Even after a few days, Miranda already found herself in a new routine. She would go to work, complete her morning daily tasks. Eat with Sharon and a few of the other people in the office. Complete her afternoon tasks, and then go home.
Today was a bit different though. Today was going to be the first ‘tutoring’ session. Sharon normally got the bus to and from work, so she got in Miranda’s car to give her directions. They both waved to Kevin as they exited the car park.
“Kevin is such a nice man, shame he doesn’t work in the actual building!” Sharon commented.
Miranda laughed. “I agree, you were the second nice person I met on my first day. Kevin was the first.”
“Didn’t like our receptionist then?” Sharon chuckled.
Miranda shot a sideways glance. “Pfft! She is one of the rudest people I have ever met!”
“Yeah, she’s a cow to everyone. Bitches about everyone too, especially about what they wear.”
“I noticed she’s worn some very fancy clothes. All branded.”
Sharon nodded. “Yeah. Don’t think that comes from her wage. There are rumours she’s fucking the CEO. So maybe he buys them for her.”
Miranda had a guilty love for office gossip.
“What’s the CEO like?”
“Old. Fat. And balding.”
They both started laughing, Miranda was glad she had said yes to this.
Sharon turned to Miranda. “What about you? I know you live alone but are you dating?”
Miranda rolled her eyes. “Trying to. I’m on dating apps, but they are mostly idiots who think I will enjoy a photo of their genitals.”
“Ah yes. The perils of modern dating. I don’t think I’ll bother, at least not for a long time.”
“Are you and Josh’s dad not together anymore?”
Sharon went quiet, and Miranda hoped she hadn’t offended her new friend. “He died three years ago. Cancer. We knew it was coming, but it was still hard.”
Miranda’s heart panged. “Oh, Sharon. I am so sorry.”
“Oh, it’s alright love. We had 25 years of happiness. That’s a lot more than some people get.” Miranda gave her a small smile.
It wasn’t long after when Sharon pointed out a house on the left. “Here we are, number 34. Just park in front of the drive.”
As they went inside, Miranda couldn’t help but be impressed by Sharon’s home. She clearly had impeccable taste when it came to decorating. The hallway was a combination of soft hues of blue, and there were fresh flowers in an ornate vase that sat on a charming side table.
“Just through here, Josh will be down in a sec. I’ll get us some coffee” She pointed to a doorway that led to the living room. It was just as lovely as the hallway, with a huge L-shaped sofa that was adorned with plush cushions.
Just as she was about to sit, she heard footsteps coming down the stairs, she turned to the doorway. Oh fuck. Her eyes widened as she took in the boy, no. Man. That stood before her. He was over six foot. His tight black t-shirt allowed her to see just how toned his arms and chest were. He had dirty blonde hair that was pushed back from his face. Sparkling blue eyes were staring back at her. He was 100% fuckable.
Suddenly, he broke the silence. “Hey, I’m Josh.”
Miranda was melting at his voice. Fucking hell she couldn’t wait to hear him say her name. Trying to regain some of her composure, she hurriedly replied. “I’m Miranda.”
He smiled at her a little awkwardly. God, why did he have to be so attractive?
Sharon appeared behind Josh. “Ah, I see you’ve met! I’ve bought some coffee.”
Miranda needed to pull herself together, and she was starting to feel very self-conscious about the way she looked.
“Sharon, do you mind if I use your loo?”
“No problem love, it’s upstairs. First door on your right.”
Miranda reached the bathroom. She closed the door and pressed her back against it, attempting to regulate her breathing.
She could not under any circumstances fancy her new friend’s son. She was also probably at least nine years older than him. This was completely inappropriate.
She went over to the mirror and checked her reflection. Fuck. Her makeup had not lasted well. She could have screamed with joy that she’d bought her bag up with her so she could touch it up. She hurriedly rubbed under her eyes where the mascara had smudged and covered up the area with concealer. A little blush and concealer went on next.
She looked at what she was wearing. Why on earth had she decided to wear the frumpiest dress in her wardrobe today. She had to remind herself this was not a date, and she needed to stop acting like it was one. Giving herself a shake, she walked out the door.
She almost jumped out of her skin when she saw Josh leaning against the bannister with two cups in his hand.
“Mum’s going to start cooking. She suggested we get on with it.”
Get on with what? I know what I’d like to get on with. Miranda thought. “Sure” Miranda tried to smile as normally as possible.
“If it’s alright, all my stuff is laid out in my room. Mum’s a bit funny about mess.”
Miranda nodded, not trusting herself to speak without it coming out high pitched.
Josh’s room was similar to a lot of teenage boy’s bedrooms. Dark colours and a tower of beer cans in the window. There was a couple of film posters on his wall, but it was the music posters that interested Miranda. She hadn’t expected him to like rock music. He caught her looking.
“Mum tells me it’s all noise.”
Without thinking, she replied, “well you have good taste in noise then.”
He smiled at her curiously and she took a moment to enjoy his gaze.
“So…er…tell me what your topic is at the moment.”
They sat down at the desk. Miranda attempted to not be affected by their close proximity. He even smelt good.
“The Tudors at the moment. We finished War of the Roses and Henry 7th. We’re on Henry 8th currently, and the breakdown of his first marriage.”
Of course. It had to be about one of the most sex-filled parts of British History. Pushing that out of her brain Miranda asked, “So are they asking you to write about why his marriage broke down with Catherine of Aragon?”
“Yeah pretty much.”
“Okay so, what do you think?”
“Well, Catherine hadn’t given him a male heir.”
“Yes, that is the main part to it, but what about Anne Boleyn? Why wasn’t she just another mistress?”
“She refused to shag him unless they got married?” A wry smile appeared on his lips. Just hearing him say the word shag had made Miranda feel hot.
She stifled a laugh. “Try and put it a bit more eloquently than that, but yeah. She wouldn’t let him touch her until she was sure they were going to be married.”
They talked through more of the reasons, and Josh began to make some notes. Miranda particularly enjoyed these moments because she could stare at him without him seeing. A stray hair fell in his face, and Miranda had to bite her lip to stop herself from reaching out and tucking it behind his ear.
All too soon, Sharon was calling from the bottom of the stairs to tell them that dinner was ready. Miranda reluctantly got out of her seat. She would have rather stayed in Josh’s bedroom all night.
Sharon had already laid out the plates. A huge dish filled with shepherd’s pie was sitting in the middle of the table. There were also steamed green beans and carrots. Miranda was actually really looking forward to eating some vegetables. She lived off mostly junk.
“Help yourselves.”
Miranda wasn’t sure if she was actually hungry, she was still feeling overwhelmed in Josh’s company.
Not wanting to be rude, she spooned on a helping and began to eat. Despite her lack of appetite, Miranda had to admit that Sharon was a good cook.
“So, how did you two get on up there?”
“Good. Miranda’s a great teacher.”
Fucking hell he’d finally said her name. It sounded amazing. She reckoned it would sound even better if he whispered it in her ear. She realised that while getting caught up in her fantasy, she’d not actually replied.
“Er well, to be honest, I think Josh knows more than he thinks he does. All his ideas are right.”
Sharon grinned. “Sounds like it was a success then.”
Not really knowing what else to say, Miranda smiled and continued eating. She sensed that Josh was watching her from across the table, but she didn't dare look. She was probably only imagining it anyway.
After they had finished, Miranda got up to leave.
“The food was great Sharon, really. Best meal I’ve had in a while.”
“Least I could do.”
Josh stepped forward and looked into Miranda’s eyes. “Thanks for your help.” He shot her an easy smile.
Miranda buckled a little. How did he manage to disarm her so easily? “No problem at all.”
When she got back in her car, she took a moment to rest her forehead against the steering wheel. This was a problem. A big problem. She without a doubt wanted to fuck Josh’s brains out.
Josh was walking towards Miranda. He was so close she could hear his heat beating. She reached out and ran her hand down his chest, and then lower. Until she reached the top of his jeans. His breath hitched, and he pushed her against the wall. He pressed his body up against hers, and she could feel how hard he was. She instinctively began grinding against him. He slipped his hand up her top and was inches away from rubbing her nipple…Miranda woke with a start, the alarm ringing through her ear. Fuck. She was angry for two reasons, firstly that the dream had ended. And secondly because she couldn’t get this guy out of her head.Spending time with Josh had literally made her feel drunk. And now she was starting to sober up. Under no circumstances could she pursue this. She laughed at herself. She was acting as if he would be interested too. She had no doubt he had an endless stream of gorgeous y
The weekend had passed by in a haze off wine and food. When Monday morning came, Miranda was not ready for it. She sighed heavily as she got out of bed to get ready for work.As she arrived outside the car park, Kevin signalled for her to stop just before the barrier. She pulled up and lowered her passenger side window.“Morning Kevin, you okay?”“Yes, sorry Miranda, just letting everyone know this morning that you can’t go in through the main door. Mechanism has broken over the weekend. There are signs to the side door though.”“Oh okay, no worries. Thanks for letting me know.”He paused. “You okay Miranda? You don’t seem your usual chirpy self?”“Oh, I’m fine.” She lied.
It was Saturday morning. Miranda had slept in to prepare for going out tonight with Sharon. God she needed it. After last weekend and her disastrous date, a night out was just what she needed.Thursday had also been awkward as hell. Josh hadn’t mentioned one word of seeing her the previous night, and had seemed much more distant than he normally was. She didn’t really understand it. She found it impossible to believe he’d been bothered about her being on a date. They’d talked through Josh’s essay and that had been it. He’d barely looked her in the eye.It was almost lunch time now, and Sharon had proposed they start early in the afternoon. This was fine with Miranda, the closer she was to getting pissed the better. She decided to eat a sandwich and a cereal bar to line her stomach. After that she went upstairs and had a shower. Whe
She woke up on Sunday morning with a headache and a sickening sense of guilt. She stayed in bed for a while, not wanting to open her eyes and face reality. The trouble was, although she felt guilty, she couldn’t get the memory of his kiss out of her head. Every time she thought about it, her body tingled. She writhed in the bed, in need of him. Her heart skipped at the thought that he’d made the first move. He’d wanted her too. She never would have expected him to feel that way about her.Her phone buzzed, bringing her out of her thoughts. It was Sharon. The guilt washed over her again.-OMG I’m so sorry about last night! Josh told me what a state I was!! If it’s any consolation I feel bloody awfulMiranda winced at the apology. It should be her apologising to Sharon for grinding against her son in her kitchen while she was passed out.
It was Saturday again. Miranda didn’t really know what to do with herself. As she was still meant to be ill, she wasn’t going to go out. She’d been texting Josh since he’d left on Thursday. She had to admit, the more she got to know him, the more she liked him. He had an amazing sense of humour, and appeared to be much more mature than other guys of his age. She reflected that this was probably to do with his dads’ death. She liked how he was just the right mix of cheeky and kind. She thought more and more about what he’d said on Thursday. He wanted her to be the first person he slept with. The idea of that both excited her and filled her with anxiety. On one hand, being his first would be a thrill in itself. Knowing she was the first woman he would touch in that way filled her with happiness. On the other hand, she’d never slept with a virgin before. Most guys had already known what they were doing, she didn’t hav
She climbed on top of him. Putting her arms behind her back to take her bra off.She was now completely naked, straddling him. His jeans had to go. She moved down. That bulge was there again. She was so excited to touch him this time. She unbuckled his belt, and helped him to remove his jeans. Now a little freer, she could see his large member, outlined by the thin material of his boxers. She decided she was going to have a little fun teasing him.She ever so gently moved her hand to rest over him. He felt big and solid. His cock immediately twitched, even at the light pressure she was applying. Miranda pulled her hair over her shoulder, and began kissing at the top of his deep V.She noticed his breathing had got heavier.Realising she didn’t want to wait any longer, she pulled down his boxers and let him free. She bit her lip. His cock was thic
The next day, the lack of sleep actually helped convince people that Miranda had been ill.“Oh, you poor thing. Looks like it was a rough few day.” Sharon’s face was laced with genuine concern.“Yeah but I’m feeling loads better. Thanks for the lasagne by the way. It was delicious. Just what I needed.”“You’re very welcome. I hope you didn’t mind Josh dropping it off. He was very insistent. You’ve made a big impression I think.”Miranda wasn’t sure how to respond. “Err…no it was fine! Gave me a chance to ask him how he was getting on with his essay.”“You are sweet!”Someone cleared their throat behind Miranda. She turned to find Daniel standing there.
Miranda had attempted to think of every excuse possible to not go on Thursday. She’d already used being ill, but maybe she could tell another lie. Like she had a date? But then she would have to make up a whole story about some pretend mystery man. She couldn’t even use the pretend family engagement again with a sister she wasn’t even close to. Josh would know for sure she was lying. Maybe she could say there had been a gas leak at her house…Miranda shook her head. She was going to have to just go.Even if she managed to think of the perfect excuse, she couldn’t give one every Thursday. There was also every chance Josh would just show up at her house and he’d charm her into bed. Again. At least if they were at Sharon’s house, he wouldn’t be able to touch her. Probably.Ever since the Facebook stal
Miranda felt as if she was in a beautiful dream. She couldn’t conceive how things had turned around so quickly. Just a few days ago she had felt so entirely lost, so completely consumed by despair that happiness had become a distant memory. Now, he was awake. He was getting better. His mum had accepted them. Miranda could not have wished for more. When Josh had woken up, he had been overjoyed to find that his mother and girlfriend were reunited. After all, they were the people he loved the most in the world. They were his family. Once he had regained some strength, Sharon had bought a pack of cards into the hospital, and they had all played cards together. Now Sharon understood their relationship, Miranda felt like she had her old friend back, except this time it was stronger. They bonded over their love for Josh, both knowing that
Miranda hurried as quickly as she could to the café, scared that if she took too long Sharon would change her mind. She had no idea what Sharon was going to say. There was every chance she would simply berate her further. Maybe she would warn her not to come back and to leave them alone. But Miranda knew she had to try. There could be a chance, however small, Sharon would at least tell her how Josh was.Following the signs on the beams that jutted out from the ceiling, she soon came upon the meeting place. Due to the time of day, it was busy, and she frantically searched over the many tables for Sharon. The smell of food that had been boiling or simmering all day reached her nose. It was not a pleasant one, and it did nothing but increase the feeling of sickness in her stomach. Then a figure got to their feet, her attention caught. It was her. She was at a table right at the back of the dining area.
“I cannot believe you have the audacity to show your face in here,” Sharon spat. She was trembling with rage.Miranda buckled under her gaze filled with pure hatred.Linda began to speak. “Perhaps I should wheel you back now Miranda?”She nodded. She couldn’t bear to be persecuted by Sharon right now. She felt too fragile.“Oh no. Now you’re here I want you to listen to what I have to say.”Miranda asked Linda to wait, and the nurse reluctantly obliged.“Are you aware of the catalogue of injuries my son is currently suffering from?”
Miranda tried to open her eyes. She was vaguely aware of a pain in her head. It also didn’t feel like her body was in the right place. But she couldn’t work that out right now. Where was she? Finally opening her eyes, she tried to bring them to focus. All she could make out was scraps of metal and glass. Then it started to come back to her. The lorry. Josh driving. The lorry swerving into Josh’s side…Frantically looking over to her right, she caught sight of him. Her heart broke as she took in the image before her. There were cuts all over his face, likely from the smashed windscreen and driver side window. His right arm was at an odd angle, and she thought that it must be broken. His eyes were shut, and his lips were parted ever so slightly. She tried to call out to him, but it came out as more of a croak. “Josh? Josh wake up! Josh!”&
The next morning, she knew if she didn’t insist on going out, Josh would be quite happy spending the entire day in bed having sex. It wasn’t that Miranda didn’t like the idea, but she fancied getting out into the sunshine. Now she had this new attitude of not caring what people thought, she wanted to go out with Josh. Tell the world, ‘he’s mine’.Now it was March, the first signs of spring were appearing. Roger had told Miranda of a bluebell wood a few miles out of the city, and she suggested her and Josh spend their Saturday morning there. Miranda loved nature, and there was nothing like spring flowers after a cold winter. As she picked up her car keys, she held them out to him. “Do you want to drive?”He hesitated a little, but
The next few days for Miranda passed by in a much happier haze. They went to the university together, and came home together. Miranda even let Josh drive a few times so he could start getting used to the traffic. It was a strange feeling, letting him be in control of something so important as her car, but she also kind of liked it too. There was something sexy about the look of concentration on his face, and his strong hand changing gears. He was going to start proper lessons next week, and when he passed, she would definitely be letting him take the controls more often.Miranda was also finding great pleasure in her work. All it took was to get her head into not giving a crap about what other people thought. After that, she could focus fully on what her role was going to be about. It was Friday lunch time, and her and Roger were taking advantage of a particularly sunny spring da
The next morning, Miranda was under no illusion that she was alone. The first thing she did was check her phone. But there was no message. She made herself go through the motions of the day, trying to block out any thoughts or feelings. It was easier that way.Dr Bainbridge took her into the archaeological room in the afternoon and despite her depression, she did enjoy looking at some of the recent Roman artifacts from the last dig. He left her to study a copper coin with the face of Emperor Nero embossed onto it. Under the microscope she could see all the intricate details of his profile. Miranda became aware of someone standing beside her. A short man in his early 40’s with thick rimmed spectacles had appeared to the left of her. He gave her a large grin and introduced himself.“Hi, Miranda isn’t it? I’m Roger.” M
Josh waited in the library until Miranda finished work so they could go back together. She partly wished he hadn’t, she wanted to be alone. His easy smile came into view as he walked towards her car. He got in and went to kiss her, but she moved her face a little so he got her cheek. He ignored this, and instead asked her eagerly about her first day.
The whole shop was silent. Natasha was holding her Champagne mid sip staring wide-eyed at Miranda. Her mum looked horrified, and Chloe…well. Miranda didn’t have to wait long to find out how she was feeling.“YOU FUCKING BITCH!” Within a fraction of a second, Chloe was launching herself at Miranda. Clear intent to use her stiletto shaped acrylics to gouge out her older sisters’ eyes. Miranda was unusually quick however, and dodged her sister's attack, the dress she was holding crashing to the ground. The sound of her mum’s voi
