/Lana's POV/

All my life, from the moment I was born, my fate had been decided.

The people who took care of me, my uncle and his family had made it apparent that I am to wed a rich Alpha. Having lost my parents at a very young age, I was an only child with an eternal inheritance. Still an orphan, though. So my father's brother, next in line for the Pack Alpha, adopted me as his daughter.

My eighteen years of life consisted of being prepared to be the perfect omega, the perfect woman to bear a child with countless classes and training. For most omegas, it would be a dream, being born into royalty and living in a Palace, but my life was a nightmare.

I was asked to stay in my room on the east side of the Palace, all by myself. Beth and the tutors were the only people I had entire conversations with.

A knock on the door startled me out of my thoughts, head turning over my shoulder to see an omega rushing in. Her head was bent down, as usual, hands clasped together. I let out a sigh, slowly turning on my feet to stare at the familiar maid.

"What is it, Meena?"

"Your Highness, you are invited for breakfast downstairs in the main hall."

My ears perked at that, eyes widening as I let those words sink in. Why would they want to have a meal with me? My aunt only sent invitations if there was an important event coming up and I was needed to show off in front of others.

"Oh!" The word slipped out of my mouth as soon as I saw the calendar, the book in my hand dully hitting the carpeted floor. "It's 24th today! How did I forget?"

Every year on the 25th of July, my family hosts a ball featuring all the coming of age omegas, betas and Alpha females to find their mates. I have been a silent spectator of that event for years now, desperately waiting for my chance.

Finally, my prayers have been heard. I will be one of the omegas in the ball tomorrow, finding my Prince Charming. I could feel my cheeks reddening at that, lips twitching in a barely controllable smile.

"Lead the way, Meena," I said with a lilt in my voice, feet tapping against the floor in excitement.

The Palace was filled with mumbled conversations, voices becoming more evident as I descended the grand staircase. My heels lightly clicked against the floor, drawing attention as I passed by members of the staff, their brows furrowed. I rarely had the opportunity to step into the main hall, so their surprise was expected.

On my way to the dining hall, I passed by a portrait of my family in the hallway, heart twisting painfully. Its been almost a decade since I lost both of my parents. The pain of that day was still burned in my memory, remembering those words from Beth. My breath caught in my lungs, too scared to escape as I kept on praying it to be just a dream. Those words slipping out of the housekeeper's mouth felt like a death sentence.

With an inaudible sigh, I tore my eyes away from the picture and strode towards the dining room.

The atmosphere in the room shifted at my arrival, the whole table stilling. My aunt's smile widened as she spotted me; her long auburn hair was pinned back, a few strands falling on each side. She had a glint in her eyes that made me nervously shift on my feet, a lump forming in my throat. Besides her, Cathy, her seventeen-year-old omega daughter, sat, poised and elegant.

Lucas, my older cousin, was also at the table, not even bothering to spare me a glance. The last time we were in the same room was when he broke my left arm in anger. All because I had failed to do his assignment for the pottery class. It's been almost half a year since that fateful incident.

My uncle, the Pack Alpha, motioned me towards an empty chair in front of him. I sank, my legs pressing together while the maids hurried to serve my food.

"Good morning, my dear." My aunt, Claire, grinned, wiping the corners of her mouth with the napkin before setting it down.

"Hello, Aunty." At her raised brow, I quickly coughed, correcting myself, toes curling in annoyance. "Luna Claire, I apologise."

She made sure that I addressed her as Aunty while we were in the company of other royals or guests. A show for them to believe us as a happy family.

"Hope you slept well. We are expecting guests from all over the country today."

"Yes, I did, Alpha." I robotically answered, knuckles whitening around the fork as I bent my head. He did not allow me to meet his eyes during our talk, wishing I respected him that way.

"Of course you did." My cousin snickered, her brown eyes boring into me as her mouth twisted into evident disdain. Cathy unceremoniously stabbed her fork into the salad on her plate. At only seventeen, the omega had severe issues with food and obsessed over maintaining her figure, traits she inherited from her mother. "What do you even do besides cope in your room and read, nerd?"

Not like I have much of a choice. I wanted to reply, the retort on the tip of my tongue, but instead, I looked away.

"Stop." My aunt grimaced, mouth twisting as the maid served me a portion of chicken breast. "Take that away. She needs to fit in her dress. Give her a salad like Cathy."

My stomach growled in protest. This was going too far. I had to skip dinner the night before for the very same reason. "Luna, I can manage...."

"Do not talk back to my mother, you loser!" I felt a sharp nudge from my side on my calf, wincing as Lucas glared at me.

"Lucas! Take it easy." Claire said with a pointed look, not even slightly concerned about me. Not that I expected her to be. "She needs to look perfect for the debutant tomorrow."

He huffed, tossing leftover salad on my hair. "Right! One day more, and I won't have to see your ugly face anymore."

Swallowing the tears, I brushed the lettuce off my hair and, through blurry vision, finished my meal.

***

I stood in front of a vanity table, the floor cold underneath my feet. With a bit of effort, I managed to untangle the knots formed in my messy brown hair, sweeping them back. Staring at the mirror, I winced while noticing the tired lines underneath my eyes, cheeks still pink from cold. My eyes fixated on a bit of pulp, clumping my hair together.

Lucas. I cursed under my breath. There was no use in brushing anyway; I thought while standing up. In the end, I decided to take a shower, wash off all the dirt and sticky pulp from my hair.

Beth was waiting for me. A wide smile stretched across my lips as soon as I saw the housekeeper tidying my bed. Rushing to her, I tapped on her shoulder, almost startling the older woman.

"Moons! Why are you not ready yet?"

The housekeeper was the only one who didn't change after my parent's death. She treated me like her own, ensuring that I ate on time, did my lessons and talked with me. If not for her active presence, I would have succumbed to drop and retreated into a shell of a person.

I looked down at my blue sundress, brows furrowed. "I just showered. Besides, this is a decent outfit for staying in my room."

"No, Lana. You have to greet guests in a few minutes. Hurry up!"

"Why did no one tell me about it?"

With her hands on her hips, she turned to me. "I am telling you now."

"That's not what I mean..."

"We don't have time to argue my dear. Just get ready."

"Ugh...fine."

Hurriedly, I rushed and pulled out my most delicate gown, a lovely yellow dress with long sleeves, pastel threading, and lacy trim. My late mother's pearls were cool against the skin of my exposed collarbone. Her jewellery, especially the pearls, were the only thing I had by to remember.

My aunt took all her gowns and shoes as a punishment and burned them before my eyes—her way of teaching me a lesson.

"Look at you all grown up," I heard Beth, breaking out of my thoughts as I realised the housekeeper tugging on my wrist. She made me stand in front of the full-length mirror, her eyes shining with a sheen of tears. "I am going to miss you, pup."

Emotion welled in my chest, head lifting to meet her eyes through the mirror. "I wish I could take you along with me, Beth. Away from these people."

Beth wetly chuckled, tapping gently on my shoulder as she adjusted the sleeves. "It's not that bad here."

The thuds of the horses' hooves against the grounds interrupted my response. My heart raced with a shiver of tension, my mind filling with thoughts of uncertainty. I turned to Beth, watching as she reassured me with a soft pat against the fabric of my gown, "The guests are here. Let's go."

I exhaled, rubbing my hands over my face, knees pulled together. I couldn't help but recall Axel's words from the night before. The Alpha was reluctant to accept me as his mate and looked prepared to reject me on the spot. "He doesn't want me, Beth. That's the reason he pulled me away from the crowd and in the gardens."Frustration bubbled in my stomach, fingers clutching at the ends of the duvet and picking at loose threads. "Why would the

What could he possibly want to say that he hadn't already? I bitterly thought under my breath. "We will be in the Palace gardens."My uncle whooshed out a breath, raising the cup of tea to his mouth and nodding delightedly. Of course. My head hurt, and so did my throat, like there were iron bands around, squeezing until it was close to breaking and poking. I had no intention of prolonging the pain, staring at the person in front of me. So quickly, I stepped towards the double french doors leading towards the alley and threw them open. On my way, I could feel the prickle of his stare on my back, but I ignored it. As soon as the gust of fresh air greeted me, I sucked in a deep breath. It nipped at my overheated skin in a gentle caress as if it knew of the pain I was going through. My vision blurred again with tears as I gathered the courage to pull myself together and get away from Axel. I could feel nothing except a terrible hollowness, the emptiness inside left by Axel. As if it’s a void, sucking in everything that made me who I am. For a second, I thought I could quickly fill in the gap by finding someone else, having someone else. I could go to another Alpha and let him press tender kisses to all the worst parts

/Axels POV/“Axel! Axel!”“Hmm?”“Are you even listening to me?”“Yes…I apologise for….”The omega shook her head with a choked-off scoff, a half-aborted toss that made a long strand of hair fall in her face, curling over her wild, doe-shaped eyes. Eyes shone in the dim study room with more than just the soft glow of the candles. Her jaw flexed, knuckles turning whiter with how hard she clenched her fingers.I swallowed the lump forming in my throat and lifted my chin, meeting her gaze and holding it. For a moment that seemed to last forever, we stood there, surrounded by the heavy silence that Lana had created with her words. Why would she say that?I assure you this Lana would kill herself before harming you.No. I curled my toes, trying not to let the perfect composure slip. It’s the gratitude, I thought internally while looking at the omega in front of me. After all, I agreed to mate her and get her out of that Palace. “You don’t believe me?” She sounded wounded, a hurt noise sli

“What do you mean by problems?” Ethan beat me to it, curiosity written all over his face, leaning forward. “It doesn’t end well?” I winced as those words slipped out of my mouth, biting my tongue. “Well…yes. It’s a tragedy buried so deeply that rarely anyone alive knows about it.” The hardcover burned in my hands the longer I stared, tears blurring my vision. From the corner of my eyes, I saw Ethan, hawk-eyed, lips pursed in a single line and brows furrowed. The Alpha had difficulty taking all this, just like me, but he handled it better. At least for now. I thought shakily, averting my stare toward Daniel. He leaned against the stone wall and bought his knees to his chest; chin propped down. “The book…you can take it with you and read when you get back.”On instinct, I tightened the grip on the cover, nails digging around the bounds. “T-Thank you.”“It was the only existing copy after the great war fifty years ago. Or perhaps the omega had no interest in taking a walk with me.The last part stung. It didn’t matter if that was the result I wanted from her side; it still hurt. Rubbing my face, I decided to relax in the bathtub with scalding water, a mountain of bubbles piled onto my chest. To soothe the turmoil, I also added some scents but nothing compared to her natural scent. Sweat beaded down the side of my face, and fingers were pruned as I tilted my head back, shifting my legs. The water swirled around. I hadn't realised that I was bone-tired, almost in a zone between falling asleep and becoming awake, in the incoherent moment when one was too tired to close one's eyes. T

My heart didn't stop pounding the entire time I walked away from Axel, hands sweaty and throat wilted with guilt. It was for the best; I kept telling myself. Just one little lie so I could sneak out with Alpha Ethan to see his friend. As the commander asked, I stood patiently by the fire, wearing boots tied on tightly and my cape clipped. My arms came to wrap around the torso as a gust of cold wind blew by. I squinted my eyes while noticing a dark figure approaching me, body stiffening. When I got hold of his scent, my body automatically relaxed, staring at the Alpha. He was dressed in a black sweater over top of his white button-up, a thick black cape pulled on with the hood over his head as he approached me. Ethan was also carrying a satchel thrown over his chest; his shoes switched to thick black boots. "Should we leave?" "Yes." The Alpha guided us to the room on the other side of the wing, the table in a far corner standing out. I watched as he pushed away, pulling the car

/Axel's POV/My beating heart fell to my stomach like a dead rose petal, watching the omega speak with Ethan, eyes crinkling and mouth curving at something he had said. I could feel my stomach boil, an irrational surge of feelings taking over, and the utter negligence from inside had my feet moving towards them before my mind comprehended it. This was not the same Lana I chose to mate; overflowing with sweet, earnest innocence made her intentions towards me clear as the night. She was yielding in all ways, except in her stubborn decision. This was not the same one who had laughed at my silly attempt of humour, who stared at me as if I hung the moon and stars for her.I was lucky if she spared me a glance in my direction now. How did it come to this? I fought down a strangled, choking sound, whirling around, marching purposefully through the nearest open door in a drastic attempt to get away. My mouth gaped at his crude statement, and I recoiled on the spot. Rage filled my insides, my back stiffening as I narrowed my eyes into slits. I took a deep breath, resisting the urge to scream at him.How dare he accuse me of such a thing? Especially since he was the one to set the boundaries from the beginning. Axel reminded me time and time again that I meant nothing to him. “Why do you care?!” The words slipped out before I could stop myself, biting my tongue. A chuckle burst out of him, hollow and empty. “Why do you I care? You are still my omega, for moon's sake!”My toes curled at that, and I didn’t know what to think of the strange stirring in the bottom of my belly, and the permanent lingering of his scent did little to help me.“Oh, am I? Cause last time we slept together, you made sure to remind me I meant nothing.”He flinched as if he had been slapped by my words, teeth grinding. The Alpha's harsh breath fell on my face as he merely leaned closer, the vein in his foreh

  • His Second Chance Luna    Part 60

It's been a few days since the last time I saw Axel, so I had a lot of time to think with a clear mind. There was no point in denying that his absence affected me; the marks left on my skin wholly faded. It gave my omega enough nightmares, waking up to look for his arms only to find myself all alone in the bed. I didn't know when things switched from vehemently hating being anywhere near him to wanting to get as close as I possibly could without being too obvious. But his words stung. The wound was still raw, and I had no intention of making the same mistake again. For all I know, the Alpha rejected me without actually saying those words. Despite his long stares in my direction and wanting to talk, I had completely shut down the attempts. I had no interest in hearing the exact words again. Pinning after a mate who doesn't even care about relationships is the possibly highest act of stupidity. Shaking my head, I stood up, noticing the cape Amy had placed on the bed for me. Ethan was

It’s been a lot; ever since I woke up to Lana sleeping next to me, looking very angelic and sculpted by the moon goddess, guilt swarmed my belly. During my rut, all I saw was how she would look up, lush, her long curls a mess and matted on her forehead and tear tracks streaming down her reddened cheeks as she whispered back softly, urgent and unsteady to knot her. I felt my breath catch sharply at the memory, the jolt pulling me straight back to the present. Still, despite everything, I coerced her into sleeping with me, a sick feeling taking over my body. If not for my rut and the Alpha taking over, I would have never let her near me. Why did she give in? Maybe…No! I completely shut the thought before it started forming, fully aware of its danger.
