Chapter 5

Author: Hardy Banana
Sophie said she would go out with me for drinks, but I was so down that I did not even feel like drinking.

I told her, “We can do that another day. I need to go home and get some sleep.”

“I don’t think you can sleep.” She leaned against my car door and looked at me.

“I can sleep just fine. I’ll fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow.”

Sophie opened the car door and pulled me out. “I’ll drive you home. It’s dangerous for you to drive in this state.”

“What about your car?”

“I’ll get my driver to drive it back later.”

I did not argue and got into the back seat.

Sophie drove really fast. Even though I was not asleep, I kept my eyes shut.

While driving, she suddenly asked, “Have you slept with Zach?”

There was no point in asking that after everything that just happened.

I turned away and refused to answer.

“That jerk! He slept with you while he thought about his ex! I really want to shoot him!”

Sophie always walked the talk. If she had a gun, she would actually shoot him.

She dropped me off at my door. The garden gate still had wedding balloons, and the front door was decorated.

I asked if she wanted to come in, but she gritted her teeth and said, “No. It’ll only make me angry.”

“I’ll go inside, then.” As I opened the gate, Sophie ran over and grabbed my wrist. “Don’t agree to the divorce yet. Let me look into it first.”

I nodded. “Okay.”

I entered the house and lay on the bed. But I could not fall asleep despite feeling tired.

Sophie knew me well enough to know that I would not be able to sleep.

Just as I was about to doze off in the middle of the night, I heard some noises in the hallway. Was Zach back?

I quickly sat up, and Zach came in through the door.

He looked tired and seemed surprised to see me awake. He gave me a quick nod. “Still awake?”

“Yeah,” I said and got out of bed. “I’ll run a bath for you.”

Before we got married, my mom had given me a lecture on how to be a good wife. It was not who I was, but I was willing to change for Zach.

As I looked for some slippers, he stopped me. “No need. I’ll leave after I grab some stuff.”

He then opened the closet and pulled out a big suitcase. I saw it when we first moved over, and I asked him why he had bought such a big one.

It finally made sense. He had been planning to leave at a moment’s notice.

I checked the wall clock. It was 1:30 a.m.

I clenched my fists and took a deep breath to keep my voice steady. “Are you moving out?”

“You can keep the house.” He put the suitcase on the floor and entered the closet to pack his clothes.

I watched him quietly. His reason for wanting a divorce was so ridiculous that even a child would not believe it.

He soon finished packing and stood up. While he faced away, he asked in a flat tone, “Have you signed it?”

I knew that he meant the divorce agreement, but I pretended not to understand. “What?”

“The divorce agreement.”

I got a bit choked up. “We just got married two days ago. Everything in this room is still decorated for our wedding. Zach, even if you want to take care of Cecilia, you don’t have to divorce me.”

“How am I supposed to take care of her?” He looked at me as he held the suitcase. I could barely see his face in the dim light. “Do you think Cecilia would accept a married man taking care of her?”

“So, you’re giving up on me that easily?” I said, even though I knew it would not change anything.

After that, I felt even more discouraged because he did not look at me. He just picked up his suitcase and walked toward the door.

I put my pride aside and ran to block his way.

I was tired, and so was he. It was clear that we should not be arguing at a time like this.

However, I could not accept getting a divorce just three days into our marriage.

He frowned a little. He had always been impatient with me. “Cassia, move out of the way,” he said in a low voice.

“Do I really mean nothing to you?” My voice was hoarse. After hours without sleep, I felt like a zombie.

He finally looked at me, but his expression was cold, like the moonlight tonight.

He simply pulled me aside and walked out of the room with his suitcase.

I ran after him barefoot, but he moved fast, even with the big suitcase.

The wooden floor was too slippery. In my rush down the stairs, I twisted my ankle and cried out in pain.

He did not seem to hear me and kept going downstairs. I pushed through the pain and ran after him.

When I hugged him from behind, I could smell hospital disinfectant and Cecilia’s favorite perfume on him.

They covered his usual smell, a pleasant peppermint shampoo.

Over the past three years, we had worked closely for the company. Whenever he approached me to talk about work, I would smell this familiar scent in his hair.

I held onto him tightly, as though I was drowning in a vast sea and Zach was my only chance of survival.

I pressed my face against his back and kept pleading, “Zach, don’t go. Please don’t go.”

His hands that touched my wrists were warm as always.

Instead of holding my hands, he pried them away from his waist.

My ankle hurt badly, and I had to balance on one foot like a crane.

The living room lights were so bright that I could barely keep my eyes open. All I felt was his cold gaze.

“Cassia, why are you making things harder for yourself? When I agreed to marry you, I never said it was because I loved you.” He was barely holding his composure.

“You don’t love me?” I looked up at him. “Not even a little bit?”

He looked at me with such a straight face that it felt like he could stab me with a sword without even flinching.

I had never seen much emotion from Zach. The only time he showed warmth was when he was with Cecilia.

Suddenly, I felt defeated.

I thought I was starting to fill his heart, but I guess I was not.

I had been reaching for his sleeve, but my hand dropped down weakly.

Then, he said, “Cassia, I’ll never love you.”

I knew that I could not make him stay.I stood against the wooden handrail on the stairs and heard him drive away.My ankle hurt a lot, and I felt dizzy.I felt like a complete loser before him.Mrs. Hudson, the housekeeper, came downstairs after she heard all the noise. She was still sleepy and unaware of what had happened. She seemed worried when she saw me looking so down. She brought me a pair of slippers and said, “Mrs. Gordon, don’t stand barefoot. It’s cold in the fall.”I did not move, so she crouched to put the slippers on me. When she touched my ankle, I cried out in pain. Startled, she pulled back. “Oh, no! Mrs. Gordon, your ankle is swollen!”She helped me to the couch and started searching the house. “I’ll get the first-aid kit. You need to apply some medicine and massage it. No, you should use ice to reduce the swelling first. Then, you can massage it.”Mrs. Hudson was rushing around like a butterfly, and everything around me looked blurry.Actually

Of course, that was not proof, but I had known Cecilia for many years. Based on the way she looked and her state of mind, I did not believe it.A woman with an incurable illness would not be in the mood to fight another woman over a man. She should be focusing on trying to stay alive.I disliked Cecilia’s smile, and it seemed like we were destined to be enemies.“Send her back.” I waved weakly at Sophie and Oliver.“You’re letting her go just like that?” Oliver shot to his feet. I pulled him back down. “You idiot! Are you trying to make Zach dislike me even more?”“You still care about his feelings?”“Yeah. He’s a jerk.”They kept arguing, and I felt like my head was going to explode.I pointed at Sophie. “You, take her back to the hospital.”Sophie stood up. “I’ll make you a cup of coffee.”“I don’t want coffee! I shouldn’t have caused problems in your relationship. I just wanted to see you one last time before I die. Being with you these past few days has been enough. Really, Zach. Sophie arrived half an hour later with my shoes and coat. She crouched with gritted teeth to help me put on my shoes and drape my coat over my shoulders. I could tell that she was about to start cursing. As expected, she did so after she helped me up.“Cassia, are you serious?! Why do you make yourself look so pathetic?! That jerk is blind! He doesn’t deserve you! He’s an idiot!”“Stop yelling.” I pulled her toward her car. “I’m freezing. Let’s get something to eat.”Sophie took me to a restaurant for chicken soup. The idea was shocking and seemingly unrealistic. However, after I received my mom’s message, I thought that it might work.[Go to the lawyer’s office tomorrow at 3 p.m. and sign the agreement. I lay quietly in bed. I had never been seriously ill before. The only time I ended up in the hospital was when I was nine. I went tree climbing with Zach and the others but fell and broke my leg.The tree had round, orange-like fruits. Cecilia had stood under the tree and softly said, “I’m thirsty.”Like a fool, I climbed up to pick some for her. It turned out that they were not oranges but calamondin, which were mostly used for making perfumes.I tried one, and it was so sour and bitter that I shivered and fell from the tree. While I was climbing, Cecilia went off to catch butterflies with Zach and the others. The grass below the tree was thick, so no one knew I had fallen. I lay in the grass for half the afternoon while the adults searched for me. No one realized that I was lying there in the grass. However, Cecilia knew that I had climbed the tree. She should have realized that I was in the grass.Back then, I was too young to think much of it. I just assumed that Cecilia had

He finally showed a bit of emotion, and at that moment, I saw deep compassion in his eyes.I still mattered to him. Even if he did not have romantic feelings for me, we had a bond from growing up together. He glanced at me and quickly turned away. His hair moved and sparkled like the leaves on the tall tree outside. He did not speak, but I could tell what the matter was.Surprisingly, I felt very calm and composed.“How long do I have left? Is it late-stage?”“It’s not as bad as you think,” he answered quickly but did not turn to me. “Just rest. The doctor has suggested conservative treatment. You need to focus on taking care of your stomach.”His voice was tense. I knew that my condition was bad, probably worse than Cecilia’s.“So, we—”Before I could finish, he cut me off. “Just focus on getting better. Don’t worry about anything else.”Once my IV was finished, he said, “I’ll get the doctor.”He could have used the call button, but maybe he was too upset and did not know

Zach stayed the night in my room. He had a morning meeting at his office the next day, so he had already left when I woke up. It was Hayden’s turn to do the rounds today, so a group of young doctors and nurses were following him. Hayden himself was also very young. At twenty-five years old, he was already one of the surgical unit’s top talents. Sophie and I had privately discussed the reason for his success; it was a combination of his own hard work and his father’s role as the hospital dean. We would always make fun of him, but he was a good sport who never got mad over it.He solidified his status as a truly capable doctor after he completed a famous surgery perfectly. He had just graduated and started working at the hospital when it happened.Hayden stood before my bed. He could not directly examine my gastritis, so he glanced at my wound. “The wound from your surgery is very small. You won’t get a scar from it.” “Understood.” “Do take care of your diet. Sophie knocked on my door the next day around 7 a.m.I only managed to fall asleep at about 2 a.m., so I had a bad headache. I sat on the bed as she ran over excitedly and asked, “Are you busy this morning?” “Go away.” I lay down again. “Come to the city hall with me. I’m getting married!”“Why do you need me there? Am I going to breastfeed you?”“You don’t have milk right now.” I was disgusted by our conversation. Rachel sat up from the bed and asked, “Why are you going to the city hall?”“To get married.”“Shouldn’t you be going to a church for that? There’s supposed to be a priest with a bible that asks if you’re willing to marry this person next to you regardless of… something?”“That’s a religious wedding. Besides, it has to be lawful. What we’re doing today is the legal side of things.” Sophie carried Rachel up from the bed. “Do you want to be a witness to our marriage?” “Yay, sure!” Rachel immediately beamed and agreed. “I want to be the priest who holds the bibl

Cecilia had no shame at all. I would be speechless if this worked on Zach. After a while, she walked out dejectedly with her flowers. It seemed like she did not even manage to enter his office. She stood there in annoyance for a while before she suddenly looked over in my direction. I could see her, but she might not be able to see me. I was on a high floor, and the sun was blinding. Right then, Hailey gave me a call. I knew that she wanted to rant about Cecilia. Sure enough, Hailey started to complain, “Ms. Freeman, Cecilia is really shameless. I’ve never seen such a shameless woman. When Mr. Gordon was cut off from Gordon Corporation, she abandoned him immediately. Now that she knows he’s going to be Gordon Corporation’s acting CEO, she instantly starts visiting him again. I really can’t stand her.” “Hasn’t she always been like this?” I was unfazed. “Fortunately, Mr. Gordon is not willing to see her.” Hailey sounded relieved. “Do you really think he won’t see her fo

I looked at Austin’s pale face, and I was at a loss for words. His argument was reasonable, and I had no way to refute it. I was upset, but I could not cry. I felt a heavy feeling in my chest, and I found it hard to breathe. He looked at me and suddenly smiled. “Look at your face. Have I ever said that I liked Sophie? I don’t like girls like her. I prefer girls like you who are smart, beautiful, and decisive. Why don’t you marry me after you give birth to your babies?”I did not want to joke around with him. It was not funny. After that, Lucy exited the bridal shop and got into the backseat of the car. I stood in front of the bridal shop and watched as his car disappeared into the corner. “Cassia,” Sophie called out to me. I turned around. “What?”“Whose side are you on? I realize you’ve been extra nice to Austin recently. Have you forgotten that he’s a jerk?”“Watch your mouth.”I got into my car unhappily. “I’ll make a move first.”“Aren’t we having dinner together to

I knew that he was looking at the photos of him and Sophie in her wedding gown. Perhaps this would be the only time in his entire life that he could stand next to Sophie while she was dressed in a wedding gown. I felt the waterworks coming. When I tried to look for tissue papers in my bag, Zach called me. He sounded a bit excited. “Cassia, there’s this person overseas who has the same blood type as Austin. He has ALS, which is a fatal motor neuron disease. His family has already signed an organ donation form for him, and his condition recently worsened. He may pass in a month’s time, so I got in contact with them. His family has agreed to donate his heart to Austin.” “Really?” It was good news, and I almost leaped in joy. I glanced at Austin excitedly. He was staring intently at his phone, so he did not notice me. “Does Austin have to leave immediately?”“It’s still early. We can leave when the donor’s condition worsens.” I estimated the time. Zach said that it would ta

Sophie could easily start a fight wherever she went. I immediately went over and saw that Austin’s forehead had turned red. It seemed to be getting swollen. I kicked Sophie in anger. “Is there something wrong with you? What are you doing?” “Why did you kick me? Didn’t you hear what he just said?”Austin bent down and picked up Sophie’s phone for her. “Luckily, your phone screen isn’t cracked. It’s fine if my skull is cracked; it can heal.” Sophie took her phone, and it immediately unlocked due to face ID. Her wallpaper was a photo of Kingston and her. She had just changed the wallpaper yesterday. It used to be a photo of me and her. Austin was the one who had taken that photo. Even though Austin was not directly in the photo, it felt like it was a photo of the three of us. He must have noticed it. He smiled and said, “I’ll make a move. Tell Lucy I’ll be waiting for her in the car.” Austin walked out of the bridal shop, and Sophie looked dispirited. “I was quite happy, bu
