“Happy Birthday, Mom!” I greeted my mom while she was cooking for our breakfast. She’s in the kitchen. I just woke up and prepared myself some coffee. My mom smiled at me and thanked me. I hugged her very tightly, this is my first gift to her, she deserves to be hugged by me.
While waiting for breakfast, I turned on the TV and watched my favorite cartoon, Adventure Time.
“Hey, Bliss. Would you do me some favor?” My mom said, I looked at her from the couch while she’s still in the kitchen. I lowered the television’s volume to hear what she’s going to say next.
“Can you go to the groceries for me? I have no time to go out. I have a lot of things to do.” She continued.
“Anything for you, mom!” I exclaimed. I have nothing to do anyway. She insisted that I should go to the grocery store after eating my breakfast. I’m excited about this event. Aside from running into the groceries for her, I will also help her cook later.
I will bake my mom a cake. It’s her special request. I always bake them, mom and dad, a cake when it’s their birthday. So I’m excited when it comes to an event like this.
Did I mention that I have a passion for baking? I love cooking, baking to be exact. And I’m planning to get a culinary degree for college. Well, not just a plan but that’s what I’m going to do anyway. My dream is to be a Pastry Chef. I also dream about going to France since they have the best bakeries and their pastries are the best.
After I ate my breakfast, I took a shower and went to the grocery store with a list of things to buy that my mom gave me.
While I was enjoying the serenity of walking down the aisle of the grocery store. My mind wanders with curiosity about the CEO. I wonder what he looks like. I heard from dad last night that he’s very close with the CEO-- “You won’t realize that he’s the CEO from the way that he behaves.” That’s according to my dad last night. Plus he’s a bachelor. He doesn’t have a wife yet. Maybe he’s young, someone like Ace.
I smiled when I thought of Ace.
When I was done grocery shopping, I hurriedly went home and did my task for my mom’s birthday.
I baked a small 6x4 inch round cake. Today, I will be making a red velvet cake. It’s my mom’s favorite. Good thing that I remember that. Red velvet is really not my cup of tea but since it’s my mom’s favorite I will make it very special for the very special person in my life.
And I should make it really special because the owner of the company where my dad works will be here. I should not embarrass my father and also my family’s reputation.
After baking and designing the cake, I cleaned myself up and prepared for the little celebration for my mom. My mom prepared me a dress for this. I was hesitant to wear it at first because I’m not comfortable, but it’s just a Yellow Sunday dress, it has cute sleeves that can cover half of my arms and the length is just perfect for me.
My mom is also wearing the dress I gave her. It was the gift that I bought yesterday. It really fits her perfectly and she looks stunning just like how I imagined it would be. I gave myself a pat on the back because I made the right decision. I feel like I’m proud of myself. My mom looked delighted with how she looks.
I heard the car’s horn. It’s my dad.
My heart skipped a beat for a second. I’m nervous. We have never had this kind of visitor ever since. So my mom and I are both highly strung. We’re not quite familiar with accommodating visitors like the CEO.
My dad entered from our garage door but he was alone.
“Where’s Mr. Buenaventura?” My mom asked.
“He’s on his way. He said it would be rude if he didn’t bring anything. Let’s just wait for him.” My dad said while scratching his head.
“Oh, and other workmates are coming too. It was late notice, I’m sorry.” He said while looking nervously. But my mom just nodded and said okay. It looks like she knew this was coming. I think it’s not a big problem too since our food can accommodate a lot of people. She was ready for it.
My dad changed his attire to a semi-formal one, just like what we wear. My mom looks nervous. I hold her hand tightly. It’s just a simple dinner. Why do we act like our family will be investigated by the police?
I smiled at mom while we were sitting on our couch.
After a few minutes, we heard a car honk. My heart missed another beat again. This is it. The CEO will be here in a few seconds.
My dad went to our front door to welcome our guest. My mom followed and I stood up just near them. I put a smile on my face to look nice.
“Mr. Sanchez, these are my wife and daughter.” Dad introduced. Mr. Sanchez must be in his 40’s or 50’s. He’s tall and has an average body for his age. He shook my mom’s hand and patted me on the head. I was weirded out with that. He’s not the CEO for sure since he is not Mr. Buenaventura.
Another three men entered our house, all of them seemed like they were the same age as my dad. I greeted them politely and they all responded with a smile.
Another car beeped and I’m sure that must be Mr. Buenaventura. He parked right in front of our front door along with the cars from the other gentlemen here.
I was astonished when I saw who just went out of the car’s door. He smiled and waved at us like he’s excited to see us. He also waved the wine bottle that he brought.
“Guys, this is Mr. Buenaventura, the CEO of our company, my boss.” He said proudly while presenting his boss. Mr. Buenaventura chuckled.
My eyes widened with the person standing in front of me now. I can’t believe he’s the CEO. As my dad mentioned, he is a bachelor. That made sense. He’s just 23. But I can’t believe that someone this young can be the owner of a company.
“That’s a very formal introduction, Mr. Dy. Anyway, Mrs. Dy, I wish you a happy birthday!” Ace smiled while he offered the wine to my mom. I guess that’s his gift.
“This is Bliss, my daughter.” Dad tapped my shoulders when he introduced me. Ace looked at me and there goes the weird feeling on my chest. I felt my heart skip a beat. Our eyes met.
“Hello, Bliss. Nice seeing you again.” He said to me while smiling with his eyes disappearing. He offered a handshake. I shook hands with him. It was a cheery and hearty handshake.
“You’ve met before?” My dad asked. I gasped for a bit. My mouth opened as I’m finding the right words to say. I looked at my parents who were both waiting for my answer.
“Yup! We met on the elevator at the building last Wednesday. I recognized that she’s your daughter right away!” Ace replied like he was so proud of recognizing me. I bit my lip since I was still in shock about who he was. I looked at him while talking to my father.
“Why? Because of good genes, huh?” My dad joked around. My mom and Ace both laughed at what dad stated. I laughed as well, to ease the awkwardness I felt with his joke. I know my dad is funny but his jokes are embarrassing sometimes.
“Yup! You’re absolutely right.” Ace said. He smiled again and then looked at me. I felt my cheeks becoming red.
“C’mon, let’s eat?” My mom offered while she pointed at our dining area.
I sighed in relief. That eye contact just lasted for a second but it felt like an eternity. I can feel my palms are sweating. It was so awkward.
--
While eating, I feel out of place with all they’re talking about. It’s all about business, their family, about the house, cars, and any usual things grown-ups talk about. I just devoured my lasagna. I love everything my mom made. I looked up to her when it comes to cooking. She’s the best cook ever.
After eating, my mom asked me to bring out the cake. I took a deep breath. I don’t know if this cake will be delicious. The pressure that Ace will get to taste the cake that I baked can be so stressful. We sang my mom a happy birthday and she blew out the candle.
“Bliss made this cake.” My mom said as she triumphed over what I just made.
“My daughter’s a great baker.” My dad added. I felt my cheeks blush. I looked in front of me and realized that Ace was looking at me. I immediately looked away, embarrassed. I’m not that used to the attention. I just smiled.. awkwardly.
“She will be taking Culinary Arts; she wants to be a pastry chef someday.” Dad continued. His workmates were looking at me proudly. Someone even clapped his hands.
My mom gave slices of cake to everyone including me. I am nervous about how it tastes. I observed everyone’s reaction, afraid that they might not like it.
“Yum! This is so delicious! Homemade cakes are the best!” Mr. Sanchez complimented. I felt my shoulders relaxed. It was tense the moment they got here. What a relief.
“What do you think, Mr. Buenaventura?” Mr. Sanchez asked. My shoulders were back to being tensed again.
“This will be my new favorite.” Ace blasted. I looked at him while he’s chewing. He still looks cute even when he is chewing. He looked at me like he’s really fond of my cake. He smiled and gave me a thumbs-up. I felt giddy with his reaction. I bit my lip so that I can’t smile widely
“To be honest, I don’t want her to pursue that degree. I never knew anyone with that course.” My dad said, talking to his workmates including Ace.
“But as a parent, her dream is more important than anything else. So I’ll support her no matter what.” I smiled with that thought. His workmates agreed and praised him for being a supportive father. My mother held his hand.
“Follow your dream, nothing else is more fulfilling than that.” Ace said. I looked at him and for the first time, I saw him that serious while staring at me.
---
The guests were about to get home. We stood at the front of our house. My dad is busy talking while my mom is in the kitchen. Everyone was busy talking and I felt Ace was looking at me.
“Hey, your cake was good. Can you make me some, maybe on my birthday?” He said and I can’t tell if it’s a joke or not.
“Sure.” I just said politely. He smiled at me. His smile can be really contagious. It’s cheerful and genuine. While I was staring at him, I remembered the books that I left in his car.
“Hey! Uh. I think I left something in your car last time?” I asked him tensely. I was panicking to get out of his car last time. My stupid brain probably left it there.
“Oh really? Uhm, unfortunately, I didn’t bring the car I drove last time. Is it okay if I’ll give it to you soon? I can’t bring it to you tomorrow since I have a business trip. Will it be alright?” He said while his arms were resting on his waist. I stared at his red converse shoes and back to his formal attire. I smiled a little bit.
I was not surprised that he brought a different car. He’s the CEO of an automobile company, I’m sure he has tons of it.
“There’s no problem.” I said, but then I remembered my books. There are a lot of problems. Please, Ace, don’t look at what's inside that paper bag.
Ace smiled at me.
“Thank you. You and your cake are awesome.” He praised me. I smiled at him again.
The guests all went home when it was past midnight. This day was such a memorable day.
“Awesome.” What he said earlier echoed in my brain as I covered myself with a blanket. I screamed under my pillow from all the flutter I felt inside. I’m glad he appreciated my cake.
“Maybe it’s true that a way through a man’s heart is through his stomach.” I said as I closed my eyes while still smiling. This is indeed a good night.
Wednesday came and it’s tennis day again with my dad. I pressed the 29th button of the elevator at my dad’s company building.I am still in disbelief that Ace, the guy I encountered in this elevator, was my dad’s boss. Also known as the CEO. I can’t stop thinking if Ace was here in the building as well. I mean, I just want my books back. That’s it. We made a deal that he will bring those back to me.I shook my head and adjusted my tennis bag as soon as I stepped out of the elevator.I entered my dad’s office but to my dismay, I saw him napping on his desk. I don’t know if I’ll wake him up, he might get annoyed with me if I wake him up. Maybe he’s tired and needs some rest. What a hardworking old man.I put
One week before my first ever semester in college start. I am excited and nervous at the same time. Will I live the life I had when I was in high school or have my best life in this university? I hope it’s the latter one.I’m at my University now since there is an orientation for fresh students. University wants us to be familiar with this place before the opening of this school year starts. I observed the surroundings. This place will be my new environment for the next few years.I’m still anxious about getting bullied. Our house is a two-hour drive away from here, and I need to rent an apartment near this university. At first, I was hesitant, but I have to be independent. I will miss my parents so much. I wonder how things will go through
Two months have passed and I can say that college is the best. Though I am still unable to grasp the idea of living alone. But I’m pretty sure that I can slay this independent life. I’m doing well with my class and also with my friends. Since Lunan and I are classmates in every subject, we’re always together. I’m used to him being talkative. I am even grateful for it as there’s no dead air when we’re together. No boring moments. He’s responsible for the topic, I contribute the laughter. I even got to know Anvien more, I knew almost all the things about her. I laughed at the spoiled brat part. I can never imagine her like that. Though, sometimes you can see it when she’s playing around with Lunan and when she gets little to no sleep. My friends are the goofiest yet the nicest.
One week has passed since Ace stayed in my apartment for a night. My fever only lasted for a day. I'm glad it did. I don't have anyone to take care of me.I bit my lip when I remember how Ace took care of me last time. It was not much but since it was him, my dad's boss, I think I went out of the limit. I just wish he didn't think of me as a burden.“Can I borrow a pen?” Lunan whispered, I almost jolted. I rolled my eyes at him but still lent him some. We’re in the middle of a lecture now on our subject that gets me bored sometimes. He mimicked the way I rolled my eyes. I got the eye-rolling from Anvien, she always does that and that thing is very contagious. At first, it started as a joke, but rolling eyes is very therapeutic. I get it now.
Since my 18th birthday is coming, my mom and I were looking for a gown at a tailor shop here in the mall. She said that this tailoring shop is the best when it comes to gowns and dresses. The theme for my party is Masquerade since my parents want people to be surprised with how I look when I don’t have these glasses on. It’s kinda cringing, though. I know. I was kinda nervous that my dress would be revealing. Well, sleeveless is revealing enough for me, what more if it shows my back? Or even my whole shoulder. I don't like the feeling of my skin being that exposed. My mom is kinda conservative for me, but I know with this kind of event, she would be all out. I know her. My mom took out two papers that have the design of the dress on it and let me pick cho
We have a class presentation now about a school project but it is not just an ordinary school project, but a cooking project. Well, more like a cooking contest. It’s like the cooking show, Master Chef. Since I am a culinary student, this is a part of it. We don’t necessarily need to make our own recipe, but we have to follow the ingredients that our professor instructed. Lunan and I are partners, of course. We are very much excited for this event because the prize is absolutely spectacular. The winners of this event will have a scholarship in one of the best culinary school in France! Yes! France! Who wouldn't want to go there right? I have to ace this contest.
It is Friday night and I haven’t gone home yet to my parent’s house since I have a lot of school work to do. I was getting hungry so I decided to walk to the nearest restaurant in my apartment that I always see when going to school. The place was just small but tidy. A lady greeted me. She looks like she's the same age as my mom, but a little older. She seems nice. She smiled at me. I ordered spaghetti and creme caramel pudding for dessert. I have a sweet tooth, I always like to eat something sweet after eating a meal. Or even not. The lady was alone so she also served my food. "Thank you." I said. I kinda miss my mom because of her. Now I am guilty of not coming home to my parents. I fe
One week has passed since the incident and the street that I’ve walked on has installed CCTV and new lights. Thankfully. My father was scared when he got the news that I almost got harmed so he sent complaints to the rightful authority about it. I'm glad he did. I somehow feel safe now. Good thing my dad really cares about me and my safety. It’s Saturday morning, no classes since it is the weekend and I am on my way to Mama Eve. We agreed that I will assist her in cooking this time and she will teach me the recipe for her spaghetti and creme caramel pudding. I am excited about this! I will get to know the recipe of the best spaghetti I have ever tasted. When I arrived at her little restaura
Ace is still in the hospital, the doctor said that he needs to stay in the hospital for a while because his injury was mainly in his head, so he has to be monitored. I still feel guilty that he has to suffer from this, but I’m glad that I am able to take care of him. If I didn't change my mind about France, I’ll be leaving 3 days from now. I think it would be selfish if I go there and leave Ace alone here. I haven’t told him yet about this, but I’m sure he will understand. He’s sleeping soundly now. Though, sometimes, I’m still anxious about seeing him sleeping. I’m still scared that he might not wake up this time. But I have to let go of that thought. That kind of negativity should stay away from me. I have to keep in my mind that he is safe now and everything will be alright. As I watch him sl
Everything was blurry. I can’t even feel my legs. I don’t hear anything except for the ringing in my ears. My heart, I can’t hear my heart. I think it stopped beating. “Bliss! Bliss!” My dad called me. I hugged my parents when I saw them. They’re also here in the hospital. “What happened?” He asked. “I-I don’t know. I just heard a honking, then something crashed, then I saw Ace...” I started crying again. I couldn’t even talk properly. There is a lump in my throat that's hindering me from talking. All I want is to cry. “T-there on the ground.” My mom hugged me tightly. I don’t know what happened. Everything was so fast that I couldn’t comprehend. It was my fault. E
Ace's POV: Flashback from 4 years agoI heard someone sniff her nose. I rolled my eyes since I knew what was going on."Don't leave me. Please." She said. I chuckled. She held my hand like she wasn't eager to let me go.Her eyes were red from crying and when a tear just came out from it, I was taken back for a bit. I didn't know I can feel pity when I see her this way."Wow. That was really good. Your acting is superb." I said as I clapped my hands."Really? Do you think I'll do great?" Jelly asked. She is practicing her lines for her taping later. As a supportive boyfriend, I am helping her deliver it. She's great. She doesn't even need some practice, but my girlfriend is such a perfectionist."Okay, I'll take a shower and then you drive me to where my taping is." She said as she sounds so demanding. I don
After cooking for my and Ace's dinner in his office, I packed the meals very nicely. I want it to be really special. Dad was even jealous since I prepared Ace a very special meal, I haven’t done that to him before. I feel bad about that but I guess I have to do that to my dad next time. Boyfriend duties, first. Sorry, Dad.I just walked to Buenaventura's company building with a big smile on my face. It feels nice to walk here again. I haven’t walked here for a long time. Dad doesn't play tennis every Wednesday now since they have a busy schedule, that’s why I can’t visit him there every Wednesday. They have been really busy these past few months. It's good to be back here.I rode the elevator. I just remember the first meeting with Ace here.
I have one week left before going to France. I can finally say that I am excited or should I say, Je suis excité! I only know french basic words, Lunan and I studied for that. We had a French lesson. But two months is not enough for me to nail that language, besides, french is hard to learn. It’s the weekend and I have a date with Ace. We’ll be going to a Marine theme park, which I'm very excited about. We’re just making the most out of my remaining time in this country.I will surely miss him. Of course, who wouldn’t? Our relationship will be long-distance now. Distance makes the heart fonder, they said. I have to trust in that. Plus, I trust Ace with all my heart. We can make this relationship work.
I was holding my phone the whole ride home wondering if Clyde would message me or call me since I need an explanation why he never told me anything about his father and even Ace. All this time, I am surrounded by the Buenaventura Clan.Come to think of it, I am friends with Ace’s cousins. My best friend is his half-brother. He is my dad’s boss.I don’t know if that’s funny. Sure, there’s no problem. It’s just weird that they are all related.I looked at Ace. He looked serious while driving. He said he was not mad about me not telling him sooner about France. I’m glad he’s not but I think he's not in his best mood. He looked serious and I hate that.I’m still not sure about France.
I am grateful that I got to guess what Clyde's favorite cake flavor is. It was a chocolate cake. Very simple. I feel bad again ‘cause I was planning in my head that I’ll bake him one instead. But, there’s always the next time. We were eating the cake that I bought him. Ace would be here at any minute. I was still a little bit anxious about what will happen if both of them interact again. The last time they saw each other was the night I got super drunk. I hope they don’t fight again like what happened. Aside from my dad, these two are the most precious men in my life. Clyde is my best friend, and Ace is my lovely boyfriend. I want them both to be friends or even just interact nicely with each other since I held them close to my heart.
After Ace left for his work, I scanned for my clothes again and my purse. I haven’t checked my phone yet since last night and I still don’t know where my clothes are. Everything was just so swift that I couldn’t think where Ace took off my clothes. Then I remembered what we just did last night. I can't believe I did that. My cheeks felt hot. I am not that innocent anymore.I smiled at the thought of it. I just couldn’t believe that someone like me, a shy and demure girl, would do something like that.I heard my phone ring inside my purse. It was Clyde. I winced in dismay when I remembered that it’s his birthday today. I was supposed to be with him right now, how could I forget?"Happy birthday!"
Warning: SPG!! We stopped kissing for a minute and just stared at each other. Smiling and giggling like little kids. His hands are on my waist while he’s still on the floor and facing me. I brushed his hair using my hands. I felt grateful for how he handled the way I acted earlier. That was also the first time I got my feelings hurt for a bit. But it was not his fault. I just felt insecure. I mean, who wouldn’t? But I know better now. Comparing yourself to others is not healthy. As he said. I should not be insecure since we all have our own beauty. Ace and I kissed again. I couldn’t think of anything now since our kiss got more deepened. It was sweet but it’s b
