Chapter 1

Author: Hardy Banana
I finally married Zach Gordon.

He was a bit drunk when he placed his arms on the bed. The flower on his shirt pocket was very beautiful.

I loved Zach so much that it hurt.

I grabbed his tie, and he leaned down toward me.

During our wedding, Zach kissed me for the first time. It was just a quick peck on my lips through the veil, but I knew that I would never forget how warm his lips felt.

He finally kissed me, but it was a gentle kiss on my forehead instead of my lips.

My heart fluttered uncontrollably, and I hugged him.

Last month, Sophie Freeman asked me what I wished for on my birthday.

I told her my wish was to sleep with Zach.

She was surprised that I did not aim higher.

Anyway, my biggest wish was indeed to sleep with Zach.

Today, my wish came true.

However, the phone on the bedside table suddenly rang and ruined the mood.

Zach’s ringtone was like an alarm; even those far away could hear it.

He glanced at his phone and ignored it, but it rang nonstop.

He finally picked it up and said in a low voice, “Hello?”

I secretly nibbled on his neck, and he frowned because it tickled. Then, his expression grew tense. I had no idea who was calling him.

“What? Where? Are you sure?”

He pushed me away abruptly and wrapped himself in a towel before he entered the bathroom.

While the shower was running, I could hear his voice on the phone, but it was choppy.

“Which hospital? Is it really her? I’ll come right away.”

He came out of the bathroom dripping wet, and I sat up in bed with a blanket wrapped around me. I watched as he quickly put on the shirt, pants, and jacket he had taken off earlier.

“Zach.” I look at him in confusion. He seemed extremely tense. I had not seen him like that in a long time. “Where are you going?”

As he put on his suit, he gave me a quick glance and said, “Why don’t you go to bed first?”

I heard him close the door as he left. Then, he rushed downstairs and started his car outside.

I ran to the window in my robe and only saw the taillights of Zach’s car.

It had started raining, and the cold, damp air was coming in. I was mostly uncovered, so I ended up sneezing loudly.

I shut the window and closed the curtains before I sat on the bed hugging my knees.

What made him leave on our wedding night?

I looked at the red stains on the white satin bedsheet and touched them. They were still a bit damp.

If Sophie learned about this, she would probably laugh at me forever.

The only person who could make Zach look so out of it was Cecilia Wilson, his first love.

She had been missing for so long that I had almost forgotten about her.

I fell asleep in that position. By the time I woke up in the morning, my legs and arms were numb.

My phone rang, and I reached for it with my numb arm. Sophie was calling, not Zach.

Her voice was full of mischief and a little excitement. “Hey, how was your wedding night? Did you have a great time?”

Great time? I spent the whole night alone.

I tried to stretch my numb legs, and it hurt so much that I groaned.

On the other end, she said lewdly, “You’re not going to show me what happened, are you?”

“Get lost,” I said angrily and hung up.

I let my mind wander for a moment. Once I could feel my arms and legs again, I got up. Paula Medina, Zach’s personal assistant, called me. “Mrs. Gordon, Mr. Gordon has booked a flight to Northern Europe for 4 p.m. today. A car will pick you both up at 2 p.m.”

“Where’s Zach?” I asked her.

“Huh?” Paula sounded even more surprised than I did.

It looked like she did not know where Zach had gone.

Never mind. We were heading to Northern Europe for our honeymoon anyway. I previously mentioned that I wanted to see the aurora in Iceland, and Zach remembered.

After I washed up, I packed my things. It was cold in Iceland, so Zach had gotten us both thick and long down jackets that matched.

I touched the smooth fabric, and when I turned around, I saw the bloodstains on the bed again.

There was no need to regret anything. We would have plenty of time in Iceland, and we would have many chances to enjoy ourselves.

I blushed. If Bailey Crawford found out, she would definitely call me shameless.

It was almost noon after I packed two large suitcases. I was so hungry that I felt dizzy.

I went downstairs to the kitchen to find something to eat. Then, I changed my clothes, put on light makeup, and called Zach.

The call went through, but he did not pick it up.

I sat on the suitcases waiting for him, but only Paula and the driver showed up to pick me up.

I looked inside the car and asked, “Where’s Zach?”

Paula looked just as confused and asked, “Mr. Gordon isn’t with you?”

Cecilia had been missing for three years. But she showed up on my wedding night and interrupted my honeymoon with Zach.Even though we had grown up together, we had always been enemies. She was holding onto the railing and swaying. She could fall if she was not careful.Ever since I could remember, Cecilia had been very afraid of death. When she was little, she would even go to the hospital after an ant bite. The wind blew her hair around, and she looked at me through her hair. I looked back at her. All of a sudden, she waved at me. I was hesitant, and I stayed where I was. She laughed and seemed to mock me for being too scared to approach.Cecilia was still just as irritating after three years.I disliked her as much as she disliked me.Her body swayed like a torn flag in the strong wind. When she wobbled, I instinctively ran over and grabbed her arm. Then, I saw her pleased smile. I was still being too kind. She pulled hard on my wrist and tried to drag me toward the raili

He seemed to be in a hurry, as he did not wait for me to reply.“Just sign it and give it to my lawyer before the end of the day.”With that, he turned to leave. I grabbed his sleeve across the desk. “Zach, you…”With my temper, I would have slapped him.I had been helping him for three years. But the moment Cecilia came back, he wanted to get a divorce.I probably did not matter to him at all.He pulled his sleeve away, and the sharp edge of his exquisite cufflink cut into my hurt hand. I gasped in pain.“Cassia, Cecilia’s back. I need to be with her.”“Are you kidding me?” I scoffed. “Where was she when you were struggling and at your worst? Who was there for you then? Now that she’s back, you want to be with her. Who am I to you?”He did not answer, probably because he did not know how.I ran around the desk to stand in front of him, but I had to look up. I usually switched out my high heels for flats in the office, so he was much taller than me.His sad expression surpri

I’ll fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow.”Sophie opened the car door and pulled me out. “I’ll drive you home. It’s dangerous for you to drive in this state.”“What about your car?”“I’ll get my driver to drive it back later.”I did not argue and got into the back seat.Sophie drove really fast. Even though I was not asleep, I kept my eyes shut. While driving, she suddenly asked, “Have you slept with Zach?”There was no point in asking that after everything that just happened.I turned away and refused to answer.“That jerk! Zach left. I knew that I could not make him stay.I stood against the wooden handrail on the stairs and heard him drive away.My ankle hurt a lot, and I felt dizzy.I felt like a complete loser before him.Mrs. Hudson, the housekeeper, came downstairs after she heard all the noise. She was still sleepy and unaware of what had happened. She seemed worried when she saw me looking so down. She brought me a pair of slippers and said, “Mrs. Gordon, don’t stand barefoot. It’s cold in the fall.”I did not move, so she crouched to put the slippers on me. When she touched my ankle, I cried out in pain. Startled, she pulled back. “Oh, no! Mrs. Gordon, your ankle is swollen!”She helped me to the couch and started searching the house. “I’ll get the first-aid kit. You need to apply some medicine and massage it. No, you should use ice to reduce the swelling first. Then, you can massage it.”Mrs. Hudson was rushing around like a butterfly, and everything around me looked blurry.Actually

Of course, that was not proof, but I had known Cecilia for many years. Based on the way she looked and her state of mind, I did not believe it.A woman with an incurable illness would not be in the mood to fight another woman over a man. She should be focusing on trying to stay alive.I disliked Cecilia’s smile, and it seemed like we were destined to be enemies.“Send her back.” I waved weakly at Sophie and Oliver.“You’re letting her go just like that?” Oliver shot to his feet. I pulled him back down. “You idiot! Are you trying to make Zach dislike me even more?”“You still care about his feelings?”“Yeah. He’s a jerk.”They kept arguing, and I felt like my head was going to explode.I pointed at Sophie. “You, take her back to the hospital.”Sophie stood up. “I’ll make you a cup of coffee.”“I don’t want coffee! Sophie knocked on my door the next day around 7 a.m.I only managed to fall asleep at about 2 a.m., so I had a bad headache. I sat on the bed as she ran over excitedly and asked, “Are you busy this morning?” “Go away.” I lay down again. “Come to the city hall with me. I’m getting married!”“Why do you need me there? Am I going to breastfeed you?”“You don’t have milk right now.” I was disgusted by our conversation. Rachel sat up from the bed and asked, “Why are you going to the city hall?”“To get married.”“Shouldn’t you be going to a church for that? There’s supposed to be a priest with a bible that asks if you’re willing to marry this person next to you regardless of… something?”“That’s a religious wedding. Besides, it has to be lawful. What we’re doing today is the legal side of things.” Sophie carried Rachel up from the bed. “Do you want to be a witness to our marriage?” “Yay, sure!” Rachel immediately beamed and agreed. “I want to be the priest who holds the bibl

Cecilia had no shame at all. I would be speechless if this worked on Zach. After a while, she walked out dejectedly with her flowers. It seemed like she did not even manage to enter his office. She stood there in annoyance for a while before she suddenly looked over in my direction. I could see her, but she might not be able to see me. I was on a high floor, and the sun was blinding. Right then, Hailey gave me a call. I knew that she wanted to rant about Cecilia. Sure enough, Hailey started to complain, “Ms. Freeman, Cecilia is really shameless. I’ve never seen such a shameless woman. When Mr. Gordon was cut off from Gordon Corporation, she abandoned him immediately. Now that she knows he’s going to be Gordon Corporation’s acting CEO, she instantly starts visiting him again. I really can’t stand her.” “Hasn’t she always been like this?” I was unfazed. “Fortunately, Mr. Gordon is not willing to see her.” Hailey sounded relieved. “Do you really think he won’t see her fo

I looked at Austin’s pale face, and I was at a loss for words. His argument was reasonable, and I had no way to refute it. I was upset, but I could not cry. I felt a heavy feeling in my chest, and I found it hard to breathe. He looked at me and suddenly smiled. “Look at your face. Have I ever said that I liked Sophie? I don’t like girls like her. I prefer girls like you who are smart, beautiful, and decisive. Why don’t you marry me after you give birth to your babies?”I did not want to joke around with him. It was not funny. After that, Lucy exited the bridal shop and got into the backseat of the car. I stood in front of the bridal shop and watched as his car disappeared into the corner. “Cassia,” Sophie called out to me. I turned around. “What?”“Whose side are you on? I realize you’ve been extra nice to Austin recently. Have you forgotten that he’s a jerk?”“Watch your mouth.”I got into my car unhappily. “I’ll make a move first.”“Aren’t we having dinner together to

I knew that he was looking at the photos of him and Sophie in her wedding gown. Perhaps this would be the only time in his entire life that he could stand next to Sophie while she was dressed in a wedding gown. I felt the waterworks coming. When I tried to look for tissue papers in my bag, Zach called me. He sounded a bit excited. “Cassia, there’s this person overseas who has the same blood type as Austin. He has ALS, which is a fatal motor neuron disease. His family has already signed an organ donation form for him, and his condition recently worsened. He may pass in a month’s time, so I got in contact with them. His family has agreed to donate his heart to Austin.” “Really?” It was good news, and I almost leaped in joy. I glanced at Austin excitedly. He was staring intently at his phone, so he did not notice me. “Does Austin have to leave immediately?”“It’s still early. We can leave when the donor’s condition worsens.” I estimated the time. Zach said that it would ta

Sophie could easily start a fight wherever she went. I immediately went over and saw that Austin’s forehead had turned red. It seemed to be getting swollen. I kicked Sophie in anger. “Is there something wrong with you? What are you doing?” “Why did you kick me? Didn’t you hear what he just said?”Austin bent down and picked up Sophie’s phone for her. “Luckily, your phone screen isn’t cracked. It’s fine if my skull is cracked; it can heal.” Sophie took her phone, and it immediately unlocked due to face ID. Her wallpaper was a photo of Kingston and her. She had just changed the wallpaper yesterday. It used to be a photo of me and her. Austin was the one who had taken that photo. Even though Austin was not directly in the photo, it felt like it was a photo of the three of us. He must have noticed it. He smiled and said, “I’ll make a move. Sophie’s wedding preparations were progressing quickly. She limped to work in the mornings and dragged me along in the afternoons to buy wedding stuff.I felt like the wedding was just an excuse for her to go shopping.“This afternoon, Kingston and I are trying on our wedding outfits. You should come too.”“It’s your wedding. Why should I come?”“To help me choose! I look good in everything, so it’s hard to pick.”“If it’s that hard, just buy them all. Aren’t you rich?”“Why are you so grouchy?” She leaned closer and observed me. “Cassia, are your hormones off balance?”“I’m pregnant, so everything’s a mess right now.”After some thought, I called Austin and told him, “Sophie’s trying on wedding dresses this afternoon.”“Okay,” he replied in his usual lifeless tone.“Aren’t you going to say anything to her?”“Don’t eat too much.
