-Corrine-
Trevor unloaded my luggage from the trunk of his car and then caught up with me beside the car. I looked up at the four-story high red brick building that will be my home for the next few years. I officially started my life as a student at Golden Valley University.
“You know, your college isn’t that far from Wesgrove,” Trevor said. “I can drop you off and pick you up every day—”I glanced sharply at my brother. “Stop it,” I grumbled. “The distance isn’t the only reason I moved here. You know it better than anyone.”“Jerome will change his mind once he meets his mate. I’m sure about it.”“Yeah, and neither of us knows when he’ll meet his mate, or if he’ll ever meet her someday,” I replied. “And as long as that doesn’t happen, he will continue to chase me.”Trevor looked at me for a moment, then sighed. “I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you.”My heart melted in an instant. The guilt that Trevor always expressed every time he couldn’t do anything to get rid of Jerome from my life touched me. I smiled and raised my hand to pat his cheek. “You’ve done your best.”“Come here.” Trevor dropped the duffel bag from his arm and then stretched out to hug me. I returned his hug and smiled happily as I inhaled his distinctive scent. Just by hugging him, half of my anxiety is gone and I admit I will miss him.“Take good care of yourself,” he said after we finished hugging. He patted the top of my head, then patted my cheek. “Call me if you need anything... or if you need someone to talk to.”“Sure. Thanks.”“And don’t forget, come home on your birthday. The first shift is very dangerous if done without assistance.”I sighed while holding back laughter. “You sound like Mom and Dad.”“I’m worried about you,” Trevor said with a sincerity that moved me. He even ignored my taunts and looked at me affectionately. “Promise to call me if anything happens.”After giving some advice, he made me promise to not get wasted and do drugs, Trevor got into his car and started the engine. I watched him leave while waving as his car turned out of the gate.I picked up the duffel bag that Trevor had dropped and turned around to take another look at my dorm. I took a deep breath and said, “Campus life, here I come.”Each room in the dorm was occupied by two people and I really hoped to have a nice roommate, or at least she was not some weirdo who liked to bring smelly things into the room or had some horrible hobby like making human body replicas out of fried chicken bones. There were no elevators here, so I had to climb the stairs to my room on the third floor. Students walked by and some smiled at me when we met eyes. Even though this dorm was specifically for female students, there was no prohibition for boys to come here. It’s just that they can’t stay overnight.I stopped in front of a door marked with the number 305 and took a deep breath. I hope the Moon Goddess granted my wish. When I raised my hand to open the door, it suddenly opened from inside and someone walked out while looking down at the cell phone. She was surprised when she looked up and found me standing in the doorway.“Oh, hey!” she exclaimed. She grinned ear to ear and quickly shoved her phone into the back pocket of her jeans. After that, she reached out her hand, inviting me to shake hands. “Are you my roommate?” she asked. “I’m Evangeline. You can call me Eva.”Her friendliness bodes well for me. She stepped away from me, giving me a way so I could enter our room. This room was twice the size of the room in my house. Two beds were placed on opposite sides. There were two study tables and two wardrobes, so we didn’t have to scramble to use them.I looked around and smiled contentedly. Not bad at all.“I’m using the bed over there,” Eva pointed to the bed on the left. “Do you want me to move to the other side?”“No, you don’t need to do that. I don’t mind.”I headed to the empty bed and put my luggage on it.“So—um—is there anything I can help you with? Do you want me to help you organize your things, or—”I turned and looked at Eva. “No.” I shook my head. “I can do it myself.”“Oh, yeah, sure.” Eva shoved her hands into her pockets. She looked awkward and so did I. Eva turned her eyes toward the door and then back at me. “I’m sorry. I’m just trying to be friendly, you know. Sorry if you feel disturbed.”“You know what? You’re not in the least bit annoying. You’re just too friendly to the point that I’m confused about what to do with you.”We looked at each other, then both laughed.Eva walked over to me. Her long, wavy black hair swayed as she sat on the edge of the bed. She took her cell phone out of her back pocket and placed it beside her. “I’m not really good at making friends. And to be honest, I’m so nervous today because I have to spend at least four years with roommates I don’t know.”“You’re worried that your roommate is a weirdo who likes to collect gruesome things?” I guessed. Her brown eyes widened, and she patted my arm. “You read my mind!” she exclaimed. “I imagined sharing a room with a Satanist who would put goat's horns on the head of her bed and draw devil summoning circles under my bed when I wasn’t in the room.”Inside, I smiled wryly. Maybe Eva would freak out if she found out I was a werewolf. Even so, personality-wise, I was pretty normal.“Then did I pass?” I asked.“Yeah. You did,” said Eva. She patted my arm and grinned. We chatted for a few minutes and gained quite a bit of information about each other.Eva was originally from this big city and had one older brother and a mother. She liked spicy food and sometimes snores in her sleep. The sound of a cell phone ringing interrupted our conversation. Eva grabbed her phone and read the message, after which she looked at me.“You want to join the party?”I blinked in confusion. “Party? Isn’t it too early to join the party? We haven’t even had one day as college students yet.”Eva chuckled at my words. “Relax! This is a welcoming party for new students at a sorority house. My friend says the party is safe. But if something bad happens, we can leave right away.”Eva looked at me expectantly, waiting for my answer.“Sure,” I said then. “Let’s go to the party.”*The party wasn’t as wild as I imagined. Maybe I had watched too many juvenile delinquency movies, so I was imagining terrible things. The sorority house we went to blew me away because it was so nice, like the mansions in Wesgrove. This place even had a swimming pool in the backyard, where the party took place.Eva and I drank coke from red plastic cups. We stood by the pool, in a less crowded place. Eva introduced me to her high school friends, after which she chatted with them while I watched the people dancing by the pool.“I’m going to the restroom,” I whispered to Eva.“Do you want me to go with you?”I shook my head and handed her my glass of coke. “Just hold this for me.”“Sure.”I headed to the restroom by the pool and cringed at the long queue. I then decided to go into the house to find another restroom. And that’s when I saw something that made me sick.Daniel and Kasey were making out. My ex-boyfriend and my ex-best friend.I stood frozen at the end of the hall, looking at the two of them and feeling my stomach churn. Not many people passed through this hallway so they could make out to their heart’s content. They were kissing as if they were going to devour each other.Daniel had never kissed me like that, so passionately and with so many moans. He was like a mating animal. They seemed to notice the piercing stares I gave them because they stopped kissing and looked my way.Daniel was silent while Kasey smiled sinisterly.“Oh, hi Corrine,” she greeted. She took Daniel’s hand and placed it on one of her breasts. “Watching something interesting?”After that, Kasey kissed Daniel’s jaw, then her lips moved up to the corners of his lips. Daniel let out a low sigh, and that’s when I realized I should have gotten as far away from them as possible.I kept my mouth shut and turned around, with hurried steps out into the backyard to find Eva.She was still where we were standing earlier, laughing with her friends. As I was about to approach her, there was a roar of engines from the front yard and everyone stopped talking.“They’re coming,” said someone standing near me. “The trouble-making mob.”The music was still thumping, but no one was dancing anymore. They looked agitated now, and I became uneasy, too.I walked over to Eva and held her hand. “I think we should go,” I said.Eva nodded, and we walked towards the exit, but we were stopped when a group of young men in leather jackets walked into the backyard. Each of them took a girl in a sexy dress and carried booze. Some of them even looked drunk. One of them raised their drink bottle high and shouted, “Let’s get the party started!”After that, he jumped into the swimming pool with his partner screaming.“Who are they?” I whispered to Eva, but Eva didn’t answer.I glanced at her and saw she was staring at the crowd. I followed her gaze and my eyes locked on someone who looked different from the others. He walked alone, like a leader in a pack. His facial features were so defined and his body was bigger and more muscular than his friends. Then suddenly he turned his head, and our eyes met. It was then that I realized something.Werewolf. He was a werewolf. The young man walked towards us. I widened my eyes and inched closer to Eva. He must have known that I was just like him, a shifter. Was he going to make a scene with me?My heart raced, and I squinted and looked away as he stopped in front of us. Then I realized he was looking at Eva and not at me.I looked at Eva and saw her shoulders tighten. “What are you doing here, Andrew?” she asked curtly.I widened my eyes, surprised by Eva’s courage and the way she spoke to this dangerous-looking young man. And it seems like the people around us were just as surprised as I was.He crossed his arms and tilted his head, then stared at Eva for a few seconds before saying, “Is that how you speak to your older brother?”-Corrine- He was her older brother? What?I looked at Eva and Andrew in turn. They didn’t look alike at all. And one of the most striking things was that Andrew was clearly a werewolf and Eva was just a human.“Should I give special treatment to people who never even come home to meet his family?” Eva replied. She folded her arms across her chest and lifted her chin, showing defiance towards her brother.I wanted to pull Eva away from Andrew because I was afraid Andrew would do something terrible to her. Because he seemed to have a penchant for violence.Andrew raised a hand and extended it towards Eva. And I, who had been standing in an alert position, quickly grabbed Eva’s hand and pulled her towards me. Eva was so surprised that she jerked the air from her lips while Andrew’s hand hung in the air and he glanced at me, then he smiled crookedly.“What do you think I will do to my sister? Hmm?” he asked me.I glared in panic. I didn’t think my actions would attract his attention.“Uh—
-Corrine-Since that day, I can’t get Andrew out of my mind. But I haven’t seen him since the party at the sorority house and judging by the way Eva talked about him, they didn’t get along well. They’re not like me and Trevor. So it is very unlikely that I will meet him again.Even though Andrew asked me to return his jacket, but I couldn’t find a way to return it. I didn’t want to ask Eva for help because, well, she definitely didn’t like it, and to be honest, I wanted to see him again. I know I shouldn’t, but I can’t just ignore him. The jacket is now stored neatly in my closet after I washed it.“You also have an older brother, right? Is he as annoying as Andrew?” asked Eva, after we finished our morning class. We continued our talk from last night when we couldn’t sleep and started talking about each other’s families. We walked towards Houghton Commons, the building where students gather for lunch. It is about a five minutes walk from the lecture building. I enjoyed every little t
-Corrine- The question didn’t surprise me. He must have known my identity as well as I knew his.“I could ask you the same thing,” I said.Andrew smirked. “Smart girl.” Then he leaned in towards me and looked at me closely. “You know? I like smart girls.”I returned his smile, putting on my best arrogant face, and said, “Too bad. I’m not into bad boys.”He pulled back and leaned against the sofa, the smile still on his face. His reaction made me feel embarrassed. I had hoped he would be upset, but it was the opposite.“Are you Eva’s roommate?” he asked later.I thought for a moment, considering whether to give an honest answer or lie to him. Then I decided that providing information like that was not dangerous, and hopefully, Eva wouldn’t be angry with me for it.“Yes,” I replied. I glanced towards the restroom. There was no sign of Eva yet. “Seems like she hates you,” I said bluntly.I was quite surprised when I saw Andrew’s eyes change to sadness, even if it was only for a moment. H
-Corrine- “You’re daydreaming again.”I jumped at the sound of Gary’s, my classmate, voice. I blinked and turned towards him, then returned his smile. “Busted,” I murmured.“The lecture’s over.” Gary nodded towards the front, letting me know that the professor had left the classroom.“Oh...” It took me a few seconds to realize what I should do. Gather my books and stationery. “Oh!” I exclaimed.I bent down to grab my bag from under the desk and placed it on my lap. My movements paused when I saw what was inside.Andrew’s jacket.Yeah, call me a pervert. I have been carrying that jacket for the past week. Ever since I met him at Houghton Commons, I thought I would meet him again. Maybe he would show up at the same place, or he could suddenly appear in front of my dorm room.Who knows?“Nice jacket,” Gary said, peeking into my open bag.Reflexively, I closed the bag and grimaced at him. “Not mine,” I muttered.Gary withdrew and gazed at me. The gleam in his eyes radiated curiosity.“Boy
-Corrine- We stopped after leaving the department building. I turned around, slinging my bag over one shoulder, and pointed at him. “You made me skip class.”Andrew cracked a smile. “Between you and me, who dragged someone and took them out of the classroom?” After that, he perfectly arched one eyebrow.Hearing the word “drag” made me realize that I had still been holding onto his arm. I quickly let go and clasped my hands together.“What do you want?” I asked, turning my face away."Haven't I already told you?" Andrew tilted his head. That annoyingly sexy little smile appeared again. "You.""And what exactly do you want from me?" I pressed."I want to spend time with you.""First things first," I shot back. "If you're trying to seduce me, you’re really suck at it.""There's no harm in trying," he shrugged. His expression showed that he found my behavior amusing, and I felt like a helpless child in front of him.I glared at him, telling him to shut his mouth, and continued speaking. "
-Corrine-The rackety sound of a game center welcomed us as we entered that place.“First time?!” Andrew half shouted to overcome the surrounding noise.I looked up at him and shook my head. “No!”I didn’t want to go into details about my experience at the game center. First, because places like this brought unpleasant memories for me. Daniel used to take me to the game center in Wesgrove when we were still dating. Second, because I was a terrible player at games like these.Daniel would often mock and scold me every time I made a mistake and suffered defeat. Looking back, I should have realized how repulsive his attitude was. But love did make people blind sometimes.I was lost in my thoughts about Daniel, staring blankly at the row of games when Andrew bent down towards me and whispered in my ear.“Wanna get out of here?”His deep and sexy voice made me stumble. I turned and almost kissed his lips. Our faces were only about an inch apart.I lingered, gazing into his dark blue eyes.
-Corrine-I should have guessed where Andrew would take me. He was a bad boy; it was obvious. So, where else would a bad boy go if not to a place where troublemakers gather? There was no such place in Wesgrove, or maybe I didn’t know. Trevor had many friends back in our place, and he always got reports on where I went, so I never went to places on his forbidden list.If Trevor knew I went to a place like this, I’m sure he would pick me up right now and tell me to move out of Golden Leaf. The roar of the car engine made me shudder. My hands were tightly wrapped around Andrew’s waist while my eyes darted around, seeing girls in skimpy outfits, some seemingly underdressed, dancing on top of car roofs with beer bottles in their hands. The place looked like an abandoned luxury housing complex on the hillside. Surrounded by dense forest with no other settlements or life around, this area was indeed suitable as a gathering place for youngsters who wanted to party to their heart's contents.A
-Corrine-The nauseating sting hit my head on the first gulp, after which I didn’t know how to describe the various sensations assaulting my body. But one thing was sure; I screwed. The girl before me, the one who handed me the booze, split in two. Or maybe it was just my imagination.“Is the—,” I paused to burp, “—booze should be this strong?” I swirled the plastic cup in my hand, almost dropping it in the process, then looked at the girl’s face again. Her brown skin glistened as she tilted her head and smiled.“Is great, isn’t it?” she cheered. “You want more?”I shook my head. Wrong move. My vision immediately spun as I did so. I closed my eyes tightly, dropped the plastic cup from my hand, and tried to find something to hold onto to avoid falling.Someone caught my arm, and I fell backward. My head hit something, and as I looked up, I found a pair of eyes staring at me. Not Andrew.“Hey Lily, what did you give to her?” I heard his voice echo in his chest.Lily and the others laugh
-Corrine-Was that—?I narrowed my eyes as I walked closer.“Andrew?”Andrew smiled at me and extended his hand.“Corrine.”His voice sounded different—softer than usual, unlike his usual self. He reached out, silently urging me to come closer. It was difficult to step into the battle arena while wearing a dress and holding a bouquet of roses. When I finally managed to stand before Andrew, I realized he was dressed in a black suit with a matching black shirt.“Did you just come from a funeral?” I asked, frowning.Andrew laughed. “Do I look that miserable? Would you prefer me to wear nothing at all?”My face heated instantly. “What is this? You scared me.”Andrew reached for my free hand, intertwining his pinky finger with mine.“I love you, Corrine,” he said.I blinked, feeling both flustered and confused. “Yeah… I know.” I had no idea what to say. My response made him chuckle.“I love your confidence and your determination, how you never give up, no matter how many obstacles stand in
-Corrine-After talking with my family and Andrew, and after much contemplation, I decided to take a break from college. Everything that had happened left me falling behind, and I couldn’t catch up—not right now. There wasn’t much I did during my time off. I studied to make up for what I had missed and reviewed my lessons. Other than that, I spent my time training with Leana. Day by day, my fighting skills improved—but so did Leana’s. So I wasn’t sure when I would actually surpass her. Maybe someday.Everything was normal—almost boring, even—until one morning when I woke up and found that Andrew was no longer beside me.I reached out across the bed and opened my eyes to an unusual emptiness. Normally, Andrew never left before I woke up. He would always hold me and say good morning. But this time, he wasn’t there.“Andrew?” I turned toward the window, then sat up and scanned the room. The bathroom door was open, and there was no sound from inside—which meant Andrew wasn’t there.Did so
-Andrew-I stood in front of Rebecca’s door, a bouquet in my hand. I didn’t know what kind of flowers she liked, so I bought her pink roses.Come to think of it, I knew nothing about my stepmother. We never really talked after my father passed away.“Andrew?”I was just about to knock when Rebecca opened the door. We were both surprised, but she looked more shocked than I was.“Hey.” I gave a small smile and handed her the flowers.“For me?” Rebecca looked confused as she took them.I nodded, then observed her appearance. “Are you going somewhere?”“Yes—” She glanced down at her outfit. “Yes!” she answered again, a little louder. “I’m meeting a friend.” Then she looked past me, toward the driveway, as if expecting someone to arrive.“So… what brings you here?” Rebecca threw an awkward smile. Even though she tried to hide it, I could tell she was uneasy—like my visit was the last thing she wanted.“I want to talk to you.”“About what?”“Father.”Rebecca fell silent. “Andrew,” she began
-Corrine-Trevor had told me everything about his conversation with Eva at Mythic Manor a couple of nights ago. I understood why he made that decision. Eva would be the one most hurt if they stayed together and then, one day, Trevor met his mate.Even though I hated seeing Eva sad, this was the best thing for her.“So, do you plan on looking for your mate?” I asked as we drove to Moon Dust for a dinner invitation from our parents. It was a shame Andrew couldn’t join us—he had some family business to take care of.“Not for now.” Trevor shrugged. “I’m enjoying my time alone.” Then he glanced at me. “And I want to spend more time with you, you know. After everything that happened, we barely hang out anymore.”“Yeah.” I nodded in agreement. “You also promised to train me so I could beat Leana.”“Hey, I never promised that,” he argued, “beating Leana, I mean.”“You, too?”“What?”“Because Andrew said the same thing when I asked him to train me to defeat Leana.”“She’s an incredible fighter
-Trevor-I thought I would be able to breathe for a moment and ignore this whole love triangle problem. But these two girls gave me no choice but to keep thinking about it.Honestly, I wasn’t really interested when Corrine invited the four of us to spend the night out somewhere. But since I was a good big brother and wanted to see my sister happy, I agreed.I deliberately took the wheel to avoid Eva and Leana, but the Moon Goddess knew I couldn’t avoid them forever. As soon as we got out of the car and walked toward the race area, Eva and Leana immediately trapped me between them. Corrine often said I was dense, so I tried to break the awkwardness with a joke—but not a single one of them laughed. It seemed I had made the wrong move.“Look at them, flirting and all,” Leana grumbled as she watched Corrine and Andrew walking ahead of us. “Life must be so great when you’ve already found your mate.”“I heard you used to like Andrew?” The question slipped out of my mouth before I even had t
-Corrine-This was also an issue I had been thinking about since yesterday. With the attack and kidnapping incident, the battle to determine the next Alpha had been postponed. I had already expected that Dad would bring this up sooner or later.I hadn’t discussed this with Andrew yet, but I had already made up my mind.“I’m not going through with it,” I said. With both hands tucked into my pants pockets, I looked at Dad, Mom, and Trevor. “Let the pack know that I’m stepping down, and they can fight among themselves to determine the next Alpha.”Andrew placed a hand on my shoulder, making me turn to him. “Are you sure?” His voice was gentle, without any concern or disapproval. He truly just wanted to know if I was certain about my decision.I smiled at him and nodded. “Yes.” Then, I turned back to my family. “After everything that’s happened, I just want to live a peaceful life. At least until I graduate from college—” I briefly glanced at the campus building. “—and if you’ll have me,
-Corrine-When I said that almost all of my problems were solved, this was the one that remained unresolved. I didn’t know why my mother suddenly wanted to meet me and Andrew after everything she had said and done to us, but I hoped this was a good sign. For everyone’s safety and comfort, we didn’t meet at Moon Dust or Andrew’s mansion, but instead in Golden Valley.Andrew and I arrived first and headed straight to Houghton Commons. We chose a quiet spot outside, near a large shady tree. The weather was quite windy today, so most people preferred to sit indoors.I pulled my jacket tighter around me and waited, occasionally glancing toward the entrance.“You seem nervous,” Andrew said. I turned to him and frowned, trying to see his eyes behind the sunglasses he was wearing.“Are you not?”“Why should I be? She’s your mother, not mine.”“Right. But she’s going to talk to us, not just me. You still remember how much she hated you—so much that she even worked with Jerome to—”The distant
-Corrine-The next morning, when I opened the window and looked at the clear blue sky, I still couldn’t believe that it was all over. All of my problems were solved—well, most of them—but the danger had passed, and I could finally live in peace.I stretched out my hands and inhaled the fresh scent of the trees, closing my eyes and letting my body soak in the warm sunlight.I smiled, and my smile turned into a wide grin when I felt Andrew behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and kissing the crook of my neck.“Morning,” he whispered in my ear before giving it a soft bite.I rested my head against him. “Morning.” My voice was hoarse. I closed my eyes and took in the scent of his shampoo lingering in his messy hair. “Did you finish your business yesterday?”Last night, after dropping me off at the mansion, Andrew had left to return to the forest. He wanted to make sure everything was truly settled, including mobilizing the lycans to search for Gary’s body. Andrew wanted to see wit
-Corrine-Something held my foot. My body jerked, suddenly stopping mid-fall before swinging in the air.“Corrine! Hang on!”I tried to look up and saw Andrew. As much as I was relieved that he had found me, we were still in danger.Andrew’s hand gripped my ankle tightly. He was using all his strength to pull me up. There was nothing I could do except stay still and let him try to save me.Relief washed over me like cold water, bringing down my adrenaline as Andrew successfully pulled me to safety. He immediately hugged me, repeatedly calling my name.“I’m sorry, Corrine. I’m sorry, baby, I’m late.” His face was buried in my hair, and his lips pressed kisses against my ear and cheek. With trembling hands, I cupped his face and looked into his eyes. “You’re not late.” I smiled weakly. “You saved me.”We stared at each other in silence for a few moments before both of us burst into laughter. Laughter that born from the lingering fear of facing death and the joy of having survived it.“I
