasper, Carmen,” he said again as if reading my mind and trying to prove to me that his words were anything but punchlines.“What are you talking about, Dave? Why should I get married to Jasper all of a sudden? It doesn’t make sense.” I shook my head, placing my hand against the doorknob just in case he suggested something even more outrageous so that I could leave without having to hear it.“Just hear me out, Carmen.” He raised his hands as if signalling me to calm down. “If you get married to Jasper, what hold would she have on you? Agreeing to the wedding and going through with it will only put her guard down, and she wouldn’t even think I know about the video, let alone have plans to delete it.”“And what about the marriage? You delete the video and I’m stuck married to Jasper?” I questioned.“Six months. You can wait it out for six months, and you
CARMEN“Oh, my goodness! Why didn’t you tell us this sooner?!” Mom gasped, standing up and pulling Kate into a hug. “I can’t believe this! It’s such a small world. We’re all connected in one way or another, don’t you think?”“That’s right,” Kate replied with a bright smile on her face.“This isn’t something I expected this soon, really,” Steve Wilmer laughed, standing up and taking Kate’s hand in his. “My son never got along well with girls. At a point in his life, I thought he was terrified of girls, even.”Everyone laughed at his joke.“You’re welcome, Kate. You know, Kate Wilmer does seem like the perfect fit,” Steve said.Kate looked down at the floor, her cheeks turning an aggressive shade of red.“Are you too shocked to say something, Carmen?” Mom questioned me.I was the only one who was not standing and joining in on the small gathering of celebrators.“I’m sure even your children will be best of friends, just like you two were when you were little. In fact, I suggest you both
CARMEN“What the fuck, Dave?!” I raised my hands in the air as soon as Dave and I finally had a moment of privacy. It was late at night, Kate had returned to her house long ago, and he had pulled me out of the hallway and into one of the many bedrooms which didn’t have a specific use.“Lower your voice, Carmen,” he warned.“Why should I? Do you think people are going to suspect us for being in here together? It’ll be hard for them to have solid suspicions, trust me. I mean, I’m getting married soon, and you’re dating my childhood friend, Kate.” I didn’t mean for my words to come off as spiteful and bitter as they did, but I couldn’t help it.“I know how you must feel right now, Carmen.” He tried to reach for my shoulder, but I stepped away. “Whatever you think this is, it’s far from what it really is.”“Okay, let me take a wild guess.” I crossed my arms. “You asked me out to prom, you had sex with me and got your fun, you found out that I’m your stepsister, then you went along to slee
CARMEN“We haven’t talked in quite a while, Carmen.” Frank took one step towards me, causing me to take large steps backwards.I started to hyperventilate, looking around and calming myself down as I assured myself that there were people around us. My mother was only one scream away; he couldn’t possibly try anything funny in public.“What do you want from me?” I demanded.“Not much. In fact, it’s the smallest favour I think I’ll ever ask of a person.” He stopped walking towards me as he noticed that some people, as they walked past us, stared at us longer than he probably would like.“Just tell me what you want and leave me alone,” I ordered.“You remember me from that night, don’t you?” he asked.“How could I forget? You perverted piece of—”“As you can already tell, I have a family that I need to protect,” he said. “My wife is bedridden. She’s been bedridden for a while now, and I am all my son has as a standing parent.”I almost scoffed at the pity party he was trying to throw, wa
CARMEN“Are you sure about this? Maybe you heard him wrong the first time. Besides, I just got out of prison. I highly doubt that he’ll want to get to see me just yet,” I said to Dave as we slowly walked towards the front door of his father’s house.“You just have to relax for me, Carmen,” Dave said, placing a hand on my lower back. “I didn’t hear him wrong. He clearly said it after his divorce with your mom that he would feel better about giving us his blessing now that he’s not married to her.”We got into the living room, where Steve sat with his legs crossed as he took note of something from a piece of paper.“Dad, look who’s here,” Dave called for his attention, making him look up at us and stand up to give me a good look. I almost laughed at his reaction, but I was too consumed by nervousness to make a sound.“Carmen, what… Come here, my sweet child,” he said, walking towards me and meeting me halfway with a hug.“What happened to you?!” he asked as he pulled away from the hug a
CARMEN“How may I help you?” the woman who stood at the doorway asked me, and I had half a mind to apologize and tell her I had the wrong house before walking away, but I decided to stay instead.“Is Dave home?” I asked.“Mr. Wilmer is home, but he didn’t tell me he was expecting anyone,” she answered, looking down at my hands which held the small box where the wristwatch was. “You can tell me your name, so I can go tell him—”“You really don’t have to,” I said, stopping her from walking back in. “Just let me in, please. I have something important to talk to him about.”“I understand that you probably know him, but I don’t want to get into any trouble. It’s my first day at work, and I don’t want to mess this up.”“You won’t,” I assured her. “You just have to trust me.”It took a moment of hesitation before she finally sighed and stepped aside for me to walk in.I glanced at the little girl she had in her hand with a smile on my face as I got to see just how much she looked like Kate.
CARMEN“Did you tell anyone? I told you not to tell anyone. Did you tell anyone?” I blurted to Evan as I found him standing and waiting for me on the day of my release.“Relax, Carmen,” he laughed. “I only told them that I was coming to check up on you. Why don’t you want them to know that you’re being released, anyway? Are you planning to live as far away as possible without them knowing?”“No,” I answered. “I just… I didn’t want them standing out here and waiting for me to come out. I still need to prepare myself for everything. It’s been a long three years, and I don’t know how they’re going to react.”“I’m sure all this is not what they’re thinking about right now. Trust me when I say that those people will wait for ten years if they have to,” he informed me.As much as it was assurance enough to hear those words from Evan, it didn’t make my heart beat any slower than the speed at which it was going.“Thank you for going through the stress of picking me up, by the way,” I told him
CARMEN“Cartier!”I flinched when I heard my last name being called by the prison guard as she stopped in front of the cell I shared with two other women – Reese and Naomi. She chewed her gum aggressively, using her baton to hit the cell bars, as she watched me so intently that I almost started to dig a hole to hide myself in.“You have been here for a while now, Carmen. It’s time you took the bull by the horns. Don’t let people like her intimidate you,” Naomi said, giving me an encouraging pat on the back to approach the prison guard and ask her what her deal was and why she was calling me.“What…what’s the matter?” I questioned, looking down at my feet to avoid making eye contact with the woman.“Are you ready for your board hearing today?” she asked me, leaning against the bars with folded arms.“I think so,” I said with a nod.“Well, then.” She sighed and took out the key to the bars, opening it for me to step out.“Good luck, Carmen! I’ve had two board hearings so far that have n
CARMENEvan was now standing in front of me with a silent reminder for me to keep my chin up and that I would be fine after the trial, but it was getting harder to do so.After the prosecutor finished asking me questions, I started to feel as if every answer that I had given had dug me into a hole that I would not be able to come out of.“When the victim was making those moves towards you, you called out for your mother, didn’t you?” he asked.“I did.”“Well, to demonstrate just how far her voice must have reached when she called out to her mother, we tested it. I called out to different sound experts to the house, and I was asked to stay in the farthest room from the kitchen. At 70 decibels, I could hear someone calling out to me from that room.”“From the footages gotten from the security cameras around the house, Mrs. Wilmer was not even in the farthest room to the kitchen. In fact, at the same time that Ms. Cartier is seen shouting for her mother’s help in the kitchen, we can see
CARMENMy mother stared at Evan with a shocked expression on her face as he submitted a flash drive to the judge as evidence.“The house where you left after you got married to Mr. Wilmer had a lot of security cameras, which Mrs. Wilmer here may have forgotten about when she slipped into the kitchen and put about ten pills of aphrodisiac into the victim’s drink,” Evan explained as the video on the drive was played for the whole courtroom to see.I had not thought that Evan would work that hard and go that far to get evidence, but he did. Was that why he had been working with my father the whole time? Even I didn’t know about that.“If we watch further, we can see that there was no complete and direct contact between my client and the victim that they were involved in any sexual discussions with each other. To further prove that an aphrodisiac was used in this footage, we have receipts from the pharmacy that she bought them from that week.”“Do the prosecutors have anything to add to t
CARMENDave and I shared a look of disappointment, and I could see that he had made up his mind to be with me no matter what his father said, but that didn’t stop me from feeling bad.“This whole thing between Bianca and I is not close to being over, and I believe she’s going to raise hell before everything is finalized. I have all of that in mind, and I don’t want anything to distract me just yet. Perhaps, after the divorce, we can revisit this talk,” Steve explained.I completely understood why he didn’t agree to the whole thing, but that didn’t mean I was not hurt by it.“You can take all the time you need to think about it,” I encouraged. “We wouldn’t want to put you under any kind of pressure.”“Carmen and I have something important to discuss. Thank you for giving us your honesty, father,” Dave told him as he took my hand and led me out of the room as he asked me, “Which of the bedrooms is yours?”“Here.” I took the lead from him and opened the door to my room, slamming it shut
CARMENBefore Dave could take me into the room where his father was staying, I pulled him back. I tried my hardest to hide my annoyance from him, but I could feel it coming off in waves, and I was certain that he could tell as well.“Is something wrong?” he questioned, and I raised my brow at that.“I should be asking you that question, Dave. I know you’re mad at me, and you should be mad at me for what I hid from you, but you haven’t spoken to me in a week. We can’t just leave things hanging and go in there to tell your father about us.”“I know, Carmen. We have a lot of talking to do, and I do have a lot of apologies as well, but I don’t want to prolong this. The more we keep him the dark, the less likely he is to be happy about the news. We can talk about everything else that we haven’t talked about during the week after.”“Are you sure you want to do this?” I asked. “With everything that my mother must have planted in your mind against me—”“She planted nothing in my mind against
CÀRMEN“What…what are you doing here?” I asked, looking around to see if I could find out if someone else came with him – perhaps Kate or his father.“I wanted to talk to you about everything,” he said.“There’s nothing to talk about. We’re divorced,” I replied, wanting to turn around when he grabbed me by the wrist.“What are you doing?” Dad asked, finally bringing Jasper’s attention towards himself.“Who are…” Jasper trailed off as recognition grew in his eyes, and he took steps back as be looked between me and my father.“You’re… You’re her father,” he noted. “They said you were dead.”“If she doesn’t want to talk to you, don’t you think you should take a hint and leave her alone?” Dad asked him, ignoring his shock and refusing to give him any explanation.“I just wanted to have a short and important talk with her about something, that’s all,” Jasper defended.“Excuse us,” I told Dad, a little curious to know what Jasper wanted to say even after we had legally gone our separate way
