A cold sensation on my arm wakes me from my sleep. I groan, keeping my eyes closed as I try to figure out where I am.

I turn around and adjust the blanket but freeze when I feel something stirring next to me. I take a moment to figure out where I am.

The heat from Jake enfolds me and my breath catches in my throat. We both must have fallen asleep during the movie, but I don't know how we ended up like this.

My hand rests lightly on his chest, my head nestled on his shoulder.

I bury my face in the crook of his neck, taking in his steady breathing. A faint snore escapes his lips and a small smile from mine.

I shift closer to Jake. I could stay like this for quite a while.

The coldness touches my arm again and I turn my head as slowly as possible away from Jake's warmth.

Who is that? I blink as I try to get used to the darkness.

"Kate, wake up." I recognize the voice.

"Allison?" I whisper. What the hell does she want?

"Come, I need to talk to you," she whispers and walks to the door. I d

Jake has also shifted and he walks to me, his brows furrowed. He turns back to Allison who gets up."What are you doing?" Jake's voice is deep and filled with anger. He gets in a fighting stance and waits for Allison.Allison doesn’t attack. Instead, she straightens her posture, brushing dirt off her clothes as if nothing had happened. “What am I doing? What are you doing?” she snaps. “I’m your Luna, and you will respect me.”"I don't have to answer to you. You're not our Luna yet, so I only take orders from Tyler. Get away from Kate," he warns.I try to push myself up and my body trembles from the effort. Pain lances through my shoulder and neck, sharp and unrelenting. There is nothing left to fuel me. I sink back to the ground. "Tyler will be hearing from this." Allison spits out."What will I be hearin

A warm hand takes mine and gives it a squeeze. I let out a soft groan, trying to squeeze the hand back. "Hey, are you okay? Does your head hurt?” It’s Jake’s voice. That means I am alive. “Yeah,” I whisper, my voice croaking. Ugh. I feel terrible. With a lot of determination, I manage to open my eyes. I am in a different room, one that looks like a bedroom. Where am I? This has to be a room in the pack house or somewhere because I do not recognize it.I turn to the hand that is still holding mine and follow the arm. My gaze lands on Jake who is looking at me with concern. “Hi.” I smile at him and his hand goes to my forehead. He rests his hand on my forehead, his other hand giving my hand a squeeze again. “They gave you a double dose. I was scared you might not wake up,” he says softly, his hand moving to remove a strand of hair from my face. I open my mouth, but my mouth is dry which causes me to burst out into a coughing fit.Jake quickly moves to get a cup of water from the

"May I go home now?" I beg and Jake smiles. He nods with the same smile and stands up, holding his arms out. I hold onto his arms to steady myself as I slowly stand up. Everything aches and I grunt when I find my balance."I hate this feeling," I huff out, starting to walk."What feeling?" I can feel Jake's eyes on me."Being in pain." I laugh at the statement. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I don't know how people do things that inflict pain. I hear Jake walking behind me and he turns me to him."You'll get used to it," he mutters as he picks me up. I want to protest but I am aware I would not have made it through the bedroom door. Jake walks through the door and out of the cabin toward his car. When we reach the car, I open the door so that Jake doesn't have to struggle with that too. He places me on the seat and I notice a bag near my feet."What's that?" I gesture to the bag. Jake closes the door and walks around the car, getting in and closing the door."Your clothes," he says

"I- I don't know . . . Kate," he stammers, his voice barely audible. It looks like he might back away. He closes his eyes with a slow exhale. When he opens them again, his gaze locks with mine."Can I hug you?" he whispers, the question so soft it feels like it's meant to slip away if unanswered. I open my mouth to answer but I snap it close again.I open my mouth, but no words come out. I snap it shut again, suddenly overwhelmed. He wants to hug me? Just before he turns away, I gather all my courage."Yes," I say with a raspy voice. I clear my throat before I answer again. "Yes, I would like that." A wide smile spreads on my face but Jake seems uncertain. I cannot exactly read the emotion in his eyes. He seems mostly confused, but there is a hint of something else as well."Okay," he breathes out and pulls me into a tight embrace. His arms enfold me as my arms wrap around his waist. I let out a small sigh of contentment. It almost feels like the hug is taking away some of my pain. I

He rushes closer and places his hand on my wound. I notice the veins in his hands turning black as the pain in my shoulder decreases. Is he taking away my pain?“Are you okay? Here, let me help,” he says with concern. He gets the shirt off of me and tosses it into the laundry basket in the corner. When Jake looks at me again, I suddenly realize that I’m not wearing a bra. FANTASTIC. I close my eyes, trying my best to ignore the blush creeping onto my face. Jake takes my face in his hands and I open my eyes.“Listen, if you’re uncomfortable, I will leave. But I doubt that you are going to get into the bath successfully without my help. I won’t look, I promise,” he says with his hand on his heart. I laugh and shake my head.“Oh, all right. But if you look, I swear-““I won’t,” he says with a serious expression. I give him a tight smile and he gestures to my pants. I take a deep breath before I lift my butt from the edge of the tub. Jake expertly shimmies the pants down my legs. Typica

The pain in my shoulder serves as a reminder of what happened. The tearing pain causes me to groan. Why did I not die?“No, please.” Jake?I sit on my knees on the bed and search for him between the covers and blankets. My hands touch warmth and I grip his arm.“Jake,” I whisper. The alarm rings through my room and I pull the blanket over my head. My shoulder and neck throb, causing me to let out a silent scream. How am I going to get through this day?I stumble out of my bed and yawn loudly. I hear my mother’s voice downstairs and I smile to myself. I have missed her.I am still surprised that I managed to sleep through the whole Sunday. Somewhere last night, I heard my parents coming in. I am still curious about what my dad, well Kate’s dad, does for a living. The black leather jacket looks appealing, especially with my white jeans and red scarf. Jake would probably not even notice that I am wearing his jacket.I struggle to get my shirt on, but after a few pained groans, I pull my jacket over my shirt. With my trainers in my one hand and my phone in the other, I rush down the stairs. I am probably going to be late.“Ah, there she is. We wanted to come say hello last night, but your light was off. “Shit girl! That sounds intense. I am so glad that I am not you right now. What are you going to do?” Cora asks, wiping the sweat from her forehead with a pink towel. She is out of breath, her blonde locks falling over her face.“That’s why I told you all of this. I need advice,” I say with a hint of frustration. Cora whips her head back and pulls her locks into a high ponytail.“I don’t know. How did you get into this situation? I thought you and Jake were on good terms. You spent the whole weekend with him and now what? You are not going to talk to him? I feel like you are not telling me the whole truth.”I open my mouth but close it again. I only told her about the fair we went to and that Allison and I had a fight. And that Jake spent the night at my house, so the comment of not wanting to face Jake does seem odd.“I- I just don't know what we are at this stage. He might be afraid of commitment,” I say with defeat, taking Cora’s bag that she holds out for me. “Tell him how you fee

The night air is cool against my bare skin when the balcony door creaks open. I don’t even have time to react before I feel Jake’s arms around me, pulling me flush against his warm, hard body. His scent—pine, smoke, something uniquely him—wraps around me as he buries his face in my neck. He presses a slow, lingering kiss just beneath my ear.I let out a soft laugh, feeling the very evident state of his arousal against me. “You’re absolutely insatiable, you know that?”Jake hums into the kiss. He kisses me deeply and his tongue slides against mine in a way way that makes my toes curl. His hands skim my sides, warm palms pressing into my bare skin as he pulls me closer. My mind flickers to Blaire, but I don’t want to ruin this moment. I hesitate for just a second too long.“What’s wrong?” Jake pulls back, his dark eyes studying me. I swallow, then sigh. “Blaire stopped by the house.”Something changes in him. His body tenses, his fingers tighten on my waist and his pupils dilate. In a

By the time practice is over, my legs ache something fierce, and my arms feel like they might fall clean off. I just know I’ll be paying for this tomorrow. But it’s worth it. And, of course, the sheer joy of wiping that smug "You’ll never get that ball" look right off Cora’s face when I absolutely do.I sling my towel around my neck as we walk off the court, still catching my breath. Cora nudges me with her shoulder as she shakes her head.“You’re getting cocky,” she says, though she’s grinning.I let out a breathy laugh, rolling my shoulders. “Nah, I’m just getting better,” I say, shooting her a cheeky wink.Cora huffs, but she’s amused. “You’re insufferable.” She shoves me lightly, and I stumble in mock offense.“Oi!” I exclaim, holding a hand to my chest. “Violence. Unbelievable.”She snorts as we step into the hallway, the distant sounds of practice still carrying from the gym. It’s mostly empty now, save for a few

I wake up and immediately know I’m in trouble. The light streaming through the curtains is too bright, too unforgiving. When I groggily reach for my phone, my stomach drops.“Oh, shit,” I groan, bolting upright.Jake, the smug bastard, is still lying in bed, arms folded behind his head, watching me like I’m the most entertaining thing he’s ever seen.“Something wrong?” he drawls, his voice deep and lazy.“I’m late, you absolute tosser!” I scramble to untangle myself from the sheets, nearly face-planting off the bed in the process.Jake just smirks. “You weren’t complaining about time earlier.”I throw a pillow at him. He catches it midair, still looking far too pleased with himself.I don’t have time to argue. I’m already halfway to the bathroom, muttering a string of expletives under my breath. The shower is the quickest I’ve ever taken. It’s just enough to rinse off before I hop out, towel barely secured around me as I rush to throw on the first outfit I gather. My shirt is wrinkled

A second later, the bathroom door opens, steam curling around the edges and Jake steps out.My breath catches. His damp hair falls messily over his forehead and droplets of water trail down his bare chest. A towel hangs low on his hips. Very low. When he sees me awake, a soft smile spreads across his face."Morning," he murmurs. Before I can respond, he crosses the room in two strides and climbs back into bed. He pulls me into his arms like he never wants to let me go. His skin is warm and fresh from the shower. He smells incredible."You okay?" he asks, his lips ghosting over my temple.I nod, relaxing against him. "I thought you left."His arms tighten around me, his voice turning serious.

I walk through the crowded hallways, my bag slung over one shoulder. I am still floating from this morning. My skin is buzzing with warmth, a lingering trace of Jake’s arms around me. It’s ridiculous how much I missed him, how much lighter everything feels now that things are okay again. I find myself replaying the moment in my head over and over. I don’t think I’ve ever woken up feeling so content.Cora practically materializes at my side, looping her arm through mine in one fluid motion.“So,” she says, her lips stretching into a knowing grin. “I need to find a dress for prom.”I let out a short laugh, shaking my head. “And this is my problem because…?”She stops dead in her tracks, gasping dramatically like I’ve just insulted her entire family lineage.
